Well before the release of Endwalker, Asmongold had his interview with Yoshi P. One of his first questions was "Is FF14 considering doing significantly harder small group content?" You should look up that interview. Yoshi P paused, sort of smiled, and said he couldn't really address that question in detail....but players should pay attention to future Live Letters, and that it was a concept that they were definitely exploring. It seems clear now, that they were already working on this new dungeon concept back then and it must have been pretty far along. I think he mentioned that they were playing around with much harder single player events as well (which might be in our future).

100%. Yoshi P is no stranger to market research and seeing what their competitor is doing at the time, and since the massive influx of western players in Shadowbringers, I have no doubt they've been trying to recreate M+ a la Final Fantasy in a way that will work for this playerbase. Yeah the Squadrons still exist but they definitely evolved into smarter NPCs in the Nadaam for example and then into Trusts.
Likewise with the Diadem which evolved into Eureka, with Bozja being tweaking on Eureka. These are "exploration" content.
The Diadem zone itself, as to not waste a beautiful zone, got turned into a gathering zone for Ishgard Restoration... which is kind of like expanded Ocean Fishing to all 3 gatherers. Island Sanctuary is something new but with some similar vibes even.
I am now once again mad that WoW's Warfronts and Islands were abandoned rather than iterated upon. Legitimately the most fun things to do during BFA.
I quit before Choreghast but without the chore aspect, I'd imagine the content concept was actually pretty good and could've been very fun, if not abandoned...

What I really like about about it tho is that it's still intact in the game. So, early on you can level new classes with it (and see outdated abilities that your squadron members use that aren't available to you when you play the current version of those classes now), then move right on to Duty Support and then eventually Trusts... the way the Devs feed one system into an updated version of it without scrapping what was already there is really cool to me. I think the devs' ability to stitch together a bunch of systems and keep them working with the larger whole of the game shows they really learned a lot from their mistakes in 1.0

    • @belld.s5276
      @belld.s5276 2 года назад

This is true in some aspects, but there is a level of customization that Squadrons have that duty support does not have (yet). So I'm almost hoping they integrate both systems. In Squadrons you can customize the NPCs glamour and specialty (the latter more of an illusion, everyone should be using Attack buff lol).
I don't think they will integrate the systems anytime soon, and I don't want them to spend resources on it frankly, but I suspect in the far future - this topic will come up again. When they decide to make this game support single player completely, this will come up again.

There is something to be said about squadrons though. While I would say it is abandoned, and rightfully so, it did set up a model for what eventually became duty support. Because you can do a select few dungeons with Squadrons and they are extremely powerful if you invest in them. Thats actually how I level my dps classes from 20-50. Is it a grind, hell yes, but it is fast and efficient way of leveling and a safe place to practice a class you are not comfortable with.
I've ran over like 400 missions with them so I am a bit biased xD. I loved the idea of squadrons, just sad it never got improved upon.

    • @rabbitknight
      @rabbitknight 2 года назад +4

I think the problem lies within that you need to invest in squadrons first before they become powerful enough to feel satisfactory. Most people just don't want to level up another thing for the sake of leveling up their character.

I also spent an absurd amount of time investing into my Squadrons. Had a fully maxed team of Roegadyns and had all the different attack and defense orders unlocked on every single character. @Aquilenne 2 года назад +1

@@TheSattocs Yeah, I'm a huge squadron fan too. Once they're built they make the 1-60 levelling really efficient. Even with instant queues they're generally faster than random parties, and at least competitive with optimised ones (World Record synced Sohm Al as a solo player (Squadron or Automatchmaking) is a squadron run at 10:34, while the world record for a premade party of people all heavily optimising for the fastest time is only 30 seconds faster at 10:04).

I make (made) heavy use of my squad, too, especially when level dps jobs. There are parts of the system I prefer over Duty Support, such as being able to select their races, jobs, glams. But OMG are they dumb as dirt about aggro. I'm grateful they evolved into the trust. The jury is still out for me on Duty Support as I haven't made much use of it so far, but I'm assuming it's scripted similar to the trust.

I see why they didn't improve upon it, but damn I can't shake the feeling that there's wasted potential.

Even with the smaller raid sizes in FF14, I still struggle to get a solid consistent raid group, because I have a core 3-5 people who are always around to play and then we have to fill in the gaps. So a savage dungeon for 4 people will be perfect, and I hope the community enjoys it so they put more dev time into this idea. I actually think that going the pure M+ route would be a mistake in FF14, and I think focusing on static savage level dungeons, and stuff like the deep dungeons is a better avenue for harder small scale content. As someone with more raid experience in WoW than 14, when it comes to having a proper group with you, I'd definitely put Extremes up at AotC boss and low Mythic, maybe a few of the uncommonly overtuned Heroic fights. It does vary wildly from fight to fight in Extreme.
Savage is Mythic level, even high Mythic. You can't just compare raw time because WoW has so much more downtime in between pulls. Ultimates taking 600-700 pulls is only matched by outright broken Mythic fights. Mythic Zovaal was like 300ish pulls. I think even Mythic KJ which had to be hotfix nerfed repeatedly, was like 500-600 pulls I think even including all the wasted pulls on an "impossible" version.
All of this must assume a proper guild group with some effort. Because if it's pugs, Pug Normal is harder than half of Mythic. Week 1 LFR for fights like MOTHER in Uldir were harder my AotC Uldir reclears. And the same will be true for gambling in PF in 14.

@13:55 WoW doesn't offer challenging Party content either though. Arbitrary time trials are artificial difficulty. "Hey we bloat HP and Damage until Time becomes an issue and sometimes mechanics just break entirely!"
Compared to a raid boss where sure enrages exist but strictly as a dps check, are you performing adequately... but the key thing is the boss will usually just flipping kill you as the primary check. The challenge is whether or not you do it right AT ALL, not how fast you do something that is elsewise 100% trivial.
That's why I don't respect M+. It's trash. I respected MOP and WOD Challenge Modes, where racing for time was a secondary concern and the primary challenge was that the dungeon would murderize you outright. But even in WOD, they started trying to make it into a #ESports #BigPlay #PogChamp #Hashtag! Because that's how NA game devs are and the quality of their games suffers as a result.
Because you know what's entertaining? Stupid crap and shenanigans.
You know what's not entertaining? Measured skillful gameplay.

You're not wrong, but it seems you're speaking from ignorance.
M+ difficulty comes from at the fact that at a certain point, not interrupting a spell cast will likely 1-shot a DPS or your healer, or aggroing a patrol and not controlling them properly does the same thing. Just because it looks like a steamroll when you watch the top teams does NOT mean that's what it actually is.
You do mention challenge modes, so maybe you're not ignorant now that I think of it, but doing things right is harder when there's a timer. I hated the timer myself up until shadowlands, but once I got into it with 2 other people from IRL it became a fun challenge.
I just think it's silly for you to say WoW doesn't offer challenging party content. Have you even seen the new M+ dungeon pool? Have you seen people run them, or run them your self? I'm 99% sure you have not. To be fair, I have not run them, but seeing others run them at the level they're accustom to looks quite difficult. Anything well-practiced can look easy, which is why I accused you of ignorance at the start of my post.
Either way, if you want to actually measure difficulty, you need to know the particulars instead of putting it all into one box called "Mythic +." Why? Because otherwise you're breathing hot air and nothing else. You also need to compare them relativistically; FF14 light party content vs M+ is not even in the same ballpark. doesn't matter what they have done marketing-wise...it's about the effort required to succeed.
"Because you know what's entertaining? Stupid crap and shenanigans.
You know what's not entertaining? Measured skillful gameplay."
Not to keep going on about it, but this in itself makes me realize again that you've never pushed WoW 5man content to any meaningful degree.

@@3lit3gn0m3 For transparency I was a roughly top 5% Mythic raider, not quite enough for Cutting Edge usually, but typically every other boss downed.
And M+ is garbage. You can rightly whine "Well it is harder on a timer than not on a timer" but a run timer is not mechanical difficulty. Yes, dps/gear checks are a thing to an extent and exist as time limits, but solely so that raids cannot stack 4 tanks and 12 healers to trivialize the encounter design.
I don't care that M+ just "Make bigger number til number arbitrary one-shot" and "Make timer shorter til group fail". It's garbage artificial difficulty. I assume we both played Legion, so we both did Blackrook Hold(?) the undead elf dungeon with the dreadlord at the end.
Take the first boss for example, Raven Marrowgar or whatever it was called. Later for my relic skin tone farming on some alt I went in there and unfortunately at 10+ or whatever, its roomwide AOE was an unavoidable one-shot due to the raw damage modifier and maybe Tyrannical.
There was no skill, there was no counterplay, I had no invuln on the class. I think I was Shaman and just had to res through it.
The mechanic isn't supposed to BE an undodgeable one-shot though. That's not how the fight is designed. If you handle the add phase properly, it's just supposed to hurt a lot.
But because Activision is a bunch of LAZY garbage hacks who can't design real difficulty and can't even try to beat their own encounters, it was just yet another random broken piece of crap in a game full of random broken trash.
Your rant tells me you're a M+ Hero who needs to stroke your own ego because you never progged real content, and you think checking raider.io to make your lazy meta team of AOE stun and AOE burst somehow makes good players. It doesn't. It's just lazy meta stacking, which is what almost all of M+ was.
And, to be fair, it's what RWF level competitive raiding is too. Unfortunately, in my small guild, I was one of the few people who put effort into alts to flex for fights.
I don't respect fake challenge. I don't respect just making numbers bigger or timers shorter until failure is assured. That doesn't challenge people to play better, it challenges people to CHEESE harder.
And the meta becomes naught but AOE Stuns, Invuln and Invis cheesing.
You do high M+ after all, are you gonna tell me the meta isn't maximizing cheese?

@@Navi_xoo "Having to focus interrupt something is more of something people learn that you have to use addons / keybinds to reliably do. After wiping the dungeon once or twice you kind of just know what to interrupt, wow so crazy! Like yeah it one shots you if you don't kill them fast enough / interrupt... I wouldn't really say that's a high skill thing just something you have to die to see."
You just explained any mechanic ever. The difficult arises when things don't go as planned during pulling.
"Healing and Routing are challenging in M+ but again you're talking about pushing pointlessly past 20's unless you plan to go into the MDI. "
      I agree here, actually.
"If your idea of interesting content is repeating the same dungeon for 2 years with bloated hp / one shot mechanics then good for you. "
Nope. Running the same dungeons for 2 years is boring as hell...which is why they've changed it. The new M+ pool is almost completely different. You say "one shot mechanics" so vaguely, yet pretty much every game has them. If they exist and are preventable, that's the definition of 'difficult' in my books. Calling it 'bloated' doesn't change that, because as you've said, not everyone needs to do 20s+
"The affixes are also dogshit i mean they like practically removed 2 of them in shadowlands alone. Nobody enjoys the affixes besides the seasonal one if it isn't also shit."
Affixes are good and bad. I enjoyed them for S1 of SL, but I barely did S2 and beyond so clearly it wasn't good enough to stick around. I personally would prefer more affixes with randomization between each key, similar to PoE maps; the seasonal affix being the only mainstay.
Anyways, I don't agree with you on the big picture, but definitely think M+ has squandered potential.

@@jaeusa160 I was writing a proper response, but then I read: "Your rant tells me you're a M+ Hero who needs to stroke your own ego because you never progged real content,"
And realized you're a jaded asshole.
My favorite time in WoW was clearing sunwell in TBC. I am not a M+ hero and only seriously got into it in Shadowlands. Maybe if you read my post you'd have a clearer picture. You know, where I said: "I hated the timer myself up until shadowlands, but once I got into it with 2 other people from IRL it became a fun challenge. "
I don't do high M+. +15 was my endgame, because I wasn't competing. Legion M+ did have bullshit, and there's definitely poorly tuned encounters. That said, your one example isn't something I experienced in Shadowlands. I've watched top end players do +30s and it looks intense (at least for the healer, which I am as well.)
Yes, the meta is cheese, but EVERY game has a cheese meta...even mythic raiding; it may simply seem less apparent since you have more factors and players to work with.
"And the meta becomes naught but AOE Stuns, Invuln and Invis cheesing."
Shadowlands S1 meta was kiting. I haven't kept up with it switched to FF14 after S1, but from what I've observed it's not what you're describing; teams are actually using pull and boss strategies rather than finding ways to be invincible. I haven't seen a night elf shadowmeld M+ run since Legion.
Looks like my post was longer than I intended.

It took us almost 2 hours to do it without a guide. Most of us had farmed it unsynched, some had done it min ilvl before, but it's certainly a tough one. Bring good healers and tanks because there's a lot of damage to heal and the tanks can get killed even if the tanks are doing everything right, and a mobile DPS to adjust for others because there's some randomness to it.

I can definitely see why people would be a bit miffed about Island Sanctuaries not being player housing (I'm not for the record, I just wanna jump in and have fun), because when I look at what this could have been with player housing, it would've probably been the best individual housing implementation that we could get, assuming what you want isn't a neighborhood, but just a house. Everyone would get a house if they wanted one, without having to win a lottery against who knows how many other players and then regular housing districts would be an FC exclusive thing. But I'm just ready to jump in and see what this island is all about, definitely one of the most interesting features imo, alongside the criterion dungeon.
Also, regarding the Adventure Squadrons, seeing as they allowed you to do dungeons with them in patch 4.1, it's my belief that it served as a testing ground for implementing the Trust system. I definitely would like to see what else they could do with them tho.

I already knew the new stuff is coming from the last live letter so I only glossed over them this time as well. It's pretty dank though, how they are keeping on the track record of redoing old stuff to make it a modern era content: Solo duty Steps of faith with big set pieces and kino moments, 4 man king mog cuz it's such a stupid fight with 8 people, trusts for HW dungeons up until the Vault with actual 'scions' this time just like the first time Trust showed up in 14 ( SHB ) also therefore reworking some parts of the dungeons and the bosses. Yes WoW has more combat then FF14... but for some reason FF14 has so much stuff to do... from every expansion, which unlike in WoW is not just the gimmick of the XP and dropped in the next to never be done ever again. In FF14 the Roulettes,mm the story or the fact that stuff is just plain fun makes you do the older stuff. IK am pumped for the patch!

I am really interested to check out island sanctuaries bc god knows how much time I've sunk into Stardew valley... But what I'm really hype about is seeing the new trial and savage raids!

I've always loved you geeking out on this. I've wanted to get into it but there's so much to it I find it overwhelming. Also the daunting task of finding a comunity and all the resources gathering that I'm years behind on makes it hard to want to switch from WoW. Though I an looking forward to Wrath.

Yoshi P > Ion Hazzikostas. Can't stand how smug that little man Ion is. His ego makes it impossible for him to follow up on player feedback. He thinks he's better than all the WoW players and their opinions are irrelevant. So glad I didn't buy shadowlands! 🤣

My favorite part was where they saw an increase in subscribers and clearly put a lot of that money back into the game.

I'm most excited for the story. MSQ story first, raid story a close second, and all the other stories third.

said exactly what the issue with Mythic+ in WoW and why I get upset when people use it as an example. it _is_ a glorified speed run, its lazy design and removes all the flavor from the dungeons which completely ruins the experience. I didnt want that in XIV, though since their version of harder dungeons is its own separate thing is fine, they can continue making the regular dungeons and make new criterion dungeons for those who enjoy that sort of thing.
