They took an RPG game, made it an RPG plataformer, turned it into a pseudo-RPG game, and then into a puzzle game with RPG elements...
Yeah the paper Mario series is weird
At least it seems like a decent puzzle game instead of a poorly implemented pseudo-rpg. I would still prefer a return to form tho
Bands that release the same album over and over get stale, fast.
...what's wrong with that?
If they’re going to push the RPG elements to the wayside, then they might as well go all the way and make another platformer like Super Paper Mario. That game knew what it wanted to do and wasn’t trying to be something it wasn’t.
Me after watching review: Yeah the war between Paper Mario fans isn’t stopping anytime soon....
It will be called "Paper Mario: Thousand Year's War".

@@lol-ih1tl lol
@@IfOUGHTpIRANHAz wrong. The first two entries were what the made the series great. Why fix something that works well???
I'm still baffled how they've made the same mistake with the battle system for 3 games now. If you're not going to have a progression system, then what's the point of turn-based battles? Just make the game a puzzle-platformer since you're going to avoid enemies as much as you can anyway. They seem to have the idea with the paper mache baddies that you fight outside in the world so they should just keep that with every other enemy in the game. The boss battles can stay though, cause they look freakin' awesome.
Thats exactly what they did, thats why the combats are literally puzzles
If it was completely up to Tanabe then there would be 0 turn base battles, but because it is a Paper Mario game and PM is known for its RPG like mechanics, Tanabe was pretty much forced into adding something he didnt really want.
@@alejandropradalozano6525 But just like skill points in most AAA games, it seems to be inconsequential and tacked-on, unlike puzzle-platformers like Braid or Portal, where puzzles are the most important game mechanic and often have plot-relevance.
This is a different battle system so no they didn’t
@@gracklepolp0534 wasn't Super Paper Mario NOT turn-based?
Despite the quality of Olivia's writing, I can't be the only one who's getting tired of these fairy-type characters who only show up for one Paper Mario game, am I? They're just so forgettable imo. Mario and Luigi really did it best, having Starlow seemingly be a series main-stay for three whole games.
Seriously, Huey in color splash, that weird crown from Sticker Star, and now this. It's not like you can't have a new companion in every game, Zelda seems to do just fine doing that most of the time, but these seem so generic and unmemorable.
Hm, now that you mention it, Thousand Year Door didn't have one of those.. and unless you count the star child who mostly only exists for the Peach sections, neither did the original. Very interesting...
RIP M&L games
Isn't Huey a bucket?
Wait, what? The general consensus is that Starlow had no reason to be in Dream Team or Paper Jam. So no, Mario and Luigi shouldn't get any props for that.
A friend of mine asked me something that I think is worth sharing here: Why does Paper Mario still use turn based combat? if there's no experience, what value is there? It simply destroys the pacing. Super Paper Mario proved a Paper Mario game can work without turn based combat, and the Origami King has real time encounters. If they're dead set on not following in the previous game's steps, then drop the turn based combat. It feels like "It's Paper Mario, we need turn based battles" but have no interest in having stat building (which is what off-sets how repetitive turn based battles are).
For Paper Mario 7 that we get 4 years from now, please either make a turn-based RPG with experience, or just drop turn-based combat outright and make Super Paper Mario 3D. I'd rather have one or the other.
True, but then again, think about this: if you only liked the turn based combat because of the XP, do you actually like the battles? Games are supposed to be fun! I like that the battles have no purpose because like that, when I do want to battle, I can do it for fun and if I don’t want to do it, I can just skip it and still have the same amount of skill to beat the boss.
That is why I enjoyed Color Splash
I never really thought of it like that before
@@okayokey I'm of the opinion that turn based battles aren't interesting on their own. Hence why they require an incentive for you to want to engage in them. Without the incentive of EXP, its pointless to have turn based battles.
Let me simplify it like this, Imagine if zero Mario Games existed. Then Galaxy One and Two release. 5 years go by and the next Mario game releases is Mario Kart. We expected a platformer, we wanted a platformer, we asked for a platformer, Then we were teased a platformer, then we didn’t get it? Mario Kart is still great, but a slap in the face to fans. We’ve been asking for a certain game, 3 times now we’ve been teased it and they didn’t deliver. If you don’t want to make the game at the very least make it clear from the first trailer it’s not what we want
Fun fact: TTYD lead composer returned for this game. This is the first time since then. He just has a different last name because of marriage
Interesting. I thought a lot of the music sounded VERY classic. I specifically remember listening to Luigi's theme for an extended period of time and I could just see it being in TTYD.
The game’s music is great, though Color Splash is also one of my all time favorite soundtracks. Can’t wait until they fix the battle system proper one day.
Is it Japanese tradition for the Husband to take a last name or is there another reason?
That’s actually not true. I just searched it up.
Remember when Paper Mario's combat was well liked enough to have a pit of 100 trials?
I mean it was not THAT good imo, pit of 100 trials got tedious FAST

TTYD wasn't interconnected. You used pipes to get everywhere. You were confined to where you were and couldn't walk anywhere.
I would argue that TTYD comes closer to the term interconnected than not. There is no overworld with level/zone selects. If you want to get from one zone to the next, you must walk to that zone’s entrance, be it a pipe, cheep cheep blimp, or a train. That makes it feel interconnected, even if it’s not seem less transitions between locations.
As non-interconneted as SPM's world doors and SS/CS's world map, with the exception that the "entrances" are scattered everywhere making moving around a slog
The general consensus when everyone got the game for preview: Battles can be too easy
The general consensus after they finished the game for review: Battles can be too difficult.
the coins must be used to ease the battles it seems, just not sure yet.
It kinda sounds like the difficulty is fine with those two pieces of information put together. I bet when difficulty spikes using coins might be how you ease the difficulty spikes.
the impression I'm getting is that battles aren't hard, they can just take forever
I actually found battles too easy, as they were built so you can complete any non-boss in one turn.
This game was hella easy lol

I don’t understand what this team’s thought process is at all. They experiment and often get varying results that don’t help the game’s reception at all. It’s just baffling that they continue to do so in this game, and, according to Andre, end up with high highs and low lows. I just don’t understand it...

@Juancarlos Escalante Not to mention, thanks to the initial rumors and some promising things in the original trailer, there are likely still many people who have the idea that it's a return to form, or at least more of a return to form than it actually is, so that will also help the sales.

The last few Paper Mario games have such great presentations and funny writing but are not fun to play. They make better "lets play" videos than a game and that is disappointing.
And now with Mario and Luigi stuck in limbo we may never get another true rpg from Mario. I miss the Way those old RPGs expanded the Mario world, I like Paper Marios but they seem to take place in a different universe now.
I was thinking the exact same thing! I might hop on a couple streams of this game, but I have no intention of buying the game for myself after everything I have heard
They lost their replayability once their gameplay became boring and stale, the story is only worth visiting once and is for the fun writting which you can experience on RUclips play throughs
The old games are called Mario story in Japan. But from sticker star and on, Japan calls them paper Mario. So you could take this as a sign that Nintendo in Japan considers them 2 different series. Mario story and Mario & Luigi are both dead.
I was waiting for Mario & Luigi for Switch, then Alphadream a bankruptcy in the knee.
A Mario+Rabbids sequel is our only hope for a true Mario RPG now
It certainly looks good on paper...
Rampe
On the bright side, at least the freakin sky and water aren’t paper like colour splash lol.
But sadly the results might be paper thin
The game fell flat.
oh my god these are actually good puns, you certainly took your time on these huh?
@Rampe
"Ja nyt ulos täältä!"
One of the visual gripes I have with the recent Paper Mario games is the fact that they add a white border around all of the characters instead of just ending the model at its natural edge, the black border.
Also jumping on a piranha plant? Oh dear.
facts when they started doing that, the games became trash
Jay Casillas sticker star didn’t have the white outline
In case you weren't paying attention, Mario was using the shiny "iron" boots which those allow you to jump on spiky enemies.
But I agree on the white outline.
& they removed Mario’s voice. No idea why they did that. He hasn’t grunted since Super Paper Mario.
They also removed the fluid 60 fps animations characters had and made everything like it was stop motion.
I find it so frustrating that Nintendo did address some of the combat issues of Sticker Star and Color Splash by giving you permanent attack options, and THEN chose this time to radically change the battle system again.
I’m no fan of the modern Paper Mario formula, but they keep saying “hm, people complained about this aspect, let’s just replace it entirely, or offer something else that doesn’t even address the complaint.” Like if you wanted ketchup on your burger, and they offered you tomatoes instead-and then they FINALLY decide to give you a condiment instead, and they hand you mustard. I just don’t understand why they can’t iterate on things that need improvement without throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Actually all of the weapons have durability accept for the basic "boot" and "hammer". So they actually did not fully address the criticism since the only way to have boss fights not last over a hour (the venumentals) is to have good weapons.
Yeah it seems like Nintendo and their associated deva are almost always trying to innovate, even to such a degree that is wholly unnecessary. Sometimes (most notably with Paper Mario) it's like they've already pulled a diamond out of the rough and instead of cutting it and refining into an even prettier gem, they let it sit uncut and just dig for more. There are Nintendo other series that do try not to completely throw out what made their predecessors good while still trying new things, like the main 3D Mario games (64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey).
Well said.
they need to not try to remake a game series every game. keep what works and renovate what doesn't. People buy multiple games in the series for the magic previously experienced by an older installment.
You want traditional rpg elements you should play Mario n Luigi Saga. I feel Nintendo wants to differentiate the 2 and this game is still turn based and has well more strategy than Game Explain lets on. Its more fun to play than to watch but I could say that about any paper mario bc even the OGs are pretty basic battle systems. Atleast with this game the puzzle like battle system is like an odd game of chess
0:07 is that a West Side Story reference in a Nintendo game. Neat.

I really appreciate gamexplain giving this game an honest review. I honestly thought they would give this a great review regardless just because it’s paper Mario, but this review was much more critical than I expected, and I appreciate that objectivity. Although the game seems like it has some redeeming qualities, I will probably sit this one out. The lack of XP is just too annoying for me personally to have to go through tons of pointless battles. Hopefully, people that want to play it will enjoy it, but I also hope Nintendo will finally get the message if this game doesn’t sell well. Either way, thanks again for the thorough review and keep up the good work.

Well, rip. The fact that he said he started running and avoiding the fights makes me think it isn’t worth picking up this game. I want to play a game where I like the entire experience, and not one where I don’t like half the game. He doesn’t like half the bosses, started getting annoyed with the combat, and (he likes this, but I don’t) the game constantly reminds me it is paper? Stinks to say, still not impressed. I’ll stick with Bug Fables.
K
I mean... I don't think I've played an RPG where I didn't start avoiding fights by the end (or wishing I could avoid them, in the case of random encounters). I'd still say some of those games were fantastic.
Android 19 See, I feel like every battle is worth something, especially near the end where they get you more exp. Reaching the max level and things like that are a ton of fun, but there isn’t even a way to do that here. Totally understand the point of some great games where you might near the end avoid some battles, but I would say that those sections then aren’t very good parts of that game. When a core concept of the game becomes something players try to avoid, I would say that concept didn’t fully accomplish its goal.
BDOGG345 I used to run into battles in TTYD and 64 just because they were fun, it wast just an EXP grind, leveling up gave more options, but being low level was still possible with correct planing.
@@BDOGG345 I 100 percent agree with you, I mean how can a game with battles be fun if you can beat the final boss right from the start of the game? I think its practically necessary to have an leveling system, and it just seems like paper mario devs dont care about what the fans want and are just putting in whatever.
HUGE missed mark, they could have implemented a voltron mechanic. They should have made it so that you could fold up your companions into something like different weapons, all of your companions mix and matched together into different origami things for abilities and super weapons, and as you gained more friends you could then fold them all up into one large ultra buddy for a disgustingly powerful effect. AHHHHHHHohwell.

I think it’s better to call the first 3 Paper Mario games “Mario’s Story” (the Japanese title, and it fits the theme that those first 3 games have amazing characters, stories, and didn’t focus too much on the paper aesthetic), whereas the new stuff is “Paper Mario” (much heavier emphasis on arts and crafts, not as much emphasis on the strong, RPG and story-telling elements of the first 3)
I’m glad at least not everyone of Nintendo’s dev teams have the attitude of what Paper Mario’s team does. I liked bug fables a lot, but it’s definitely an indie game, as it’s aesthetic doesn’t have as strong of a presence as a game like Hollow Knight. It does well in so many areas, but the art can look a bit messy at times, so it falls just short of that seemingly triple A polish. Whereas HK could easily be mistaken for a triple A game if not for its affordable price point; with an art style that is crisp and cohesive throughout the entire experience.

The battle system is what’s really steering me away from purchasing this game. I’m not a big fan of puzzles and I like quick in your face combat with my RPGs. The battle system does not provide that for me here. I like the level up mechanic where you grind for quite some time only to discover you’re under leveled and have to really fight hard to win. Investing in specific stats makes games more replayable but this game seems like a one and done deal and it’s sadly because of the battle system. It doesn't feel like they've learned much from the previous games. I get the impression that they are obstinately insisting on doing their own thing for the sake of it, in defiance of most of the feedback. Granted, not every idea on display here is bad and I do respect them wanting to be inventive and doing something new, but the execution has been missing the mark and this doesn't look much better.
My thoughts exactly.
Given that their original reasoning was because Mario and Luigi was a thing, there’s not really any excuse any longer since Alphadream went bankrupt.

If almost everyone considers TTYD the best paper mario game, why nintendo moves away from that gameplay?
@Latcen 9 I think Nintendo is probably trying to troll us all and make fans angry.
Sort answers it was on game cube and they didn't give it a chance
This comment is the definition of mental gymnastics.
Because, in terms of uniqueness, Super Paper Mario went too far and Nintendo decided to make everything super uniform from then on.
because apparently nintendo doesnt want fans to get what they want as much as they want to have their own agenda. which apprently is: they dont want paper mario to be an rpg with unique personality. they either want to at some point carry on with the mario&luigi series or do a whole other mario rpg series. they dont want paper mario to be an rpg competitor but to be its own thing. and i think it blows.
I’m probably gonna wait for Arlo’s review to see if I should buy the game. He has a certain passion for Paper Mario I don’t see in other reviewers.
For real bruh same here i wanna hear his opinion he low key my favorite game reviewer and all that

He isn’t afraid to kiss Nintendo’s ass and straight up say if something sucks.
@@alejandropradalozano6525 Nope, last time I checked he even re-reviewed color splash to make sure it didn't have any nostalgia bias. Not to mention he even gave Swsh a critical review despite all the other reviews at the time giving it a fair score for it just being pokemon (as in praising the fact the game is just a worse version of what came before with slightly better 3ds models and terrible animation. *along with bad gimmicks that ruin the battles as a whole*)
@@alejandropradalozano6525 Did you... even see his Color Splash review?
Thank you Andre for the balanced review. Seems like it’s mainly a mixed bag. I definitely will be skipping out on it. The game is still missing a lot of things I originally loved Paper Mario for. I lost interest in both Sticker Star and Color Splash halfway through and I don’t want to do that again. I really hope the first three games get released in a collection some day.
@Pen Bashiro, MD Still closer than SS and CS and potentially OK
Pen Bashiro, MD
Imo, it still maintained the heart of a Paper Mario game with its characters, story (best in the series), and world. It still had a ton of RPG elements, it was an action RPG platformer after all. While I liked the turn based combat more, the gameplay in that game was far better than sticker star and color splash. I actually thought the action gameplay was pretty fun in general and it allowed for some interesting mechanics like the space level.
I think I’m the only person that loves sticker star
The more and more I learn about the game the less excited I get. I probably will not purchase this game. Cmon Nintendo you knew what Paper Mario fans wanted but you just didn't listen.
😡😡😡
It's not that they won't listen, it's just that they aren't interested in returning to the first 2 games. If you people wanna spend another 4 or 5 years begging them to make another game like the older ones go right ahead and waste your time. I've accepted that Paper Mario is never going back to what it used to be, and considering that I ended up liking Super, Color Splash and I'll probably like this game I'm fine with it.
I love how the first thing andre does is crap all over sticker star lmaoo
I never played Sticker Star...but I just keep hearing how BAD it is.......... Yikes...
@@starless4146 I highly recommend Gamexplain's review of it. It's not a horrendously, awful game, but certainly has obnoxious things about it. My main gripe with Sticker Star is how annoying it can be when you don't know where to go next and how much pointless running around you can end up doing.
@@starless4146 watch the last stream of sticker star gameplay from gamexplain, its hell
@@starless4146 Sticker star is really not that bad. It honestly seems like a much better game than Origami King. Out of the modern trilogy, Sticker Star has the best gameplay, but the worst presentation (to others. I much prefer a straightforward game than empty open worlds. Color Splash's battle mechanics were always either too drawn out or too stupidly easy.) I finished Sticker Star. I put down Color Splash around 40% through. The 3D made everything truly beautiful. Origami King makes Color Splash look like the original two games.
A lot of people just like to bandwagon hate against Sticker Star because it's the popular thing to do. It's the first one to change things drastically in a way that wasn't received well by fans generally. Now if a Paper Mario is garbage, it's nothing surprising. Even to be expected.
Yeah, the toads, treasures and not so bottomless holes are quite annoying, but most of the time you dont even need to find them, personally, as a completionist, I found them all and got 100% in the game, and the best part was that I had a ton of fun finding them as it just gave me more to do in this amazing game, I remember completing the story and then realising that I was nowhere near completing the game as I still had a ton of treasures, toads and not so bottomless holes to find, though I will admit there were a few times where getting some of these collectibles was quite annoying, im looking at you fishing, but most of the time I had a ton of fun finding these and ill definitely have to play it again in a year or two.
This review baffles me... I’ve been playing this game for 4 days and I can confidently say that up to where I am right now, Origami King is miles ahead of color splash. If you are a TYD fan, you’ll like this one much more for a number of reasons... combat is more interesting and rewarding (even if Andre thinks otherwise), the map is super interesting and characters are much more memorable. And about the jokes, I’ve been playing it in Spanish and so far, it seems also better than Color Splash. I’d say that my list goes like this. 1. Thousand Year Door. 2. Super Paper Mario. 3. 64 and Origami King. 4. By a bigger margin Color Slpash. And sticker star is just trash
"GOD ITS SO GOOD!"
*gets stuck in a rock twice in a row*

I actually found the Vellumental bosses to be really fun, the difficulty made them very rewarding, and you fight them with the knowledge that you'll gain their power after you beat them. I do agree that the Legion of Stationery battles were more fun though
So definitely a skip for me. The battle system sounds tedious and repetitive.
Just like every other rpg game with traditional turn-based battle system.
@@marcheharvey2301 No, not every one is tedious. Can it get repetitive? Yes, but there's a difference between being fatigued from playing the game and being tired from the gameplay.

@@marcheharvey2301 yea! Just like persona 5 and Dragon quest! superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr boring
@@marcheharvey2301 You are joking, right?
Ok, so this one might a long banter, but please, hear me out: I think some games should be valued by themselves and not only by how they compare to the saga they belong. Sure, it has a Paper Mario name on it, but what is considered a true game in that saga is a value put by the gamers, not the devs. If someone has the right (or the authority) to set in stone what a Paper Mario game is it's them. For them as long it's Mario made of paper it's enough. I'm not saying we should oversimplify that idea, but we should at least acknowledge it.
And then I see so many people trashing on the battle system in regards that it has no usefulness because there's no EXP system. Even if we assume it's not useful, the game allows you to avoid the battles or flee them. Also, as you progress and "become stronger" you have the chance to just jump onto the enemies or hit them with the hammer, again, giving you the choice of battling or not. Sure, you get fewer coins that way, but it's still your choice. And here's the thing: The battle system is fun BUT also useful. You get coins to purchase accessories, items, and weapons. All of them somehow compensate if the puzzle side of the battles is tough or frustrating to the player. When playing, I noticed that, for example, spinies can be defeated easily with iron boots (purchasable weapon) if you arrange them in a straight line, but if your skills with the puzzle are better trained, you can arrange them in a 2x2 area, then being able to smash them with the hammer, with no need to spend on weapons. It's up to the player how to face the battles.
Coins are not always abundant, especially once you can buy accessories. So the battle becomes something important to master since you get more coins if you don't get damaged and/or have a perfect or great enemy arrangement.
Last but not least: Boss battles. The arrow system. The best way to put your skills to the test. At least with already two bosses in my pocket, I have to say that the battles are not precisely hard. There's no OHKO (maybe later, but I don't know yet), but the battle is quite long if you don't move the panels in the most optimal way. The game doesn't punish you severely for taking your time, but again, you get the feeling of accomplishment when being able to arrange everything nicely and hitting hard on the enemy.
Sure, there're expectations to be met when it comes to a game that belongs to a saga, but we can't be so blind to its own merits to the point of trashing on it. The game looks great, has really clever writing, beautiful soundtrack and personally, I enjoy the battle system and the fact that the game gives you the freedom to have it or not.
Personally, I saw the battle system and died inside. The game looks like an annoying grind. The day of the treehouse event, I cancelled my preorder.
Get Bug Fables instead. I think I'll be doing that too to satisfy my Paper Mario itch

The true moment this intro was made for is finally here!
"Was it able to surprise and delight me as with Color Splash, or is it another Sticker Star-calibre disappointment?"
Fans of the original two Paper Mario games: *visible confusion*
This franchise has basically become Pokemon with every new entry being, "Oh well maybe next time we'll get the game we want" super disappointed but I expected this to be a let down with those battle mechanics.
You know, what I hate is that people are complaining about Pokémon and Paper Mario for the exact opposite reasons. One tries to use the formula that everyone knows and loves only to get backlash for it while the other tries to expand upon the gameplay by experimenting with new formulas and mechanics only to get backlash for it. What the hell do you people want?! Why do you have to complain about everything?!
Wth?? Pokemon didnt get backlash for the formula , it got backlash cuz of how lazy and half assed the game was, it came with so little content an a half assed story with super linear routes with pretty much almost nothing to explore , an then they also cut pokemon to improve graphics but they lied an didnt improve anything
I do not think that I understand. I get that the game feels generic in many aspects but it feels like a Pokémon game and has been doing things like it has. If you don’t want it to feel like other Pokémon games, then how do you want a Pokémon game? I can kind of understand what people want from a Paper Mario game (even if I disagree with many of their points), but what do people want from a Pokémon game. Developers are not machines that we can control and manipulate. They are people just like you and me, and they are free to do what they want.

I unfortunately think I’m cancelling my preorder :/ basically all of the videos leading up to release made me think I probably wasn’t going to like this game, but I was holding out hope for the reviews. Now with the reviews here, they seem to confirm that this game isn’t for me :/
Game has an 80 on metacritic dude, the reviews are good
Alejandro Prada Lozano It’s not that the reviews are bad, and honestly, if this game ever goes on sale, I still might pick it up someday. It’s just that the qualities I hoped this game would have (meaningful combat, more complex story), don’t really seem to be there :/ not to mention that reviews like Gamexplain’s don’t even get counted on Metacritic, so it’s a little difficult to look at a meta score and just be like “this game is/is not for me,”
Although I would like the return of the more classic RPG style gameplay in the series I have to give the devs credit for trying to innovate new gameplay experiences. This puzzle mechanic might not end up being my favourite but I will give it a shot.
This video is beautifully filled with Andre puns.
It sounds like this is another case of, "good writing, bad gameplay" or at least gameplay with diminishing returns. Sounds like Paper Jam is still the best modern Paper Mario game...although Paper Mario isn't the focal point.

Did you enjoy super at all?
Darius I enjoyed Super's story, characters, and writing, but found the gameplay got really boring by the ending. It didn't help that combat was unbalanced bowser + carrie broke the game. It was a solid 7/10 game that I would be stuck between a mixed or a liked on the GX scale.

I'm confused the review was very positive but your words made the game sound bad? You said the game felt dragged out at parts which were just barely made up by the pay off, that isn't good game design. You said that you found yourself mostly avoiding enemy fights were you could, that isn't good game design.
I'm not sure what to say the final result is just an opinion of you saying you liked the game but from just these TWO points alone, the TWO key mechanics of the paper Mario series I have to say this is not a good game. The goal of an RPG is to have an immersive story and battles that have a pay off whether it be getting items or experience. The story seems bare bones and the game seems artificially lengthened by large locations that take a long time to travel through. The battle system is a puzzle that, in essence, once you solve one you've solved them all. There is no growth with the player seemingly present. Granted I haven't played the game and this is just what I took off the review but 'Liked' seems to be giving to much credit to a game that shouldn't have that attention. Again I understand this is an opinion based review answer but when the review pretty much says 'its better than sticker star 8/10' I feel the consumers are done dirty by the review. I wish Paper Mario was held to a better standard as a game series, hell I wish Nintendo as a company listened to fan request more earnestly. Giving a game seemingly a good review because the previous recent entries were bad and this one was mediocre is not okay. Paper Mario The Origami King should be reviewed properly with all Mario RPG's in mind.
How did it compare to Paper Mario and TTYD?
How did it compare to the Mario & Luigi games?
How did it compare to Sticker Star and Colour splash?
This reviews comparisons are lack luster and don't tell the full story. The description states "...including comparisons to Thousand Year Door and Color Splash!" when all you say is Thousand door has better pacing and Colour splash has better dialogue. Tell me more! WHY?! What about the combat doesn't feel as good as TTYD? Why is this a good or bad thing?
Look I wasn't going to get the game any way but reviews that leave a positive statement to a game that is only average at best cause more people to buy the game thus Nintendo think paper mario is taking the right direction. It isn't and it hasn't been for a long time.
Thanks to anyone who read what turned out to be a rant :D

I feel like they really tried to get the masses to like this one. Now I liked Super so I don't know if I'll like this game but I will give it a fair chance if I do buy it.
At least Super had more creative designs for NPCs instead of Copy and Pasting them and had an XP system. You need an XP system to show some signs of strength progression. Even Breath of the Wild had some sort of XP system, though it was hidden from the player. It's XP system determined how easy it is to get better weapons and equipment from chests. Paper Mario completely abolished the XP system since Sticker Star... Screw this, I'm buying a different game when I can.
The masses won't ever be happy because its been too long. Nothing can ever live up to a nostalgic view of "perfection". Its the same reason why Valve gave up making Half Life 3.
To be honest, I'd love this game if it had a more compelling story. I like the puzzle aspects and think that they are inherently good shifts from the original formula. The issue for me is that the story seems like the typical "Fight the baddie, save the princess." I'm obviously a big fan of Super, but I didn't even like the gameplay of it that much. Thousand Year Door had a good story paired with good gameplay--exactly what I want.
Super at least didnt pretend to be like the first 2. It was it's own thing wotha unique look and gameplay. After that all we've gotten was stripped down shells of the first 2 style with gimmicks tacked on top.
@@ArynBacklogDragon To be fair, OK seems to at least be trying to be its own thing and not just a shell of the first two. However, it's clearly nowhere near as radically new and unique as Super.
