The biggest compliment I've ever had as a drummer was from a guitarist who said he loved playing with me because I always found a musical way to signal the changes.
I'd add confident playing to the list. Which is related to conducting a band and knowing the song, as in really knowing the song. It sounds obvious, but I see many players who are unsure of where the changes are and thus never play with much confidence.
Agree the tuning part and there are many ways to tune and they make a huge difference. Funny story I was jamming with some youngsters and the guitarist had left his tuning device at home , so I suggested he tune the guitar to itself 😂😂 and had to show him how, 😊 I found it quite funny
the 4 lugs around the snare wires could be left in a lower pitch, than the rest 6 though. bending the rim into the snarebeds is not good in my experience
I didn't get that at the end, you're horsed? I hope you feel better soon man!, I started playing the drums exactly 2 months ago and you've been a joy to watch since I found the channel
You did great Nate, thanks again for being my go too drum channel. I would still love to see a deep dive on improvising and really what's going on. ( Jazz and Avant Garde ) Explore players and what they're doing maybe. Christian llilinger and tyshawn. Some interesting players out there. Would love to see an interview with tyshawn too. Loved the interview with Chris turner. Being a rock climbing drummer I enjoyed that. I think you would be good at climbing. Keep it up. ❤
Hey Nate! I don’t know if you’ve covered this topic but, I wonder, how to break away from the “gospel chop”, and transition into a more legato-ic or perhaps “modern jazz-chops” (at least that’s the way I perceived it) kind of playing? Are there any guys that I could listen to, in order to get into that realm?
There’s something I’ve not really heard people talk about, and it’s that tom tunings that sound “good” (from my ears at least) are often so mushy in stick feel that it becomes really difficult to diddle cleanly and it affects my flow. Does anyone have tips on finding the balance here?
Dude, every time you said 'wee', I wanted to hear a bagpipes sound effect instead of Nintendo music. Granted, the Wii theme is more popular, but you legit look like you could be a Scotsman!
Never record yourself and look at it in a DAW... You'll realize very quickly how much you suck. Also... you can't be pro until you play with pro's. Each have their own demands and being able to figure it all out, so you get called back is a skill unto its own. The session guys I would argue, are head and shoulders more skilled than your favorite drummer who plays the same thing every night over years in the same band. There is some kind of pressure being handed a dozen charts and told you play that tonight.
The "hand gestures" are indicating the quarter note, which is the essence of the beat. Try conducting a band according to the notes they play at 180 bpm. Whose notes would you be conducting from, because the instruments/vocals aren't playing in unison?
How would a drummer address his daughters? - Anna one, Anna two.
Nice one….. Nice two
How would you call a drummer without a girlfriend? - Homeless
Good one!😂
I lol’d

So glad you added the last one! Good drummers make songs and arrangements work 😊
One of my favorite drum channels

Nice flow example at 9:45 there... very groovy shuffle Nate!
This was awesome and part of the reason I switched from electronic drums to acoustic with silent heads. I knew instinctively it was holding me back.

i think conducting a band should be done by the notes you play not by the hand gestures
