russell crowe tells the story of shopping in italy. when he came out of the shop, the street was PACKED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS! cops were trying to manage the crowd. he asked one of the cops what is going on. the cop said "YOU'RE WHAT'S GOING ON!" the crowds started chanting "Massimo, Massimo!" 🤣 loved your reaction 👍☺
Gladiator 2 shouldn`t be a thing when the first one even decades later is perfection you can only be let down....This was amazing to watch at cinema when it was first released.
An old workmate in Croydon (south of London, England) was one of the Roman soldiers in the first battle. A really unusual guy who's also appeared on TV a tiny bit to do with his private detective work. I had some bizarre brief times with him, including ending up in a nightclub in the middle of nowhere wearing tiny shoes, being motorbiked to someone's garden where I stood guard while he snooped for his job etc.
the shot where you see his hands go through the weats... Ridley Scott walked through the fields and thought it would be a cool shot!he didnt burn down the fields, although he alway, I repeat Always have a cigar in his mouth!40 degrees celsius and a dry field!also my best cinematic experience of 2000!
Though the emperor Commodus "fought" in the arena he did not die there. The scenes showing the emperor practicing a set of representative sword moves alludes to how in the arena Commodus was never in danger. He did like to kill.
Also fun fact. In these movies, they always do the thumb up/down thing the wrong way around. Thumb up meant you die, in real life. I guess the change is to make it less confusing for viewers.
I went with my brother to see this in the theater but we got there late and it was sold out so we saw the first X-Men movie instead. I've seen Gladiator well over a dozen times since then. From what I understand the costume details and production designs are more or less historically accurate, and while some of the characters were actual historical figures, the story itself is fiction. And please pass the popcorn! Richard Harris, aka Marcus Aurelius, also played Professor Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, English Bob in Unforgiven (1992), John Morgan in A Man Called Horse (1970), and King Arthur in Camelot (1967) to name a few of his roles.
it's based on a Novel that is based on real history, but it's also been dramatized to so there is about 25-30% truth in the film and the rest is fiction wise.
I hate time. Hearing what these people are when movies have come out makes me sad. I definitely seen this in theaters. Not quite 18 enough. Sadly, they’re making a sequel that doesn’t need to exist to a perfect film.
That was great, thanks for posting. Really liked your comment about how in one moment you were detesting the depravity of the gladiator violence, and in the next you were cheering on the Spaniard. It's a razor thin line unfortunately, but you're correct.
Revenge is the summit of literature and in the real world, moral justification for violence. It's the means that a cause justifies. It's the cause of the self perpetuating wars. Turning the other cheek on purpose is the rarest of events, even for so called Christians
Director Ridley Scott made another epic sword and sandle film that few react to called "Kingdom Of Heaven." The trick is that you must watch the Director's Cut. Otherwise, it is really a lousy film due to studio tampering. That shows you the power of editing in making or breaking a film. Another excellent film of his is the crime dramedy called "Matchstick Men" with Nicholas Cage and Sam Rockwell. It is another Ridley Scott gem that is often overlooked because it isn't some big sci-fi or action extravaganza.
Really enjoy all your reactions. Especially the fact you are intelligent, and can catch the subtle details. You said at the beginning you didn't speak English as a child. You would never know it. What was your mother tongue?
The shots near the end of the film, the fighting, in which you don't see Proximo's face are because Oliver Reed, the actor who played him, had died. He was a heavy drinker - who of the great Brit actors of his era weren't? - and he died, I think of a heart-attack, during a drinking contest with some sailors.
'Matchstick Men' by Ridley Scott is an excellent dramady / crime movie about professional con artists. Nic Cage is the lead. The character he plays suffers from various ticks and OCD behaviours brought on by the dreadful life choices he's lived by (grifting). It's very good, entertaining, interesting and it's touching.
@@ariachanson01 You would love the film and Sam Rockwell continues to showcase how versatile he is. From goofy sidekick in "Galaxy Quest" to totally insane killer in "The Green Mile" to an internally troubled and morally conflicted racist in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." Sam is fantastic in all his roles.
I recommend you check out Ridley Scott's first film from 1977, called THE DUELLISTS. It's a unique story where two French military officers serving in Napoleon's army, duel each other multiple times over roughly a 14 year period. Excellent film!
The little boy in this movie is the main character in gladiator 2 because of Maximus killing Commodus, so think about that the cycle continues Commodus nephew runs away becomes a slave and fights
This is a remake of "The Fall of the Roman Empire" from 1964 with a little bit of "Spartacus" from 1960 thrown in. Don't blame Marcus Aurelius too much, every father wants to think that their son is capable of understanding them, I'm sure Marcus Aurelius didn't think that even Commodus would be that treacherous.

Yeah, I know I will sound like a naysayer, Aria, but the only good Alien films were the first two. The rest kind of damage the franchise. "Prometheus," as an example, was absurd on its face with really dumb characters doing really dumb things, and a convoluted "mystery box" plot written by a hack screenwriter. IMHO
@@mr.a8315 If the the plot and characters turn me off, I simply cannot get into the movie, no matter how pretty it looks. Take for instance "Avatar 2." When the kids said what seemed like the 300th "bro" I just shut that thing right off. What a crap script!
@@dan_hitchman007 Fair play. 👍 I've not seen Avatar 2, I wasn't really impressed with the first one - it was okay. But it just seemed like re-skinned Dances With Wolves.
This was my first R rated movie! Saw it in theaters when I was 10, my friend’s Dad took us! (RIP). One of my all time favorites to this day.

He probably beat them up afterwards! Lol Russell Crowe had anger issues and got in fights constantly back in the day! Watch the South Park episode! 😆
Well I'm glad Joaquin Phoenix wasn't there 😆
Even after over 20 years, the ending still brings tears to my eyes.
me too.
Hell yeah it does!
Yeah, that "Go to them" gets me every time after losing all my loved ones, it never fails to get a reaction out of me.
Braveheart too. Actually, the end of Braveheart is too powerful for me. I cant sit through it
@@LukeLovesRose but braveheart has hardly any historical facts. where as Gladiator is just a story really.

Well the change happened centuries ago as it's used now as a sign of "good job". It happened similarly as languages evolve
A timeless classic of a film. Thx.

"Commodus was assassinated by the wrestler Narcissus in 192" (Wikipedia)

As the mass of Rome leaves to honor Maximus, Commodus' sister remains to do her duty for her family and see to the burial of the emperor.
People don't conclude they killed each other, Commodus mortally wounded Maximus when stabbed in the back
gladiator 2 is a crime against cinema
There's also a new show on Peacock "Those About to Die" with Anthony Hopkins
