- So, whenever people find out I am an opera singer, its inevitable they mention Nightwish. And this time is no different. you guys requested it... I love it ( I tell the story why in this video as well) - Let's do this. The its always amazing how well this band meshes heavy metal and opera without seeming hokey or contrived. Hello JULES [ Tea Time With Jules / The MC's Channel ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen] from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

You really need to Listen to "Shoemaker" by Nightwish. It's an homage to Eugene Shoemaker who discovered the Shoemaker-Levy comet that crashed into Jupiter. BTW, Shoemaker's ashes were sent to the moon after he died.

I said it before, I say it again and I will keep on saying it forever and ever: NO ONE CAN BEAT THIS VERSION. Marco IS the Phantom's voice. And we know Tarja: we love her.
You are right, no one can beat this, but, close enough is the duet Floor Jansen and Henk Poort
Speak for yourself. For me it is already beaten, technically, in Performance and Quality by Floor and the Band on more then one Occasion. Every other opinion is acceptable. Something that would suit you too
There is a version that is floor with Marco. It's a fan made one, that predates floor doing it on best zangers.

The way in which they can harmonize their voices when needed, and make them contrast where appropriate is really cool.

Many fail to notice Marco's final scream. We focus on Tarjas final note, but Marco's final note carries for an insane amount of time, and then slides down. He's the 1st one on the final note, and the last one off.

My fav version of Phantom.. the energy, the feels, the epicness. And the Tarja / Marko dynamic.. the best.
If you want a few more examples of bands that can blend that contrast of light & dark, or operatic-style vocals with metal, Epica, Therion & Kamelot are also excellent. A lot of people don't realise, but a significant portion of metal musicians are classically trained & those influences carry over into the music.

You’re going to get hit with how one singer is better than the other two. They’re all great! In this performance Tarja is very young. She has taken good care of her voice and now has a successful solo career. It’s interesting to see how her voice has evolved and strengthened over the years. Right now she is on tour and will be visiting several cities here in the US.
Just a side note: Tarja is actually sick at this concert. She will be a little more breathy here

Tarja started out as more of a mezzo soprano in her youth, she has a beautifully rich and dark tone, and had to really develop her chest register for the songs she got to sing with Nightwish, but she is a soprano who can hit the high notes too!
She's definitely versatile, in a different way than Floor, but still considerably so! She transcends genres ❣ The mixture of her lyrical singing and the heavy metal sounds really is a very special and magical combination, very very cool!!

@@Rosannasfriend I mean she is! I want someone to listen to Stargazers, Feel For You, The Siren, her cover of House of Wax and her rendition of Ave Maria and tell me it's all the same singing style. She sounds so different in each of those!
Of course she has one main singing style, most singers have?? That's just normal. But when people pretend like she sings in one style and one style only they're just being silly.
@@karadenizin-kizi Sorry, but she doesn't really do much for me. her vibrato is too slow, and she sings off-key sometimes. She lacks strength in her chest voice, and it seems always that the songs are about her, and there is a disconnect with the band being a big part of it too. She did a few songs that really suited her more ethereal voice, and they are great; that is where I believe, her strength lies.

Tarja is a lyric soprano... and you are correct she switches octave as the arranger (organ player) wrote it as a symphonoic metal piece. :)

This was my intro to NW too 20 years ago. I loved this so much but didn't follow the band much. My mom had their CD. I rediscovered them last year. Love this band completely. This is my favorite version of any covers.
I'm sure you'll be pointed to other Nightwish songs such as Ghost Love Score, Shoemaker and Ad Astra, but I would recommend Ghost River from Wacken 2013 show. It has Floor and Marko singing duet - not in traditional opera style but really well nonetheless. The Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley 2015 show is also worth reacting to.

Nightwish really put this genre to the global measures and during this show (2005) they were known as a leader of the genre. I also like the concept which Tuomas and Tarja developed with the original NW members and in here they give a great example. This is a cover but awesome version of it...Marco is so great too and together they act the roles of Phantom and Christine nicely.
Welcome to Nightwish Jules. An excellent reaction! Marko is a high Tenor, his range is e2 to G#5 😁If you haven't heard "Ghost Love Score" yet then prepare be blown away. Their latest singer, Floor Jansen, is even more impressive. She is classically trained and has been singing in metal bands since age 16. Her range is C3 to G6, and she can go from demonic death growls to soaring head voice like flipping a switch. Yes, this band is no joke.

I do not think Floor would use those descriptives : "demonic or death" but she does do growls or distorted vocals as well as operatic and belting while switching from head to chest and mix belt

yes they are recorded, but they dont always go out in order of recording.. the editor does all that, so.. i think he just couldnt edit that out lol. but YES, more are done and on there way!

One of the best duets I have ever heard. Everything just works. Have you heard Tarja singing classical music? If you haven`t, please react to Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti, which was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church in Helsinki, with no tricks used but you hear her sing it just the way it was performed in the church with no audience. Another one: Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour, singing in her bright lyrical soprano tone. In the Nightwish era she sung mostly as a "dark soprano". Either way, absolutely gorgeous tone, what ever she sings. But she started her musical career with classical music, and that`s her true passion.

@@themcsyoutubechannel I can`t wait to hear your thoughts. Tarja said in an interview, that she had to adjust her classical style by a lot to make it work with metal. She also told, that when the last Nightwish album came out, she felt finally, everything worked.

Once you realise this is Marko after retraining his voice a few years after having a botched throat surgeon it should give you an idea of how much knowledge he has in this area.

Very true! That botched surgery left him without his entire falsetto range (his head voice), so he has no head/chest mix. His entire range now is his entire chest voice. There is rumor that to get his voice range back, he had taken some lessons from some unknown vocal coach, named Floor Jansen!
7:00 Marco is using a growling technique common in heavy metal. Marco's growl is quite tame in comparison. Tatiana Shmayluk a female vocalist can do these deep demonic growls and then switch over to clean singing vocals with almost supernatural speed. There are several good RUclips videos covering the technique more such as a growl workshop by Angela Gossow, and finally there's a RUclips channel by Charismatic Voice where a classical singer reacts to a variety of music videos and she was fascinated by the heavy metal growling technique she's even done a video where she learns the growling technique with Will Ramos.
Worth listening to the recent Nightwish version featuring Henk Poort as Floor Jansen the latest lead singer chooses not to use a wholly operatic style although she could. If you want to know how to switch from growl to chest voice and head voice flawlessly then Floor is the singer to follow. She has a RUclips channel where she performs covers, chats and gives vocal tips.

Hiiii,,,, Tarja and Marko together are nice,,,, but but... Nightwish with Floor and guest star Henk Poort is sensational,,,, performing in the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam,,,,,, just believe me,,it will blow you away....
I actually prefer their first performance on Beste Zangers... They both do better as far as I can tell. For me, the more intimate setting _and_ the "thunderstorm intro" just kicks it off perfectly 🥰
I too like Floor, but the Hank Port version with her, is nothing that great or unique. It really lacks a lot of originality. I would rather watch the Sarah Brightmen and Antonio Banderas version, instead.

from what i've read tarja had the flu and had to stop talking to try to save her voice for the show, after they fired her i could never listen to them again i have heard many versions of this, this is the definition next to it in the dictionary.. when i suggest this song i always specify.. the version with tarja in yellow.

Her opera chops are not at the level of a dedicated opera star but that is not her forte nor her goal. In addition to others her rendition of Mein Herr Marquis by Ricardo Strauss is not to be dismissed. From her Beauty and the Beat concert with long time drummer Mike Terrana.
Not to dismiss Tarja and Marco, but IMHO the 2022 version with current singer Floor Jansen and original Dutch Phantom Henk Poort is superior.
To be honest, since I heard this any rendition of the Phantom that doesn't end with Marko screaming "All right!" seems fake. :)

I really have massive respect at original songs.. But, this is insane!! Nobody can beat this band..
Tarja had that effect on people,they were bawling theyr eyes out,because they had never really heard operatic/classical vocals in metal before,i know there were female fronted bands already in rock and metal music in the mid 90s when they started out,but i honestly think Nightwish was the first ones to play symphonic metal AND have operatic/classical vocals on theyr songs. And the interesting part here is that composer,songwriter,genius Tuomas Holopainen said that them becoming a female fronted band was by pure coincidence,and nothing they had planned at all.

Looking stunning btw,respectfully and just genuinly speaking.Nice of you to pin Gabriels comment,he is our "new leader" after we sadly lost our "Mother of The Nightwish Army" a few years ago (long live her memory),in wonderful Ann Waychoff,and he is doing a great job in bringing the torch forward in her memory.

Some (or maybe a lot) of metal fans dislike the term "screamo". A more common term used is the word "growl" to describe a variety of extended singing techniques. Done properly, these techniques do not involve the vocal cords in the sound production (or are only marginally involved in it). For that reason Marco can switch from the harsh vocals to using vibrato without any issues.
My passion is to watch people reacting to the old Nightwish
I like Tristania, some of their older songs, for combining the growl and opera effect. Sequel of Decay and Beyond the Veil are both good songs for creating that contrasting dynamic.

The more recent version with current sibger Floor in 2022 is worth a look, with Henk Poort. They do a version on 2019 Beste Zangers also...Marco can sing straight Ave Maria Opera to hard core metal...Nightwish is just as versatile

The male vocalist (Marco) released his first album with his first band Tarot called The Spell of Iron in 1986, so he's a very experienced singer. His brother Zachary is also in that band. Marco participated and won the Masked Singer Finland after leaving Nightwish. So, he is not just an great metal singer, but a very versatile singer who masters also many other genres.
it is amazing. I've heard a few opera singers react to this, and they come for Tarja, and amazed by Marko, singing the phantom's parts.

Marco Hietala is one of the best male vocalists in the world. Any genre. He won the Finnish edition of the Masked Singer in 2020. Check out his Ave Maria with Floor Jansen.

I like to watch reactions to this song mainly because I like to watch reaction to Marko's performance eheh
to me it is Light meets dark, it is both spectrums vocally that blend to make a water oil swirl that mesmerizes, symphonic metal knows this and its schoolmaster is both classical and neoclassical modern multi-tempo changes, multiple changes in time signatures that aid in building to a climax and truly a masterful expression of starting off with elegance to build to that apex of emotive pure eruption and the passion of a talented vocal range in contrasting styles.
6:55 Smart Metal singers train classically, dumb ones destroy their voice early. Obviously, as people age it is harder, but metal singers are known for reaching extremely high notes. Especially in this category of metal, the dark/death/gore metal etc, they focus on the growl and chest. The best one's still perform well after their voice should give out. Again, like with the instruments, the best are classically trained

I think Henk could be technically better but for Nightwish style, Marko is way better for my taste, too. Henk has been performing the original musical version professionally for decades if I've understood correctly.
