I just saw this movie while on a date. it was beautiful. It felt like the most culturally and lore accurate viking movie that has ever been created in the film industry, and the most authentic out of the other ones i've seen. Even the inaccuracies that people have pointed out were played out better than in other movies. I want to go again and again. The way they portrayed Odin and introduced him made me cry. it was so perfect, showing his presence through crows is very accurate. the director and writers did a very good job.
Did you see the crows flying around? In mythology,crows were the eyes of Odin on earth.
My most anticipated movie of the year without a doubt. I really really hope that this does well at the box office, because we rarely get movies like this with such a high budget.

just saw the movie, and absolutely recommend it. Haven't seen a movie like this in a long time, so authentic and RAW. There were certain scenes that directly "transported" you into the movie. Everyone was brilliant and it looked so good.

@@lP-bd6hi I haven't seen the vvitch so not sure about that movie. I wouldn't say it's at the same length as the lighthouse but that movie was all about being weird and trippy you know? But this movies trippy scenes aren't only trippy for the sake of it and being confusing they all have a purpose. If you've watched the trailers, the scene with the Valkyrie is without a doubt the best "trippy" scene. It's absolutely stellar.

@@you12praise85 the action Is sparse but each time amazing. Extremely gory and brutal I might add but felt so real, like there's a weight behind every swing and the characters moan and breathe heavy it adds to it so much. Don't expect a massive battle with thousands of troops in this though

Hopefully not grimy in the sense that people didn't know how to clean and wash, which films often do with old eras but certainly weren't true for people of those times.
For those interested, the music is from the group Heilung. They are fantastic and have tour dates coming up in the US. I highly recommend searching RUclips for their live LIFA show. I always describe them to my wife as Viking Metal. :)

I just saw this at the movies the other day here in Denmark and I gotta say that it was quite the psychedelic experience! Very grounded and otherworldly at the same time. The Northman definitely needs to be seen on the big screen.

movies like that always bomb in the box office. Only TROY managed to surpass those expectations costing 170 mil to make and making 500 million world wide. That was with a stellar cast and a VETERAN director at the helm. This movie is going to bomb hard.

The Northman is an extraordinary movie, engaging from beginning to end. Alexander Skarsgård is incredible in this film, and a stellar cast. The cinematography is exceptional.
The Lighthouse is another masterpiece, this guy is quickly becoming my favorite director.
Robert Eggers is on his way to reach the title of "one of the best directors working today"
He already has.
The guy has only done 2 films before this and is already close to that title, he’s an absolute master in his class and I’ve no doubt this will cement that status!

Robert Eggers has cemented himself as one of the best directors of our generation with 3 movies. Each better than the last, and his first was incredible.
So excited to see his “Nosferatu”.
His first was very overrated. Lighthouse was a big step up.

I'm not sure his Nosferatu remake will happen. He says he keeps trying to make it, but something holds him back or stops him every time. He even gave an interview where he says it's like the universe telling him not to make the movie. And honestly, I'd say it's better that he makes more original films rather than remaking stuff.

I’m very disappointed to hear that this movie didn’t do to well in the box office….It’s an absolute masterpiece of a film. Truly stunning and captivating, every second of the film is pure eye candy.
It was expected , though. Indie movies like this usually don't do well at the box office. But yeah, I'd rather go to this movie the 10th time than watch a marvel flick once.
They should of released it at mainstream cinemas for longer. Here in nz there was only one obscure theatre you could watch it at for one viewing/one day only

I’ve seen it 3 times and there were other people there every time where as Dr Strange has been empty several time I’ve gone and poked my head into a different theater on my way out

This movie was so good. Almost unreal. Like a dream that you don’t know wether it’s a nightmare or an epic saga. Maybe both. I was stunned.
Some of the shots in this are gorgeous. Especially the wide landscape shots. Wow.
If anyone's curious the runes at the end spell out (I'm pretty sure at least I'm a bit rusty) Amlóðasaga, meaning Amlóði's/Amleth's Saga

Incredible movie, as a huge fan of Norse mythos this was an amazing homage. Absolutely love Eggers beautiful and brutal style. He did Norsemen of old proud with this one
I didn’t even know they still made trailers that relied on artistry editing synched with music that refrained from revealing the entire story. Wow!! Well done, well done. That was excellent.

Instant classic. Get to the theater so you can really be immersed, everything is perfect in this movie IMO. You'll kick yourself later for not seeing it on the big screen.........

Loved this movie. A mixture of Hamlet, Macbeth, Conan the Barbarian and a touch of Lord of the Rings. Amazing landscapes - all filmed in Ireland! Just what I want!
Actually the main character in this story was the inspiration for Shakespeare to write Hamlet

@Oonga Boonga its the legend Hamlet was based off. to just write it off by simply saying "oh its Conan" is a disservice to both movies. and if all youre looking at is the story, in a visual medium, youre missing about 90% of the movie.

Best decision I've made and best film I've seen in a long time! An epic journey is an understatement.
I could have easily gone another 4 hours no problem.

This movie is in my top three films of all time, with cinematography that is beyond impressive and a score that makes you feel the beat of the drum in your bones. I went and watched it in theaters, and then again on my own TV at home. Both times I was enthralled.
Mark my words, it will define new young cinephiles' understanding of movies for decades to come.
This movie is excellent. To get the absolute most out of it, you need to start watching around 11pm and finish it around 1-2 am. Its so atmospheric. Well directed, written, acted, edited and everything else that makes film great.
This movie was insane. I absolutely loved every second of it. I will say if you arent a fan of robert eggers style you may not like it as much...but jesus i dont know if ive ever left the theater like i did with this one. It leaves you shaking from the intensity of it.

Fantastic film.
The Northman is a Viking version of Braveheart and Gladiator. It is an excellent movie! One of the most violent movies I've seen; that scene raiding the village is hard to watch, but that was reality in those days. The directing and cinematography of the film is excellent ... this trailer is exciting/intriguing to watch and the only words spoken are "Fate has no Mercy ... I cannot escape my Fate". It's a good story, the protagonist (main character) goes through a lot of struggle to find his true self ... his Fate.
This is one of the two Heilung songs I've ever heard (the other being Norupo) and lemme tell you I nearly shit myself when I heard it here.
This is gonna be masterful.

What a great film beginning to end. Capturing the true spirit of the viking, and the berserkers.
I just watched this movie today with my buddy and it’s by far one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. So much detail and depth added compared to most movies these days that are solely produced for quantity over quality. 100% recommend to anyone into Viking movies! Id say it’s as good or better than braveheart!
Northman is way better than braveheart, which was just a mainstream, switch the brain off crap with NO basis in the actual history.

The fact that Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard went from playing an abusive couple in Big Little Lies to play mother and son in The Northman feels weird 😂😂😂
It does kinda feel weird she is not that much older than him. I feel bad for her to play mother to first jason momma now Alexander. Atleast as an Atlantian it was believable if she didnt look that old as they r meta beings but here they r humans.

They probably did it so she could appear young enough early in the film when she's seen in shots with Amleth while he's still a child. They can more easily use makeup to make her look older in the later scenes with a fully grown Amleth than they can use CGI to de-age an older actress for the early scenes.
It's hardly the first time people not that different in age played parent and child. I think Sean Connery was only 12 years older than Harrison Ford, despite playing his father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. If you want a more extreme example, Angela Lansbury played Lawrence Harvey's mother in The Manchurian Candidate, even though she was only one year older than Harvey in real life.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, in the TV series The Jeffersons, Isabel Sanford was 21 older than Sherman Hemsley, so although she played his wife, she really _was_ old enough to be his mother.
As long as the actors look the right age on screen though, it really doesn't matter.
I literally had a mind blank and forgot they were married in big little lies lol.
I'll go to the theaters for this.
