the problem is that nintendo keeps some franchises too homogenous, while constantly changing others. there's such a thing as moderation, you know.
Unless it's zelda. Then people give it a 10/10 no matter what it does.

It really is a shame that people still won't give Color Splash a chance. I was one of the first people on the hate train; hell, I laughed in the face of people who said 'don't judge it until you see more footage.' But these past few months have completely turned me around. I am so unbelievably hyped for this game now, it's hard to imagine how I had such disdain for it in the beginning.
I tried it and did a whole playthrough of it. I still think it sucks.

Saying that you don't like the game doesn't mean you're blinded by nostalgia...It just means they didn't enjoy the game. This game style doesn't appeal to everyone.
Nostalgia has nothing to do with this. I like some of the ideas they put in the game. It would have been way better in a more traditional Paper Mario game that's actually an RPG. None of this Action Adventure genre BS that Bill kept mentioning.. -.-

If Andre was being a fanboy, then his Sticker Star review would have been positive. If that review was negative and this was positive, then he clearly likes this game more.
If Andre was paid to do this he would be legally required to say it, so no he was not paid.

I wouldn't call cryptic blues coins, the pachinko level, and the toxic river perfect. It's still my favorite 3D Mario game though.

I can't believe they gave Metroid Prime Federation Force a "Liked a Lot" That game was so dull and disappointing.
Yeah... tell that to Smash 3DS, or Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon or Twillight Princess HD or Kid Icarus Uprising. Maybe they just had a different opinion, what a shock!
Oh and Metroid Prime Federation Force was good just not a Metroid game and it suffers from multiplayer only sindrome but it wasn't a bad game.

yea ikr i actually like coler splash in every way over ttyd i really liked sticker star and color splash and especially origomi king over ttyd and the other 2 older games in every way the generic characters were way more memorable at least for me and the battle system especially in origomi king was actually better than ttyds battle system i really like what there doing with the seories in every way over the first 3 games but that’s my opinion i grew up with the newer games and played the older ones and had more fun with the newer games in almost every way

Ario Cesar Ayala your right. Colour splash is really enjoyable. However it seems - which is a good thing :D - that the origami king is getting rid of stickers and cards and going back the the old system but with a different way of battling - the ring based system - with that there is the return of partners and the new art style seen in colour splash. All of this is looking towards an amazing paper Mario game.
Paper Mario Fans day that only the first 2 or 3 were good. But I’d say if you were a real Paper Mario Fan, you would enjoy all of them ( not liking one is okay, there is always that one that did not do as well as the other ones.)

The team can literally improve everything, and people are still like "I don't want to support it, because of this one small detail, that I still haven't actually given a chance"

Because god knows the team NEVER knew people didn't like Sticker Star's gameplay and lack of originality.
And like what Sanzaru Games did with Shattered Crystal, Nintendo tried to improve Sticker Star. And what do you know? A majority of people liked Shattered Crystal 2.0 and "Sticker Star 2.0"
I was on the edge on this one, if it was another Sticker Star done with no improvement, I wouldn't have bothered just to give Nintendo a Message. However, GameXplain does have similar views on Paper Mario that I have, so I trust them to tell me if this is an investment worth my time, so I'll give the game an honest shot now if Nintendo listened to the criticism of Sticker Star to make those ideas work. In the end, I would still prefer an Thousand Year Door-like game in terms of everything with the Paper Mario name, but if Nintendo is dead set on making Paper Mario a experimental series and Mario and Luigi the primary RPG series, I'm try this and see if they are making progress, but I still do call BS on the statement where Nintendo said the reason they experimented more with Paper Mario nowadays is because it was deemed to similar to Mario and Luigi, and thus they voted to make Mario and Luigi the Main RPG series; that was the worst thing you could've said Nintendo.

Jrocy247 That's Miyamoto's fault. He wanted it more like a traditional Mario game. This, to me, seems like the best we're going to get out of it.
I still don't want to support this combat system and lack of story/ character diversity (even if it is an improvement). However, it does seem to shine in just enough places that I'll probably pick it up cheaper down the road.

Honestly I'm starting to find the Paper Mario fanbase, specifically the TTYD part of the fanbase, to be pretty damn obnoxious & very close-minded at this point...Me on the other hand, coming from a person who downright DESPISED Sticker Star for what it was and after hearing this review, I'm actually quite interested in getting this game in the near future.

Hell when Mario kart Wii came out, I played it for a week then traded it in for the metroid prime trilogy so I really don't see what the issue is.

I've already played this game, it's called Sticker Star. It's the same framework, even with the same problems (breaking the thing out of ice has a random solution, bosses require stickers to be beaten, little strategy/options, needless gamepad functionality that wastes time aka selecting and flicking stickers). It's just in a nicer package (good writing, better visuals). The core features I didn't like are still present. I have enough experience with this style, and know myself well enough that it's not going to be worth my money. Heck, Sticker Star didn't cost me a dime and I still felt it was a waste. The only thing I'd want out of this is to see the writing, which I can get by watching someone else's play through.

I'm playing this game now. It's awesome. Like I'd give it a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 so far. You're right - it's not 1000 year door, but it's still really good in its own right. Every level is amazing and unique. Some games can't even get one of the mechanics right, and this game does dozens of them. The writing is great. The art is beautiful. The music is top-notch. This is a real reason to still own my Wii U :)

That's highly unlikely. There's still obviously a good, charming, fun and hilarious experience to be had in the characters, story and dialogue, along with really cool level designs. It has its own merits, reglardless of whether or not you want to compare it to Sticker Star.

I have 2 copies and have played it with bp only, and I can say its easily one of my favorite games of all time. Maybe Nintendo should remake the game next so other people could have a chance to play it.

Typical unique Nintendo game:
1. Nintendo announces game (probably at the wrong time for the series)
2. Unique Game Mechanics are hated by purists because it's simply different
3. Sheep of the internet follow with the mass dislikes on the trailer and related youtube vids
4. Game develops, Nintendo shows off more and better concepts, some fans are now open to change
5. Before it was cool to hate, now it is cool to love the game and hate the haters
6. Some will defend the new game to hell and make fun of anyone who has criticisms or legitimate problems with it
7. As the war unleashes, sales won't be that great (it might do good or ok, but not great)
8. Everyone forgets it about a month or two after
9. Nintendo sees sales of the game and decides that fans don't like the franchise anymore
10. Nintendo holds off making sequels (or just stops completely)

That is Falco Nintendo needs to listens to the fans more though why would they change the rpg in paper Mario maker if no one complained about it. Couldn't they just not make this game it's own IP seperate from the paper Mario series, if they listened more often to the fans and not change what's not broken then they would probably sell games better. But atleast this game is better then metroid prime federation.
Naga itzu I agree that Nintendo needs to listen to the fans more often. Although, I feel like sequels should try to be unique in a way, or else it becomes too similar to the original. But tbh, getting rid of the rpg element in Paper Mario did make me want to stay away from it. If someone like GameXPlain can find enjoyment, who am I to tell them they can't?

Game Sharks One of the harder things that video companies need to do with sequels is to make it unique enough as its own game, but not stray too far from the original to the point where the only resemblance is the story and characters (not including spin offs of course). You can also compare this with Star Fox Adventures, a game originally meant to starrt a new franchise, where the only similarities with previous star fox games were the characters, some story, and slapped in on-rails arwing levels. I will agree that sometimes, companies (especially Nintendo) try to make games so different, that it becomes a bad and/or unrecognizable game.
If this didn't have the Sticker star-ness that it does... I'd probably have considered it.

This game IMO is like Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice. It's a sequel that no one wanted but the developers wanted to do a better job with this style of gameplay and story which ultimately led to a better game. It's not better than the first two or the shizznite but it's worth an hour or two IMO.

It's also kinda like the 3DS Sonic Booms as a whole. Neither is bad, the second is even rather good apparently. But because of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric - which is FAR better known - no one will ever give either a chance and immediately assumes both are utter crap. Same here. If Sticker Start didn't exist, Color Splash would probably get some odd looks and some criticism, but not the level of unchanging vitriolic hatred that will never, ever, ever budge regardless of reviews or coverage.
Yea Sonic Boom Fire and Ice did get hate since day 1 I remerber even Johnny who is a bigger Sonic youtuber make fun of the name.

So basically because is not an RPG it is not good? Oh boy... I want to remember you about one little Wii game called Super Paper Mario and it was good, really good and huh it was a non-rpg Paper Mario game that also the partners are kinda forgotten along with turn base battles. I said that because I'm sure that when people saw SPM they thought "ow... it is a platformer now, well... I'm not going to buy it".

A reminder that we should always set the bar low for expectations until we play the games ourselves.
I don't care how good this game is, it's still a moronic decision by Nintendo, and I won't monetarily support it. The lack of story, and Nintendo's insistence that Paper Mario can't be an RPG anymore is basically taking a shit on everyone who enjoyed the first three games. Yeah, innovation is fine, but literally rewriting a game's formula so that it doesn't resemble what the series was initially isn't innovation. It's destruction and replacement. If Nintendo wants to "be innovative," they can do it on an original IP, and not completely mess up an existing one.
I kinda agree with Arlo more than Andre. It's definitely an improvement, but the combat is god awful and the game is WAY too easy.

Why Do I See You Everywhere? I don't know how you can say that when you've clearly just stated you don't know how the mechanic works fully.
If you can't just quickly select and click to start an attack, it's not good combat. Combat should be strategic yet fast paced. Since you can't select which enemy to attack and most of them are incredibly easy, that's removing both the fast pace AND strategy.

Arlo s review sucks. I know for a fact he did not play through even half of the game. He just says the battle system sucks and that it is a downgrade from thousand year door and does not even mention the awesome levels towards the end of the game.

I'm not a Paper Mario fan, but I like how they bring enemies from all kinds of Mario games, e.g. the Dino Rhino from Super Mario World and Draggadon from Captain Toad TT

I like new enemies as much as the next guy, but I would much prefer they rehash the Sarsalanders and Mario Landers than some random new enemy that may never be seen again( unless they are story-relevant like Shroobs and X-Nauts.)

colour splash is smash 4, TYD is melee and sticker star is brawl. everyone loves the GameCube game but the sequel took the series is a weird and bad direction but the Wii u game does that new direction really well.

Not really. There's as many people defending Brawl as there are defending Melee. Both are good games. Whether Brawl or Melee is the best is a recurring debate. In SS it's different because it is a terrible game and everyone who has played the series will know every other PM game is better. There's just no debate as you can't compare it to the other games. Also SPM is ny favorite PM game, why do people keep forgetting about it?

Unpopular opinion (at least in this echo-chamber) TTYD isn't that good. The Mario & Luigi games have a battle system that is better in every way. The story is as basic as it gets, the partners aren't interesting, and the backtracking is atrocious.The one thing that does deserve hype is the dungeon design in TTYD. That shit is A+.

Also, in my opinion, the Paper Mario games already did a great job at separating themselves from Mario & Luigi. Say what you will, it's my opinion.
This game I believe is a Masterpiece. Also, here's the thing. Sticker Star according to fans was a complete waste, but I'm sure that it's not that bad. But you also have to think. Sticker Star was the base that created this game. Most of the mistakes seen in Sticker Star that people pointed out were improved upon and made even better. There's a lot of good humor, the levels of exploration is amazing, the battles have a purpose, the story is an improvement, the visuals were taken from Sticker Star but made even better, and you interact with more than just Toads and even then, some of the Toads can be unique and special like the different Squads, the Pirates, etc.
People need to recognize that even though Sticker Star might not be the best Paper Mario game, it did have a benefit for what was to come in the future. It as mentioned before was the base for Color Splash and some aspects were taken from Sticker Star and Color Splash and implemented into the newest game coming out being The Origami King.

So, do you feel that you have a better opinion or is it because that's how everyone thinks? I just wanted to state my opinion which is just as important as everyone else's opinion and I'm not saying that it's more important than anyone else's.
I'm trying to support the game for what it is and what good came out of it. The problem I see is how people always criticise the game because that it's not like the original 2 games. I feel that the diversity of the series with the different styles make the original 2 games that much more unique. Each style of Paper Mario is unique and good in its own way.
Just calm down and don't yell at me. I don't like people yelling at me against a game that I actually enjoy.
I just started playing this game a week ago for the first time completely blind, just pending the final battle now, and I absolutely agree. By far my favorite in the series (so far, still need to play Origami King). I'm just glad Nintendo keeps doing their thing, because as much as I enjoyed TTYD, if it were up to fans we'd just have the same sequel to it multiple times, instead of a refreshing take on each iteration. Not everyone wants traditional RPG Exp and leveling, CP feels more like a Mario game because it streamlines all that to just an interesting adventure, where enemies are what they're supposed to be in a game, obstacles in your path, not "stop here for the required grinding"
Is the game 720p or 1080p? Cause I've seen a lot of videos uploaded as 1080p but it looks like 720p since it perfectly matches each pixel of the game with each pixel of my screen (although slightly blurry due to upscaling-then-downscaling), which is 1280x800 (with black bars on top and bottom)
Well color me impressed! Genuinely surprised that it stuck the landing. I've made my peace with Paper Mario never retuning to its roots so perhaps I was too quick to judge this game because of my bias towards the originals

Hmm I never beat Color Splash because I couldn't wrap my head around the slow battle system... But after watching this review, I think I'm gonna give it another chance! It definitely had the charm so I'm not gonna let the battle system break the whole game for me this time.

I should also point out that the new Battle Spin is a step up over Sticker Star. If I encounter a weak enemy, I could just battle spin a Jump card to finish it & not waste my good cards. Same for getting a free heal if you spend enough coins to guarantee a Mushroom card.
Because of the new Battle Spin, there's no need to carry normal Jump/Hammer, Mushrooms and Flower cards in your deck.
(unless you're low on coins which isn't much an issue)

So in this game do you actually target enemies? I remember that in Sticker Star you always attacked the front most minion which definitely didnt add to the depth of the battle system.
Finally someone agrees with me on color splash!! I loved this game! The only bad thing is I completed the game way to fast. The game is really easy and I wish it was longer or harder because I loved playing this game. The only thing I haven't completed is the card museum but I am putting that on hold right now so I can focus on maxing other Mario games.

The most bafflingly frustrating thing to me, is when people write off the 'review' itself, as bad, because the reviewer gives the game a rating opposite to what they'd like to hear, then proceeds to criticise the site/reviewer as unreliable, bias or invalid.
A good review:
-Has a good intro that gives some context to their own opinions
-Addresses plot, presentation and gameplay
-Has a clear verdict/summary.
-Structured
-Well written
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
-Gives fair pros and cons that address whether you should play the game or not, or what may be an issue for you.

How long was the game?
This feels way too positive, the majority of the points were, "the writing is great!" But the rest is just "its better than Sticker Star" and he is so content with that, which makes no sense to me. Its not my cup of tea. It has a completely different audience than the orginals and I'm sort of frustrated that they have ignored the original fans. And they basically made no changes to the Sticker Star formula, its the same thing, just a little better. Also, everyone commenting things like "now the haters can shut up" and "you just don't like change", there are still some problems with this game, its just, Andre cares about different things then other people do. Some people will agree with Andre and be like, any problems can be overlooked because I don't really care about that stuff too much, but for other people, the parts with the most problems are what matter the most. I'm not gonna get this game, even after watching this review. And after watching Arlo's review, I had a much wider coverage of multiple opinions and I can see this game doesn't fit my interests. My opinion is different than yours, and your opinion is different than someone else's, etc. so stop assuming that we'll like it because one person said it was good.

This is the exact same scenario as Federation Force though. Every reviewer and their mom claimed it was a great game, but when people started playing it it turned out to be the most painfully average nothing game that bombed super hard in terms of sales.

it is a different situation and we can start with that this is a Paper Mario game and not a reskin of another one and also that it was something more than a lack of substance that Metroid Federation Force had against mainly because it suffer from multiplayer only game syndrome.

I have to agree to some degree. Paper Mario: Color Splash is a really unique game. It has tons of humor, wonderful music, and scenic views. It really puts life into the game by giving us a world with such stunning graphics and different stories. It's a beautifully orchestrated 2D performance that really makes me feel like they pushed the Wii U to its very limits, which would make sense. It's only natural that the paper plumber should have a warm welcome back onto the console screen after his escapades on the 3DS.
But as beautiful as this game is, and as much as I love it, there are major flaws in the game. For one thing, the battle mechanics were very annoying, having to go through the whole song and dance of selecting a card, painting it, flicking it, waiting, and repeat. Collecting coins was fun, but their soul purpose is to buy MORE cards. Also, I didn't like how there were only Toads to talk to the entire game. One of the things that made PM and PMTTYD so unique was its vast cast of interesting characters. Color Splash's MPCs are all Toads. Another thing that has really bugged me since Super Paper Mario is the "need" for a guide. What do I mean by that, you ask? I mean the story providing you a guide that sticks with you for the entire story. In SPP, it was Tippi (or Tiptron, but Tiptron is optional). In PMSS, it was Kersti. And in Color Splash, it's Huey. Now don't get me wrong, I love Huey. He has a positive and happy-go-lucky attitude that warms the story the way Tippi or Kersti never could. But I feel like one of the reasons Paper Mario and Paper Mario: TTYD succeeded so well was the concept of partners. I remember the excitement I had when I got a new friend to tag along with me to stop certain peril. Heck, in TTYD, they up the anty by throwing in an optional partner for you to get if you are willing to go on the sidequest to get her. But characters like Koops, Admiral Bombery, Goombario, Bow, Bombette, that Yoshi you get at the Glitz Pit, and Vivian are some of my favorite characters of the Paper Mario universe, and those are just the ones I know about. I'm currently playing the 64's Paper Mario right now for the first time, so I'll find out more later, but the partners in those games made it a lot more fun. I feel like the later Paper Mario games just didn't capture that same gratification as its predecesors did. And finally, the bosses. I haven't gotten too far into Color Splash, but from what I know about the game, it features the Kooplings as the primary bosses that stand in the way of you and a Big Paint Star (which don't even get me started on how they are basically smaller versions of a Grand Shrine Sprite). In the old games, they had very unique bosses, each having their own unique persona and reason for being evil. The Kooplings, as classic as they are, are, well...not as unique. If anything, I'd dare say that the Kooplings are only used when the developers can't think of anything original. They are the boss version of goombas, stand-ins that have been around for a REALLY long time. The game thinks that they are so disposable that they literally give you cards that are specifically designed to help you win the fight. The most you ever had to go out of your way outside of battle to defeat an enemy in TTYD was when you had to get Yoshi in the Glitz Pit to defeat the Iron Bodders or something like that. Most of PM and TTYD leave the matter of strategy in your hands, and while you could argue that the Crystal Stars or the Star Spirits act like the Thing cards, I would argue that you are wrong since Thing cards disappear when you use them, whereas Star Spirits and Crystal Stars are rechargable and are not things you have to buy or collect again. But back to the Kooplings, I feel like they could have given the bosses more thought and creativity. I think in a world as colorful as this there should at least be colorful characters to match, right?
Well, that's my love rant for Color Splash. I really love the game. I really WANT to love the game. But there are just undeniable things about Color Splash that really urke me sometimes. It's still the most beautifully made game on the Wii U, and I can't wait to see more of it! :D
