The incident at Starfleet Academy involving Ensign Sito is a direct callback to the 5th season episode "The First Duty". Wesley Crusher was also directly involved in the attempt to cover up what really went down.
And don't forget Tom Paris from Voyager. Yes, the characters had different names, but that was the result of behind the scenes. Changing his character name meant not having to pay the writer any fees from First Duty episode.
@@joeeyaura There's a lot of good ones she's missed (but she's pretty much free to track back on), I was just thinking how crazy it is she's wrapping up the series and hasn't met Troi's mother or Broccoli.
I still die laughing when Troi tells Warf that she thought he wanted to be alone on his birthday and hit himself with a pain stick or something and when she smirked and laughed, I die laughing. I think that was Marina breaking character, but they kept it in because it was so genuine.
Worf did go hard into his character. He was always a consumate professional. It's why his character transcended more than one series. I remember seeing him on an episode of the outer limits. He just oozes professional acting. If you saw that episode. You can tell he had fun with it.
When Geordi was injured and Worf was talking to Data, I kept wondering if Cassie would notice that data's eyes were blue and catch on. It was very prominent and they did a number of close ups where something looked "off" about him.
Picard's response of "How interesting. So are we," to the Romulan captain is low-key brilliant. No matter how flimsy an excuse it sounds, the Romulan can't question it because he used it first.
Romulans are supposed to be sneaky though😌. Federation are meant to be honest. Should have just said we're looking for some lost property, now mind your own business. (But it was hilarious, yes).
That whole continuous exchange between the captains feels hilarious. They both fully know they are both lying their asses off and don't particularly care about hiding it much in their manner, although they do have to not explicitly say so, in case their words somehow get on the record.
The last episode, Below Decks, followed a Cardassian plot-line that would be regularly handled by Deep Space 9, which has been on the air for just over a year by this time. Looking very forward to All Good Things... this series was sent off with class!
The comics have been exploring alternate universes since the 70s with the original What If? comic, though their Distinguished Competition started doing it in the 60s, and would even have annual team-ups between universes until 1985. It's a classic Science Fiction plot element since possibly the 1800s. Certainly since pulp science fiction magazines gained ground in the 1920s and 30s. May have even existed earlier, depending on your definition of "alternate universe," instead of, say, Neverneverland, or Land of Fairy.
Yes. 1961. Flash of two Worlds. And in Trek TOS you had 'The Alternative Factor' and 'Mirror, Mirror', albeit those were just about two universes. In literature it is even older.
*Yup. As soon as she said she was watching “Parallels”, I thought: If that episode was written today, it would have been called “Multiverse” (Maybe even “Multiverse of Madness”; which the movie was NOT compared to this!)* 😎👍
Among all the subtle differences in personnel, set decoration, uniforms and such, I noticed that Brent Spiner's contact lenses were also different in alternate realities. Sometimes normal blue human eyes, sometimes Mr. Data's trademark yellow eyes.
I'm only halfway through the reaction, but I love how engrossed you are when Picard and Riker are talking about the mutiny on the Pegasus. You are visibly on the edge of your seat. TNG is the best and it's totally sucked you in. You are an official Trekkie!
Parallels always has s special place in my heart because the day it aired where I lived it was my birthday too! As for lower decks one year when I was at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas one of the attendees was cosplaying as Sito. She really did look just like her too!!! She asked if I could take some pictures of her on the transporter set they had set up and I did. Then I asked if I could take a picture with her too. We did I told her I knew she escaped we both had a good laugh. 🖖
“Pegasus” is one of my favorite episodes because it allows Jonathan Frakes to really shine and show what he can do. To me Riker is a character that if you took him out of next gen the show falls apart. I love the cast and characters but Riker is basically the bridge between all of them. He’s like that fun uncle you love seeing what type of mayhem he’s gotten himself into since you saw him last.
It's funny that you point that out because Jonathan Frakes has worked on the most Star Trek shows either as an actor, director, or both. He really is a sort of bridge for the entire franchise.
@Cassie, I am so happy you saw Lower Decks. The incident Captain Picard is referring to when he chews out Ensign Sito Jaxa happened on the 5th season episode "The First Duty" and centers around Wesley's time at Starfleet Academy.
Lower decks is one of my favourite star trek episodes (of any series) because it kind of trolls the audience. It introduces a bunch of new characters, makes you care about them, and then kills one of them off! It shows that the random non regular characters who always die on away missions and nobody really cares about are real people with friends, family, relationships and ambitions.
The conversation in “The Pegasus” between Captain Picard and the former captain of the Pegasus… Picard already told Riker about noticing that he stood up to Captain DeSoto. Interesting reference all the way back to “Encounter at Farpoint”, during a scene shortly after Riker reconnected the saucer section and the rest of the Enterprise. Also, this episode has always reminded me of the myth of the Philadelphia experiment.
Interestingly, the original intention of the episode where Borg took Picard was to kill him off because Patrick Stewart wasn't happy with his role on the show and requested to be let out of it, but the writing on the episode where he was going to be written off convinced him that there could be SERIOUS writing/acting on the show and he stayed. And also, one of the original pitches for Worf as a character had him being the alien first officer ala Spock, but someone behind the scenes was against a Klingon in that role. So the timeline that Worf wound up in where Picard died in the Borg conflict and Worf was first officer feels like an homage to those concepts.
This is the third iteration of this baseless rumor,, and it is a load of crap. It’s only been around the past three or four years or so. If it had any truth to it, we’d have heard about it decades ago. I saw Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, and LeVar Burton at various Star Trek conventions and this was never once even brought up.
@@SciTrekMan Well, as I can't seem to find the article or video where I first heard it, I'll take your word for it at the moment. The closest I could easily find a reference that was even close right now was one statement about Stewart's agent maybe creating rumblings that Stewart was discontent to "fluff up his actor" and a reference to several contracts being up in the air. I was repeating the story in good faith having heard or read it from a relatively legitimate source (despite the fact that I am not remembering which one).
Not the story that I originally heard, but the TrekCulture video 10 Production Secrets Behind These Star Trek Cliffhangers does talk about issues with contract negotiations with Patrick Stewart around the time of the episode.
Bajorans are part of the main storyline of StarTrek Deep Space 9, a spin-off series that were already on air during the last season of the Next Generation.
Gates McFadden switched from wigs to her own hair not long before these episodes. I believe that same is true for Marina Sirtis. I wish Cassie had seen Cadet Sito's previous episode with Cadet Crusher - the "back story." Sito was planned to return in season 8, but. . . I really, really wish Cassie had also seen "Rascals!" Young Jean-Luc was played by the same actor who had played his nephew in "Family." Also, she would've loved "Disaster."
I'm surprised that she doesn't now want to watch every single episode of TOS and TNG, even if on her own time. I mean, why wouldn't you? Don't you want to see all that you missed? This notion that she can't do that because her channel would fall apart is silly. I mean, just watch one or two episodes a week. It's not like there's a rush to see them all.
I love Rascals and Disaster...although that kid actor was a bit annoying TBF🤣. "Oh yeah, your nephew looks precisely the same as you did when you were his age, don't worry about it.”

Turning Seven into a Lesbian, emasculating Picard, showing GORE and VIOLENCE in a Star Trek show just to appease the "modern audience" Yeah...no thanks. "Parallels" is one of my top 5 TNG episodes. I'm so happy you reacted to it. And I loved your Marvel comment, had me laughing out loud.😂 Love you and your reactions hon. Thank you for all you do and for being you! ❤
I love watching shows through Cassie's eyes. I rewatch the episodes before watching her reaction, and the Worf/Troi relationship in Parallels hit so much harder seeing the show that way. I was bouncing up and down thinking "Cassie's going to go nuts!".
The girl that died appeared in another episode with Wesley at Star Fleet Academy....that is the incident Captain Parcade was talking about when he was talking down to her
***SPOILERS*** I love how they tie in the animated Lower Decks series with that TNG episode. It was a shocking swerve in Mariner's backstory that she looked up to Sito in the Academy, and Sito's death is the reason why Mariner has never wanted to be promoted above Ensign. Whilst Mariner does love Starfleet, has a fascination with exploration and ship technology, and is fully willing to put her life on the line for others, she categorically does NOT want to be in a position where she has the responsibility of potentially sending someone else to their death. Staying an Ensign all those years kept her out of that position.
The idea of Worf and Deanna being married is really funny if you think of them doing the traditional Klingon courtship, where he reads poetry and she tries to kill him 🤣🤣🤣
The first time I ever watched anything Star Trek was one where Data was staring at a pot boiling, trying to figure out the phrase, why a watched pot never boils. Thank you for watching these, I think I appreciate this show a bit more for it.
@@Sekir80 @JS-wp4gs Guys, relax. She obviously only meant Mr. Beast's level of success. If our universe had had her as "Ms. Beast" instead, she would obviously have aced it and not been a horrible person.
One of the earliest known instances of alternate worlds being addressed on television was in 1963, in an episode of The Twilight Zone titled "The Parallel." In this story, an astronaut returns to Earth to discover that his life is different in this reality than they were in the one he left. Shortly after this, an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series aired in 1967 called "Mirror Mirror." During this episode, Captain Kirk and his crew are replaced by their evil doppelgängers after a transporter malfunctions, and must battle to find their way back to their own version of reality. Some say the Wizard of OZ counts as a multiverse and is the first.
parallels is genuinely my fav TNG episode, and one of my top episodes in television. all those enterprises, the visual of multiple worfs ... deanna ... but of 'course' it's the acting of michael dorn that lifts this up!
The time when Worf thought he was about to die was a reference to the 5th season episode "Ethics" which is one of my personal favorites. Check that one out sometime!
In Parallels, Worf's birthday is his 30th. He's actually the youngest of the senior staff. Geordi, Troi & Riker are all about 5-6 years older, & Data, Beverly & Jean-Luc are even older.... BTW, Do we know any other Bajorans? Ro Laren is Bajoran & been on the show for 3 years by now lol
Well, we met some other Bajorans during Ro's first episode, and one of the main cast of DS9 is Bajoran. I don't remember if DS9 had first aired at this point
We had met the Bajorain's before, plus the seventh season of TNG was running at the same time as the second season of Deep Space Nine (which you REALLY need to watch next), and the Bajorian/Cardassian races were key figures in that series.
re: Worf and Diana. I gotta admit, in a million years I never would have, on my own, have lined those two up - and yet, the moment the possibility was suggested, I was 100% behind it. Every now and then, I like to be surprised, and although the obvious lineup between Riker and Diana was clearly written from day 1 and not entirely objectionable, it was also a little relentlessly predictable. Giving us an entirely new and unexpected angle on Worf and Diana was a seriously welcome breath of fresh air.
YES! SO happy Parallels got into the watch-a-long - Parallels might be my favorite episode of the series, and I'm not even kidding. I love this episode. As a guy who grew up with science, loved general relativity and quantum mechanics, this episode just tickles my fancy as the saying goes. I know it's all speculative and the technobabble is a bit, much. But I love it, so much lol YAY
I highly recommend that you go back and watch the fifth season episode "The First Duty." It introduces Sito Jaxa and fills in her backstory, particularly about the incident at the Academy to which Picard refers. It's an episode that hits very close to home for me in a lot of ways, and it's one of my favorite episodes across all of the Star Trek series.
DS9 was great, but reacting to it would be hard for her. The show get's really complicated in later seasons with the war and all, and it would be really difficult for her to just watch select episodes.
I would love to see her reaction to Deep Space Nine but I don’t know if that’s possible since this is a show that requires to watch more than 4 episodes a season especially in the later seasons.
@happyhedgehog6450 There are plenty of one-shot episodes she could watch, but it'd be a shame bc she'd miss the narrative arc and that's what made DS9 great. That and hurting Miles O'Brien
love it when trek gets into these scientific theories, quantum universes, time travel etc. It's wonderful to see it play out and be sorted out in their own way.
I had a multi-universe experience, in that I used to sit and watch this crew, while totally gaga over counselor Troy. But suddenly, through a warping of crazy events, I found myself dancing with Troy, then sitting in a booth with my arm around her taking selfies. *Not to turn the blade in the wound but: It’s a bit normal you did not see Worf’s and Troi’s potential romance coming since you did not watch all the previous episodes; but had you, you would have seen a few hints here and there, including the episode that was referenced in this one, when Worf damaged his spine and he and Troi had a few small moments.* *”Lower Decks” also had a great link back to an episode you did not get to see when the incident ensign Sito was involved in at the academy was the subject of the episode… And even involved Wesley Crusher! (It’s a great episode which you should see!)… Plus, had you watched the other episodes, not only would you have met many other Bejorans: You would have met a very important one to this series* *I love Jonathan Frakes’ acting in “Pegasus”, especially in the scene where Picard grills Riker about the mutiny: Frakes body language is COMPLETELY different than his usual assured self. It’s really as though Frakes played it as who Riker was back when he was an ensign.* *_”MUTINYYYYYYYY!”_** 😂 Mutiny never sounded better!* 🤣👍👍 *”Lower Decks” is one of the most innovative episodes in ALL OF TELEVISION HISTORY: How often does any show break away from it’s main cast to flesh out characters that are usually overlooked so much that they are virtually invisible and not even an afterthought on the show!* *And now, all that is left is the ultimate finale… 😭😭😭 Too soon!*
Little behind the scenes. That look on Deanna's face at the end was from Michael Dorn (Worf) saying off camera "condoms". Marina Sirtis is struggling to maintain her composure in that close up.
One of my favorite episodes. I love the changes in history and how they appear out of nowhere. A bad story for Worf who makes mistakes that were not his fault. Geordie also has a bad day.
Cassie, you've got to watch Deep Space Nine. It didn't get the love it deserved when it first aired, but watching it years later as an older man, I have to say its some of the finest Star Trek out there. It centers around the Bajoran/Cardassian conflict and has much more of an overall story arc than TNG. It deals with darker material as well... some of the best ethical conundrums I've ever seen on TV, and you'll fall in love with the characters. The character development of some of them is fantasic. Nog, for instance, has one of the best character arcs ever! And until you've witnessed it firsthand, you won't truly understand how epically Miles O'Brien is made to suffer in the show. 😅
Sadly this will never happen. DS9 doesnt follow an episodic format like all the other treks, but as you well know, a long connected story arc. This would make it impossible to follow just watching 4 episodes per season.
@@fedord01 True, but I think Cassie is going to go back and watch some TNG episodes she missed on her own because she likes the show so much, and that could lead to her doing the same for DS9. However I also think Cassie doesn't care about a long connected story as much as we do, and won't connect to the DS9 characters as much as she did to TNG. So while I think she'll give DS9 a shot, I don't think she'll stick with it or put it on RUclips. Maybe she'll do a bit of it for Patreon though.
You're not wrong, but DS9 in no way suits the cherry picking method of watching Star Trek which Cassie has adopted. You either watch it all or you don't watch it. I do think Voyager will work for her though, and I think she'll like it a lot.
@@stevemccullagh36 I haven't watched DS9 in a very long time, so I could be wrong, but I thought there was still a good amount of stand alone episodes that could be skipped, especially in the beginning. Although I admit you'd have to watch much more than for The Next Generation.
Just noticed this. Probably did at another point, but it's a really interesting detail. Bet Brent Spiner liked not doing the yellow contacts for a few scenes. (A clip of him looking at his own action figure from either a documentary or a special has lived rent free in my head for many years now about him complaining they didn't get the eye color right.)
I love how Worf has evolved over the course of this show. Michael Dorn plays the part so well too. He's extremely put out by the surprise party, but these are his FRIENDS; he'll suffer through it and "pretend" he's not enjoying himself, even though he greatly appreciates the sentiment that everyone is there celebrating him.

That new agenda crap is NOT Star Trek. Period.

@@Emilysbrother1 she didn't even see the one where broccoli was hooked up to the holodeck with that crazy helmet??
I still die laughing when Troi tells Warf that she thought he wanted to be alone on his birthday and hit himself with a pain stick or something and when she smirked and laughed, I die laughing. I think that was Marina breaking character, but they kept it in because it was so genuine.
That yelp Worf gives when Troi kisses him 😂
Worf did go hard into his character.
I did notice his blue eyes, but didn't put it together. Thanks.
11:02 - I missed that the first time. Thanks.
RIP Patti Yasutake
TNG episodes that are "what the hell is going on?" really are the best. Cause and Effect, Remember Me, Parallells.
All Good Things is probably one of the best finales of any TV series out there. An amazing wrap up of such a long running show.
"Marvel eat your heart out" to the multi universes?! Cassie is the GOAT!!!!
OMG when she said that... I knew then that she had graduated.....
“This isn’t memory loss…. He’s trippin’!” - she cracks me up sometimes with her random lines haha.
Actually, in real life, Brent Spiner's eyes ARE blue, so the scenes where his eyes were blue, are not contact lenses, those are his real eyes.
I noticed Data's eyes are different years later, after multiple rewatches
"The bridge"... I saw what you did there.
@@TheFinancialAdvocacyPodcast completely unintentional but I like how you think 🤣
It's funny that you point that out because Jonathan Frakes has worked on the most Star Trek shows either as an actor, director, or both. He really is a sort of bridge for the entire franchise.
@@shuboy05 he’s also one of the sweetest people I have ever met at a convention. If you ever get the chance I highly recommend meeting him.

Yep, one of the best episodes not just of TNG, but of all Trek.
So popular they decided to base a whole show on the premise.
Sito wasn't a new character, which made her appearance and apparent death much more surprising.
@@wiredtardis Did she watch the other episode?
@@andreasvogler1875 No, I don't believe so
The conversation in “The Pegasus” between Captain Picard and the former captain of the Pegasus… Picard already told Riker about noticing that he stood up to Captain DeSoto. Interesting reference all the way back to “Encounter at Farpoint”, during a scene shortly after Riker reconnected the saucer section and the rest of the Enterprise.
Also, this episode has always reminded me of the myth of the Philadelphia experiment.
Oh, good call, I hadn't made the Philadelphia experiment connection before, but there are a lot of similarities.
The episode was inspired by the Dirk Pitt novel Raise The Titanic.
*LOWER DECKS:* The deep relationship and life lessons between Sito Jaxa (The First Duty) and Worf makes this outstanding and heartbreaking.😢
RIP nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake)
There isn't an ounce of truth to this statement. Stewart was never planning to leave the show.
Parallels was one of my favorite episodes. I like it when there are mysteries to be solved when the audience is kept in the dark as this episode did.
Bajorans are part of the main storyline of StarTrek Deep Space 9, a spin-off series that were already on air during the last season of the Next Generation.

"Lower Decks, Lower Decks, Lower Decks"

Lower Decks is a top 5 episode for me…and the perfect bridge to Deep Space 9.
The first would be Alice in Wonderland.
Imo wizard of Oz is a magical realm, not an alternate universe.

Lower Decks is one of my favorites!
Lower Decks is such a cool episode too. Dan Gauthier has a role. Plus we get a character from an earlier episode making a return
I really love the comedy/ideas presented in the Parallels episode.
We had met the Bajorain's before, plus the seventh season of TNG was running at the same time as the second season of Deep Space Nine (which you REALLY need to watch next), and the Bajorian/Cardassian races were key figures in that series.
That and all the episodes with Ensign Ro that got skipped, apart from Cause and Effect.
re: Worf and Diana.
Deep space nine is just magnificent. Reacting to that would be the best thing since sliced bread 😂.
DS9 was great, but reacting to it would be hard for her. The show get's really complicated in later seasons with the war and all, and it would be really difficult for her to just watch select episodes.

@happyhedgehog6450
There are plenty of one-shot episodes she could watch, but it'd be a shame bc she'd miss the narrative arc and that's what made DS9 great. That and hurting Miles O'Brien
She should just watch Rom and especially Nog's arc.

But suddenly, through a warping of crazy events, I found myself dancing with Troy, then sitting in a booth with my arm around her taking selfies. I still have the photo and do miss my Star Trek friend...
*Not to turn the blade in the wound but: It’s a bit normal you did not see Worf’s and Troi’s potential romance coming since you did not watch all the previous episodes; but had you, you would have seen a few hints here and there, including the episode that was referenced in this one, when Worf damaged his spine and he and Troi had a few small moments.*
*”Lower Decks” also had a great link back to an episode you did not get to see when the incident ensign Sito was involved in at the academy was the subject of the episode… And even involved Wesley Crusher! *I love Jonathan Frakes’ acting in “Pegasus”, especially in the scene where Picard grills Riker about the mutiny: Frakes body language is COMPLETELY different than his usual assured self. It’s really as though Frakes played it as who Riker was back when he was an ensign.*
*_”MUTINYYYYYYYY!”_** 😂 Mutiny never sounded better!* 🤣👍👍
*”Lower Decks” is one of the most innovative episodes in ALL OF TELEVISION HISTORY: How often does any show break away from it’s main cast to flesh out characters that are usually overlooked so much that they are virtually invisible and not even an afterthought on the show!*
*And now, all that is left is the ultimate finale… 😭😭😭 Too soon!*
I believe the Academy episode that explains the incident Sito was involved in (along with Wesley) was called The First Duty
LaValle in Lower Decks is played by Dan Gauthier. He also played Lt McKay on Tour of Duty.
This pick of episodes for s7, really makes you wish season 5 episodes for viewing would have included The First Duty and Disaster

Worf's reaction at 10:13 when Deanna kisses him will forever make me laugh no matter how many times I watch Parallels.

I’ve seen “Parallels” a jillion times and I never noticed that Data’s eyes change to blue in one reality until now.
