Unbeknownst to you on Windows 10/11, your hard drive may be encrypted with BitLocker even though you didn’t activate it. At some future system update you would be prompted for the BitLocker security key. Without this key, you’d lose access to all your Data! Let’s make sure you’re not surprised like I was!
This is a comprehensive tutorial explaining all aspects of BitLocker recovery on your PC. We help you determine if it is active, then demonstrate 3 different ways to recover your key. We further explain the Platform Configuration Register (PCR) information stored in the Trusted Protective Module (TPM). Finally a review of the BIOS configuration related to the TPM is presented.

Below is aggregated feed-back & recommendations based on subscribers & our experience.
    **********************************************************************
#1 Make sure you have a current local backup of all data & a cloud backup. Ideally you have file history backup turned on also.
    ****Overall Advice:****
There is no good answer to this, except maybe move to a different operating system. You can use info in the video disable BitLocker, but some subsequent event may still activate it on your system. My best advice is to get a MS outlook account & use it for your login. Activate bitlocker and store the key. Why? A known state for the computer is better than an unknown state. If you don't log into Windows with a MS account, you could inadvertently be using a MS service and MS will activate Bitlocker. At that point you won't know where the key is located. Crazy hugh? Thank you MS. In theory using a local account could (not guaranteed ) keep BitLocker off the computer.
****What you need to know about a MS account:****
You may have a Microsoft (MS) account & not know it. If you signed up for any cloud services (Like Teams) with MS you would have linked a MS account or if your work/school linked you to any cloud based services this would have activated Azure AD tied to a MS account. This account could hold your key. Please take this seriously & check your system to see if Bitlocker is activated. It will only take one system update, hardware change, or bios update to activate this potential blue screen of death on your computer.
Your computer could be tied to someone else that used a MS account on the computer. Or any other MS account service. Normally MS doesn't allow Bitlocker to become activated unless the OS has used a MS account on the computer in some way. Please review if possibly someone else used a MS account on your computer.

****BitLocker Blue Screen of death...things you can try:****
    1. In BIOS go to security disable secure boot and restart
    2. At Bitlocker recovery screen press escape then skip drive
    2.1 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
    - Select System Restore
    2.2 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
    - Select Go Back to previous build
    2.3 Select Troubleshoot
    - Select Reset PC & Keep Files
    2.4 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
    - Select System Image Recovery (if you have one...may need to insert Bootable media to complete)
****Have BitLocker Key but auto repair keeps looping...Possible Solution:****
manage-bde is the command for managing Bitlocker Drive Encryption
Change your drive letter below if it is not C:
    1. Let it loop....At the recovery screen, prese "Esc" for more recovery options
    2. Press skip drive on next screen
    3. Select Troubleshoot
    4. Select Advanced Options
    5. Select Command Prompt
    6. Check Drive Status type inside the quotes "Manage-bde -status c:"
    - Should indicate protection status is on
    7. Type "Manage-bde -unlock c: -rp 123456-789123-456789-123456-789123-456789-123456-789123"
    - Should indicate drive is unlocked
    8. Type "Manage-bde -protectors -disable c:" to disable BitLocker
    - You should be able to reboot the drive without Bitlocker
    @CraftsBayou
@CyberMedics but what about when you have the correct key it tries to diagnose and then do an auto repair that keeps looping?
    @carinyaenterprise9674
@CyberMedics Had the same problem, Could not even do the reinstallation. Luckily I could do a reinstall via ASUS - lost all data though. Was about to get M365 but no - will look for other options now. Not a cent towards MS from me. Thanks for the video, though. It helped me to understand it all some more. Question: If I switch off the device encryption you mention at 3:42 will it get permanently rid of the need to put the key in?

"Press SHIFT-F10 or hit 'repair' in from the Windows installation to open up the command line, then execute the diskpart command and delete the partition, e.g.: list disk, select disk 0 or any other identifying the correct disk, list partition, select partition 1, or the encrypted one , in case there are multiple partitions, then delete partition override.
You can then resume the install procedure normally to repartition and format the drive."

    MS What is TPM?
    support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/what-is-tpm-705f241d-025d-4470-80c5-4feeb24fa1ee
From Microsoft: TPM is used to improve the security of your PC. It's used by services like BitLocker drive encryption, Windows Hello, and others, to securely create and store cryptographic keys, and to confirm that the operating system and firmware on your device are what they're supposed to be, and haven't been tampered with.

In one of your previous clips you said they tpm will give you extra safety. I have one drive encrypted without tpm and it says that I don't have tpm 1.2 enabled. Went to bios (asus) and I had the discrete tpm option enabled. The other option is ftpm and when selected it prompts me a message about 2.0 amd agesa. By enabling this will get the 1.2 in windows? Will there be any compatibility issues? I am on win 10

    learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/information-protection/tpm/trusted-platform-module-overview
Here is my conclusion from reviewing this. FTPM enabled will give you the best chance of having the highest level of TPM protection on an Window 10 computer. This allows the manufacturer to upgrade BIOS firmware TPM. Beginning with Windows 10, version 1511, TPM 1.2 and 2.0 are supported.
Short answer: I believe enabling the FTPM will give you a minimum of TPM 1.2. There may be a BIOS update that would allow you to run TPM 2.0. Please validate all your Bitlocker keys, because any of these changes could activate the Bitlocker Key recovery.
@CyberMedics thanks for your kindness. do you recommend removing the recovery key for better safety? (eg I don't think i will ever forget my password and I find it pointless having a recovery key when it could decrease the safety)

Bitlocker encryption is implemented in conjunction with TPM to enhance the security of your computer. It is a layer of protection at the hardware level that protects against cyber attacks. I don't recommend turning it off.

This was a great video! I really don’t mind Bitlocker, but I don’t like how it is set up. My kid has had two different Dell computers that ended up locking him out with Bitlocker. In neither case did he intend to set it up. But in the first case, we actually had to send it back to the manufacturer. No process should be so lacking in redundancies as to require that. I’m manually turning it off every PC I have as soon as I get home.

I have a question if you don't mind. If I have one partition (it isn't the windows partition) encrypted with the bitlocker on 1.2 TPM. With the HDD removed from computer is there any chance someone could extract the recovery key by taking a snapshot of the disk? I think I've seen something about it in one of your clips but not sure if that would work in this particular scenario.

    • @CyberMedics

Thanks for commenting and subscribing. In order to unencrypt the drive, someone would have of hacked the Bitlocker encryption algorithm. This is highly unlikely in the near term. They will not recover the key from the drive. The key can only be displayed in the OS if the drive is authenticated (i.e. logged into the OS). Taking the drive out of the system will not allow someone to find the Bitlocker key. Thanks for commenting & subscribing. Please share our content with others.

So when you activate your OEM Laptop or Tower System (1st time OOBE activation) ... Activate with a MS Account? Thus avoiding this "BTL Blue Screen" KEY Recovery issue?
Alot of UTube Techies advising to AVOID the MS Account activation and just create a "Local User" account.
So which option do you suggest?

    • @CyberMedics
      @CyberMedics  5 месяцев назад

Most hard core techies would advocate just creating a local account & thus potentially avoiding the whole potential BitLocker nightmare. While this might work, I encourage you to read through the many comments on this video, where users said they never created or thought they had a Microsoft account and were still hit by BitLocker.
The concept of Bitlocker is good (data at rest is protected), but the way MS has implemented it is poor! I decided to create the MS account, and secure my BitLocker key. It is a known state. BitLocker is active ...and I have the key. I further disabled the windows hello pin, secured my MS account with a biometric HW key. This forces the computer to have to authenticate the key w/fingerprint to unlock the drive/computer system. Pretty cool I think, but don't use YubiKey's bio key (inferior implementation). Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/SKDkTg3YNeU/видео.htmlsi=Lt5R2Num_5ncuI-z Would appreciate you viewing & commenting on the video.

    • @CyberMedics
      @CyberMedics  Год назад

Some people log in with a local account and thinks this avoids the possibility of Bitlocker activation. This will work, unless you log into a Microsoft service with an account...then there is the possibility that Bitlocker will unexpectedly lock the computer. Supposedly they are supposed to store the key on that account, but numerous viewers have commented this is not the case. If you experience something different, please let us know. thanks for commenting & subscribing.

As I understand it each recovery key is unique to each drive. If you have access to the MS account that was logged into, when the drive was encrypted, then you can use that key to recover the data. None of them worked on my "Surface laptop 3", I cannot format my C: because I have important files in it and the microsoft account that has the bitlocker key is already deleted (because it is an university account and I was graduated years ago). Like you said I never know my disk is encrypted and when will it be activated. Hence I did not save the password or recovery key. Can you please help me with this? What should I do or who should I go for help? I called microsoft already and they say they cant do anything.

I Believe by control panel it's talking about the settings menu. In the video we demonstrated how you could go into the settings and determine whether BitLocker was on your drive and then from there you could turn it off. You should be able to do that. In addition to that any Lock Drive normally has the BitLocker password recovery key tied to a Microsoft account. We also demonstrated how to log into that Microsoft account and get the key. Have not run across this scenario. Things you can try:
      1. In BIOS go to security disable secure boot and restart

      2.1 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
      - Select System Restore

Apologize for the delay in researching this. I think the following steps would fix the problem.
****Have BitLocker Key but auto repair keeps looping...Possible Solution:****
manage-bde is the command for managing Bitlocker Drive Encryption
Change your drive letter below if it is not C:
      1. Let it loop....At the BitLocker recovery screen, prese "Esc" for more recovery options
      2. Press skip drive on next screen
      3. Select Troubleshoot
      4. Select Advanced Options
      5. Select Command Prompt
      6. Check Drive Status type inside the quotes "Manage-bde -status c:"
      - Should indicate protection status is on
      7. Type "Manage-bde -unlock c: -rp 123456-789123-456789-123456-789123-456789-123456-789123"
      - Should indicate drive is unlocked
      8. Type "Manage-bde -protectors -disable c:" to disable BitLocker
      - You should be able to reboot the drive without Bitlocker

@@carinyaenterprise9674 Short answer: Yes Longer answer:
      ****Overall Advice:****
There is no good answer to this, except maybe move to a different operating system. You can use info in the video disable BitLocker, but some subsequent event may still activate it on your system. My best advice is to get a MS outlook account & use it for your login. Activate bitlocker and store the key. Why? A known state for the computer is better than an unknown state. If you don't log into Windows with a MS account, you could inadvertently be using a MS service and MS will activate Bitlocker. At that point you won't know where the key is located. Crazy hugh? Thank you MS. In theory using a local account could (not guaranteed) keep BitLocker off the computer.

Unfortunately for me, after upgrading my system from windows 10 to windows 11, a bios updates was also installed with the updates. I got the bitlocker blue screen. My Microsoft account shows the laptop in my profile. However, it shows that device as not having bitlocker setup on that system. So, there is no key for me to use to unlock my system. Microsoft technical support says there is nothing they can do. Because it is was windows 10 home upgraded to windows 11 Home that should mean the key is stored on the device in the TPM. Any advice on TPM sniffing, or any videos you can recommend to help me find my key?

@CyberMedics There is no other MS account. That account was set up day one, and is the only account used on that system and MS apps. My account shows the laptop, and the identifier codes match. However, the MS account says bitlocker was not setup on that drive. It is obviously set up on the drive, it just didn't report the key to my MS account. It could have been an issue that occurred at setup, and MS never ran a check, or updated the bitlocker key. I just don't know.

    • @aubreybrackett7653
      @aubreybrackett7653 12 дней назад +1

@CyberMedics With it being a Windows Home system and a Lenovo system, Lenovo (and Dell) sets up the bitlocker on their systems at the factory for Home and Pro Editions. The key is stored on the TPM. Upon setup and registering your MS account, it is supposed to report the key to your MS account. For me, it appears to have not reported that key to MS. There is a vulnerability on some machines that allows you to intercept the bitlocker key. With what I have read about this vulnerability, upon power up, the TPM sends the key to the CPU to verify the drive. During this process, the data is unencrypted. So, you can connect a device on the connection at the TPM and sniff out the key.

Anything can trigger the Trusted Platform Module to invoke the Bitlocker security key....a windows update, bios update, a new user with a Microsoft account. Two things are a high probability: Something updated triggered it & Somehow the system believes there is a Microsoft account tied to the machine. In my case it was a BIOS update.
      Things you can try
      1. In BIOS go to security disable secure boot and restart
      2. At Bitlocker recovery screen press escape then skip drive
      2.1 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
      - Select System Restore
      2.2 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
      - Select Go Back to previous build
      2.3 Select Troubleshoot
      - Select Reset PC & Keep Files
      2.4 Troubleshoot/Advanced Options
      - Select System Image Recovery (if you have one...may need to insert bootable media to complete)
Any type of online account with Microsoft could have triggered storage of the key. I all above fails, try to deduce any accounts that were used on the machine with Microsoft services. You may find the key stored on one of these accounts. Please update us so we can help others. Thanks for commenting & subscribing.

    Some questions:
    1. Is it possible the key is to be found in something called Azure account? Where do I find it?
    2. I am still able to login and get to the taskmanager, but the screen keeps flashing black and sometimes freezes, sometimes I can get task manager to work sometimes not. I cannot run in Safe Mode anymore, since it asks for the Bitlocker Key. This is extremely frustating. Is there a way I can get from TaskManager into the CMD to check the key still locally? And stop the screen from flashing black?
    3. Can a rollback of windows update work? Or is it better to reset BIOS? Idk?

I checked it again a few days later and the key is there... wtf?... better yet the key is there for the past two years ... then why did it give the error.
I'm hoping that somehow this is also true for the locked drive. I just need to find the right account.
      Maybe contact help center?

In some cases under the free plan when the data limit is reached people are losing their data completely. We are thinking of doing a video just to highlight Microsoft's complete disregard of user's data/lives!
If you have a bitlocker key and are having trouble entering that, we just released a video: ruclips.net/video/mgZ7wooKKtM/видео.htmlsi=cmBllA8v4BrUpOtJ

We do have some additional information in the video description. I need to pin all the help suggestions into one comment. Account could be from you belonging to a university, could be someone who set up your account, could be from signing up for some Microsoft service like teams....Any account association with Microsoft that is used on the computer system can wind up being where the bitlocker key is stored. If you signed up for any cloud services (Like Teams) with MS you would have linked a MS account or if your work/school linked you to any cloud based services this would have activated Azure AD tied to a MS account. This account could hold your key. Please take this seriously & check your system to see if Bitlocker is activated. Hello sir pls help! Its been five days and an going crazy. I am not tech savvy at all but I was forced to learn the hard way when I accidentally right clicked my biggest folder on desktop while trying to delete a crappy folder from hell!
Now all my hard work from last year gone under a flash cos I used permanently delete function and it can't be found in recycle or backed up because Microsoft won't let be back up big chunks of files at once so I turned off desktop folder.
Prior to this I just bought the acer swift x Windows 10 without knowing how it works. First it told me to open Microsoft account wch I did and then next it asked me to upgrade to Windows 11 wch I did . Also sometimes during shutdown it asked me to upgrade and restart wch I normally do. All this while, I only used it to save my dji vidoes and pictures and the ones shot on my phone jst to make space since it's a 1tb storage.
Now since I deleted this folder, I have to go to the drive I deleted it frm wch is drive C and saw it was bitlocker enabled but open while there is a strange drive D I didn't create wch is bitlocker enabled and locked. I went to my settings and I saw device encryption is turned on
And there is option to recover key but not to turn it off. When I go to this D drive to unlock it, it says 'load key from USB drive' So I went bk to link and followed Microsoft account and got the key wch I saved on an external drive E. But when I open this in drive E there is no option to use it or so I thought
Now my question and curiosity is why was that drive D created in the first place and why was it locked and C drive open? What is in it? I saw it is a 0.99tb storage. Could it contain the folders i am trying to recover. I have tried using Windows file recovery but it keeps saying system cannot find the folder I am looking for.
Please help sir. This mess is too much for me. My major aim is to recover my deleted folder as it holds all the work did last year. Please you suggestions or help will be very appreciated 🙏
Sorry for the long read. I needed to make myself clear

The first thing I would do is disable bitlocker from the system! Another way for Microsoft to control you like the government is trying to do. This is why if your computer is very old, microsoft says you can't install windows 11 even though you can. It just doesn't have the TPM chip. Fk micorosft!

Great feedback. Thanks for commenting & subscribing. If you only log in with a local account that is probably a safe method. Some people are logging in with a MS account or MS is associating their login in with a MS service and automatically implementing bitlocker. It is insane that MS would encrypt someone's drive and not even tell them! Commenting & giving the video a thumbs up supports our efforts to help others with technology. Thank you. Prepare step 1: Get out of Windows. 😂😂😂.
The thriving community of people doing everything fighting Windows features is such a huge flag telling Windows decisions are so wrong.

You make a great point! Between there OneDrive fiasco and bitlocker…surprised there is not a class action lawsuit. Thanks for supporting the channel by commenting and giving the video a thumbs up. Please consider sharing our video.
