Why Max Landis Won't Review

  • Hard to criticize an objectively bizarre piece of art that is designed by someone who loves it for people who would love it. It's like reviewing cilantro; you're either going to love it or gag and spit it out. I stand by pretty much every opinion on movies I've ever expressed...But the tone and volume of those opinions ultimately got in the way of me as a person and an artist.
I will probably never watch The Snyder Cut, not out of hatred, but because it features versions of characters I'm not interested in, a villain I don't care about, and is ultimately just a longer, cleaner, truer version of a movie I paid for already and didn't like at all.
What matters is that it happened, and people love it.

Jesus, were you all really expecting me to shit openly on another artist whose work I usually don't like, when what he really was doing was literally his own version of the Kryptonian Epic?
If you've been paying close attention, nothing I say in this will be a surprise. Like everything involving the #kryptonianepic, this, like all the other stories, perhaps isn't what you'd expect from your canon experience of a fictional character you enjoy. But hopefully you'll still like it.

The funny thing is that people feel that they have to watch this movies just to have an opinion about it. Here is my take: I didn't like the previous movies, so I don't feel like I want to watch this one. I don't know if it's good or bad, nor do I care. I'm a grown ass man who can choose not to watch movies I don't have high expectations for.
As for Snyder? I'm happy for him that he got to make a movie he feels good about, I really am, but it's obvious to me that we have very different tastes in movies, and that's ok.

Any 'blame' should fall on the studio execs, that I'm sure knew exactly what Synder had envisioned/planned and signed off on those movies.
Also was interesting to hear your thoughts about your older remarks, and I can certainly see where you're coming from as someone that's also putting their work out there. It is a bit sad though, that at least online, the idea of nuance seems completely dead. On the periphery of all this fan fiction, Kryptonian-Epic stuff are the subtle truth I.E.D.s that you somehow jam into the soil... gradually detonating them in-between explanations and project elucidations... and what’s unearthed is something unexpected, and irreverent, the remnants and relics from your former life, one that is both genuine to you, yet imagined to much of your audience... the fictive, public persona, that vacillates somewhere between “Lax Mandis” to “John Landis’s kid” to “Max Landis, screenwriter/RUclipsr” to "Enfant terrible Head of the Colour Society" doing Nerf Battles in Griffith Park, head wrangler on the Eastside, ... you’re giving us more and more glimpses of the unhedged truth... I feel more than ever there’s a Jerry Stahl-style, PERMANENT MIDNIGHT lurking you that perhaps one of these days down the road, you’ll take the time to write, just plunk yourself down at Slurpin' Ramen like you used to and bang it out... no more masks, no more costumes, or comic book characters... just you and your Alien and the abyss... and I’ll be first in line for it.

    Oh hell yeah!
I'm so happy that this video is what it is. I'm madly tired of the negativity that spawns from lots of the internet, and as I got older I realized that yeah, reviews that tear apart movies or stories in general can be really entertaining if done well, but I will never have the same level of emotional connection with that, as I do with the ones where people are genually happy, genuinely passionate and incredibly in love with what they're talking about. I think we can all agree that seeing people talking about their passions is one of the best things ever. My mom once made me noticed that while I was talking about Spider-Man (wich is probably the biggest obsession of my life), and since then I've been craving for the wonderful sight of people talking about what they love, getting excited for stories and characters and what they admire about those. I don't care about the "hot take" of the week, but I sure care if you tell me why THAT movie/comic/TV show/character/piece of art in general, in some way makes you feel warm, happy, comprehended, like it was ment to make you feel not alone and safe, cuz it seems made for you specifically, and makes you obviously excited as fuck. Of course talking about the negatives is important and we should not let negative criticism die, because we can learn a lot from that, but hell if it seems like it's been a while since things were balanced. It feels like a big chunk of the internet became the Comic-Book Guy from the Simpsons, to the point where you see him and go like: "Do you even like this stuff? Cuz you spend all the time talking about what you hate and really none talking about what you loved". That's also why I'm a fan of lots of the "Video Essayists" that spawned in recent years, cuz lots of them seem more imprinted in talking about "Why I think that this thing is wonderful" instead of "Fuck this thing, all the people who worked on this are incompetent!".
I'm really happy that you're spreading positivity, not only cuz it makes the world around you change (little bit of a big statement there but you know what I mean), but also because it means you're doing better and better. Well done!
Oh, and fun fact since you mentioned it: I found the pitch for "The Death and Return of Superman" so great, that I memorized it and translated the whole thing, so that I could tell it to my dad, who's a big superhero fan himself, in our language (wich is Italian).

I mean, I don't disagree per say, things have gotten too negative, and people are definitely mining peoples dislikes for clicks. The News and mainstream sites have been doing clickbait for years.
However for some, maybe most, going to a video of a content creator you enjoy/someone who is as passionate about the property as you are is a way to digest and quantify their emotions following the movie. Not everyone has a group of friends to talk movies with. To discuss pros and cons. You can critique without being overtly negative.
I know when I came out of TFA my gut reaction was that I hated the movie, but I couldn't tell why. Most places online prescribed to the notion that if you didn't like it it was because Rey was a woman and/or Finn was black. Now I knew that's not why I didn't like it but with no real grasp on why, you feel betrayed and isolated by your own feeling.
Enter Max Landis and the explanation of the Mary Sue. All of a sudden my reaction to the movie snaps into place. I can more easily identify why I didn't like it, what my tastes are. I'm more equipped to express myself and my understanding of the world. Through passionate and honest discussion I'm able to rationalize my emotions and come to a better understanding not only of the art itself but of myself. I think that's important.
Discussion about Art is almost as important as the art itself. Why hold a mirror up if you're not gonna get anyone else's opinions? You're going to stare at yourself and pretend everything is perfect? That's just narcissism. Other people's opinions can hurt, but they're important. We don't live on a desert island.
And if that's all too pretentious then at the very least it's a fun way to have "water cooler" conversations about things you like with passionate people in the digital age.

Sooo..it seems as though Max has gone through his own character arcs, trials and tribulations. We see our hero, with the potential of great power at his beginning, go through an array of emotions and experiences that bring him down, only to find new resolve, pick himself back up, and bring hope to the community once again. Supermax. Maxman. MaxaSupe. One of those.

Oh man Max. I would love to sit and have an actual conversation with you. Your opinions seem to match my own. But holy shit, I had never realized that about Lex Luthor in BvS. To be honest, I loved Jesse as Lex, and if he used you as inspiration, that’s amazing. Something tells me a real world Lex Luthor would be the way he portrayed him. About Justice League, you may have really enjoyed it if you haven’t watched it yet. The score does make a huge difference here. But it’s still basically the same movie, storywise. The thing is, Zack made it way more character driven, and epic. So that is why you may have really enjoyed it.

you should know that the death and return of superman pitch has been my favorite video since the day it came out. since its release, ive watched it yearly, if not throughout each year
you should, as well, know that im expecting the final and ultimate kryptonian epic video to surpass it as my new favorite piece of recorded media. if it doesnt, i WILL find you and i WILL... congratulate you on creating a nonetheless spectacular and beautiful piece of art and for the progress youve made as a person throughout the years

so I finally got around to watching it
Ive been obssesed with the JL movie and the entire DC movie universe for a while
what an absolutly facinating journy this movie went through, if I had an aunce of filmmaking capital and enough time id make an honest documantory covering every turn.
and im so glad with how it ended here, the film genuinly feels like snyder just went "im gonna adapt a full comic event that isnt written"
the look, the plot lines, the giant cast. took me a while to get going but when I get used to its rythm it was so smooth.

Right? Like I don't care for his DC universe at all, but I want him to make it. Even if it's not for me, clearly other people enjoy it. And I'll support an artist trying to put his vision out there every day over corporate studios trying to be as bland as possible.

Not trying to start a negative argument but I'm really curious.
For me the Watchmen movie is a deformation of most of what the comic is trying to say, specially the Dr Manhattan being the responsable for the thing at the end.
Do you enjoy it as a separate piece or a good adaptation?

Even with the score, American Ultra is a kick-ass movie, and I show it to people all the time as one of my favorites because of its heart, and tone that it puts out there. (yeah that's what I decided to comment on more than the actual point of the video which was very well articulated and great as well)

Hey Max, back in 2013 when you first posted your Regarding Clark video here I commented on it asking to have a deeper conversation about Man of Steel and you obliged and asked me to hit you up on Facebook. It meant a lot to me at the time as an aspiring filmmaker in film school to get to talk to you, I looooove Chronicle.
We had a great, deep, respectful convo about our differences of opinions on Snyders vision in MoS and while we still disagreed heavily in the end, 7 years later its a conversation that has always stuck with me as the kind of discourse surrounding these movies that I wish had been more the atmosphere surrounding these and Zack Snyder.
It means a lot to me to see you post this. Ive grown a lot as a person since that conversation and it looks like you have too and we both got to see this vision through. Thats a win for both us.
Anyways, lets have a follow up! Thanks Max.

Probably for the best this was a video focusing on Max instead of the movie.
There's a point in one of your old videos where you're incredulous at some archetype of guy and you go "wha- who trained you? where did you learn to be like this?" I know there's a whole cohort of other people like me who were growing up with your come up and learned a lot while all embattlement due to your opinions was going on behind the scenes. At any rate, I'm glad to still be here.

it's great to see you using your powers for good, max! :)

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo 3 года назад +2

wow, max. so i knew you had been accused of being an abusive boyfriend, but i never looked into specifics because i had seen posts of yours openly admitting that yes, you had in fact been abusive, and that you'd been going through a lot of therapy to try to be better, and you'd reached out to make amends to those you hurt, and you're now donating your time gratis to help folks hone their writing craft to tell their own stories. and i thought all of that was great. and even this video i thought was great because it showed a tangible example of real growth from your younger "shit all over everything because it's cool" days, and how this is likely emblematic in a small way of your growth. hence my "powers for good" post.
so maybe i just didn't want to look any deeper because i thought "yes, he's made mistakes but he's owned up to it, and he's trying to make it better and isn't that good enough?", and to be honest, i really just wanted to continue enjoying your creativity and your new found positivity.
but i can't. a friend of mine just showed me the depth of the abuse you're accused of, and, yeah, i didn't know how far it went (maybe selfishly i just chose not to know). and its too far for me to ignore, so i'll have to get off the train now. i know you don't want to do it, but i think it would be great if you could more directly own up to the hurt you've caused. i think you have it in you to do it. it's great that you can talk openly about your "asshole online bullying persona" in this video and own it and directly demonstrate growth, but it's so much more important that you do the same on your other, much darker former acts.
i hope you'll be able to to lead by example at some point because i do think you're in a better headspace now, and you're in a position where you can lead by example by owning and atoning for the hurt you've caused.

This is all something I learned in my late 20s and early 30s. Shitting on other people's work is pointless. If you don't like something, it's fine to criticize, but to be a dick about it, just... why? I try not to use language that puts stuff down like, "Oh, that band sucks" or "that movie was garbage." It's way less stressful to be positive and there's room for everyone's art. So if you see something you don't like, just move on. It's that easy. Hopefully the attitude catches on.

Yeah, a lot of film/series reviews are "hot-take" centric these days...and a large part of the blame can be attributed to RUclips. Once people determined "engagement" meant likes AND dislikes...all hell broke loose. Now people just chase engagement and kick the hornets nest for fun. It would be nice to see a bit of positivity and more nuance now and again.
