I am LOVING this character so far, and the story holds a lot of promise.

Everyone really wanted Alfira as a bard companion character/romance option in the Early Access. So, I'm fairly certain her showing up at camp was them darkly trolling the fan base.

ive finished watching other playthroughs but ive never saw any make the backstory like you would in the table top dnd, they just make a tav say what build there going for, its nice to see someone really embracing there tav role in the game.
the face the dark urge makes right before they do some out of pocket shit is so funny, I started calling it The Grinch Face in my playthrough. like, the second The Grinch™ appears you just KNOW something wack is about to happen 😂

You absolutely must recruit Minthara!!
YES It can be done without killing the grove now, plus her interactions with Durge are so good. I mean her interactions with everyone are Great, but especially for a durge playthrough. Just make sure to look up a guide (lexytv has a great one) and you're good to go
You and I share an equal fondness for Lae'zel. Love at first sight, and just utterly unphased by her early bitchiness because we know who she really is already.

After I first played a Durge character, I found it difficult to go back to a normal Tav on a new playthrough. The way it’s written, and the ways you can play it (embrace vs resisting the urge) are just both so compelling and really cement the player character as a major part of the story. I really can’t wait to see more of this playthrough, your first one was so good and padlock is also a great multiclass combo, as they’re both charisma based!
Paladin Warlock is a good multiclass mechanically as well because they're both charisma based spellcasters!
Warlock already is so much fun, I can't wait to be able to smack people with divine smite

Fun fact: there are sixteen different narration styles that Amelia Tyler recorded for different types of playthroughs and her favorite is when the player indulges the Dark Urge (this actually drastically changes the narration in style and content). Also fun fact: most of the voice acting was recorded a second time to differentiate Dark Urge playthroughs and custom Tav/Origin playthroughs. Pretty crazy when you think about how much work that took.
If you think some voice lines sound markedly different from your last run, you aren't crazy! Volo, in particular, speaks with a different inflection and doesn't gussy up his speech as much for the Dark Urge (there are spoiler reasons for this), like he might with Gale or Tav.
Oh that is really cool! It's been a while since I played through act 1 so I wasn't sure if the dialogues were different or not
"She's never felt more free than now" oooh this will come back in such a big way once you figure out who/what durge is! So excited for this playthrough. Also love that you're playing a more conflicted durge who doesn't just give in to the violent urges for the lolz. The internal conflict of a resist!durge gets sooo juicy as the game continues 👀👀
I'm excited to see what the durge will go through, the first act alone is already so intense with a lot of foreshadowing!
when I reached that part of my durge run... I was just sat in my chair speechless for a few minutes... it took a while for my brain to process what I'd just learned lol :) That durge run was a resist the urge one, my next durge I'm going to do my best to embrace the urges, but damn... it's REALLY hard for me to actually choose evil options, it's going to be an interesting experience for sure

Be careful with the long resting in future playthroughs! I think if you long rest 10 times before saving the grove the druids complete the ritual and kick the tieflings out. Have fun with your durge!

That definitively is a myth. I think, somebody already has tried it and never hit a spot like that. The only thing is, when you move on into another region, than the grove will be sealed off.

The sequences with the Tav alone and going to bed are definitively different for the Durge. Things are way more sinister and you are afflicted by your unknown past. Also the dark urge is filling your minds.

you dont need to send shadowheart away to camp to avoid getting disapprovals, just move her out of earshot by separating her from the group. if she is out of earshot she wont give you disapproval when you make zorru kneel.

If Selene was a Cleric of Selûne that would be so perfect
Man, that's always so brutal. When I did my dark urge play through it was as a Lolth-sworn Drow Assassin. Of course she didn't remember that, but when Alfira was killed she had the distinct impression that she should have been getting paid for it. It wasn't really a redemption arc, it was more of a dating a Dark Justiciar and siding with Minthara kinda thing. As she was raised in noble Drow society she was already cruel and thoroughly evil, but even she didn't pull the wings off of the bird 🤣
I don't know if you have intention to get minthara and you're past it in your playing vs. what youve put out for us but if you are they made it so we can recruit her without a full evil run. Highly recommend the tutorial by Lexy on doing so but nonetheless durge changes dynamics with everyone so it'll be fun to see anyone whose recruited!
I played through the end of act 1 and can confirm I saved minthara! Seeing that patch note was exciting so I made it my mission to save her

But yes, the companions seem chattier because you're long resting a bunch right away. There are quite a few conversations that can only trigger very early on.
edit: I kinda assumed that Lae'zel accidentally stumbled into one of the goblin traps you can find scattered around, not that the tieflings themselves captured her. Cuz, let's be real, no way are those two tough enough to put her in a cage.

I was really looking foward to this 😊, coincidentally I am just wrapping up the act 3 in my second playthrough as the Dark Urge (neutral/chaotic good) (Half Drow Druid of Spores), thank you so much for the vid :)
also, arguably there are a lot of moments as the Dark Urge which are important enough as to warrant the oath (act 1/2/3), I would say, do it when it feels right

The narrator said she recorded like a dozen different versions of many of her lines that depend on which origin/race/etc you are playing as, so yes, the Durge narration is going to always be slightly more sinister even in the parts where the words are basically identical

Yeah your tav missed out on a fair few cutscenes because of the lack of long resting…there’s a TON of little events in part 1 especially
Oh man, I made my good durge an Oath of the Ancients Paladin because I wanted them to be someone who made an oath of good and wanted to stay good as long as possible. I did break it once on accident (no spoilers but it really was an accident) and was an oath breaker for a bit. PadLocks are a very good combo.
Oath of the ancients looks like such a good oath for durge, it's totally the one I have in mind too!
My first Dark Urge (tiefling) was a warlock as well: Archfey, pact of the Tome. Multiclassed into bard part-way through due to her learning music with Alfira, and it was such a good stepping-off point to leading my Dark Urge into a narrative of finding her own happiness. Because, according to how her story felt and developed, she hasn't been actually, truly happy in a *long* time.
Lol, give me five! Your DarkUrge character looks cool. ❤ In my opinion warlock is also a great choice, you may later see why. You will be my paragon, because you often made the same decisions as me in your previous game

I had so many fun play throughs as different Tavs now, i need some change. And I’m also testing a bunch of new mods alongside. But this is actually my first Dark Urge attempt 😅
I can't really watch this just yet to avoid durge spoilers, but I really enjoyed your first playthrough and I'll definitely catch up at some point. I highly recommend trying to explore the game as much as you can this time, I'm pretty sure there are entire quests, areas and bosses that you didn't get to see during your first playthrough (and companion dialogue/lore too!). Which is not surprising, it seems the game is much harder to explore on controller as opposed to mouse/keyboard 😅 Either way, I hope you have an amazing experience!
One of the things I was hoping for in a dark urge run was the option to slap Shadowheart awake, or at least the urge to do so hahaha

Just finished my first Astarion romance a couple of hours ago and you're right, there's a lot of similarities between his journey and Durge especially if you're trying to redeem yourself.
I love the idea of a Padlock Durge. It makes sense when you're trying to redeem yourself.
I'd recommend going to Withers to respec once you plan on getting your paladin levels. 7 levels of paladin and 5 of warlock is pretty good for combat. But it isn't necessary if you don't want to tbh.
The Alfira scene was heart breaking with how much I loved her in my first run

The cut from your previous playthrough where Alfira is asking where you guys might travel to, to your current durge - Hilarious. The excitement in the first clip, to the look of despondence in the second had me in stitches. Very excited to see you play through your durge run, and as others have said, you have built the perfect character for it.

I love that with your custom playthrough you've got the bones of the story but nothing else. Be prepared for a very cool but very DIFFERENT and sometimes disturbing but all in all incredibly amazing ride! I'm on playthrough FIVE now and am STILL discovering mind blowing new stuff! It'll be fun to watch!
So excited to see this video pop up!! SH romance + Durge where you both are working through memory loss is just perfect. Larian almost made durge paladin default, so great choice for later narrative! Light cleric is a blast if you want to try a new subclass on Shadowheart, too.

OMG I'm so glad you're playing as Dark Urge! It is my favorite! And yes, the narrator is simply sublime. I was waiting for that scene with Gale and was hoping you'd choose that option. Dark Urge is so much fun plus the dialogue is different.
BTW, you can save Alfira, if you want.

Its really quite different in many aspects. And of course it opens up another 2 possible ways - a redemption path and a path that embraces these dark urges.

You are in for a trip. Personally I think Dark Urge is the canonical character, you'll find out why.
Also, out of curiosity, did you turn off Karmic Dice in the settings?

@@CuriouslyKayKarmic Dice is where it guarantees streaks of success and/or failure dice rolls. Turning it off guarantees true randomness and is more fair in my eyes.

Dunno how far ahead in your actual play you are, but you should try and rescue Minthara this time around. Even if you're playing a Good/Resist Dark Urges playthrough. She's an amazing character.
To do so, the way most people do it, is when assaulting the Goblin Camp, you should rescue Volo, the other guy on the rack, and maybe get your Loviatar's Love buff, from the torturer guy, if you want it. Then go and start a conversation with Minthara, talk a little bit, but before you end the conversation choose the "Attack" option and during battle make sure your non-lethal damage passive is turned on. And ONLY USE Melee weapons to hit her. You can knock her life down with spells and arrows, but in order to keep her alive, only Melee hits will count for non-lethal damage. You'll know it worked when fighting her, she has the "Temporarily Hostile" buff tag.
Anyway, now that she's knocked out, now you can slaughter the rest of the camp without worry. Minthara SHOULD appear during the intro scene to Ketheric (where the Goblin throws the axe in his chest). Then you just have to perform a rescue of her from prison and now she's on the squad. Don't loot ALL her clothes otherwise she'll be fully nude during her intro scene. You can take her (Astarion's) Armor. But leave her normal clothes on her body.

Your character write-up was awesome. I like that you're going for a bit of a "Resist The Dark Urges" playthrough. Since this game is amazing, they certainly have the story paths to let you have the option to indulge the Dark Urge playthrough, and a resist the Dark Urge playthrough. Be careful about interacting with Animals as the Dark Urge. As you saw, it can get unpleasantly cruel.
I also like that since you already have a full playthrough done, you know what to expect more or less and how to actually craft a story for your character inside the game narrative. Stick with Gale, he's amazing. And you already know Karlach is Karlach.

I've only watched about 10 minutes of this, and I can already tell that this will be good. I have to agree, Paladin doesn't mesh well with the dark urge. The back-story that you came up with is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to edit in your original reactions, dark urge is really shocking, and won't have the same effect the second time. Playing a Drow really changes the interactions too, especially in act one.

If you don't want Alfira to die as a Dark Urge, you have to deny her when she wants to stay at your camp. Telling her to leave, is the only way.
This doesn't work. You still find her corpse. The only way to "save" Alfira is through a failsafe Larian made in case a Dark Urge player massacred the grove before getting this scene, though rather than kill her, you need to knock her out because the game still treats knocked out people as dead for the most part, so the game plays the sequence as if Alfira was already dead and another bard shows up.
FYI , you are now playing the REAL, canon , storyline of Baldurs gate with WAY WAY more interactions , enjoy :D
With dark urge there is two paths btw; give into the urge, or resist the urge, both change the game significantly.
I love that this game gives you the opportunity to create a character with such a deep backstory - makes every playthrough unique.

I haven't seen anything related to her romance at all, but if it's worth reacting to, I'm thinking about a video where I react to the romances that I didn't play!
Hey I recommend you try a modded version of the game, especial the Party limit begone mod, you’ll be able to travel with everyone In your party, I also recommend trying it in honor mode to get the best full party experience.
Ah I would, but I play on the ps5. That mod definitely would come in handy though!
you can avoid Alfira's death if you manage use non lethal attack to make her unconscious before the long rest she would visit.
You can also tell her to leave when she asks to stay.
