Windows 11’s July 2024 security update (KB5040442) is causing a major issue. After Windows update, users are asked to enter their Bitlocker recovery key after the PC reboots.

@@Britec09Hello Brian, I hope all is well with you. I am in need of your help. Due to a lightning strike. My mom's computer got wiped out. I have a new motherboard and the purchase on eBay was supposed to be new and unused and included everything as if it was purchased unopened. Upon inspection the motherboard did not come with everything the most important part was the I/O shield. An extensive search on eBay revealed no exact matches except one, it is a computer store in Berlin, Germany. That's perfect the only problem is they don't ship to the USA. IF you are willing to help me what I would need is for you to order it and then ship it to me here in the USA. This is to restore my mom's desktop computer. I can explain more if needed. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

To get your bitlocker key BEFORE something happens and you run a local account, start a command prompt in Admin mode and execute:
    "manage-bde -protectors -get "
Replace "" with the actual drive you want to get the key for, usually C:, but once for each drive that's encrypted.
Then print that data on paper and/or store it on a USB stick that you put a literal padlock on.
If you print it, make sure you use a good font that ensures that "l" and "1" looks different as well as "0" and "O".

Not only should you have a printed copy of your BitLocker key, but I would suggest suspending bit locker before every update and resuming it after the update completes and the computer reboots successfully.
Better yet, don't enable BitLocker unless you actually need it. If you have a desktop computer for instance, why enable it in the first place? What are the odds you're going to lose your desktop computer? Were that someone's going to break into your house and steal just the HDD and not the entire computer?

@@Bookstorewalla I agree about not upgrading to Windows 11, but Bitlocker is also available on Windows 10 pro. I personally don't think it makes sense for a desktop computer that you use at home, but it's a good precaution for a laptop that you take with you on trips.

If one gets that far, might as well create a local admin account, with a password, and then open the bitlocker applet, and save the key directly to a file or USB drive ( certain drive types alter the options that is shown ).. With this approach, you can save multiple keys to the usb flash drive, and you can, when in recovery, just select the USB drive, and Windows will find the right file on its own and unlock the drive.
And there's nothing stopping a user from saving the file to two flash drives; keep one in a safe place, and the second on a flash drive kept with your regular keys, for example.
The alternative is to just take a picture of the key using the command prompt and mange-bde -get and leave the picture on your phone.. It's not as convenient when one needs to type in the 48 characters needed. Most people start to have issues getting 8 characters entered correctly; 48 is an actual achievement. Me, I prefer to save the files to a UNIQUE looking flash drive ( a flash drive for important stuff )

Of course, should you manage to miraculously get it right, you will often not be through yet, but have to do another one like it... and if you fail, you start all over.

This problem isn't caused by people not knowing what bitlocker is. it's caused by them having never even heard of bitlocker until a windows update screwed up their computer. Micorsoft needs to quit with the problematic updates. They have been issuing faulty updates so often over the last 4 to 6 months users are beginning to think they are doing it intentionally. That's bad because it will drive both OS and computer sales down.

  • @willrsan

You can find the recovery key by right clicking on the drive that is encrypted and select 'manage bitlocker' from there you will be able to retrieve the key, print it or save to a usb stick. If you do not see 'manage bitlocker' then your drive is not encrypted. I was able to do this on an external drive that had been bitlockered. I assume this will work on a machines boot drive. This is something you can only do if you have access to the computer, best get the recovery key just in case.

I was met with this screen on my recently purchased Dell laptop today. Mildly infuriating to say the least but following this video I did manage to get my recovery key from my microsoft account and get in to MY computer again, so thanks Britec for the info. you mention that you can turn off Bitlocker once back in windows but.. I see no option to disable Bitlocker :/ and googling this seems to suggest a method via computer management and local users and group.. but guess what? No local user and group setting shows.
So it looks like either Dell or MS have 'helpfully' enabled this by default because I sure as heck didn't enable bitlocker. I'm reasonably tech savvy but this one had me stumped for a while..

I built a new Windows 11 machine yesterday and although it is only a gaming machine I still did not want the potential hassles with bit locker (and windows Hello as well for that matter). I knew I had it all disabled via the user interface but it was good to go to the command prompt and get confirmation. I have all updates as of a few hours ago, everything is fine and I have paused updates for the 5 weeks. That said, for the upcoming re-built of my very old machine that has my proper personal stuff on it, I think I am going to go to Linux. Thanks M$ for enabling the feature without my knowledge BECAUSE SECURITY IS FIRST. And so Windows 11 is so bloated that it can barely open File Explorer, there is no dark mode in Windows Tools (formerly Windows Administrative Tools), i.e. it is but with a mixture of light mode (it works normally in Windows 10). Even if we go from these Windows Tools to the C: drive, we can run the old file explorer from the address bar, which was known in Windows 10. There is also a long way to go until Windows 11 becomes "perfect", because with each update it gets worse.

But the CrowdStrike code handling those files should probably have had a few more validation checks before using such a file with bad contents.

This is why I hate upgrading my current Windows OS, to a newer version on the same machine. My solution is always buy a new machine - instead of screwing it up with a new OS version. For a long time, I stuck with a Windows 95 / MS-DOS ( which I still have and maintain functioning ), and I waited a long time, then upgraded to Windows XP on a new machine. Then later again I waited...... and upgraded to Windows 7 on a new machine. Then I waited again, and upgraded to Windows 10 on a new machine. I even bought a second Windows 10 computer because the first Windows 10 that I got was a gaming computer ( its a monster ). I literally wait to upgrade to a new computer with a new version of Windows, because of all the stupid problems that every Windows OS has. I keep all my old computers that I can maintain functioning. It looks like I will be doing the wait game again.....until I upgrade to a newer version of Windows - NOT Windows 11, again with a new machine. In the mean time, I am investigating Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Red Hat, and another Unix flavor called FreeBSD, that all will use USB bootable flashdrives or hard drive based OSes on my computers that can run them ( I own 6 machines ). I used to have an old version of Red Hat 8 shared with my old Windows 95 via hard drive disk trays. It will most likely be that I will use Linux Mint for my older computers, and perhaps Ubuntu or newer versions of Red Hat for my Windows 10 computers, and depending on other things ( possibly ) FreeBSD. I would like to try FreeBSD and compare it with Linux as how it works as an OS.

I have a bitlocked disk, but the system don't ask me to enter the Bitlocker recovery key after the PC reboots. So what is the real problem? Is it about a more recent update, a new KBxxxxxxx whatever?
