Why Say Anything's Boombox Scene Is Amazing

- We’ve all seen the iconic scene from the Say Anything and all the homages and parodies of it. But there’s a lot more going on in the scene than meets the eye. So much so that, beyond all the surface level references, people have kind of forgotten about what lies beneath. So what’s the story behind this classic scene?
#sayanything #inyoureyes
attacking a movie because u are desperate for view and subscribers is kind of weak
I love that he pinned your comment so we can all laugh at you
oh boo hoo. im so hurt by idiots
@@letsrevieweverything144 Well it's just funny because your comment literally makes no sense, which is why it's pinned. idiot. lmao
Met a college bound girl right after high school in 83. I was directionless, she was studious. She went to college, I went into the Air Force. We worked the long distance thing for a few years, getting together whenever we could. When we watched this movie we kept looking at each other sideways. In 1994 “In Your Eyes” became our wedding song. She’s in the other room right now and I’m waiting for he to come watch some TV with me.
That's so amazing and adorable at the same time!!! God bless you guys 🖤🖤🖤
Sweet
Awwwhhh (melt)
Thanks for sharing honestly loved this
AWWWWWWWWW!!!!❤
The scene that made all us girls fall in love with John Cusack
Nah, it’s his role as Dimitri in Anastasia.
I was a little girl and fell in love.
Yea, us guys were so lucky that he set the bar so high. Made dating so much easier lol.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was improvised.
Cusack has a knack for adding his own quirks and improvising scenes.
Such a handsome guy!
@@wolfhaven9312 No, he actually didn't want to do it.
Say Anything was the culmination of 80's teen movies. The boombox scene closed out a decade with passion. It was symbolic for a lot of reasons.
"nobody thought they belonged together" One scene that has stuck with me forever is when she says something to the effect of "everyone says this will never work" and Lloyd immediately fires back with "Do you realize that you have just described every great success story?" Something like that, my memory gets a bit spotty now and again. Still waiting for a situation where some girl says that to me and I can use his line. Ha! ; )
You didn't bring up the thing that bothers me most about how this scene is interpreted, or misinterpreted. Everyone says Lloyd is standing outside Diane"s bedroom window, but he's clearly in the park near her house. He's not trespassing and the scene is much less aggressive and stalkery in its actual context. I hate when it's used as an example of stalking and toxic relationships since I feel this film shows one of healthiest teen relationships, with Lloyd being respectful and supportive of Diane, and the two of them bringing out the best in each other.
I didn’t get around to talking about that part but I did initially. I cut that information out of the final cut so I could keep the focus on the central point. But I agree, if the scene is being talked about in the context of toxicity, then that’s way off mark.
@@EverydayTape I've seen videos about toxic tropes in romance on channels like The Take and Pop Culture Detective which includes it in a video called "Stalking for Love". IMO Edward Cullen and Lloyd Dobler should not be in the same category. I really love this movie so it annoys me that everyone thinks Lloyd was outside the window.
It's interesting that, according to the behind the scenes info you showed, they almost filmed it like that. Thank goodness they didn't because it really changes how intrusive it is. I always read his expression as angst rather than defiance. For me it's an expression of just how much pain he was feeling.
Anyway, I enjoyed your take on this film. It's nice to see someone talking about it more in depth. :)
@@janleonard3101 I'm glad you commented about this. The boombox scene is lumped in with a lot of really messed up stuff, and it's as if people haven't seen the film or remembered it incorrectly. Lloyd was actually a good and the relationship in this film really was much more healthy than a lot of adult relationships.
I’m surprised by the story about a different selection for the song. Did they already select in your eyes for the love scene in the car? I would think it the obvious choice if it had already been selected for the car scene. I mean it is just so obvious because it ties the boom box scene with the car scene to the intensity this love flows. I would love to know if anyone knows if in filming that they really just sort of came up with in your eyes for the boom box scene and if they did just sort of came up with it then how did it affect the filming of the car scene. I don’t see how one could select another song if this song had already been decided upon for either of these scenes. Yeah. I love this movie.
@@lookslikekevin There's an interview with Cameron Crowe in Entertainment Weekly where he says the song that was on his mind as he wrote the scene was “To Be A Lover” by Billy Idol. He says they tried a number of songs but "In Your Eyes" was the only one that worked for the scene.
So there you have it and I love the movie too. 😊
I think I love the scene in the car just just the tiniest bit more than this one. It was just so romantic with Lloyd shaking and In Your Eyes playing. That really got to me as a teenage girl. Edit: I completely agree with your analysis. Diane was still in love with Lloyd and he wasn't doing this to win her back or guilt her. It really was a reminder to her of what they had, and that it was worth fighting for. She just needed to be brave and stand up for the relationship with him.
MY TEACHER PERSONALLY KNEW THIS DUDE, HE WORKED WITH HIM
I saw Peter Gabriel play at Madison Square Garden Monday night Sept 18 2023. When he played this song a girl near the front row had a pretend boombox made out of cardboard and such. She handed it to Peter and he raised it over his head while the band played this song. Was a great moment (which I filmed and will post on you tube sometime in the next days).
Told “Peter in ?” And I’m told.
Ione Skye's character introduces the song earlier in the movie and asks Lloyd to listen and exclaims how beautiful the song is, that she love's it. I always thought that's why he played that particular song on a boom box. To show that he heard her and would acknowledge her. And so she would know he was out there. So, I'm really surprised they originally had another song in mind for this scene. The must have backed into the connection. Or maybe substituted the same song in the earlier scene after the fact.
I grew up in Indiana and this was always my favorite romantic movie because it wasn’t your typical Romcom. Fast forward, I ended up living across the street from this park where this scene was filmed. Your breakdown of this scene and the importance of it struck such a cord with me, especially as someone who had worked in film and tv for years. Thank you so much for expressing what I feel which I couldn’t put into words.
How nicely said 😃 And what a happy accident that you ended up living across the street from that location. With such a career, I bet ending up there felt like coming home in a way.
Great story
I always told myself I would never get married unless a John Cusack stood beneath my window with a boombox....still waiting...lol
I like that they didn't resort to the cliche of her coming down to him as he was playing it. So smart how they played this
Everyone born in the 70's knows what the "boombox Scene" means.
where exactly is he standing with the boombox? is he at the old folks home? waking up all those elderly people? I grew up seeing the references to this movie, and it made me think it was some goofy 80's flick. I finally got around to watching this and it's one of my favorite teen movies ever. It feels more like a drama than a rom com.
Such a beloved scene that became part of the story of our lives. I can't even imagine any other song than 'Your Eyes' by Peter Gabriel.
Dude your channel is so under rated! Please don’t give up you can and will break through.
Thanks for the encouragement! I’ve got a new video in the works. Coming soon.
I understand the bad things said about this these days and I'm not a fan of that type of behavior. That being said, I did a 4 year active duty in the Army Infantry and got back in 89. First thing I did back was party with my friends and whatnot. Then saw this scene at the movies and made me think about getting back with the girl I left back home, held up the boombox as kinda a joke one day. We been married for 33 years.
I think you are right on with your comments!!! This is Lloyd Doppler at his purest and not afraid to show his vulnerability to the woman he loved!!!
Thank you for checking out my video! If you like it, please give it a thumbs up and maybe check out some of my other videos too - bit.ly/3qj1HJJ - I really appreciate the support.
I think the scene and song is special for only one reason. She lost her virginity to the song in the car. And not really knowing if Lloyd was a virgin, it’s possible that they both could have lost their virginity to that song while in the car.
That’s an important scene to bring up. I had almost included it in the video. But I think you’ve got a point. I think it was Diane’s first time but I couldn’t say the same for Lloyd. But that’s just a guess
Well, she played it back too. So it was a recurring theme of the movie.
Find your channel today while trying to find this clip, you are so underrated!
Thank you! And thank you for the support. I’m working on a new video. Keep an eye out if you can.
Holy... I saw this this morning and have been thinking about it all day. At first I thought it was a bit hubristic on your part - the subtleties of the difference between reminding someone that you love them - or even that they love you (um… no) - and reminding someone that you have something together that’s unique and worth fighting for, worth committing to, is really really important. Much more than my sleep addled brain caught several hours ago. Fascinating that they didn’t know that they were going for… and then you’re pointing out why it worked - Golden. Learned something pretty awesome today. Thanks
I am the key master..
If Lloyd were to do that today, he'd be considered a stalker. He'd have to sat down and given a lecture on respecting boundaries. "Lloyd, um, you don't forcibly make a women who broke up with you listen to a song. That's creepy, son."
One of my favorite movies!
One of the best!
I want my 2 dollars...
2 dollars.....
Thank you as well for reminding me what an awesome song "Keeping the dream alive" by Münchener Freiheit is.
It’s a great song! Great soundtrack!
They shared a moment together. Listen too this song,it's a really good song. I know how he felt in that car, with emotions running wild. And too play it outside her window, standing strong and hell bent on her hearing him, they made history. This song played when they was making out,and those emotions was there when he stood alone. Tear in my eye, never too be repeated..Its 2023 now.....Boreing ! Thanks John for the memory. I mean Loyd
I wish I had thought of doing this , but no . Back then “Happy Days “ was a new show that everyone watched , and they sold these little Fonzi dolls . I would leave one now & then on the front porch of my girl friends house with a note . She probably collected nearly a dozen of them . The boom box was much cooler , I have to admit
If you never had a boom box you are not from the 80 s
Johns underrated movie The Sure Thing (1985), dont forget that one
It It wasn't for all the references to the Boombox scene i wouldn't have found this movie. Great Video man, you earned a new subscriber.
It was so good to grow up with Hughes and Cameron’s movies- they helped to shape a mild naive understanding of life- I’ve watched Say Anything probably once a year for for the past35 years.
MY TEACHER PERSONALLY KNEW THIS DUDE, HE WORKED WITH HIM
To be fair, I believe that parody in A Night at the Roxbury to be an act of rebellion as well from Doug to Steve as the former reminded the latter of their broship (bros before hoes), so in context, it's actually a lot more faithful of a homage than you gave credit for.
Love this film, however, I did not like the scene where Diane was getting dressed asking Loyd which outfit to wear. The dude was sitting on her bed...No unacceptable for a intelligent, contemporary American girl would NOT allow that even if they were just friends...NO!
Am I the only one bothered by all the picnic tables lining Diane Court's supposed driveway? You'd think they would have moved or edited them out to make it less obvious it's a park. Still a great scene, though!
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. Too much analyzing of this. Get outside, Get out of your head.
Hey Fellas FYI.....this is some Stalker shit,..... No women wants a man to stand outside their window playing lovesongs,, this only works in the Movies , men believe this type of stalker bullshit is what women want... then get friendzoned or a restraining order in real life....women do most of the pursuing,,, All men have to do is play it cool and let the women chase.... , this is how they are wired,,
I think that to ask for another fuck in the car they should have put One More Night by Phil Collins, that one by Gabriel sounds very adult for a teenage romance. Just my opinion.
And now they are using it in a frozen pizza commercial. It really irritated me because the two girls in the commercial probably had no idea where this came from.. GD commercial "directors"
My favorite movie of all time. I was 18 when this came out and saw it in the theater with a group of friends and our girlfriends.. the timing of it was clutch.
Was John Cusack and 80s Shia LeBouf? Yes or yes?
He was 80s Miles Teller.
Anyone who views this scene wrong. Just don’t get it and are either bad people with perverse ways or just clueless.
You know as much as I loved this scene the scene at the gas and sip to me was equally iconic..I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen
I LOVE YOU AND YOUR OPINIONS
Thanks! Sure glad you stumbled across my videos
It's also worth noting that the grand boombox gesture didn't work. That's not what won her back.
It’s the best EVER!!! That’s it no explanation 🙏🏻🤙🏼
If you see MacDonalds new commercial Steal my 🍟 in part the guy holds his fries over his head like John does with the boombox lol
You do this now and you are called out for stalking
I had to be the first guy ever to pull a Say anything move on a girl I liked all those years ago, to make a long story short, it's how I got my FIRST restraining order
Atta Boy!! Yessuh!!
At least now you know, right?..
Remember showing a song by Romeos Daughter I really liked to my crush who said she liked Def Leppard (both produced by Mutt Lange). I dont know if she thought it was good or terrible but she probably wasnt into me anyway.
I’ve got a few memories just like that. I love that. It really speaks to how important music becomes and how much we want to share it with the people we like.
People refer to me as the Malaysian Lloyd Globber.
Fishbone - Turn the other way
For anyone who wonders the name of 2:53 song
Thanks for this great coverage of this iconic scene Adam - I was looking for a roundup of this significant scene and you nailed it with this video
You know what's funny, I've never watched the movie, is it on streaming somewhere?
Not that I’ve been able to find. But I hope you find it. It’s really good.

Alright sir, I must now share with you an incredibly deep/powerful moment with a disclaimer if you haven't seen the film: please watch the 1988 film Running on Empty. Don't do any reconn on it, and do NOT watch any trailers or anything like that. Watch it from start to finish. I promise you, if you do that, you will find the ending, and the song that plays during the ending, to be one of the most powerful things you have ever experienced in any film. If you have seen it, then you already know, but the fact is that Running on Empty is still, to this day, one of the very best films I've ever seen, and very few people know about it. Criminal.
Actually, I have seen it. A few months back I got nostalgic for River Phoenix movies and Co checked it out for the first time. I remember the performances most of all but I do remember the ending and the song; very bittersweet but excellent.
@@EverydayTape Wonderful. I submit that the ending to that film perfectly captures how powerful a film can be when it's done right. Sidney Lumet was one of the greatest directors ever.
It's kinda funny how much the 80's glamorized this behavior given a scene like this could easily been misinterpreted done in a very creepy stalker type way.
it did feel kind of stalkerish when I saw it. especially how the songs reverb trails into the next scent. It was kind of haunting. As iconic as it is, it might be my least favorite part of the movie. Why is he standing in the park? Her house did not have a park across the street. If this is at the old folks home, why the hell is there in the middle of the night waking up all the grannies?
I played the boombox scene this morning to our VA's and explained the scene and it's importance to romance and making a stand to say what's probably been said. They loved it.
BTW, I've been the "key master" a few times in the 80's before this movie came out; this was a real thing at parties in Ca.
It’s not that amazing.
00:38 I can't believe you forgot the scene in the movie Ready Player One.
Tod I miss the 80s
Remarkable how you've failed to even mention the most powerful thing about the scene... Peter Gabriel's masterpiece "In Your Eyes". Truly one the most beautiful loves songs ever written that can bring tears to the eyes of even the most jaded.
I was wanting to share a clip about this video and came across your video! This is a great interpretation of the boombox scene!
Thank you! I enjoyed the deep dive into it. It got me to appreciate the moment even more. Let’s keep it alive. I think that’s what Cusack and Crowe would want.
Love this scene, so iconic. Try searching “say anything boombox scene wrong song.” 😂
Wrong song?
Every time I see a video about that Jacob Yerkes guy, I imagine this scene, but John Cusack has lost his mind and is running around her house playing discordant nonsense and screaming.
Straight up 80’s!! Love it!
This scene doesn’t make any sense in and of itself. I guess I have to watch the whole movie to understand it’s context. The scene and the explanation given still don’t make any sense. I will watch the movie one of these days when I have two hours to burn
gotta say it DOES feel weird out of context. I have to agree with out a back story to it, one does wonder "Why did some one follow a girl home just to play a boom box on her lawn and how is this romantic? It falls in to that category of things every one memes but no one's seen. Many of us having been to young to relate to a romance film. Its right up there with Risky Business, The Graduate, Fast Times at Rigmond High, The Breakfast Club , Flash Dance, Mommy Dearest , Clock Work Orange, Reiver Dogs, Warriers, Apocalypse Now, in that list of things that every one memes but that has zero interest to a young child of the 80s who was way more in to Star Wars, Ghostbusters, He-Man, ALF, Transformers, Ninja Turtles. We had no time for no way to relate to movies about love and kissing and stuff.
Yup....fell in love in my teens, and this music and scene still takes me back to that moment and feeling's it generated....and I smile....
Good take! You have inspired me to watch this movie again. Been an easy 25 years, so I am due ❤
Remake with Rachel McAdams would work not sure about the guys role lol
She’d do a good job. But I can’t imagine the movie being remade. At least, I hope people don’t try to remake it. It’s timeless.
@@EverydayTape Chris Evans (for the guy role)
When they were younger, sure.
I thought he played that song because it was the song playing when they were in the backseat of his car....so he played it to remind her of that night...their first time of love making....that's my opinion 🤗
The song was playing the first time they made love…when it was only them and nothing else mattered. That’s what I take from the last stand scene of playing “In Your Eyes” to her. That nothing else mattered but her
Why is "Keeping the Dream alive" playing in the back in this video? Is it part of the movie? (Sorry, haven´t seen it.)
Yes, it’s on the soundtrack. Excellent soundtrack, by the way!
@@EverydayTape Thanks! It is funny to hear that for me because this is the english version of a german bands big hit here in the late 80´s.

I love learning stuff like this, thank you
I’ve gotta go, I got a girls house to go stand in front of. Great video!
It's cause they're playing my song
How did you get the behind the scenes videos?
Those clips came from one of the featurettes on the blu ray
Lol I love the superman cutaways
So on the alternate take special feature you referenced it showed the following: for Ione Sky's shots they played Tokyo Storm Warning by Elvis Costello on set while filming. That's the song she's reacting to. On nearly all the other takes with John the song is Turn the Other Way by Fishbone, which is apparently his vote for what the song should have been. For the footage of the final take they show though the song is Simon Says the Kingpin by Fishbone. So this means Cusack was playing the cassette of the album In Your Face and for the final take just let it play instead of rewinding back since there is one song between Turn the Other Way and Simon Says the Kingpin. ruclips.net/video/_kBd8x-xSGE/видео.htmlm34s
Other trivia: the song To Be a Lover by Billy Idol inspired the scene in the first place and Cameron Crowe thought he may have written in the script that it was the song Lloyd was playing. However in the shooting script dated 1/18/88 both the car scene and the boombox scene mention "Emotional Love" by Crowe's then wife Nancy Wilson. I can't find that song online unless it became "All For Love" which did make the soundtrack, just not in those scenes.
After it was filmed they couldn't figure out what the song should be for the longest time until Crowe was re-listening to a mixed tape made for his wedding and In Your Eyes was on it.
Getting Peter Gabriel to let them use it is another story and worth Googling.
Don't quit your day job
I never saw this
