    With the whole wings thing, typically a good Sci fi way to write them off is as radiators. In space, unless you keep spewing out some coolant the only way to get rid of heat generated from systems is by having it radiate off the ships surface. As such having something large and flat like a wing is a good way to do that, even on the IRL ISS you can see some white panels that are doing just that. So on the lambda for example, having the wings deploy out so no surface is facing another, and thus not just radiating heat back at itself, makes some sense; as does having a ship need more radiators for something intensive like combat, like the s foils going to attack mode on an X-wing. Mind you IRL radiators wouldn't look much like wings but it's a good enough explanation for star wars I think.

It had the Jack of all trades feel of the Defender (it has shields, and lasers, and ion cannons, and ordinance, AND hyperdrive), but without being better than every other fighter out there. It gives up superiority in one field to be able to act in others.

    About the assault gunboat. My headcanon for it was that its what happens if you take a Lambda shuttle and put weapons on it and later on refine it a bit. But to me it was allways an armed shuttle.
    Also the image you use, that looks a lot more advanced and at the same time more like a SG1 ship then what I remember from the old TieFighter game. On the other hand that could just be bad memories.

      @andrewrichards312 2 года назад +8

      And it's rightfully rendered obsolete by its younger sibling, the Missile Boat. The problem with the "it doesn't look like it belongs in Star Wars" argument is that the argument acts like there are no other Starfighter manufacturers in the Star Wars universe, besides Seinar and Incom.

    • @wun1gee
      @wun1gee 2 года назад +9

      @@andrewrichards312 It still has the missile boat beat in energy weapons versatility. Laser cannons and ion cannons where as the missile boat just has a single laser cannon.
      But I agree. If we're going to judge the XG-1 on whether or not it looks Star Wars enough (which is silly considering the Lambda is a thing) then a lot of fighters are called into question under the same argument. R-41? IRD? Literally tons. It's silly. It's like saying the F-22 doesnt look airplane enough despite being an airplane.

    • @andrewrichards312
      @andrewrichards312 2 года назад +3

      @@wun1gee Energy weapons are irrelevant though, because the smart Missile Boat Pilot will never get into a close range dogfight where they're even useful. The Missile Boat is essentially the ultimate sniper of all starfighters. A smart pilot will never use their laser cannon as it directly powers the SLAM system. Instead, they'll get close enough to target a ship, launch missiles and then SLAM back to a safe distance. With one missile launcher always carrying 40 concussion missiles, you've got a fair amount of liberty to spam enemies with. The Missile Boat can even outrun missiles with the SLAM system engaged, so short of someone getting very skilled and very cute with a hyperdrive, or being unlucky and having enemies drop out of hyperspace right on top of you while your SLAM system has its energy depleted, the only thing that poses a legitimate threat to the Missile Boat, is another Missile Boat. (Yes this was my favourite starfighter in Star Wars: Tie Fighter :-P )
      Don't get me wrong, the only thing I rate higher than an XG-1 Starwing at close range dogfighting is a TIE Defender (yes, I'd take an XG-1 over a TIE Avenger any day of the week and twice on Sunday). However I rate a missile boat as being superior to both when you understand what I guess you'd call "dog-sniping" tactics.

    • @wun1gee
      @wun1gee 2 года назад +4

      @@andrewrichards312 That's the same argument they used when they designed the F-4 Phantom. The gun is irrelevant. Who would ever need a gun on something as fast as the Phantom when everyone's just slinging missiles at each other?
      Then Phantoms started getting shot down by MiGs with guns.
      But yeah I do agree the two serve different roles. The XG-1's a space superiority fighter and the XM-1's a strike craft. As such their mission profiles don't really overlap.
      They're both exceptionally cool and I hope one day we'll get to see one in canon.

    • @andrewrichards312
      @andrewrichards312 2 года назад +3

      @@wun1gee The argument about the F-4 is a false equivalency, as you're essentially equating an F4 with a what would effectively be a Harrier with hypersonic capabilities. The F4 simply isn't capable of hovering in place to snipe enemies with missiles, turning on a dime and then going hypersonic. The XM-1 is due to both the nature of the SLAM and space combat. It's entirely possible to drift into gun range in an F-4 because of the nature of both Air Combat and its lack of hover capabilities unless you're really careful as a pilot. With the XM-1 however you've got to be very careless, oblivious (ignoring a missile lock) and have a deathwish, in order to become an easy target.
      That said, I do think the ideal squadron formation for the Empire would have been 1 or 2 XG-1s and the rest of the squadron being made up of XM-1s. The XG-1s can keep the enemy occupied, while the 1 or 2 XM-1's can pick off any enemy fighters attacking the XG-1s, while taking out any capital ships - all from long distance.

    You're on to something with the TIE Raptor, remove the wings. Its the 'absolute minimum starfighter'. It has only what you need for combat in the least expensive package possible; no sensors to be jammed, no complex shield generators, no hyperdrives that can fail. If it wasn't for the dangers of micrometeors I'd suggest removing the hull and just having the spaceframe.

      Aesthetically folding wings look cool, but in practice they drastically increase the risk of mechanical failure, which is detrimental for something designed to operate in space. The additional costs that come with increased maintenance requirements aren't suitable for a cost cutting faction like the Empire that's diverting so much funds and resources into super weapons.

    *In defence of the Tie Raptor and Scythe*
    The Scythe could be fixed by just having all the guns _be in turrets_ on either side of the blade, so they have 180° coverage. And that means with them side mounted with clear line of sight, _all_ the main firepower can hit equally front and rear arcs, with ½ the guns hitting on broadsides or above or below (assuming staggered layout).
    Then it becomes far more effective than standard hull layouts.
    And as for the Tie Raptor, that's actually a better design for the wings/panels than other Ties (including the Defender 😱) as it solves the biggest issue most Ties have … the panels blocking line of sight of the pilot.
    Even the Defender had a lot of blind spots from it's panels…
    It just looks wrong due to proportioning, the panels seem to small and stubby. If they were a bit bigger (each half the size of a standard Ties, so that with twice the panels it's the same surface area) and there was a bit of body work on the ball for anchor points, then it would look formidable.
    But if you assume that they somehow shrunk down the needed surface area of the panels without sacrificing performance, then this thing would be lethal… hard to hit due to small target profile, even side on, and the panels being perpendicular to the pilot allow unobstructed viewing out of the tiny little front only facing cockpit window …

    _I think I've spotted a flaw?_

      I thought the Sythe's guns _were_ in turrets with something like 90+ degrees traverse off-axis. Certainly looks like it has turrets on the sides of the fin.
      So yeah, it's optimized for forward firing but it can still cover its flanks (just not its rear) with half its arsenal per side unless I'm greatly mistaken.
      Ekhart claiming the ship could only fire straight ahead seems a terrible misread to me.

    I've come to really like the scythe.
    It's fair to say the concentrated firepower is a weakness but that could also be due to doctrine. The mc 140 has massive engines too so I assume it functions kind of like an eldar ship from battlefleet gothic, doing boom and zoom attacks concentrating all fire power on key points of the enemy.
    Wookie also mentions a cross of fire mode that MetaNerdz assumed it ment a component beam laser like the on the blade wing in rebels. If that's the case it could be a justification for the configuration in order to fire in such a way.
    The scythe was also standardised and mass produced, and it's weaponry is ratted as batteries, not individual turrets. This could mean each battery is itself a module that either allows some degree of customization or helps streamline construction.
    So the way I see the ship working considering its hyperdrive us that it'd pop into a system in a battle group of 3 with some escorts. The main ships make their run on the target and the escorts engage the scattered enemy while the other ships reposition for another pass and then pop out of need be. Alternatively they could also be used as long range "sniper vessels" leaving most of the brawling to the small ships and fighter wings.

      Not EC-Henry, but I wouldn't mind giving my own spin on it! I personally see it as kind of an imperial weapon platform, meant to shoot as many guns at once as it can. This is why it's got a more flat design, as well as the towered guns, allowing all of them to have a much wider arc of fire. I also imagine it's more speedy than the standard imperial ship, which is why it's overall sleeker, has a large number of engines, as well as those 'wings' it has (which I know probably provide very minimal advantage in space). Something also to note is that the command bridge is much smaller than most 'star destroyer' like ships, making the entire ship less of a target.

    If you look at every single small craft/fighter in Star Wars, you’ll notice almost all of them have some form of wing. Like the star viper, it has the main engine, but in order to be able to rapidly turn it needs the s-foils/wings, to make up for the fact that in only has one thruster. Whereas bigger ships like a mon-calamari cruiser will simply boost or lower power to a couple thrusters. Maybe small crafts/fighters have the engines, but for them to be fast moving and maneuverable like the tie, they need a balancing factor like the wings to be able to make turns and quick maneuvers.
    That’s how I always liked to look at it anyways

    I'd be quite interested in seeing a video that you devote entirely to the various Uglies. X-Tie, Y-Tie, Z-Ceptor, etc etc, and critiquing/analyzing/mocking them in the same way you did here. Mind you they all did have a purpose, but...some of them just LOOK like really bad asset-smashes that someone did without thinking about how it'd actually work.

      I love the Uglies. Perhaps not every combo, but the concept itself falls right in line w/ George's concept of a "lived in world" as well as his well known love of the custom car culture. When SW was introduced in the late 70's it was common to see custom car "blends" such as throwing a Rolls grille on a VW, a pickup bed on a 'Vette, or a Chevy small block in a Ford roadster... real world Uglies (depending on taste, of course)

    One thing that ALWAYS bothers me about space fighters, especially ones that are unusual in shape, size, configuration, or have to do some kind of weird origami just to land... Those things would be an absolute bitch to try to land in ANY bay. Bays are supposed to be general sized, and able to accomodate ships of 'any' design. But looking at that stupid Resistance lander harmonica, I keep thinking "This thing takes up the space of like, 3 small star fighters. If they just rotated the entire body and cockpit so it was a flying TUBE, maybe it could land normally like the First Order drop ships (honestly I love that design) instead of taking up three parking spaces."
    My concern also extends to TIE fighters. Those solar wing things, unless they condense and collapse when not in use so the thing can deploy landing struts, they either need to land ON the edges of the wings (which would have to support all that weight, and the cockpit could be 20 feet off the ground at that point), or they'd need a special armature/docking clamp just to hold the bloody things, like a B5 Starfury. And you would HAVE to have those clamps to land it. They take up space that could be better used to say, have smaller bays that hold fighters that can sit on their own struts and aren't 80 feet tall from base-of-sail to tip.
    Some designs I like. Others I condemn so fast. Especially when it's a design thrown together to fill a hole in 'we need a new looking ship'. or 'we want to market a new toy, and this is the design we came up with'.

      See, I like fighter designs that fold up for a smaller landing profile, and this is a big reason. Like, the B-wing's foils folding in, makes it a little easier for it to fit in a crowded or narrow bay.

    I never really thought about it, but I can see your point. The assault gunboat really COULD be at home in many other shows. I'm still a fan, since it was the first ship you got in Tie Fighter that natively got shields, but I can agree to disagree. :)
    Thoroughly enjoyed the vid! I hope you continue this as a series!

    Fun video! 😁 In the same family as the Rogue Shadow or IG-2000 I'd also like to distinguish the Sith Fury-class Interceptor from Star Wars The Old Republic. Same no visibility central cockpit, and I always thought its Interceptor designation curious. It's a huge ship designed for long trips, not a fighter designed around speed and fire power.

    I get that Assault Gunboats don't fit the Imperial aesthetic, but to me they're indelibly linked to the Empire because I played X Wing Alliance obsessively back in the day. The Empire would definitely be much more dangerous if they'd invested more in them and their advanced next-gen TIE programmes. Luckily for the Rebellion, the Empire was run by cheapskates.
    EDIT: Oh, you noted the Gunboats looked similar to the Lambda shuttles? It's 'cause they're made by the same company. So really, they aren't such an aesthetic deviation.

      I feel like they were added to X-Wing/Tie Fighter so the Empire could have star fighters that had Ion cannons so they could write campaigns where both sides could disable capital ships lol. It does feel somewhat out of place amongst TIE fighters though.
      Love the TIE Advanced X1 in X Wing Vs Tie Fighter though, most lethal fighter in the game IMHO.

    Can you please do the mg-100 starfortress sf-17 next? I know you've made fun of it before but I haven't seen those videos and it's always a fun ship to make fun off. Also can you talk about how ridiculous it is that it's the most overpowered ship in Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga? It has the highest damage per shot and fire rate on its cannons out of any ship and has infinite torpedoes.

    Oh this was gold, I've not laughed so hard at a utube vid in goddamn ages! I'll def be looking out for the next entries. I don't even care what ships you tear apart, it's great material. Just... not the avenger, ok? :P

      @@DIEGhostfish in the TIE fighter game lore it was supposed to be a relatively new design at the time of the Battle of Yavin but I think it works better as an older design, an attempt to replace the Y-wing and ARC-170 that somehow kept its utility well into the TIE series domination of Imperial star fighter doctrine. It outclassed the Bomber but was itself outclassed by the Avenger and Defender.
      I love the Gunboat, it was so fun trying to squeeze enough speed out if it in order to stay relevant in the later missions.
