  • Finally complete! This 3600-frame long fly around of the Magister has been my white whale for a while now - I have run into so many rendering issues and so many VRay/RTX bugs in trying to get it finished. I'm delighted to share it with you, and I hope you enjoy it!

@@alephkasai9384I think it gave us a renewed appreciation for the canon Ep.V appearance because by delivering a more sleek profile it actually emphasizes the modularity we know the design is capable of. That means in essence that there is no assurance that any two configurations have the same outer hull.

These are the quad barrel laser turrets that the Immobilizer 418 class cruiser, called "Interdictor", always had per canon... just visible for the first time. ^^
They never had a problem with fighter attacks, even being able to force proton torpedos and concussion missiles to lose target and turn around with their gravity well generators. Actually, you really wouldn't want to get too close to one of these in a fighter or bomber.
What the Interdictor lacked, was armor, hull strength and shield strenght... any cruiser with some turbolasers, or heck, even a Nebulon B frigate would be able to overpower it. And there's nothing it can really do to retaliate because of the standard lasers lack of range and firepower against ships larger than a corvette.

I love this! I noticed the reactor bulge at the back end, in between the main engines. Also the secondary engines that weren't lit, I think? Love the giant turbolaser batteries and the noticeable ion cannon bulbs.
However, I feel like this ship has lots of vulnerabilities, namely the large open space that is the main hangar, and how a lucky shot seems like it would go straight through to the reactor. I'm assuming there would be blast shields that would come down when needed? Of course, I know a carrier like this wouldn't be on the front lines and would be well protected, but still looks dangerous. And while I know it's huge, the triangle shape makes me think of the thin spire on Rebels' Nebulon B's, and how that's a weak spot. This ship is a whole lot more massive, so I don't think it would be a problem, but it made me think.
Not trying to knock your design, I think it fits in well with the Imperial aesthetic and fits in-universe, but I see some of the same in-universe vulnerabilities as I see on other ships. Is there something I'm missing that would (hopefully) make me wrong?

I like the vulnerabilities; every ship has them. If they don't, there's probably some fault in ventilation and cooling that's going to come back to bite it later, or you're not going to be able to transfer personnel to and from it (*coughcough Allegiance-class design cough*).
The "vulnerabilities" are covered by the gun batteries all along its surface, the escort ships around it, and (as you noted) the Admiral's discretion not to use this ship as a brawler. It's excellent for sieging planets, backing up fleets, and coordinating every ship in the sector...but it's not going to want to face two dozen Y-wing bombers or three Mon Cal cruisers at close range. Even then, the Rebellion would REALLY have to break through a lot of fighter lines to even think about taking shots at those hangar bays...and even a titan like this is going to be able to swing about and maneuver.

If Thrawn designed a Star Destroyer.
"Tell me, commander. What is the purpose of all this central space on a star destroyer?"
"Well, Grand Admiral, it houses crew quarters and the sizable reactor."
"Yes. A bit too sizable. Decentralize the reactor and place smaller ones nearer the aft of the ship."
"But, sir. The reactor size is necessary power the ship's many functions. I'm not sure smaller decentralized reactors would provide enough..."
"You will then remove 80% of the Crew Quarters and 50% of the original designated space for the reactor. This should help reduce power deficiencies."
"Remove the Crew Quarters? But... but... but... how will we house the crew? That would nearly completely remove the space for our imperial troopers."
"Ah yes. The Emperor does enjoy his waves of overwhelming force. However, from my experience air superiority is a far more valuable asset, providing support for a smaller more specialized ground force depending upon the situation."
"The primary hanger bay would be removed with this arrangement."
"Not removed, commander. Multiplied. And provided a more flexible and protected area by which to launch our star fighters."
    "Multiplied?? That... that just doesn't..."
"Hanger bays take minimal power. And their new proximity to the ship's main fuel supply will render the currently redundant fueling tanks unnecessary, conserving space and fuel."
"This is all just... the space requirements alone make this design..."
"My dear, commander. I haven't even told you about the aft gravity well..."
(Totally realize this assessment could be super off. LOVE the design. Not sure if the bulb in the back is the reactor or a gravity well, but I really like it none the less)

If Thrawn designed a Star Destroyer, we would get something like the Ascendancy class SD, on par with the ISD I but faster and more durable... and carrying a lot more fighters. All that while being ca. 300 meters shorter than an ISD.
The other option would be the Peltast class SD... which is rather squishy once the shields are down, but isn't intended to get close and "blast 'em" anyway. Rather it's a huge gun, and kind of works like a Sniper/Sharpshooter, staying at distance and behind the support ships and more tanky SD's while targeting the largest threats the enemy has brought to the battle with its main gun.

I’m fairly sure that’s just a aft Reactor.. You can see some of the housing for it, so if they can detach it in emergencies.. if it was a Gravity wells projector, it could only project it interdiction field on vessels behind it.. (Why nearly all GWPs are placed as they are on other interdictor vessels so every direction can be covered)
An enemy behind you is still an enemy behind you so I don’t see why it would be very useful.. specially when your a priority target..

I love this design a lot because it feels organic.
It strikes me as a conceived Super Star Destroyer that was scrapped halfway through production--whether because a better design came along, resources were suddenly diverted, or they needed to accelerate the timetable of construction and just slapped the rest of it together, it all *fits* into one iconic and interesting design. The Empire needed a new warship, so instead of filling in the central body, they made her spaceworthy and battle-ready and launched her.
She seems like a hybrid of a Star Destroyer and a space station--massive arms reaching forward, hangars full of ships waiting to swarm into space, all protected by banks upon banks of guns. I can easily see this ship nestling just behind the front lines of Imperial space, receiving damaged frigates and corvettes in her forward hangars for emergency repairs while constantly receiving deliveries of freshly-assembled TIEs to distribute to freighters and carriers for deployment to the front lines. And if the conflict on a planet becomes too heated, she can jump in herself and provide a direct forward repair station to the front lines, while remaining an unassailable target thanks to her massive ion cannons and turbolaser banks.
Position her and that Interdictor along the right hyperspace lane, too, and you can ensure that Rebels can't make deliveries between their worlds, while providing a safe haven for Imperial forces raiding or invading those same systems.

It feels like every time I watch this video, I notice more details I previously missed. There are several banks of laser cannons I just noticed, as well as what may be a few Ion cannons dotted around the ship in ball turret form.
The play of light and shadow among the fleet is just as excellent as the sound design. That ominous rumble as we move around the stern of the ship has me grinning as we fly past. Thanks for sharing this with us, so WORTH the wait!

An amazing film, what I love - even though the quality of the models is sheer brilliance - but what sells the film so well is the soundscape, it feels so genuine with the different engines producing not only a different tone but a different frequency. Truly the force is with this film.

And then there's the smaller ships. I love how you've adopted EC's Imperial Nebulon B design, it fits right in next to the Lancers. The best part of your animations is undoubtedly the way everything looks like it's made with miniatures and filmed with old cameras like in the original trilogy. Truly splendid work!
