- If your computer asks for your BitLocker recovery key, this video will help you find it. BitLocker encrypts your hard drive to protect your data, but sometimes it gets a little unhappy and needs a recovery key to decrypt the drive. Fortunately there are a number of places you might be able to find this key if you haven't got it to hand.

The manage-bde command is a preventative measure to make sure you have a copy of your key *before* you get locked out. If you're already locked out of your drive it won't work and you will need to use one of the other methods in the video to find your key.
what if its not giving me the password
@@flixhyper1491 if your drive is unlocked and you still don't see a password then it's possible your drive was encrypted without creating a recovery key. You ought to be able to create one of your own with "manage-bde -protectors -add C: -rp", replacing C with the appropriate drive letter.
@@ProTechShow i have the recovery key and it gets me past the Bitlocker Blue screen and I continue it unlocks then says Automatic Repair and I can shut down or advance options if I shut down when I turn back on it says preparing automatic repair and brings me right back to bitlocker recovery key screen again. There is nothing else attached to this surface pro except USB mouse- suggestions?

Thank you for this! I have a 72yr old father who loves being on his laptop. He got this bitlocker screen and had no idea what to do cause of course Microsoft doesn’t prepare you for these occurrences. Anyway, I was able to use this video to solve the issue and recover his key from the MS account as instructed within minutes so thank you from me and my father.

Microsoft need to be better in this area. It is very difficult for layman to fix this issue. This may be good enough warning to shift to linux.

I literally just want to personally thank you. For explaining this in simple terms. I spent hours trying to open my laptop and it told me there was no recovery key with my account, unbeknownst to me an old college microsoft account I used on my laptop before had the recovery key. I was confused on where to retrieve the information even after reading multiple times but the way you explained it fully and easily helped me retrieve it and all my data. Thank you kind stranger!!

Hi! Was your old account still active? I’m currently having the same issue right now and I suspect it might be in one of my old accounts that I’ve used in the past on my computer. Only thing is that this account has been blocked, but it may still exist…
Just wanted to support the pro tech show because nothing else worked for me and this man explained things beautifully! The donation I’m sending is literally nothing in comparison to the money I would have spent trying to fix this and lose all my data. (This is after watching multiple videos, self help on Microsoft, long phone calls with their support center, trying to find an in person store) they told me I would have to get a USB and clear all my data and download windows what a headache!! & all I really needed was further explanation to problem solve accessing my recovery key on an old student email. From the past one month I have been searching for solutions to find out my recovery key over the spit locker. I saw several videos in order to bypass this route it's a route, but unfortunately none of them were as helpful as your video was. You are a legend. I was working on my bachelor thesis and i was ready to give it all up until I came across your video. I tried to watch videos on ways to retrieve the recovery key but it did not work on my laptop. Very useful! Some time ago I was helping my dad recover from the same issue - and luckily I had printed the recovery key when I first set up the device for him. But while troubleshooting I first learned about Microsoft backing up the key to the cloud. And I was speechless, it was kind of a surprise to learn that the key to your precious and private data is stored at some big tech datacenter automatically. But seeing how BitLocker is used in the coorporate setting, then it actually makes sense.

My initial reaction was similar - how dare they assume I want them to take a copy of the key to my data and store it in a MS account! Then I realised that by default on a home PC anyone with access to the MS account could just log into the computer anyway so it's kind of moot. Still feels like they ought to ask... or at least tell you upfront.

My wife went to 2 computer places for help and was told her laptop needed to be reset because her microsoft account kept saying it did not have her bitlocker recovery key. For Azure, if you lose the key and it was not backed up, the microsoft link won't work. The only other thing you can do is try to use the recovery key ID to find the key itself in Azure under a different serial number. This is not well understood by Azure support and requires multiple levels of support if it is indeed possible. The lesson learned here is that encryption is a double edged sword. If you don't back up the key and you get this screen, you may as well throw the machine in the river, you aren't getting in.
Not so fast. There is software that can retrieve the recovery key, not always, but often. Several forensic software. And there is PC-3000 Data Extractor device that can discover it. Finally, you can crack the Bitlocker password, but not the key.
Watched your video and was able to locate my key through the Microsoft account. I had to enter the key twice before it came on. When it did come on, it was installing updates. As soon as the updates installed, my computer came on like always. Thank you so much!

I had no BitLocker enabled before. This happened after I connected my old laptop SSD to a new Laptop with TPM2.0. I could login two times without blue screen. I noticed BitLocker icon on my drive but didn’t care much as the padlock was open. In the third time it gave this blue screen. Nothing worked, no key was in the Microsoft account as well.
When restoring hardware configuration (Disk Drives) I tried removing the laptop battery and tried putting back the HDDs and it did work!! I could login without entering any key

I have watched so many videos today in an attempt to get into my computer without my BitLocker key (that I didn't know I had) but your's was the first to suggest going into a SCHOOL account to check for a key. That was it!
I have been attempting to troubleshoot this issue on and off for the last 6 months and not had gotten anywhere. I've tried all of the options you've suggested but when I look at all of my devices on my account only one doesn't have any bitlocker recovery key. I do have the recovery id. But for some reason I can't find the recovery key for my Surface pro 4. I've made a media disk and a surface firmware disk drive. I even have two recovery disks and it still brings me to either pushing the windows key UEFI or the Bitlocker recovery key screen. And it won't go past those screens. I've tried to do it from my desktop and other laptop. And I still can't find it under the command prompt. I have ordered a new Windows 10 pro OEM operating software disk to see if it will wipe out the issues.

Excellent explanation, well done. Quick comment - Windows 10/11 only automatically turns on BitLocker if you sign in with your work or school, or personal Microsoft account. So, if the customer signs in with a local account it won't automatically activate BitLocker. The customer can manually turn it on, of course, in the Manage BitLocker tool. I happen to think BitLocker is a good thing, of course, for the reasons you clearly laid out at the beginning of your video. :-)
Thanks. There seem to be other scenarios where it gets enabled as well. Although they say it doesn't get enabled automatically for local accounts, I have observed it getting enabled automatically when using local accounts where a Microsoft account was subsequently added within the Windows user profile (i.e. saved in the settings app for logging in to applications, but not used to log in to Windows itself). I haven't tested it, but I assume the addition of the Microsoft account within the local user profile was the trigger in that case.
Given how difficult they're making it to sign in to Home edition devices running 11 without a Microsoft account I think it's going to become difficult to avoid! Personally, I always ensure BitLocker enabled; but most people don't know it even exists and MS could do a much better job of warning them. There have been quite a few people who have messaged me about second-hand devices where they have no idea whose account the key was stored in. A popup any time a new user signs in to explain that the drive is unencrypted and they need to keep a copy of the key somewhere would avoid a lot of problems.
Fantastic help. Having found that the key for my laptop was not stored on my microsoft account and being close to wiping all my data i found this clip and after one last restart the Bitlocker screen magically disappeared and I was able to locate the key and make a note of it for future reference. Something of a relief.

Glad it helped. There are video chapters so you can instantly skip to the section you want, but I prefer to explain why it's happening rather than jumping to "click this button" because the next time you might not be as lucky and the button might not work. It's always better to understand what's happening - in this case you can make sure your key is backed up when you change your account or computer in the future. "Teach a man to fish" as they say.

I have just PowerShell to disable the encryption, however the keyprotector is still on. When I did the next step suggested by the youtube video, it stated that I couldn't disable bitlocker becaused the drive was locked.
I have no idea what to do next, and I'm not sure what to google
You can't disable BitLocker or back up your key without unlocking the drive first. The encryption would be pointless if anyone could just turn it off. Try the methods shown in the video to see if you can find the key, then you will be able to do what you want with it.
Hello, great information! I have a more specific question, after I called the cmd prompt to Acitvate the Administrators in the local group saying Yes ! Then this Bitlocker message came asking for the key and when I tried to type it in the keyboard?, it does not type letters , it only accepts numbers... what's going on? Thanks for your time
The BitLocker recovery key is a long string of numbers. There are no letters in it.
Perhaps you were typing the key ID instead of the key itself? The ID contains letters, but the key doesn't.
