You are NOT alone, Chris. Since the first time (of many) I saw it in theaters as a kid, nothing stirs my soul like this piece. Not Star Wars, not Indiana Jones. Not the haunting themes in Alien or the martial rush of its sequel. Not Hogwarts nor Narnia nor even Lord of the Rings. Not Halloween, Jurassic Park, or even the many anthems of Bond. THIS is the sound of my endless childhood.
How this soundtrack didn't win an Oscar is BEYOND me. Then again, John Williams was UNSTOPPABLE in the 70s, almost a monopoly of GREAT soundtrack music!

If there is any piece of music that makes you stand a little taller and puff out your chest and just smile better than this, I haven't heard it yet. Still the single best comic book character theme ever composed. I don't believe it will ever be beaten. And 4-year old me agrees.
@@4sakend1 don't get me wrong, Williams is my favorite film composer. Schindlers List is probably the best film score I've ever heard. However, Conti's Rocky and Karate Kid scores are the most uplifting sports movie scores.
Kevin Pauley I agree with you. I know I haven’t heard all of the other candidates in the running but from what I’ve heard in my life, this is the best.
He and Margot Kidder who played Lois Lane. Who would have ever thought how it would turn out for them. Seemingly on top of the world and then both their worlds came crashing down. My heart just broke for the both of. But they are in the hands of the real SUPERMAN, the Almighty now. I am sure they are flying all about the universe now.
I don't think Reeve was a Christian or a God fearing man, so I doubt that he's in heaven.....He was a loopy actor that was a HUMANIST.......Most of hollywood is going to hell...... To quote REEVE: Well, believe it or not, I think that, y'know, God is not an entity that you find when you go to church and pray to God almighty, you know, and I always remembered that going to church as a kid, you know, and they talk about the vengeance of His terrible swift sword and His army, I said, "well that's kind of a scary guy." But I think that -- while I don't believe in God, per se, I believe in spirituality. And I believe that spirituality actually is automatically within ourselves, but we have to learn how to access it, and what that is, is realizing there is a higher power; there is..........Then went on to say.....more than just us, there is an inner strength, there is something, y'know, that comes from -- I don't know where exactly it comes from, but it's -- it really is the best that humans can be and perhaps what it is -- perhaps really what it is love.... So he give zero credit to God/Jesus and just talks about some inner human strength, which he calls spirituality and love, but NEVER gives God the glory or Jesus the source of his salvation or beliefs............again----a HUMANIST is not going to heaven, and HOLLYWOOD is full of those types..... Jesus said that IF you deny me before men, that he will deny you before the Father.......
Back in the beginnings of VHS my dad bought Superman and we had blankets and popcorn and it was the start of many movie nights. He loved John Williams and other composers. Love you dad and miss you ❤
I have two very damaged knees, yet everyday I walk 2 miles with this song resounding in my mind and I think of Christopher Reeves courage, his heart and his indomitable spirit that carried him on even through impossible odds, he continued to be a "Super" "Man!" God speed Clark Kent! Christopher you will always epitomize what is best in all of us, "truth, justice, heart, hope, and the willingness to sacrifice all for the welfare of others! UP! UP! AND AWAY!
This theme will always sound to me like the true spirit of the Superman myth--nothing else comes close. And Christopher Reeve was the most believable, funny, romantic, dashing Superman of them all, so I'm delighted to hear this theme written for the movies he starred in!
I'm 49 now. saw this in December 1978...I was 11 years old. and yes...I believed a man could fly. and this is one of the greatest movies scores of all time
Brad Underwood Brad- your childhood intuition was true, we are very close to flying like Superman, it’s just a matter of time before we develop this technology to the point where it fits inside a skintight suit… Just look at how small we shrunk the computer since this movie was first released… Remember, if you can imagine it, dream it, that means it exists somewhere in some other reality we just haven’t discovered it yet!
And it may still be some of the finest, most believable wire-work ever. And, let's be honest, while Indiana Jones and Star Wars get all the love, THIS may be his finest music of all.
I saw this movie in 1978. Lines were wrapping around the PARK theater when I finally entered. My friend bought the popcorn and I had the raisinettes. The lights dimmed and I soon heard that theme. I was in total awe. My mind kept repeating the tag line: "You'll believe a man can fly". I was NOT disappointed. Exited the theater. Sun was shining. It was a VERY good day.
Wow! To see the movie in theaters, must have been a real treat! And to see a line that huge. The tag line, in the moment I would have felt like I could fly, I do all the time when I hear this.
And even to this day the film has shone. I really believed he was flying. None of the CGI that was in the modern version. CGI sucks sometimes and they believe we are fools and take it all in. Chris is and always will be Superman.
Elder Rondy You speak the truth! I was 14 when I saw this in the theater in 1978. Complete awe. What a time to be a kid, with the original Star Wars in 1977 and this in 1978.....John Williams at his pinnacle!!
This music would of made Man of Steel better but the movie was to dark. Superman symbolizes hope among other things. Not insecurity. The movie was crippled before it was even made. A dark Superman movie could work but not with Superman himself being down and gloomy or having lost hope or being insecure. He is supposed to symbolize the opposite of those things. He should inspire people, not sit at the kitchen table wondering if he should be a hero... well that's my opinion anyways.
Agreed. Just like the original Star Trek theme was woven into the end credits of the 2009 reboot, every Superman movie should pay homage to this theme, or at the very least remix it into the end credits.
A man in a brightly coloured costume with a cape and his underpants on the outside. And yet he will save the world and ask no thanks in return simply because it is the right thing to do. The world today needs more Supermen...............
Amen to that. In a world where the thugs run and ruin our neighborhoods, little girls aspire to grow up to be strippers, and the rest of our youth are stuck on their phones, we need people to get up, get out, and make this world a better place.
RIP Richard Donner, you made me believe a man could fly, as a child I jumped off the back of the sofa wearing a tea towel and survived without any broken bones, I thank you.
I remember being a little boy and when those low rumbling bass horns start to blow with the drums at :37 my mind told me to rise up and save the world with my cloth red towel cape. Such a hero’s theme. A child’s imagination is the best.
Without doubt, one of the best scores ever written. If this doesn't give you goosebumps, nothing will. Nearly 40 years old, and still nothing much in modern music can hold a candle to it. Hans Zimmer is exceptional, but John Williams will always be the Master.
Just turned 44, and saw this on the big screen at 6, and all this needs is "blue flying credits......" AMAZING!!! RIP TO THE GREATEST MAN OF STEEL OF ALL, CHRISTOPHER REEVE!!!!
Richard Herron I have to totally agree. This theme has blue eyed optimism. I love the Superman fanfare. I wish the Zimmer score had it. But how could he? It'd be a poor facsimile. Zimmer wrote a beautiful, hopeful theme underscored with a spine tingling four note motif. However, it missed the joyful fanfare of yesteryear.
+Shabba dabba THE BEST Superman of all!!! I snagged a t-shirt recently, ala the Shepard Fairey "Hope" poster, except that it had Christopher Reeve's Superman on it, and said "STEEL"!!
"Well, I certainly hope this little incident hasn't put you off of flying, miss. Statistically speaking, of course, it's still the safest way to travel."
Everytime this masterpiece is played, Chris Reeve smiles at us all from above in the sky...sending out love and hope. Chris you're Superman and you'll always be. You were not only a cape, boots and a suit. You were light... ❤❤❤❤🏆🏆🏆🏆👑👑👑👑 The other ones only play to be Superman.

One of my all-time favourite pieces of music. It's just majestic!
If music could make you fly...this is the one!
Any man over a certain age can’t help but feel his chest swell on hearing this piece. Brilliant.
How this soundtrack didn't win an Oscar is BEYOND me. Then again, John Williams was UNSTOPPABLE in the 70s, almost a monopoly of GREAT soundtrack music!
He’s STILL unstoppable.
ennio morricone is better
@@cdnsilverdaddy both titans of our time. as were bernstein, goldsmith and horner. but more of williams' works transcend cinema
so for me he's the GOAT
The first 5 seconds with the horns gave me the chills.
How many of us were children when we heard Sir John Williams create pure brilliance, thank you John for being part of my brilliant years.
If there is any piece of music that makes you stand a little taller and puff out your chest and just smile better than this, I haven't heard it yet. Still the single best comic book character theme ever composed. I don't believe it will ever be beaten. And 4-year old me agrees.
Bill Conti's 'Gonna Fly Now' from Rocky?
@@tobyhart8515 Close but not enough imo, i love that song but John Williams is on a whole other level.
Raiders theme is tied with this...long live Indy Jones!
His FACE...his NAME...always this SONG. Peace be with Mr. Reeves...the only Superman.
George?
Reeve idiot
Why does this make me so emotional ❤
You will believe that a man can fly. This music certainly has my spirits soaring.
For Christopher Reeve in heaven. The Real Superman.
I openly weep EVERY time.
@@captaingenius-o1c, I agree with you in a way that he said that years ago, but hopefully his words changed dearly into beliefs before his death.
"You've got me?! Who's got YOU?!!
I can never get tired of hearing this!
If this shit doesnt give you goosebumps or even shed a tear. Youre dead inside
UP! UP! AND AWAY!
John Williams is an absolute musical genius who took us on adventures with his music and filled our imaginations, while entertaining us. Thanks John.
Christopher Reeve made Superman real with his acting, not CGI. Only later would we all learn just how super of a man he truly was.
He was good..but that's it really.
The man is a legend and will always be superman mr reeves 👍
Christopher Reeve lives in our hearts, and through this gorgeous master piece ❤️ 🦸♂️
This theme will always sound to me like the true spirit of the Superman myth--nothing else comes close. And Christopher Reeve was the most believable, funny, romantic, dashing Superman of them all, so I'm delighted to hear this theme written for the movies he starred in!
Perfectly described!!!!!!!!
I agree :) perfectly said
Sensacional!
Christopher Reeve was truly brilliant in the role, it can only ever be his.
With this music the Legend lives on, as will the memory of Christopher Reeve. Sadly gone, but never forgotten !
I listened to this before entering a Stochastic Calculus final exam, I needed a 75 to pass. I got an 87.
Alright then, good!!!
David Gutierrez Great job!!!
Up up and away
Super!
you've been gotten super powe
How can you listen to this and not feel like flying?!! AWESOME!!
18/11/2021 - I am crying while I listen to it... Jhon Williams is one of the most brilliant composers of our time.
You spelled John wrong
Does it matter? We all know who they’re talking about!
Why does this song just make you feel GOOD!!😄😄😄😄😄😄
Because you're feeling hope.
It was INTENDED TO!!!
RIP Chris the best Superman John Williams score the best of the best total classic song and sounds music will live on very long time 👍👍👍👍👍
良い映画も良い曲も、たとえ何十年経とうとも全く色褪せない。
だからこそ「名作」と言える。
ポリコレに汚されたスーパーマンを元の正しい姿に戻して欲しい。
I'm 49 now. saw this in December 1978...I was 11 years old. and yes...I believed a man could fly. and this is one of the greatest movies scores of all time
Brad Underwood Like you !!!!!! lever Forget....
Two years old myself, first movie my dad took me too. And a can’t agree with you more
Brad Underwood Brad- your childhood intuition was true, we are very close to flying like Superman, it’s just a matter of time before we develop this technology to the point where it fits inside a skintight suit… Just look at how small we shrunk the computer since this movie was first released… Remember, if you can imagine it, dream it, that means it exists somewhere in some other reality we just haven’t discovered it yet!
And it may still be some of the finest, most believable wire-work ever. And, let's be honest, while Indiana Jones and Star Wars get all the love, THIS may be his finest music of all.
i´m 53 now, i have 13 in that time, and everyone in the theatre clap to that escene, it was just amazing! yes i´m in tears now.
"Don't worry miss, I've got you!"
"...you've got me? Who's got YOU!?"
*smiles*
Alonzo Branson "My helium-based diet"
Alonzo Branson 😆
LOL
I like pink very much, Lois :)
The power of this score is unreal.. No matter what mood you are in this always makes you feel alive. Utter legend tune.
After listening to this piece of perfection I feel I can fly too. Amazing
My man :)
And even to this day the film has shone. I really believed he was flying. None of the CGI that was in the modern version. CGI sucks sometimes and they believe we are fools and take it all in. Chris is and always will be Superman.
Elder Rondy Fleming Yes, great movie!
Elder Rondy You speak the truth! I was 14 when I saw this in the theater in 1978. Complete awe. What a time to be a kid, with the original Star Wars in 1977 and this in 1978.....John Williams at his pinnacle!!
Every Superman movie should have this theme. It's like changing the Star Wars theme. You just can't do it.
@Anon Sevenforsixfivesix Agreed. Every 'good' Superman movie should have this theme. Therefore, the DCEU movies don't qualify to use it.
@Nick Peluso AMEN!!!
You are right every superman movie should have this music
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
This 🌎World, our planet🌍 Earth needs🌏

Not all Heroes wear capes... they are just Hiding in Plain sight... Heroes still walk among Us.
So darn true !
What a faithful rendition of John William's masterpiece of a theme. So iconic, the opening bars alone can leave you breathless with anticipation.
RIP Richard Donner, you made me believe a man could fly, as a child I jumped off the back of the sofa wearing a tea towel and survived without any broken bones, I thank you.
Con solo escuchar los primeros acordes, ya sabes que el día está salvado.
I am 40 and I was a kid when this came out. Still to this day, it makes the hairs rise in my arms
Simply brilliant. One of John Williams' best scores, and that's saying a lot.
Hans Zimmer is exceptional, but John Williams will always be the Master.
agree ;)
Richard Herron then again this year all music sucked
Just turned 44, and saw this on the big screen at 6, and all this needs is "blue flying credits......" AMAZING!!!
RIP TO THE GREATEST MAN OF STEEL OF ALL, CHRISTOPHER REEVE!!!!
Finally someone who sees both sides of the Williams-Zimmer debate, instead of slagging one off.
My nerdy ass honestly shed a tear listening to this amazing and iconic theme.
I still do everytime...
I did
same
Happy to know I’m not alone. 😢
At 3:30, every time
This made my heart jump out of my chest!!! ❤👏🙌
As soon as I hear the opening notes, I always think of Christopher Reeve. :(
+Shabba dabba THE BEST Superman of all!!! I snagged a t-shirt recently, ala the Shepard Fairey "Hope" poster, except that it had Christopher Reeve's Superman on it, and said "STEEL"!!
THE greatest Superman of all time.
+Shabba dabba The one and only Superman
+Lee78072 yep :)
+Shabba dabba This, to me, will, always & forever, be the "Christopher Reeve Theme"........bless his brave soul....
"Don't worry, Miss, I've got you!"
"You've got me? WHO'S GOT YOU???"
"The cables hanging from the roof of the studio of course"
One of my favorite lines...
mind brother ....
"Well, I certainly hope this little incident hasn't put you off of flying, miss. Statistically speaking, of course, it's still the safest way to travel."
@@Deadbuck73 - Say Jim, that's a bad outfit. Woo.
I don’t think you all understand just how note to note this is perfection, I mean literally close your eyes and just listen
Could've really fallen straight out of the screen, this rendition. I can almost see him flying just hearing this.
agree the way this was played was quite similar to Williams' orginal version for the film. In this version I did here little touches of Ken Thorne.
This aint just music, it's a national monument
I miss Christopher Reeve. He was the real Superman. I get emotional when I hear this them. God rest his soul forever!!!
I missed him too Christoper Reeve was my all time favorite.
Tom welling played a damn good Clark Kent
Well, he didn't believe in God/Jesus, so he is in hell.....unless he changed his mind right before he died...
Oh batman, hollywood if full of people going to hell, including folks like Reeves...
@@captaingenius-o1c We'll see how you do....
Everytime this masterpiece is played, Chris Reeve smiles at us all from above in the sky...sending out love and hope.
Chris you're Superman and you'll always be. You were not only a cape, boots and a suit.
You were light...
❤❤❤❤🏆🏆🏆🏆👑👑👑👑
The other ones only play to be Superman.
You nailed it! Christopher Reeve ... Kal El 😉
teary eyed each time I hear this music. Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman
Same composer
There really is no words to adequately describe the hope, the success, or the pure magic of this theme song. It is simply the best.
