EXACTLY! This random background redshirt carrier from the computer games made just too much common sense. See that big Imperial Star Destroyer with all those turbo lasers and a crew of 17,000 but only 72 fighters? Here’s a few big flying hangar bays with room for hundreds more!
This is starting to step on the toes of previously established lore. It was my understanding that hyperdrives are somewhat imprecise in their exit points. Glad to see my favorite ship from legends covered! Hope to see the Ton Falk introduced back into canon, although since the Quasars have been reintroduced in that role it's probably a slim chance at best.
I'm fairly sure it is mentioned on one of the canon books as an "Imperial Escort Carrier". I distinctly remember the wiki incorrectly attributing that appearance to the Imperial Escort Carrier (from Rogue Squadron 3)
@@needude7218 it's hard to say since there's a ship actually named the Imperial Escort Carrier. Empire at War mods like TR and AotR have Ton-Falks though, and that's good enough for me.
Any carrier is good for the Rebels, you can see how effective "Midway" style engagements were in the flight sims. With capital ships never seeing each other directly.
I would love for a video on capital ship customization. Especially on the providence since that ship is said to be extremely adaptable and highly customizable
The Ton Falk carrier would still be very useful to the rebels, even with hyperdrive equipped starfighters. Hyperspace travel time does not come up much in canon, but if you have to sit in a fighter for 10 hours until you get to the fight) you’re not going to be at your best when you get there. Ton Falk’s could ferry fighters up to a short jump or two away from the target, launch fighters, then move to rendezvous location another short jump or two away. This way your pilots would be fresh and ready for action. Depending on the amenities of the Ton Falk. So maybe the Rebels used Ton Falks a lot, but you never see them in the front lines. Though admittedly, the rebels had a tendency to go “all in” and throw everything with a mounted gun into a battle.
Video idea. One of my favorite things in Star Trek is the refits of ships to make them meet evolving situations. These refits can be smaller or quite extensive, sometimes so extensive it’s hard to call them refits cause the ship is so much larger and more advanced. With that in mind, a series on how you refit Star Wars ships from fighters to capital ships would be a fun series.
When I saw the thumbnail I immediately thought this ship was just a large clunky aft section of a Dreadnaught, I’m glad you included one in the background for comparison
The Escort Carrier's a wonderfully simple ship, its basically a hanger surrounded by crew quarters and other facilities, a few mess halls, a powerplant and some engines and then some armour plating and guns. As a ship, its probably like the WW2 escort carriers or CVE's to give them their official name, or Combustable, Vulnerable, Expendable as their crews referred to them. But if the Imperial Navy had a brain and paired like 1 of these and say 4 - 6 Lancers with every pair of ISD's, you'd have a very nasty combination. Wonderful video as always.
Actually noticed this in the FoC Campaign remake mod. It jumps in, deploys fighters and jumps out, instead of just calling in fighters like you normally would
In the Awakening of the Rebellion mod you can build them with several different fighter complements (basic tie fighters and bombers, avengers and interceptors, XG-1 and brute and punishers, etc). They're nice.
In my legends story our back water Moff has tons of these they also become more useful in another way 1 Removing the fighter carrying capacity 2 fitting it with proton and concussion launchers
i always thought it was odd that the empire didnt have more simple pure carriers similar to our own naval carriers. i mean if you didnt use your main heavy weapon in heavy star destroyers as your only source of carriers in most battle engagements you could place your starfighters at far more strategic positions in the battle. not to mention, in the novels, how many times do we see the empire release their fighters from their star destroyers, since they dont have hypdrives either, and it takes them 5 to 8 minutes for the ties to get to the rebels from the destroyers. you could also free space up on the destroyer if they werent the only source of starfighter in the battle group. i loved this video eck. these are the kinds of videos that make me like your channel because youre looking at the strategic purpose of specific ships rather than just simply how cool they look or how much damage they can do. also, tapcaf transmissions is my favorite podcast. i spend a lot of time driving for work and i listen to it almos daily in the car
@@Mildcat743 Hey, it wasn't less than were needed. The Empire could easily outnumber a rebel battle group ten to one. Perhaps it is a pitiful amount, but considering the wars they were fighting? It was almost TOO much! If they'd had that number of actual quality fighters, they could likely have won the war.
Maybe not a deep dive but a more light episode on illegal modifications on ships, millennium falcon for example. Or the ship Luke used to find his new jedi recruits
I kinda want fractal to make a battleship varient the venator by replacing the top hanger with more weapons emplacements it will be a similar look but more firepower
The issue with though is that the Venator doesn't have the armor or the shields to go toe to toe with a similar ship without its fighter escort. That's why the main battery is a set of extremely large and long range cannons. It can support the fighters with heavy artillery fire but it really does not have stuff for close in knife fighting.
That would be a Victory class stardestroyers in a Venator halloween costume . Which would appear to open its Zip(hanger doors) to show it's stick (guns) instead of a Gap (starfighters hanger space)
I’ve always wanted to see a VS matchup between a Munificent class Cruiser and a UNSC destroyer, probably one of the new strident because it has shields. Both ships focus on heavy forward firepower, so it seems like it would be a good match
The Ton Falk has that uniquely-powerful computer for replacing a busted nav computer on a PC's ship - making it such a good target to craftily sneak onto, loot, set the timers on the detonators, and flee from. It was a good target for the Rebellion in roleplay games, because the Empire just didn't value it properly - it wasn't guarded like it should have been, and there just weren't enough of them, so launching a mission to slag the escort carrier in a support location before the main attack went down would take all those 72 fighters out of that important fight (or at least not leave them in a position to respond in strength.) So nice to see it here.
Also, I just want to say I feel like the ability for fighters to go into hyper space is overstated. It does have advantages and it is useful but I argue it's circumstantial. I liken it to fighters that would have the ability to cross the ocean to attack, I dunno, Not-Russia vs fighters sortieing from a carrier. Sending fighter squadrons off on their own far away from any support units is potentially precarious. You can very easily get cut off and isolated. It's a lot harder to rearm, repair, and refuel when you hyper jump far away. It is good for raiding, though. No question. Lightning strikes, in and out. But the Empire wasn't doing commerce raiding. It wasn't raiding isolated outposts and supply lines. It was fighting an insurgency and keeping planetary systems in check. ISDs acting as battle carriers is far more reasonable than anyone is giving credit, I feel. You don't need every fighter to have hyperdrives if all they are doing is screening capital ships. You don't need hyperdrive if your main offensive weapon are star destroyers that are capable of carrying fighter compliments. You just send an ISD into a theater and launch the fighters to either defend your capital ships or to strike whatever targets. The fighters just need to be able to cover the distance and I am pretty sure tie fighters are capable of that. I argue the Tie Fighter not having deflector shields is a much bigger issue.
I would love to see a series of videos that had your “perfect fleet” from each faction say then the final one where your able to pick and choose from all factions. Would love to see that, and a shoutout wouldn’t kill ya 😉
I would love to hear your opinion regarding the potential for the Empire to utilize freighter sized ships to both take on Rebel fighters and also work together using wolf pack tactics to harass larger ships. I think the Empire already has an excellent (albeit expensive) ship for this role in the VT-49 Decimator.
I would be really interested by more ships videos ! An idea could be Old Republic ships, maybe we don't have a lot of intel on the tactics I don't know but it could be really interesting ! To know more about the harrower star destroyer and its uses and its ennemies in the Old Republic Navy.
Strike Cruiser series would make an interesting video. The original Strike, KDY Strike, Interdictor Strike and Gorath Strike show how versatile the design is and it has really good firepower for its size with its turbolasers and concussion missiles. Not only does it have firepower, but it also carries some TIEs and is faster than most frigates. Strike cruiser was used by all sides, which makes it even more interesting and it's actually featured in several books including X-Wing and Thrawn trilogy
Not to mention a ton Faulk could carry repair and support ships too. Have them hang out off site, pop in after ships start getting hit, pop out from the dangerous bits, rinse repeat
Or just have a FULL ( and expanded ) hangar of TIE-Interceptors with shield upgrade. The whole idea that Empire needed carriers is IMHO stupid. They already had them - ISDs, all they needed is actually using them properly, and replace useless TIEs. And move all ground stuff (troops and vehicles) to Acclamators.
@@Arthur_Revan Acclamators can also be used as carriers, they could theoretically carry ~190 TIE fighters only on it's LAAT racks. But the main advantage of the Acclamator is its hyperdive (class 0.6), it's one of the fastest ships period. This means that one Acclamator can cower lots of space and be at moments notice, it would arrive muuch faster then the ISD, and if you're not fighting capital ships why pay more? Thus, I believe, Acclamators would be best ships for police and peacekeeping duties (that empire actually requires). And if it faces something too powerful (even accounting for it's huge fighter complement), it could call ISD for reinforcement.
The Carrack-class light cruiser and the Marauder-class corvette are a couple of my favorite ships and don't get much attention. the Ton Falk-class has also been a favorite of mine for a long time, they were always a key ship in my fleets when playing Star Wars: Rebellion.
You've done matchups including it, but I'd love to see a stand-alone video on the Harrower-class. Another ship I'd love to see is the Invincible-class Dreadnought I'd also love to see the Imperial II-class Frigate, the Guardian-class "light cruiser", the Tartan-class "patrol cruiser", the Pursuit-class light cruiser, and the Neutron Star-class bulk cruiser.
the Escort Cruiser would be another nice topic. they look awesome and very different from most stuff in star wars. they were also though as nails in X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter and Alliance! it even got an interdictor variant.
These are in the Rebellion game for the PC. Old game but very cool if you like saving resources and building up a fleet very deliberately. I remember these being really useful because they could carry multiple TIE Fighters.
That's a neat ship! I have a homebrew TIE Ace Squadron I spun together for Age of Rebellion; sort of an Imperial Rogue Squadron, and one thing I had trouble giving them wad a carrier, ad I didn't just want them to rock up in an ISD. I might have to look into this! I'd love to hear something about Legacy ships, to see how things improved in Legends, over the course of the century plus following RotJ. I'm a big fan of Legacy, so hearing about X-83 Twintails and Predators could be entertaining!
WW2 carriers did not have to worry about the enormous power sources needed for weapons and shields. I know that carriers had massive citadel spaces for engines, fuel, etc, but the power for shields in star wars and durasteel armor is not comparable to the power that WW2 era ships would need for engines. Additionally, an ISD is closer to a battleship, meaning that even more of its space is dedicated to the massive engines and armor. It would be better to compare the ISD to the Ise class battlecarriers of the Japanese navy in WWII, not dedicated carriers like the Yorktown class. These, like the ISD, were battleships first with a small aircraft compliment. These ships could hardly hold 5 planes, and their numbers were thus low in fighter compliment just like an ISD because most of their space was dedicated to armor and weaponry. So, accounting for the size and energy demands of a star destroyer, 76 is a very good number.
72 was the size of a Wing at least in the old rpg. A star destroyer was also supposed to have the same number. As a kid I was fascinated reading those rule/lore books. I imagined it as the standard imperial docking bay with a box around it.
EDIT: the reason I am comparing the carriers to the star destroyer is because the ship that eck is discussing was mostly likely just the ISD's docking bay, as Lynch said.
Yes, keep this type of content coming BUT with one small addition. While it may seem repetitive to the many captains and rear admirals on here, please give a QUICK rundown on what the ship class means. Don't assume we all know what a capital ship or a corvette is. Otherwise, great stuff, J!
After a quick check, the typical compliment of TIE line starfighters on an ISD from Imperial I class through to the Interdictor class is 72 and the Ton Falk carries 72 TIE line starfighters so it seems to me that their main purpose was probably relegated to that of logistics rather than combat and would make runs from say a planetary based Sector repair station and ISDs to replace down TIEs with operational ones. We see Rebels working on their starfighters like on Hoth and on Yavin, we saw Clones working on fighters on the Republic Venators in the Clone Wars movies and animated series but I can't recall ever seeing imperials working on TIEs, even Maintenance, in any movies or the Rebels animated series which leads me to believe the Ton Falk acted more like a ferry to ferry new TIEs to ISDs and take old, worn out and damaged TIEs to a base to be repaired, fixed up and brought back to specs or scrapped.
I love these things in Star Wars: Rebelion (PC 1998) they let you move a decent amount of firepower for relatively little cost. But they are vulnerable as heck as the rebel fighters can close the distance from the planet to space or from fleet to fleet before all the Ties launch due to the single hangar bay since the rebel fighters come in under their own power and are already battle ready on arrival (as if not having shields wasn't enough of a disadvantage for the ties). Still, with ISDs carrying half as many fighters and the Victory Class Star Destroyers carrying a single squadron, they are invaluable through the entire campaign, unlike nearly every other ship class from the start of the game. In the endgame you can load them up with Tie Defender squadrons, or a mix of Defenders and bombers thus eliminating their biggest shortcoming and making them a very powerful asset to the fleet indeed.
That ship looks like the ultimate dream drop carrier for the imperial Army. It looks like it might be one of the few ships able to actually carry and deploy an Army group with all its large ground vehicles with out needing 10 trips to do so. lol. The army and its support ships have long been ignored in a lot of Star Wars references. :(
I remember playing the game Star Wars: Rebellion, the 1998 PC strategy 4X game, as a game it was a nightmare to issue commands and movements, too much micro management... but passing that steep learning curve, it was decent game, specially playing against a friend, also it was a very long game, I played it a couple of time with my friend and each time took about a weekend, 3 full days of playing non stop... you play as the Rebellion or the Empire, build you fleets, invade planets, do space battles, move the main characters around doing diplomacy, espionage, Jedi Training, it had it all... the AI was a not up to a high standard, it would put up a fight at the begining but by mid game it would fall apart if you attack from multiple directions... I still have fun with it...
I remember loving it when one of these would hyper in and absolutely dump reinforcements in certain missions in TIE Fighter. A criminally underrated ship.
Who remembers Star Wars Rebellion? So many incredible ships from that game that are finally getting the recognition they deserve. That game was 20 years ahead of its time.
Videos for spacecrafts and such? What about breakdowns of all the various military forces and factions active throughout star wars history. Like complete from the ground up. Give basic stats and specs of the various crafts, almost like an archive of star wars ship history and a resource for others to use, all in the same format. The more obscure the better, like a wiki in video form.
The only time I remember seeing this ship being used in a game was when it delivered advanced TIE fighters as reinforcements. The ship was probably just used to transport replacement fighters and pilots and then returned to bring replacements for the replacements, while the late Imperial doctrine squandered crews and materials.
USS Saratoga: Space Above and Beyond deep dive and/or a vs with like the Galactica or something! Space Above and Beyond was my favorite show as a kid and it's criminal it didn't get picked up for another season!!
I can also see the Tan Falk be used as a micro station in an area for lesser used areas. I think a Rebellion controlled Tan Falk could be an interesting mobile drydock for fighters.
Do we actually have any hard numbers to be able to say "the Empire ignored frigates and escort carriers"? Maybe they were there...maybe they did have enough of them, and they're just off-screen.
A star destroyer was a combination of a battleship and a carrier. It did carry fighters but yes, a dedicated carrier that could launch thousends of fighters would have had a very real use, especially for close ground support roles. Basically park it above an enemy instalation and defend it with star destroyers while 5000 Tie fighters decend onto enemies on the planet and claim total air superiority in about 30 seconds flat. There is no escape from the rebel base and ground forces are completely protected from enemy air units.
I love the sheer audacity of the empire to name their ship after a battle they lost due to the lack of said ship as a 'this will never happen again' statement.
I think smaller Imperial factions or even the Corporate Sector would appreciate that kind of ship. I could imagine The Pentastar Alignment would appreciate this carrier alongside their picket cruisers and aging Victory Star Destroyers. 1 or 2 of these carriers, a handful of Carrack gunships, 4 cruisers and at least 1 or 2 Victories is enough to pacify a heavy pirate squadron.

I used to play, "Sins of a Galactic Empire", a mod for, "Sins of a Solar Empire". It has these carriers, and were one of my favorite ships to build.
i love this thing, it's like a hanger with engines (and really satisfying to use in Empire At War: Awakening The Rebellion)
I love seeing what the auto-generated subtitles do in their attempt to spell Ton Falk.
“Imperial,” “Star Destroyer,” and “fetish” are four words I never expected to be combined in that way.
I always kept a few of these in my Imperial fleets in Star Wars Rebellion... The Rebel scum never stood a chance!
In my legends story our back water Moff has tons of these they also become more useful in another way
1 Removing the fighter carrying capacity
2 fitting it with proton and concussion launchers
i always thought it was odd that the empire didnt have more simple pure carriers similar to our own naval carriers. i mean if you didnt use your main heavy weapon in heavy star destroyers as your only source of carriers in most battle engagements you could place your starfighters at far more strategic positions in the battle. not to mention, in the novels, how many times do we see the empire release their fighters from their star destroyers, since they dont have hypdrives either, and it takes them 5 to 8 minutes for the ties to get to the rebels from the destroyers. you could also free space up on the destroyer if they werent the only source of starfighter in the battle group. i loved this video eck. these are the kinds of videos that make me like your channel because youre looking at the strategic purpose of specific ships rather than just simply how cool they look or how much damage they can do.
also, tapcaf transmissions is my favorite podcast. i spend a lot of time driving for work and i listen to it almos daily in the car
the Empire did not ignore carriers.... star destroyer carried 72 fighters.
problem was poor fighters and an attrition/replacement mindset
The sad part is the Empire did have good starfighters but refused to use them
72 fighters in a ship the size of an ISD is pitiful. Venators could carry nearly 3 times that when fully loaded.
@@Mildcat743 the trick there is that most vens never even got close to being fully loaded during the clone wars
@@Mildcat743 Hey, it wasn't less than were needed. The Empire could easily outnumber a rebel battle group ten to one. Perhaps it is a pitiful amount, but considering the wars they were fighting? I kinda want fractal to make a battleship varient the venator by replacing the top hanger with more weapons emplacements it will be a similar look but more firepower
The issue with though is that the Venator doesn't have the armor or the shields to go toe to toe with a similar ship without its fighter escort. That's why the main battery is a set of extremely large and long range cannons. It can support the fighters with heavy artillery fire but it really does not have stuff for close in knife fighting.
I, uh, think you just described an ISD.
That would be a Victory class stardestroyers in a Venator halloween costume . Which would appear to open its Zip(hanger doors) to show it's stick (guns) instead of a Gap (starfighters hanger space)

Yeah, pretty much every ship the Imperials didn't want, they'd grab.
I’ve always wanted to see a VS matchup between a Munificent class Cruiser and a UNSC destroyer, probably one of the new strident because it has shields.
Both ships focus on heavy forward firepower, so it seems like it would be a good match

This was a good one to do man. It’s in a lot of the empire of war mods and I’d never seen or heard of it before but I used it lot.
Video idea: Did Palpatine have the capability and knowledge to build his own starforge?
I remember these things in old games - one of there main strengths was that with a low poly count it looks very like an astroid.
The Ton Falk has that uniquely-powerful computer for replacing a busted nav computer on a PC's ship - making it such a good target to craftily sneak onto, loot, set the timers on the detonators, and flee from. It was a good target for the Rebellion in roleplay games, because the Empire just didn't value it properly - it wasn't guarded like it should have been, and there just weren't enough of them, so launching a mission to slag the escort carrier in a support location before the main attack went down would take all those 72 fighters out of that important fight (or at least not leave them in a position to respond in strength.)
So nice to see it here.
Something i would be interested in would be an full ebon hawk breakdown and history video
They just pulled the hangar bay out of an ISD and slapped engines on it.
I would love to see a series of videos that had your “perfect fleet” from each faction say then the final one where your able to pick and choose from all factions. Would love to see that, and a shoutout wouldn’t kill ya 😉
I really enjoy learning about ships like these. Small ones that we rarely hear about. I’d like to hear one on the Tarken cruiser.
When your fighters depend on numbers to win, might as well bring dedicated carriers solely meant to bring more to battle.
Not to mention a ton Faulk could carry repair and support ships too. Have them hang out off site, pop in after ships start getting hit, pop out from the dangerous bits, rinse repeat
I would love to see a video on ridiculous concepts for ships and/or fighters that got the go ahead and actually turned to be a good idea or effective.
Imagine if - ISDs had an adequate number of point defense lasers and missiles, placed around the vessel to cover all angles.
Yes...a video on the Ton-Falk
The Carrack-class light cruiser and the Marauder-class corvette are a couple of my favorite ships and don't get much attention. the Ton Falk-class has also been a favorite of mine for a long time, they were always a key ship in my fleets when playing Star Wars: Rebellion.

72 starfighters seems small when a ww2 carrier had up to 90 fighters on board and was a fraction of the size.
Kinda irrelevant when you don't have to make your own atmosphere
@@fightingdreamer123 none of that matters anymore Disney doesn’t care. I’m not sure if George Lucas ever cared either.

Figures that the thumbnail was made by Fractal Sponge. He makes some of the best 3d ships on the internet.
I remember playing "Star Wars: Rebellion" as a kid, when the Tong Fog was called the "Galleon class escort carrier". God I feel old now....
I’d love see some retro Star Wars ship games as a hybrid gameplay/ship lore style block, but recognize that’s a big departure from your norm.
Maybe the life stories of star wars characters? Could be a neat series for the channel?
The phrase "a hangar with engines" would have been very useful in this video :)
I remember these from The XWing franchise and Rebellion. Glad to see these classic Legends ships get love
Would love to see more of your re-imaginings of the background ships from the movies
It's such a beautiful design in my opinion. Substance only utility before any kind of posturing into looking intimidating or anything.
I'd like to see a video on the Harrower class dreadnaught from the old republic.
Maybe a VS video where it fights the Dreadnaught heavy cruiser.
:)
I appreciate hearing the core community of players output. I once was this game rocks⚡
