Dr B has changed my life! His book Fiber Fueled, is life changing. I followed low carb diets for years and lost 50 lbs. I also developed diverticulitis and had two colon polyps. I have ibs and leaky gut and because of it I couldn’t eat many vegetables and fruits because they ripped up my stomach. His book made me realize I had Fodmap issues. Once I went through that elimination and then reintroduction of these food very slowly, I am now able to eat these plant diverse foods and all of my ibs symptoms are gone!

@@merncat3384 I went with all meat/fish and avocados for just 2 days. My chronic back pain disappeared! I then introduced foods back slowly, one or two at a time. Found the only thing I'm sensitive to is too much sugar, or too much wheat. I have no problem keeping my sugar very low and my wheat low, too. If u do this, go back in slowly with beans and raw cruciferous veggies. I no longer eat 12 cups of coleslaw, but 2-3 cups is fine. We're all different, tho. 2 of my kids won't drink milk. Thank you so much to both of these men. I feel like I’m getting control of my health little by little. Almost 1 month WFPB now. It hasn’t been a seamless transition but I’m seeing benefits, particularly in mood and blood pressure and the weight I can never loose is slowly coming off. I think the key is patience and consistency.

Blue Zones is anecdotal,. So no science there. Claiming Hadza (hunter gatherers) are plant eaters (observational) is to ignore the insects, carrion, eggs etc they must eat. The part on TMAO's was based on one 2014 study where the subjects only ate meat or only ate plants, kind of limited. How many were elderly or smokers? What kind of meat? Other experts have condemned beans due to the lectins which are very toxic if not heavily soaked and cooked. Finally the vegan ideology comes out with the concern about animal rights. While right, it has nothing to do with what to eat. It becomes political.

I was vegetarian for 15 years. Then I did a year of macrobiotic. Then I did a year being vegan. This was 20 year ago. Before it was a fad. Veganism really messed me up. I think it's good for a fast, or cleanse, for a few months. But it's not a good long term diet.
You can simply just eat a lot less meat, and stick to healthy animals that are well cared for and raised locally by a small farmer. Like organic grassfed A2 meat. Like limit your meat portion to 3 ounces per day. And don't just eat the muscle, eat nose to tail.

As an infectious disease physician, I agree a diversity of whole food plants are key to health not only because of fiber but because Whole Foods comes with critical polyphenols, vitamins, minerals, complex carbs, protein and healthy fats to combat inflammation. Specifically for COVID the acute inflammation is vascular and concentrated in the vascular system due to blood clots and thus causing respiratory inflammation amongst other tissues. The critical nutrients that have immediate anti inflammatory vascular effects are polyphenols, vitamins and minerals which are found in whole plant foods that can reduce blood clots and calm vascular inflammation. Unfortunately, The problem with chasing fiber is that the food industry is now making highly processed “health” foods with specific ultra-processed fibers that are devoid of the healthy natural combination of anti-inflammatory nutrients that are in real food. We talk to our body’s immune system via inputs and outputs. The greatest inputs are in the air we breath, the things we swallow and the stuff that contacts our skin.

Exactly. We've been lied to that the blue zones were vegan when in reality they ate an omnivorous diet locally and seasonally. Most importantly, when they did eat plants, nuts and seeds they prepared them PROPERLY before eating. Plants contain many toxins that make the nutrients they contain bio-unavailable to humans if we don't soak, sprout or ferment them first.

Been to Sardinia two years ago, in a town named Villa Grande, one of the Blue Zones. This is the place they commonly refer to when they speak of the benefits of "The Meditarenian Diet". Boy was I surprised when I realized they do not eat the "The Mediteranean Diet" at all. This town is on the island of Sardinia, but it is not a coastal town. They are high in the mountain. No fish. Prosciutto and mozarella everywhere, from their domestic cows that are roaming freely on the island. Specialty are pigs roasted in the holes in the ground. Of course, I was a tourist, so I couldn`t see the entire spectrum of the diet of the local population, but it made me aware of how misrepresented things are in the public discourse. And how we are simplifying things when we are not taking into account all the other factors, like clean air, fresh water, and an entirely different rythm of life (in Sardinia, like in the rest of Italy, everything is closed from 1 PM till 5 PM, they are having a "lunch break").

Well, moderation in all things still applies to eating, imho. Yes, we should get most of our nutrition from plants, but the earth is full of depleted soil that even growing things organically won't help. Soil needs animals to be healthy, from livestock to wildlife, and we need to eat some of those animals to make it worthwhile for the farmer to take the trouble to raise them.
Grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, chicken, and eggs, along with not tilling and eliminating chemical inputs, is what really raises soil from the dead, complete with the microbiome the soil needs, just as we humans need a healthy microbiome. We don't need to eat meat all the time. A few times a week would be more than adequate, especially if it's grown healthily and humanely on regenerative farms.
Livestock is the only thing that can transform deserts back into grasslands, which then become instead of heaters of the planet, coolers of the planet as the soil is able to suck in water and carbon, the two main components of life on earth. Even as Dr. B pointed out, the African tribe that still hunts and gathers still has meat when they can get it, which apparently does them no harm. Without animals, we wouldn't have plants. We can't just abandon the practice of growing livestock and think that's going to benefit the earth or our microbiomes.
All life evolved together, and nature itself shows us that all life exists on the remains of other life. Take it or leave it. I agree that most of our food should be plants, but a little meat or dairy, when raised properly, couldn't hurt and could really help.

I was engaged here until we got to the part about the study on how animal products essentially destroy the gut microbiome. Why is no one asking what quality of animal products were used? Of course if you study a plant-based diet for five days and then compare it to the standard American animal proteins sources you're obviously going to find and come to the conclusion that a plant-based lifestyle is the only way to go. Can we redo the study but with good clean sources of meat and dairy? This man sounded so smart up until this point. Seems like a very obvious question to ask. He said that he was putting broccoli sprouts in his (hot) soup to get enough sulforaphane. The problem is that the broccoli sprouts contain glucoraphanin and not sulforaphane.
Sulforaphane is made when you chew on the broccoli sprouts and the cells are being desroyed. Then the glucoraphanin comes in contact with an enzyme myrosinase and the enzyme converts the glucoraphanin into sulforaphane (this is part of the defence system of the broccoli plant).
Enzymes are destroyed when they are heated over 70 degrees Celsius (158 F). When you put broccolisprouts in your hot soup, no sulforaphane is made and you lost your nutritional advantage.

Is it possible that we a human beings are so diverse, that it is very rarely a 'one size fits all' when it comes to diet? What works for you may not work for me. I take what I can from a variety of informative sources, and I don't think anyone will argue that eating predominantly processed foods, be they plant based or animal based will probably cause trouble eventually. To imply that everyone thrives on plant based only or everyone will thrive on low-carb only, seems ridiculous. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one body of research that can prove either one definitively. I'm inclined to stick with an omnivorous diet of whole foods and good quality water that is chlorine free. The world of diet and nutrition continues to be a shit-show. What works for you? It's not always easy to figure it out, but I guess it's about the journey as much as the destination.

I will say once I got to the part of him talking about "training your gut" I became incredibly skeptical. My own anecdotal experience is that's not the case. I suffered for years trying to power through dietary issues with certain foods. They didn't get better. Some don't simply cause me to have a little bit more gas, they give me hours, even back to back days worth, to the point of pain and disruption of day to day living. If certain fiber feed certain bacteria, why would eating a small amount somehow be training your gut better than eating a regular amount? His argument doesn't really make sense. I'm at the point where after having replaced refined wheat with whole grains to be healthy, and having dealt with it for _10 years_, I've cut them from my diet completely.

@@user-sd8ri3ep2o Just sharing what works in my clinic. Obviously people who see me, I don’t just “train their gut.” I start by making sure there is not a medical reason for their food sensitivity. Their often is. Dietary modification comes later.

Gareth, it’s a good question. By no means am I suggesting a one size fits all. There are 300,000 edible plants and if you read my book I advocate a plant predominant diet that leaves room to wiggle based on your preferences and bio individuality. I personally thrive on a 100% plant based argument but it’s possible to be healthy without necessarily being 100%. The strongest arguments for 100% for all are the ethics and environment. That said, this is our biology. There will be examples that exist of people who smoke like a chimney and drink like a fish, but we can’t predict who those people are and for most of us that would shorten their ur life substantially. We know that there are certain foods that increase our risk of the latent disease - heart disease, cancer, stroke, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s. Short term feeling good isn’t the same as protection from these latent diseases. While there will be some who can eat stuff that we agree is unhealthy and get away with it, we can’t predict who those people are and for most of us that’s a bad idea. The ideal solution is an antiinflammatory diet (ie plant predominant) to attenuate those risks. Not one size fits all, but accepting of our biology. Hope that helps.

I would like to ask Dr Gundry, Dr McDougall, Dr Neal Bernard and Dr Will B to have an open panel discussion, possibly via you tube. That would be so informative and a phenomenal learning experience. Please, I am an obese nurse working with my diet. learning as much as I can to be healthy. I'm a Pathologist, so I will help Dr. Bulsiewicz with the description of the immune component of the gut. As he said, the gut mucosa is lined by an epithelial layer. Directily under this layer is the lamina propria which is a loose connective tissue containing Glands, blood vessels and lots of immune cells such as lymphocytes and macrophages with smaller numbers of eosinophils. Neutrophils aren't usually present unless there is active Inflammation occurring. Throughout the mucosa of colon and small intestine, one will usually find a number of small, reactive lymphoid Aggregates which are similar to a tiny lymph node, but they are lacking a capsule like a true lymph node and those are usually found in the submucosa. I hope this helps.

Such a great conversation. I have so many questions! One is about seasonal foods. You mention the importance of diversity but in certain climates, like where I am in Northern Europe, diversity in a large section of the year is reduced (because of the cooler climate). That was the motivation to relying (a long time ago) on animal products because, before transportation and cheap oil, it was easier to keep an animal than it was to process all foods grown during the warmer season so there was sufficient food. I'm a land worker and the bets on animals surviving, especially during changing climate, are higher than crops. This season we lost 800 squash plants in a storm. Luckily, we live in a culture where we can rely on imports and others. I'd love your guys thoughts. Do you think there's absolutely no place for including eggs, cheese, fish, chicken, meat...etc? Perhaps the American model is slightly different to here in the UK. Thanks!!

Dr. B speaks in a way that penetrated my grass-fed, wild game, meat eating soul. I definitely did not want to let this point of view in, again. As many of us have played in Vegetarian-Vegan-Raw Food-GlutenFree-GlutenFree but better-Keto (Carnivore, never spoken to me, personally),I had found complete joy in the mostly Keto-Organic sandbox. I thought I had reached diet Nirvana...then enter Dr. B's voice on The Rich Roll Podcast.

good stuff, some great information but a bit too much vegan propaganda midway onwards
if you are eating a diet primarily from the agricultural industry it'll be laced with chemicals and antibiotics
grow as much of your own food as possible or forage it from the wild
predators in nature have a microbiome and they get it from somewhere, a lion doesn't go chewing on some plants, meat has benefits but you should try and stay away from the lower grade processed rubbish and eat less due to poor farming practices
