Top 10 DON'Ts when Growing Orchids - tips for orchid beginners
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- Today we will talk about the top 10 DON'Ts when growing and caring for orchids, so here they are:
1. Don't water orchids from above!
Water left standing in the crown and between leaves can cause rotting. If you manage to wet the orchid, take a paper napkin and remove the water as best as you can.
2. Don’t leave water in the orchid dish, or decorative container
Orchids don’t like to have wet feet as they say. Make sure you remove all the excessive water, so drain the orchid pot as best as you can.
3. Don’t water orchids with ice
Orchids are exotic plants, at least the vast majority of them. Ice cold water can seriously damage orchid roots, so use lukewarm water, even if you use tap water.
4. Don’t separate pseudobulbs individually
Pseudobulbs store energy and nutrients, they are an orchid’s batteries. The more connected pseudobulbs an orchid has, the more energy it will have to grow faster and stronger, so never separate individual pseudobulbs.
5. Don’t use regular potting soil with orchids
The majority of the orchids you can buy are epiphytic plants, this means they do not grow in soil, but in the air, clinging to trees and branches. Use bark chips as a beginner, it is the safest media.
6. Don't place orchids in direct sun
Orchids in general have pretty fragile leaves when it comes to direct sun an overheating. Place orchids in bright shade to avoid damage.
7. Don’t mist orchid flowers
If in some cases misting leaves can benefit orchids, misting flowers is never a good idea. Water droplets can produce mold spots or patches on the flowers.
8. Don’t cut aerial roots
Some orchids just seem to grow roots in the air, especially Phalaenopsis. It’s normal and natural. Leave them be, they are important for the orchid.
9. Don’t cut healthy canes or pseudobulbs
As I said, they are the batteries of orchids, the less canes an orchid has, the slower it will grow, if it will have energy at all. Leave the green canes and pseudobulbs alone.
10. Don’t neglect orchids
Don’t think that just because they are plants, they don’t need attention. The more attention you give to your orchids, the faster you will spot problems and even have greater chances of curing them. Give your orchid a look daily or every few days at least. Even if she is not in bloom, your orchid still needs your love.

..because orchids don't all grow upright in nature like we keep them in pots, so water doesn't pool. They also don't get rained on with tap water, they're also in the breeze at all times and the rain forest in not as 'sterile' as our living rooms. These are just very few things that makes livingrooms alien habitats for orchids, incorporate temperature, humidity, bacterial climate, etc., so it's easy to see why things just don't work the same. Hence why we get crown rot and maybe the ones in nature not as often. I think I anticipated your top question right? 😜 ps: for rotting issues advice, when it will happen, just type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl orchid rot' and you'll find some more videos on it. Rot is the No. 1 ailment in cultivation, so you're highly likely to deal with it at some point. Good luck!
Also just reminding you that in the description you will find additional links related to today's video and also links to my Orchid Care for Beginners series, Care Tutorials for Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Oncidiums, etc., links to products I use & more! I receive so many comments and messages daily on all my platforms, it is impossible for me to get to all, but I try to link videos on the most common questions in the descriptions of my videos. You can also search for answers on almost ALL orchid related topics by typing in the RUclips search bar 'missorchidgirl' followed by the orchid subject you want to learn more about! I have many many videos and I think you'll find a video from me on the subject, just in case I don't get to answer your comment. Thank you! 😘🧡

I always wanted an orchid. I finally got my first one. A beautiful white and purple moth orchid. I am crocheting an orchid hammock for it to hang in like it would in a tree.

"even if not in bloom, they still need your love and attention" life lessons.
Even though some of my orchids are barely clinging to life, I will NEVER give up on any of them.
Unconditional love
I'm a new orchid mom and super scared to do anything. Glad I ran into your channel.
It's no surprise that orchid growers refer to their plants as 'chids. In their own unique way, orchids are as complex as we are. They, like us, are at the top of the evolutionary stack. Growing most orchids IS simple, and the hardest part is knowing what NOT to do.
BTW, welcome to the best addiction on Earth. You'll do fine.
My mom told me to put a little water in the pot and I listened before watching this and I’m freaking out now!! 😭😭😭
My grandmother had a window full of orchids that bloomed 3-4 times per year. Her main advice? Don't fuss! Honestly, just give the pots a soak every two weeks and they'll be happy enough.
Listen to all the clever advice from more knowledgable people, but also just... Don't be scared! If you hydrate them every two weeks the plants will live. And happy plants may just bloom for you. Several times per year. (But really: DO listen to clever advice when it comes to the potting mixture. Something that is free-draining but also moisture-retaining. That's what I've heard - and also what this video seems to be saying.)
@@CopenhagenDreaming how do you water them properly? She said don't water from above or inside the pot.... I'm so confused!!!
@@jensnow3193 I water all my potted plants by simply letting them sit in the plastic pots in a few inches of water in the kitchen sink for 15-60 minutes (depending on when I remember to take them out again!). Then I let them drain for a bit before putting them back in their decorative pots. That way you get the soil and roots hydrated and you avoid standing water in the pots that might lead to rot.
But watering in the pot is also okay, as long as you pour out any excess water after the plant and soil has soaked up whatever moisture it needs. (15-30 minutes should do it.)
My store had $20 orchids and i bought it. Then I did research on how to care for them. I quickly went to lowes and bought it everything it need it, I spent like 60 bucks lol. I said to it "i love you orchid, I got you all this, I hope this pleases you and you give me pretty green leafs and flowers "
I was just given a "just add ice" orchid. But I knew enough to not to! So here I am. Learning how to keep this thoughtful gift alive.
I'm a botanist & this is the BEST orchid advice I've seen. Thanks!
I have been watching your videos for a year now and my orchid is finally going to bloom after 2 years of caring for it. Thank you.

Hello! I have a number of orchids growing in my classroom. My students have adopted the Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Dendrobiums, Encyclea, and Brassavola as their own! I teach them tips on identifying and caring for "their orchids" after watching your tutorials. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. Please accept our appreciation from Georgia, USA.

+Lee S. Hello Lee, thank you so much for writing to me, this makes me really happy and gives me more motivation to keep making videos :D I am so happy my videos help you and your students and please feel free to share whatever video you like best :D happy orchid growing!
Beautiful to hear, I wish you were one of my son's teachers. I really do. You are a fine example of humanity.
My son bought me my first Orchid and brought it to me on Mother's Day 2016. It had 4 blooms and 2 buds on it. As of today, July 3, 2016 it still has all of the original flowers and the buds bloomed as well. I have the Orchid on my desk at work. It must be very happy! I'll just keep doing what I'm doing! I LOVE it so much!! :)
Congrats, think they look spectacular :D
I hope you've still got it, your son would be so happy, children love getting good presents .
I guess once you own the orchid you can never stop loving it. I too have few but I need to trim it for a better growth. 🇨🇦
I was given an orchid 6 years ago, I've repotted it once but it's in the original orchid mix it came in with a bit of compost on top. It flowers constantly for half the year then all the flowers drop and the cycle begins again - I water it when I remember. last year it developed a keiki which I've only just separated and repotted. It's a pretty bonkers plant! It seems to thrive when I don't fuss over it.
I need to know what species it is please tell me.
I have a orchid that (with VERY careful observation) didn’t need water for a month. It’s kinda weird, because my other orchid needed water every other day or else she’d go limp. Orchids are weird.
I love Phalaenopsis but I cannot make it flower again after I buy them.. please help!!

Thank you for this! My stupid self bought four orchids because they were on sale 😅 I’m experienced with plants, but have never owned an orchid before, so I needed this!
This is to add to what OrchidGirl said:
If you don't know what to do with it, leave it alone. Water it when the roots look silver (no more green). For me it's every 2-3 weeks, for others it's every week, depending on your geographical location. You'll learn by observing it for a while. To water it put it under the sink facet for 30 seconds (or until roots turn green) and let the water evacuate completely before you put it back in its decorative pot. Alternatively, if you left it for weeks without water (yeah, it happens when people have a life) you can add water in the decorative pot until the brim and one hour or so later (no more than 24h though) evacuate it completely.
Place it on a windowsill facing east or north, acceptable west if the sun is not strong (good if the light is filtered by a tree) but definitely not south. If all you have is a south windowsill put it 1-1,5 meters away from the window, on some furniture. If the leaves stay plump and green don't change its position until next year (where if they fail to rebloom in November they may need more light).
Don't fertilize, mist (unless you enjoy unclean windows), change soil, chop anything except for the dried up spikes. Just leave it be. Advanced notions take time to master and are worthless, even detrimental, if you haven't learned how to water and where are the sweet spots for orchids in your house. I am a very busy person with an active life and plants are the last thing I worry about, though I like to have flowers nearby. Through trial and error I found the only plants I can actually keep are orchids of all types. Easiest maintenance ever for flowering plants, blooms last for 3 months and some start again on side spikes in the summer. I had one in continued bloom for 3 years until I forced her to rest by changing her place. The most difficult is to get the first to rebloom. Once that happens, congrats. You've learned the basics and figured out the most important thing: placement.
Why are the green leaves splitting, just receive this gorgous ohoird and do not want to lose it.
I had no idea, I was doing every single Dont on your list. You saved my plant from doom.
Wish i had watched this video before I started misting my orchid.
Great video

Thank you for these great tips. I got an orchid a month ago for Mother’s Day. The directions said to water with 4-5 ice cubes. I did find that odd being that orchids are tropical so I decided not to use ice. My orchid had already dropped it’s flowers and it’s leaves were droopy and limp when I got it. Now my orchid has perky shiny leaves and is sprouting new growth!
"The best fertilizer is the gardener's shadow". I love that quote, and it is so fitting for orchids because its true! Love the new intro song!
***** indeed, whoever said neglect was good for them clearly.. was referring to cacti lol
@@MissOrchidGirl I resemble that insinuation..... :)
I got an orchid from my late grandma and I'm terrified of killing it, so these videos are really helpful. Thank you!
Hi Dani, thank you very much for your video. I was given a mini Phael orchid by my students. It seemed to be in good condition with lovely flowers, but over time the leaves have become leathery, the flower spikes have browned and the roots do not look healthy. Using your videos I've been able to understand what I might have done wrong (under-watering, not enough light) and now might be able to save her. Fingers crossed!
I am new with orchids and happy I came upon your channel! This video is particularly helpful and a MUST SEE for everyone new to orchids 💘
I rescued an orchid from Walmart 3 days ago this was very helpful considering the last orchid I had was 4 years ago... Anyways now I'm also in the orchid hobby thanks to your channel!!
Thank you for this, almost buried my new plant in regular soil
I’m an Orchid lover too I inherited from my Mom who traded orchids from natives who lived in the mountains of Mindanao . Actually natives cut the branches where the beautiful orchids grow. waling waling is he best because large flowers can continue opening when hung with indirect sunlight..
where were you 3 years ago!?!? I'm a serial killer lol I've killed 4 orchids 1 mini rose. thank goodness for you!!! I got a new orchid for valentines day from my husband and I'm binge watch your videos lol thank you so much love! 😘
As for potting mix I find it is important to find out if your orchid in question is epiphyte, terrestrial, or semi-terrestrial. Terrestrial and semi-orchids prefer less airy and more moist medium, so avoid coconut husk chunck based mixes.
Thanks, also the gypsy jazz backing music was a treat
I mean, clearly you are the orchid girl but I am just loving that cheery, fun background music, it’s a dangerously addictive combination and your very well spoken, great vid, thanks for the help
Thank you for all of that. I'm on my 3rd orchid. The first one I killed by fertilizing, it died quite quickly actually. The 2nd was a surprise, found growing beneath my old spruce tree, in Ontario Canada, which would return each year..... an Epipactis Helleborine, not native but can occasionally be found growing wild in wooded areas. First and last I'd ever seen. The 3rd I've just purchased, simply called a mini orchid from my grocer, but I adore it's sweet pale green w magenta flowers and will do my best by it 💗💚
I’ve just bought a beautiful looking orchid from Tesco, to brighten up my kitchen. Thanks very much for tips. This beautiful specimen now has a chance of survival, and it may even flourish.
Always such practical and good advice. I think I'm guilty of loving my orchids too much. I have a large 10+ year old dendrobium that has only bloomed once. I'm working on getting it to bloom again! Thanks, Dani!
I just acquired my first Orchid and knows nothing about growing Orchids. Thanks for my first Tutorial on what not to do. I hope I will be able to see more tutorials and advice in the future. Thanks again.
wow i just recently bought a moth orchid, but I didn't think it would be so complicated compare to the usual house plants XD
Thank you for the extensive information for us beginners
You are welcome :) indeed an orchid is different, but not complicated :) good luck and I hope you'll enjoy your orchid for many many years!
Bought my first orchid and have watched multiple videos on orchids and orchid care. Your video was simple and easy to understand. Thank you.
Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot to improve the health of my orchids here in Australia.
I was just gifted my first orchid. She is pretty mature with 8 blooms and 4 buds. I love her so dearly! Her tag told me to use ice cubes, I did that once. Afterwards I decided that didn't make much sense at all. I did some more research and found misting would be the best option. So I misted her a few times a day all over! Poor girl 😥 what I'm trying to say is, your page has been SO helpful. I can't even tell you how much I already love this plant. With your help I can't wait to see how long I have her ❤️❤️
I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
I just got my first orchid on Valentine’s Day and I love it! One if the blooms fell out today but everything else is still looking beautiful
Thank you for your valued comments on orchids. I have learned alot from you, I won't be throwing any more orchids away. Now I now what to do. Once again thank you . Regards Richard Weir in Australia.
Great video! Very good that you brought up the "watering with ice" thing. As I'm sure you have already seen, there's a company that adopted this as a marketing strategy, and they have lots of videos claiming they should be watered with ice cubes. This idea seems to have come from interior decorators that insist on planting phals on large decorative pots without any drainage, and they sell those large, beautiful flower arrangements that are totally unsuitable for orchids, and the only way they came up to keep the orchid barely alive for some time is to add ice cubes on the top of the media. But this eventually will kill the orchid. The orchid will live just long enough for the customer to enjoy it while it flowers, at what point many people unfortunately throw them away and get a new one. It's unfortunate that they spread this disinformation around, because they reach many people who will believe them, because they speak confidently and pass an image of authority on the subject. Hopefully you will get through to a much larger audience. :)
Andrea Soilander I know, I would like to confront them about that but.. well there is no use, they are a large company. Anyway if you look on their website in the blog, people are asking why their orchids are dieing. They reply that they are not, they just go dormant, that is why the leaves are limpy.. pathetic.. anyway, this is why we content creators (read youtube orchid nerds) have a job right? lol
MissOrchidGirl Yes, I agree, it's a pathetic explanation! And they know quite well they are wrong and they're deceiving people. "Orchid nerds" is a great term! LOL! I love it! I am myself a big time orchid nerd and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I do a fairly extensive amount of reading in the subject, and I besides collecting orchids I also buy books and magazines on the subject, and I devour information from the internet. There are quite a few very good resources available, and forums, both international forums and my local orchid society's forum discussion forum, magazines and care sheets. Most people just want to buy a pretty orchid and later wonder why doesn't it bloom, and some think you must have a green thumb to cope with them, but actually the key is information and a lot of study. So in the end, to be a successful orchid grower one has to become an orchid nerd! :))
Andrea Soilander indeed hehe well said :P and also you need to like them, they feel when you are not impressed and go bad on you hahaha :P
MissOrchidGirl They also can smell fear! :) hehehe
Andrea Soilander bhahahaha yes I think they can!
Thanks! I just realised one of my orchids is in intensive care - sun burnt and dry roots. So hopefully bringing it back to life now..
Thank you for this video! I learned a lot. I really love Orchids and I am trying to keep my two orchids alive :) So far so good!
I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?

Thank you so much for this! I had just started watering my orchid with ice cubes because the site I read from said they had done a bunch of studies. but after watching your video I did more research and the only ones recommending you do that are the ones selling them! I want to give my girl the best care I can, and your videos have been immensely helpful. thank you!

This was very helpful. I was trying to find out how I can transfer my Orchid into a larger flower pot due to it growing literally out of its current pot, and what are some of the things I would need to do and how to care for it. I did not know that regular potting dirt would harm the plant. Thank you.

I've learned with my moth orchid, she like it when I changed the orientation from vertical to horizontal facing my east facing window (a foot or two away) she's also pushing out 2 new leaves while dropping flowers (which I know is something that normally happens once the flowers are spent). She's currently in a clear vase with sphagnum moss to help keep her from falling in, I found a low NPK fertilizer targeted for orchids which seems to be working.
Exactly, I was referring to "just add ice" videos on RUclips they recommend this practice to water orchid since ice melts slowly allowing the bark media to soak in water, I wonder if this is a good practice especially if the ice is added on the bark away from the roots, thanks ☺
+Sleiman Houssam well, the choice belongs to each and every one, being that I am not an expert I can only advise you to chose the advice that sounds the most logical to you. From the collector and orchid grower's point of view tough here's my 2 cents: leaving aside cold damage, the ice thing will not work due to a series of factors. First would be that bark is not very water absorbent, if you place an ice on one side, it will only wet that side mostly. Second, water will fall down due to gravity and will remain at the bottom of the pot, creating a pool of water at the bottom while the top will dry pretty fast after the ice melts (considering the bark is fresh and not degraded, mushy and toxic). Sphagnum moss is the only used media that doesn't do this since it is very water absorbent, here's a demonstration ruclips.net/video/4FUtocgDPmU/видео.html so from the start the advice given by the just add ice experts is very inaccurate. Ofcourse not many people know this, once you get to grow different orchids and experiment with different medias you'll get the hang of it. But that matters less, the biggest con of ice is cold damage, but then again you never know until you try and you never learn until you kill a few orchids ;) we've all done it, no worries lol
I’ve had this little orchid and now I’m learning about it. Thank you for your help. I bought the wrong pot so hubby will drill a bunch of holes in it till I can get the once’s I need.
Thank you so much! I am definitely a beginner, and after watching this video I am pleased to know that I haven’t made many mistakes. The one I have made however is misting the leaves. I thought because I live in the north and it gets very dry in the winter time that I would need to mimic a tropical environment which obviously is much more humid. So far I haven’t had problems, but from what you said it’s not a good idea!

I think they're just regular clear plastic drinking cups that she's punctured with a hot awl. I've done this in the past by resting the steel of the awl on the stove element until hot. Melts around the hole you create for a 'soft feel' perimeter. I have a few from yard sales but a craft/specialty/leather or hardware store may have them for you.
(oh gosh, 4 years late lol)

@@JD-et2fe When I saw that with mine, I knew immediately not to follow the directions that came with it. What nonsense!
Thank you for the info. I was gifted a huge dendroloium loddigesi and thought I should cut it down. After watching your video I realized that would be the worst thing I could do. I will buy it the correct soil and carefully put it in a large pot where the roots can breath. Right now they are buried. No cutting. ❤️
Thank you for all your ten tips I have never given a plant ice before that's for my G and t.
Thank you for sharing how to treat orchids with root rot

So thrilled to see your video about Orchids Thankyou Denise Bell
Beautiful! THANK you soo much. Well informed.
Thank you for posting this! I’ve been all over the place trying to see if they need the mulch to drain.
There seems to be some confusion regarding some topics in this video. Regarding watering with ice: that is a selling point designed to make watering more appealing. But watering with ice is just like offering your pet ice instead of water. It will get the job done, but in a cruel, risky way. Also about leaving water in the crown, as in nature it rains. Orchids absolutely don't grow like we grow them in nature, they adapted to avoid water pools in the crown and leaves. I explain a lot more here ruclips.net/video/b2Tz40w9Rbk/видео.html You can also learn about orchids from an authority, such as the American Orchid Society, if my videos don't hit the mark www.aos.org/ In the end we all want to be good, responsible Orchid parents 😁

I also think maybe that's because they want the poor thing to die, so you'll buy another! I'm glad I found this video. My orchid is still pretty healthy. Thank you!
MissOrchidGirl using ice makes the orchid think it is dying so it blooms and dies.

@Eve Mens Depends which one you have and what growing medium it grows in. Generally, if it's growing in a bark medium, fill larger container than the pot the orchid is already growing in, with lukewarm water (room temperature) and submerge about half way. Leave the orchid in for about 20 minutes. Take it out, drain it, place it back.
If the orchid grows wrapped in moss, have look. If it's dry, do the same as above.
How often? once a week for moss, twice a week if grown in bark medium. However, those are not carved in stone. It depends on climate/environment your orchid live.
I live in cold area and have orchids in both mediums. I also feed all my orchids with a doze of very diluted orchid fertilizer solution once a week all year round while they soak in the sink.
This works for me and my orchids. Good luck :-)
i thankyou for this video my husband bought me an orchid for mothers day and i am new to this plants but your info. just helped me alot so thanks again
my orchid loves ice cubes, especially the cherry kool-aid ones
subbed ,very informative, now i whould redo my orchids, i have just replanted my orchids and mixed it with soil just to fill up the big pots a I used thanks a lot for this great tip. it will save my 12 orchids plants.....bye for now I have to buy soils for orchids.!!!
I just found you, thank you SO much!!!!!! I’m excited for future orchids I will own (I have 2)
I have two orchid plants for over 3 years now. Still going strong and blooming beautifully. The only thing I ever did was put lukewarm water in the pot so the roots get soaked and leave it for 15-30 minutes. Then drain the pot completely leaving no water on the bottom. And it is good to go for 1-2 weeks. I also try to keep the air moisture up at least 50% on the hygrometer.
haha this was fun! you should do some more videos like this :D and I absolutely agree with Astrid, this video should get really popular :D
I am going to get a new orchid again! Maybe it will live! I have always loved them! Thank you for your knowledge!

Very helpful vid thanks :)
Thanks for the tips about orchids , it’s a big help for me
Help my husband watered my phalaenopsis orchids and left the water standing in bottom of pot ... Now the roots coming out the bottom look all soggy and soft, what do I do? Can I cut the roots coming out the bottom of the holes in the container? I am all new to orchids !!!
Hi, it's ok, the roots that come out might die due to various reasons, it doesn't mean the roots inside will die too. If the roots are mushy then yes you can cut them. If not, leave them be, they might be ok still :)
SO MANY PEOPLE water orchids with ice! Even plant store owners! WOW thanks so much
