The IMPERIAL Nebulon-B Frigate (Fan design)

- The Nebulon-B has long been considered a Rebel vessel, but canonically this frigate was originally an Imperial vessel. I took on the challenge of creating what that might have looked like.

I designed and modeled this ship, with input from Angelos Karderinis who provided much of the hangar bay interior, as well as all of the renders in this video. Check out his work!

This model was a big undertaking that included input from a lot of people.
Angelos Karderinis was instrumental in fleshing out the hangar and rendering virtually all the beauty shots for the video.
The Rebel Nebulon comes from Adam Burch of Hangar-B productions. So that's his Nebulon when we're fading between the two versions. We used it as a guide to the proportions for the Imperial version, and a few of its components are still visible in the final model, too!
Some of the details (particularly in the hangar) are also sourced from other artists, such as Ole Magnus Schei Sunnevåg (who has incredible Star Wars renders on ArtStation under that name). Many additional greeble details come from Howard Day (who can also be found on ArtStation with that name).
I remember when I ask you to do this a couple months back. I dont know if you did this in response to my request, but whether or not you did, these results far exceeded what my imagination could conceive of. Thank you so much for bringing a richer and deeper feeling to the ships we all know and love.
now can we have a remade Venator that's more heavily armed, armored, and has a smarter, all-around better design
Your team work deserve the highest praise.
I am not complaining, but you are overqualified for this job.
This design is absolutely awesome, it should be made official! Some parts remind me a little bit of the Raider-class corvette. Did you use it as inspiration?
BTW I think it would be nice, if you could do the Z-96 starfighter. It is only mentioned in one episode of Resistance and was introduced as the successor of the Z-95 Headhunter after the Clone Wars.
Imperial engineer: sir we have a new ship.
Officer: is it a triangle?
Engineer: no
Officer: I DONT WANT IT.

But personally I'd say his work on an accurate T-85 X-Wing takes the cake as his best :)
It's just so damn pretty!
Aaand happy B-day to your son too....
I know right
This reimagining makes so much sense! And it seems entirely possible and logical, one need look no further than the Y-wing bombers used by the Rebellion.
The armor was stripped and the parts simplified for maintenance and to increase speed, which was fitting considering the high speed hit-and-run tactics employed by the Rebellion. And this looks so good and the canon version legitimately looks stripped down by comparison.
Brilliant!
The Rebel Y-wings aren't the same model as Republic Y-wings, though. For all we know, they haven't been stripped at all.
Jack Rutledge Goembel have you seen Star Wars Rebels?
Jack Rutledge Goembel the Galactic Republic used both a dual seated and single seated Y-Wing. The rebels would later steal the single seat models and strip them down.
wonder if anyone thinks it would be a better idea if the Nebulon Bs were built by the Rebellion. i like the idea that EC-Henry's designs are the original model intended for the Empire and the The rebellion stole the plans and began building as many Nebulon-Bs as they could- hence the name "Nebulon B" its a stripped down version of the original. Not a fan of the "they stole it" since the Rebels have lots of Neby-Bs in service and lots get destroyed yet you still see tons of them. These would be the largest ships built by the Alliance completely from scratch and it fits since it does not take lots of resources to build- other ships in the Fleet like Mon Cals and Assault Frigates were conversions of existing ship
MR.Chickennuget 360, no, the Rebellion never really controlled the sorts of shipyards necessary to build production-line capital ships.
Henry, we need to get you hired by ILM because your a genius when it comes to ship designs.
don't forget fractalsponge and Angelos Karderinis, both create wonderful designs
Seriously, Disney, ILM, SOMEONE HIRE THESE PEOPLE

So we will no longer need these financiers committed to making profits at all costs for yesterday based on what they think is right for Star Wars .
I personally consider fan designs like this as part of my head-canon as they fit in nicely and only build upon the Disney Canon and Legends as well

After he saw the rebels using Nebulon B frigates.
Well hey, it isn't like the Rebels can afford to design many of their own types of ships since they're resource poor so they have no choice but to steal ships from the Empire or obtain them from the black market......
@@girlgarde and...
Same for the X-Wings.
@@Jpeg.g so they couldn't easily get around all the immensely overpowering authoritarian controls the Empire had on everything in order to have their own facilities for a full supply-to-end-of-production-chain to produce stuff... is roughly what he (ryan macdonald) should have said
@@girlgarde Almost, but not quite [this isn't a video game ;))]. Being resource poor and getting things from black market at the same time is something of a contradiction. You might be able to get some things from the "black market", but probably not whole ships, and certainly not ships that wouldn't need extensive modification to be made combat-worthy... so that part might be true about what "the Rebels can afford"...
combined with what they can steal (and then presumably welded on to their civilian-or-black-market-bought, non-military-yet-easily-modified-large-ships or something).
But, the inability to design ships is not really based on being "so resource poor" per-say, but probably more of just having fewer than their adversary as well as having to get around an opponent who already controlled the entire government, economy and field of battle (so the whole construction/production loop for large projects like that of a space combat frigate). So, basically, it seems somewhat incomplete/confusing without a conclusion after the "......." [such as the one i wrote below in response to Jpeg.]
Just saying. :)
This makes a little more sense as it’s heavily armored
I agree , that thin mid-section on the original always had me worried it would break apart at any given moment. In this way it looks like a ship that's a tough nut to crack

―Imperial Admiral Hurkk at the Battle of Oovo IV
That's why I like the galactic civil war era
I have always thought the Nebulon-B looked way too weak. This would explain that like the Clone Wars Y-Wing vs the New Hope Y-Wing.
Pretty much. The Nebulon B design canonically hints at this being pretty close to what we would call an out off the dock Imperial Nebulon B.
The Nebulon B was always one of my favorite ships due to the crazy design. Your interpretation looks super bombad. It makes sense, because the YWing we see in the films and such are themselves stripped of armour playing as seen in Clone Wars.
Such a gorgeous ship, undoubtedly one of my favorites you've done so far. I'd love to see you give the Resistance ships from TLJ like the Nebulon-C and Bunker Buster the same treatment at some point, since it's pretty obvious those ships were partially scrapped and missing a pretty hefty amount of the armor plating and such they originally had when fresh off the production line
Good idea
I wonder what the disgusting Nebulon-C looked liked originally?
Give this comment some more likes so Henry can do a video on what the New Republic Nebular C looked like.
In this non canon continuity I imagine the C was simply another amalgam of salvaged Nebulon hardware pressed into service. Possibly existing in it's on screen form during the rebellion era or being assembled from vintage hardware by the resistance in a similar fashion to what the rebels had done.
@Aspiring Marauder More like a wreck.
What about the Nebulon-B2?
I think it looks pretty cool. Why you gotta hate on the Nebulon C?
Kota's Nebulon in Force Unleashed II had like a hundred A-wings and Y-wings as well as a whole damn railway connecting both ends
There's like no agreed-upon size for this thing
Which, considering they showed the Falcon attached to one of these things, would give a general estimate.
The Executor changes sizes in Star Wars with some regularity.
There is absolutely an agreed-upon size in Canon. That one Nebulon B in the force unleashed was a bizarre exception.
@@jackrutledgegoembel5896 Yeah, it was probably a Pillar of Autumn type situation where the ship was scaled up for gameplay purposes.
@@Exakter that's because it went to the gym regularly.
Perfection, that design... is just perfect.
Like the Y wing, this ship has seen better days.
I love the inclusion of the re-enforced midsection looking like the structural fins of the CR-90 which are clearly there for the same reason.
Or the struts added to the imperial Arquitens and Gozanti!
I’ve always wondered what the purpose of those fins on the ventral aft side were for, in universe. (Out of universe, I’m sure it was added just to look cool). But this realization make it look like the solar panels on TIE fighters, which I can totally get behind and enjoy, and the rebels found them without the solar panels, but decided to leave the rigging on there just in case more were to be found
Your designs always brigthen my day
I need this in Thrawns Revenge Mod for Empire at War!
agreed
Definitely
Holy shit that's amazing! I remember being like 8 and thinking that the Nebulon they showed in Empire was cool but looked like a deathtrap, this design maintains its interesting lines and overall hull architecture but actually manages to make something that doesn't look like a star destroyer could shoot it in half in under a second. I also really like the lore you came up with, as it's exactly like something the empire would do.
You have transformed a ship I was meh about to one that instantly garners my attention!
Engineer: sir here is the finished product.
Admiral: not enough dakka.
Engineer: what sir.
Admiral: I said your design lacks the minimum required firepower of imperial vessels.
Engineer: oh I see that's what I thought you said.
The Omnissiah demands more dakka.
Dakka dakka dakka!
*MOE DAKKA!!!*
Yes.
Engineer: But it's an escort frigate. It is for missions where even the Gladiator class would be massive overkill and inefficient usage of resources. It already has more than enough firepower and starfighter to deal with most expected pirate forces and lone backwater rebellious worlds. Star Destroyers are for major opposition like those Mon Cal Cruisers from Dac.
I always love these videos, especially the extended lore to justify all the alterations. They reminded me of the extensive work the designers for the Thunderbirds are Go! show put into updating the 60s style vehicles for the 21st century, with so many logical features added without compromising the iconic silhouette of the ships.
Agreed, updates/reimaginings when done well are a joy to behold. EC Henry The guys behind the new Thunderbirds series definitely fall into that category of design work.
@@inthert8118 I was just drooling when I first saw TB3 in action, the rotating cockpit, the utility arms, and all while keeping to the original silhouette, not to mention the redesign of the launch sequences!
This was such a great video! I love the concept of this Imperial Nebulon-B. I remember playing X-Wing as a kid and was shocked in my youthful naivety to find out from the game that this was originally Imperial hull design. I did, however, find it odd that the Empire would use such an "incomplete" looking ship, so this vision of it originally decked out in more Imperial fashion looks amazing! I also really liked the design of your speculative Nebulon-A with the smaller forward section, just a really cool look, and the interpretive leap you made to explain the extensive vertical section of the forward hull on the B was a neat idea. Amazing work, you really put a ton of effort into this and all of these videos and it shows! Thank you for your amazing work; we fans really appreciate it.
I've always hated those ships, as they literally look like junk just strung randomly together.
Somehow you managed to make them look amazing---fantastic work.
I think it looks cool. Except for the thing in the middle. I was so happy when I saw it get snapped in Rogue One
@@eternal5930 the ships rely on the shields to survive. most ships don't last long without shields regardless.
I love its "messy gun"-design but I know it's not everyone's taste.
They looked incredibly cool and added to the used-universe feel of the originals. The broken, assymeteic shape that suggested it was utilitarian and form-follows-function while it didn't need to be smooth or aerodynamic.
Now it looks like Star Trek.
And kids - technical interpretation of of anything Star War's never made sense, never will. It is designed to tell an emotional narrative, not a technical. Look too close and nothing makes sense. That's why all the design "developments" are complete bullshit.
From the Fusion-Designed ships, over the Jedi uniforms, over the Mandalorian armor to the old-mans-face of baby Joda. There is no continuity it's just BS to trigger nostalgia. Leave it alone.
@@j.m.w.5064 i like the idea that they are rebel built ships- from the ground up that is why they are so bare bones. They are just a reactor core, life support suit, shields, bridge and weapons and not much else. Built to transport rebel fighters on the central spar and transport them to different parts of the galaxy.
if the rebels built them that explains why we see them so much in rebel fleets.
This looks perfect. Like an unstripped y-wing.
This will make a fine addition to my headcannon.
This is my favorite Star Wars video on RUclips. The Nebulon B never made sense as it was, and this fan design fixes it.
I really really hope someone at ILM sees this. I always thought the Nebulon B looked stripped down and your design fits so perfectly it's stunning 10/10
First thing, the model looks amazing. Second, this actually makes a lot of sense as it leaves distinct sections of pressurised space and then thick armor plates over the top which simultaneously explains the angled look of the imperial ships, and adds a nice bit of lore
Lucasfilm should hire this man, his ships look amazing and fit in star wars
Henry, this is easily the best design history of the Nebulon-B Frigate I've ever seen or heard about. My hats off to you.!
I am so impressed not only with the design but the concept and backstory you've envisioned as well. Brilliant. The lighting on those renders is beautiful also.

This is gorgeous work! It rivals fractal sponge!
Also, I really like the design similarities to the newly announced Starhawk class. I wonder if the specs from your "original" non-stripped Nebulon - B influenced the Starhawk design...?
Ive always thought the Nebulon-B looked stripped down, and this is better than I possibly could have imagined. Great work!
What are the chances, Me and a friend was planning out a fan trilogy and we decided to have a large fleet battle with Neb B's on the imperial side and literally not 2 days ago decided to design an imperial version and the results was surprisingly close to your design. Great work 🤙

can you make a cutaway showing the hangar from the outside?
EC, this is what people want to see in a Star Wars - all this tech, all this structure in a large ship battle!

Can you modernise (and reajust flaws) of The Old Republic era Capital ships and fighters ? Thank you for all of your amazing work !
That's not necessary for the Harrower. The Harrower class already has a perfect space frame.
Republic ships, not siths ships (y es, the harrower class are elegant and well designed.).
Yes, this is totally my headcanon! The Imperial Nebulon-B was decommissioned, stripped down then sold off. The rebels acquired the ship, because it still had military grade components on it.
This reimagined design makes so much sense, pity its not official.
This makes so much sense. Just like the Y-Wing, stripping off armor and other unnecessary sections allows for easier maintenence, cheaper fuel cost, and a lighter ship for faster getaways. Stripping down already existing ships to make them easier to maintain and faster to accelerate is a very common thing in the Rebel Alliance so this design works perfectly. This is in my head canon now lol.
in legends imperial nebulons escorted convoys and were very good a destroying snub fighters
@EC_Henry Yes, this is my 1 issue with this presentation, that it is established legends lore that the Empire did deploy many NebulonBs - granted, not until 15-20 years after the formation of the Galactic Empire. As such, it would make sense that even if they were not initially deployed, but become the standard once raiding increased and the shortcomings of the command-class and gozanti-class flotillas were past obvious to the point of embarrassment. In fact, the deployment of the NebulonB could be what forced the Rebellion to focus more on fleet actions, as raiding was becoming prohibitively costly in terms of pilots and fighters. In terms of the model itself... and its back story, its pretty much perfect. 9/10!
Headcanon wise, it's also extremely possible the complicated docking facilities faced cost-overruns and development problems, similar to the EMALS system on the Ford-class aircraft carriers.
This will be in my armies fleet since it’s awesome
This is exactly what I thought a Nebulan B imperial would be. Great Job!!!
I’ve always liked the Nebulon-B and I LOVE your vision here!
Have you ever considered recording your 3d modelling process? I'm sure it would be pretty interesting to see.
Another impressive video and excellent design. As a casual fan, it was always my understanding that these frigates were modular with components being swapped out. As far as I knew, several of the pods in the nose could be swapped out to carry fighters and maintenance for them.
That is a DAMN good looking ship, i never liked the Nebulon B but looking at it as a stripped down version makes a good deal more sense. Your rendering breaths a new light into it, i just love the forward blade, it reminds me of one of my favorite EVE online hulls, the Maller which can be seen here. wiki.eveuniversity.org/Maller
This is your best model to date and that's an incredible achievement!
Dave Filoni: I'll take that render, idea and lore and pay you nothing for it. Thanks
Your design of the Imperial Nebulon-B is amazing!
This ship is my headcanon now. Just like the Y-Wing is an older stripped down version of what it was in its prime, this just works so well. Excellent work and as far as I'm concerned this is canon.
been watching your vids for a year now, waited with subscribing to see if you consistently push out quality content
you have proven yourself and earned a subscription
This has given me a lot of ideas for a future Star Wars campaign.
I quite like the Fanon you have on your Nebulon. I always thought that having that thin midsection was completely different from all other Imperial designs, and the explanation your fanon gives is believable and something I could see the Empire doing.
Really interesting, it never occurred to me that this class was stripped down at all. The final look is very cool.
I've always loved the Nebulon-B, but you've managed to make this a really sexy ship! I wanna see this design in the canon, that would be a sight to see.
Excellent work, Henry. Your 3D models always look good, but this one really impressed me.
Man this video is amazing! I always liked the ship and to see it all edged out to fit the imperial ship look was really cool. Keep it up man.
The rebel version definitely has some of those Mon Cal ship traits in the front sections mixed in with some imperial-style angles... I'd imagine that the ones they stole were just barely-functional frames with engines that required basically half the ship to be built new around the old frame, but were still better than just a full build from scratch since the engines were still there.
Your lore is better than accepted canon.
I wish I had you as a resource this 25yrs ago when I was running & playing WEG Star Wars!
i love how the front is still partly open thus still allowing one to swap out those front pods. that's actually really cool.
Why don't you work for ILM?
You could bring new life into the SW films instead of them just building bigger star destroyers.
No. The higher ups would kill any innovative ideas EC Henry had.
Just saying. That's why the dislike. Bad idea.

Man im addicted on your designs... Give me more! I need it, please...
Congratulations you've managed to turn the plucky Frigate of the Rebellion into a realistically formidable imperial warship that would have been a sight to see in Star Wars battles. Also you managed to pretty much give the Nebulon the equivalent of the finger to its original imperial owners for neglecting it :P
This is the greatest design you produced so far. I love it. This is my new headcanon for the Nebulon B. Everything fits perfectly.
So... what you're suggesting is that what the rebels did to the Nebulon-B is similar to what they did to the Y-wing: rescue it from a junkyard and strip it down! ^_^ Nonetheless, I loved the video and your lore around it. Keep up the amazing work!
Those... Those are some Sexy lines. The Tie-style solar panels where the Nebulon's wings are just add to that beauty, plus, give the impression they complement the generators or power generation.

Very late to the party, but wow! This was simply amazing!
