Maximus returning home is a timeless event. A scene like this could be set in any part of the world, in any culture, in any period in history, and it would hit the same.

Something I never noticed before this reaction (despite watching this movie more than five times) is that Maximus’ armor, the silver embossing on the chest piece? Shows a pine tree, two facing horses and sheltered beneath the tree? A woman and child.

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it in the theater (and I saw it as many times as I could afford in the theater before it left, and many times since) it's just... a moral, honest man who wants nothing more than to go home and love his family. "Go to them" gets me every time

Hello, check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armante Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples.
Directed by Ridley Scott. Thank you, Chris.

Luciano Pavarotti sings a song called "Il Gladiatore" that always resonated deep within me: it was many years before I acknowledged that the film came before it.
Regarding your question on performers at the end of their lives, there are two examples that always come to mind: Burgess Meredith in "Grumpier Old Men", and Johnny Cash performing the song "Hurt". They feel like two sides of the same coin.

Since you do TV SERIES ... you should react to *BABYLON 5* ... the (IMO) best written series ever, because it STARTED OUT WITH A FIVE-YEAR-ARC ... and seasons 3 and 4 were written by one man only (the first time that has been done). They won two HUGO awards ... with 45 minute episodes against big budget movies!
After you are done compare the writing to "modern garbage" like Loki, Ahsoka or The Acolyte ... and include the BUDGET in those considerations, which was just $650.000 per episode for Babylon 5 (adjusted for inflation that's ~$1,5 million today).
*This should make clear what is missing for TV series these days!*
[Babylon 5 isnt perfect, because there are quite a few plot holes due to actors leaving the show or JMS simply screwing up some things ... but the general plot is breathtaking, with several high points each season. The sets are also pretty crappy, but they were the first to really use CGI in a TV series ... and THE ACTORS ARE "LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE" for their acting and chemistry.]

The truly amazing thing about this movie is not known by most viewers. Oliver Reed (Proximo) died of a heart attack while they still had about 1/4 of the movie still to film! Using film from the editing room floor and some cleaver special effects, Reed 'finished' the film and allowed Djimon Honsou's character to survive at film end (he originally did not). Just amazing.

Funnily enough, in real history the thumbs up meant to kill your opponent. It's easier for us to understand this way though. Such an incredible movie, I went in just expecting great fights, which it has in spades, but I left just full of cinematic bliss.

The amount of times I said to myself "you're not there yet" ... whenever you were shocked by something on the screen ...
"Killing the entire family" is a TRADITION, because AVENGING YOUR FATHER'S DEATH was also traditional in greek and roman mythology.
