BATMAN WAS A MISTAKE - Unpacking The Madness Of Bruce Wayne's "Batman" Psychosis

  • A deep dive into the lore of the #KryptonianEpic's own Dark Knight and Gotham City, exploring and unpacking the origins of the broken man who would become a well-meaning monster.
    ---
Most of the Batman villains referenced only appear as cameos or in small roles; a good example is Harvey Dent, who is talked about constantly but never actually seen in the epic other than photos Jimmy takes of him and an extremely brief moment in Superman: The Starlight Emperor.
    ---
Batman exists for three full years before Clark becomes Superman, and then another two before Agent Of Batman. So there was plenty of Batman hijinks that went on "off camera" so to speak; I run over all the truly important stuff here, revisiting, filling out and tying together elements from Superman: American Alien, Superman: Agent Of Batman, Batman: Deathwish, and finally Superman: For All Mankind, as well as several short Batman one-pagers.

I mean getting punch by Batman hurts but so does getting shot with arrows by someone who rich , in shape Kung Fu version of Bernie Sanders. I mean sometimes he tears arrows out of people and shoot them in other. That how you get an infection people. Congrat you just gave a poor mugger a horrible disease. And the whole Batman kills people because if they get arrested they will be killed for failing a Job. Same can be said if you got arrested by other superheros. I Think that just the villains faught for bad worker motivation. People going to stop working for you if you murder them over every little F up. Try POSTIVE reinforcement Ming the Mercherless. And you wouldnt be surrounded by incompetent pions that don't even have a drop of your GENIUS!!
And lot of superheros have bad guys inspire by them. Hell most of the mcu villans were created by Tony Stark. Superman in this world just happen to not have meta humans that could fight him and tear up the city

I've always assumed he wasn't some desperate impoverished criminal driven mad by the tragedies of his life, but rather an upper middle-class suburban kid with too much time on his hands who read too much nihilistic/relativistic philosophy and grew up to be an attention seeking pseudo-intellectual performance artist trying too hard to be edgy.

Interesting. you repeat here a lot of things you said on previous videos, but it's nice to have it gathered in a single easy to understand video.
Not my favourite interpertation of Batman, but I can see how this works for your version of Superman, seeing how your entire epic is focused on the ideas of mental stability, mental illness, and the idea of contol (both controling others and self control).
I like how your version of Batman mirrors your version of Lex. Same in so many different ways, but also the complete opposite. I wonder which one of them is more sane.
I wonder how Vandal Savage (and what seemd to be hints hot Brainiac and Doomsday) fits into this entire theme, but I guess We'll see in a later date.
Anyway, more importantly: When are the produced version comming out? Seeing you talk is great, you are a great storyteller, but like the old saying go: Show, don't tell. I want to see the actual story play out :)

Yeah, the whole concept of a superhero who doesn't kill is absurd. They're all too physically powerful and well equipped to be able to guarantee that the force they use isn't lethal (if not instantly then certainly within days, weeks, or months of an attack). Additionally, the situations in which they find themselves are almost always too hectic and requiring split second reactions and decisions. There's just no way someone like Batman or Spiderman could always (or even usually) avoid killing people.

One interesting point about costumed vigilantes is that since most do not kill the criminals, they end up back on the streets. Why? Because the vigilantes are not police officers. They can't testify or provide evidence, and if the police work with them, then the entire case will be thrown out because the defense team would not be able to call on Batman or Spider-Man as a witness.
Unless the criminal has an outstanding warrant, there is no way to prosecute them on whatever crimes the superhero catches them committing. Even if there is some evidence, the Joker's defense team could claim that "Batman made him do it." The Joker could say that he was being held hostage by this maniac in a demonic costume who threatens him with torture or death if he doesn't go along with the Bat's staged power fantasies.
Now, what Batman needs is his own prison where he can keep these criminals held indefinitely. That's really what Arkham Asylum should be. Unlike prison, the rules toward criminal insanity allow much greater manipulation and with his money, Bruce can influence the laws and regulations so he essentially controls the Asylum and the psychiatric evaluations of all the major criminals in the city.

I don't mind it for Max's storyline, but I'm getting bored of the idea that Batman unequivocally has to be violent and deranged in order to stop rapists and thieves from killin people. Max talks about how easy it is to rewrite Pepe LePew to be non-problematic, but still insists that Batman universally has to be a bone breaker sadist, instead of a guy that ties people up so thr police can get them. He's fighting criminals as a mortal person. We might as well pretend that SpiderMan is scary and bloodthirsty nopunintendo

He is universally presented as an extra-legal vigilante who attacks private citizens on the merit of his own investigations.
Spider-Man responds to emergencies. You could argue that he's scary and sadistic, and I did in my novel The Shocker: Legit. But it's the perspective of those who got themselves into it.
For Batman to show up, in every incarnation across canon including this story, all you need to know is a guy whose parents were murdered is now going to hurt you. What happens to you after that is your problem.
You can't get insured against vigilante justice. An injury, even a "minor one," could be a lifetime of debt for a criminal who would've gotten six months if they'd been arrested by normal cops.
It's so weird to think about because we love Batman and we've normalized him. But it's a fucked up idea and he's a pretty bad dude.

@@Uptomyknees All I mean is: change his actions. You suggested this morning that Pepe doesn't have to grab or kiss, and can still be a hopeless romantic. Batman doesn't gotta break fingers or anything. You can format him to only show up to emergencies too. Not that I mean for you to do this in THIS story. I still love your creativity and world building here and organic nature to the story. But it seems like "hollywood" or whatever is caught in a tailspin of trying to one up itself in terms of how Batman people can be disturbing and brutal. It's ok for Joker to just be an expensive art vandal or a bank robber. Catwoman can be a hacker instead of a dominatrix or whatever the desired evolution is. Batman doesn't have to be a story of trauma, but of a life after trauma. A life of compassion. Going from jaded rich kid to, someone who understands the pain of the streets and is helping stop other people from having that happen. He can be Black, Jewish, Asian, Irish, Latino, British, Portlandian, Greek, Moorish, Finnish, anything. Anyways, love your stuff. It's very inspiring. That sounds sarcastic but it it's not lol

@@Uptomyknees Adam West's Batman was "A fully deputized officer of the law." which is explicitly not an extra-legal vigilante.
I really like your take as far as this story goes but generally speaking (especially before DKR) Bruce Wayne is shown to be a fairly well adjusted person who found himself as he travelled the world after his parents death. Which leaves the question of if he has dealt with his grief why is he still being Batman?
... Well because the book is called Batman. I know it isn't a very satisfying answer but the "If he's Batman something is wrong with him take" can be applied to almost any hero especially those with dead loved ones.
Spider-man never dealt with the grief of uncle Ben dying, Daredevil never dealt with losing his father, Captain America can't let go of his glory days, Green Arrow is compartmentalizing his trauma from the island.
All that said I think your take fits really well in the world you've created and while there is definite merit to looking at Batman as a psychologically broken character to say "it's a fucked up idea..." is to say that superheroes, as we understand them, are a fucked up idea.

@@Uptomyknees Not to get weirdly meta but batman exists in the world he's placed in. The character has been culturally relegated to forever walk this tightrope of being a superhero but also being "dark". The character started out with a gun if I remember correctly but then he was slowly pushed to standard superhero fanfare. Then he went from being the world's greatest detective to nigh omnipotent man-God who can theoretically defeat the entire justice league and yet still struggles with the joker. He exists in one of the worst cities on earth and somehow metropolis is one of the best? Joker went from a serial killer with a clown theme to a crime lord with a clown theme to whatever you call the basically immortal super genius face-cutter we ended up with.
Batman went from superhero motivated by personal loss to brooding edgelord who "beats people up" but he doesn't have to be that and he hasn't always been .These characters ended up like this because of this ridiculous idea that batman has to be darker and edgier than anyone else. Even Frank Miller said that his version of the character (even though people started to say it was) wasn't the definitive version of batman.
As far as the motivation aspect, it seems the idea is batman as indulgence rather than obligation. Does he have to scare people? Maybe not but isnt the idea of superheroes that they fight crime to both help people and stop criminals? Does iron man do it to do the right thing or is it out of guilt? What about flash or daredevil? I'd make that argument for someone like moon knight whose loose sanity is a core aspect of his character or punisher whose response to his loss is intentionally extreme but batman doesn't have to be lumped in with that.

Tbh one of the reasons why I despise main continuity(mainly due to its practice) is because characters like Bruce Wayne will never be allowed to retire or die, or go through any kind of growth past the Batman. I think that artists unique interpretations of these characters should always be entertained, but in terms of the DC universe in comics it seems to have reached this bizarre "limbo" state. I use the term limbo because these characters are effectively frozen. This in turn is why your Bruce Wayne is so interesting to me. It feels so bold and new, despite the fact that all of these pieces more or less were already present.

“I always hated the speeches when I was in school, the preaching in auditoriums, the one-note message. Stuff like saying drugs are bad. It’s wrong. Drugs are fantastic.
People wouldn’t do them if they weren’t. They make you feel good, make your day brighter, give you energy--until they don’t. People hear the message that drugs are bad, that they’ll ruin your life if you do them once. And then you find out that isn’t exactly true because your friends did it and turned out okay, or you wind up trying something and you’re fine. So you try them, try them again. It isn’t a mind-shattering moment of horrible when you try that first drug. Or so I hear. It’s subtle, it creeps up on you, and you never really get a good, convincing reason to stop before it ruins your life beyond comprehension. I never went down that road, but I knew a fair number of people who did. "
