If you want more big budget productions like this rather than a constant barrage of comic book adaptations then please for the love of God go out and support this movie.
You can enjoy THIS movie AND comic book movies at the same time man. Don’t have to dismiss comic book films at all. And yes this movie is phenomenal!
@@Gadget-Walkmen You're missing my point. If you want to see movies like this then we need to support it otherwise all we're going to see is comic book movies because they're financially safe to produce.
@@1.21gigawatts2 not entirely as Robert Eggers unconventional films has always been produced and made and there are plenty of movies out there like this that kind made.
And I have no idea where you getting this idea that “comic book movies is all we’re going to see because their financially safe to produce” because that’s completely not true as they have to be GOOD first or else they will end up like Moribus. A financial ruin and their not going to making more of those mistakes on Sony’s part. I get what you mean do and I do support films like this and we should!
Of course I support movies like this as we can have Eggers masterclass films as well as comic book films that are done well!
@@Gadget-Walkmen Interesting that you used Morbius as an example considering it doubled it's budgetary costs at the Box Office. Big budget art house films often aren't financially viable and thus we are seeing less and less of them in the cinemas. A huge example of this is the Last Duel by Ridley Scott. A masterclass of a film that was a financial flop. The Northman will surely follow suit if more butts aren't put in seats. 80 million in production costs and it hasn't even made 25 million back. Studios aren't going to sink large quantities of money into projects like this if it's not going to make them a profit. This is why I said comic book movies are a safe bet. Because 99 percent of the time they will make money. I think you are confusing financial success with critical success.
Also support this to be against the woke sjw inclusionist
Williem DaFoe was born to play these kind of characters, he has a natural weird and surreal vibe that fits perfectly with supernatural roles.

Films like these feel so rare. This will be a timeless classic for me. Robert Eggers and everyone else involved gave it 100%
@Andrew Cookson And thats okay. I know its not something that everyone is going to like. I personally enjoyed the set pieces and background action. The story was rough in some areas but overall was enjoyable. It was interesting trying to see what was real and what wasn't. In their times, these weren't beliefs but rather a reality to them when it came to valkyries and Odin.
I hope we still get more films like these. Robert Eggers is still young so I am impressed so far. Directors like him deserve more opportunities to get better at his art.
Also, some of the complaints you have regarding the "CGI" and "Camera shots" is just his style. Again, not something that everyone will like but to me it gives it this ominous Tim Burton kind of feeling. I like it a lot.
You must be high like every character in this film .. movie was trash ! Story 0 acting 0 .. plot 0 ..
First no story line as to why the father is bad .. the mother did it .. that’s the whole plot twist ? Lol .. who is the crew he raided that village with ? And WHY did he not ask their aid to kill his uncle and take back his land ? Half the men who raided that village could have easily done the job .. just one ship .. didnt need to bran himself a slave and all that bs .. and the most laughable part is that he talks about legacy and lineage and that fuckin stupid tree with dead bodies as it matters !?? He’s fuckin dead and his wife is sent to his kin ? Wait kin ??? Who he couldnt ask to fight with him ? Regardless she will end up getting fucked by some dude or 10 and the kids will belong to someone else .. how stupid is that ? Lol
Movie sucks .. worse one i’ve seen .. ur all here hyping this director like hes the next big thing .. ur taste sucks and ur director sucks even more

Yeah, vikings actually look like vikings.
@@johnlonne7062 It's the desaturated look that gives that impression. Frankly, as much as this looks great, the desaturation of movies and tv shows set in the Middle Ages is really overdone. Im sorry but this film looks like everything I didnt want Eggers to make. It already looks so wildly predicable. Ex A list Hollywood, current A list Hollywood, soon to be A list Hollywood and a story line based around s childhood revenge. We've seen this crap a thousand times over and over again. Enough people will watch it to cover it's expenses but it adds absolutely nothing. "I will avenge you father" fucking hell. Holy fucking shit. He could've skipped on the "A list" actors and saved a whole bunch of money. The Witch, which was an awesome movie, had a budget of around $4 million dollars. I loved how unconventional this movie was. The story writer and directors did not give a single shit about making the characters relatable to the 21st century American audience. They just conducted it like the people back then living in the moment.

This was probably the best historical movie I've watched in a LONG time. It was so unapologetically heathen with no audience-relatable character for people to find a comfort in. Just the brutal reality of these people's worldview - one of war-dancing, magic and the threads of fate to bind it all together. Probably will go see this a second time here soon.
I agree with you. idk if it is based on something historical. But it was brutal. It was like looking into a different worldview. Really nice!

I absolutely agree! I watched this yesterday and loved LOVED just the sheer raw brutality of it. I've always been fascinated by Norse myth/old norse culture so I knew what I was getting into prior to watching this...I was actually looking forward to the film. While the lady sat next to me kept expressing her shock and disgust at some of the gruesome , "weird" parts of the film, I was just sat there going all "wow" cause I have never seen a film that is, as you said, "unapologetically heathen". Eggers did it again! The first film of his I watched was "The Witch (VVITCH)" and I would also recommend that one for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
They did a really good job making this movie. I was really impressed with the story and how they put it all together. Eyes were stuck to the screen the whole time watching it. This film is a masterpiece!
It was marketed all wrong. People thought it was just some random brutal 'dude-movie' and it's not.
It's an important milestone in showing the old norse perspective on life in a respectful and true manner.
It is a reimagined version of the Viking tale that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Why is this not at the center of the marketing?!
Of course it's not historically perfect, nothing is, nothing can be. But films like this are important in the face of things like The Last Kingdom or the Viking series, which twists our heritage into fantasy that seems more like Game of Thrones than anything else, all while flat out rewriting historical events and characters. The Northman is not an actual historical event, it's a story, just like the sagas of its time, a story about fate and destiny. It's true to our past culture and beliefs, which is is highly commendable.
I love the way the fantastical/magical elements of The Northman are left to be questioned, as something that occurs only in the mind.
And the music ...wow! What a film!
How was it marked wrong?
@Thrawn23. A year late but it was marketed as an action movie, look at this very trailer, the1 battle sequence in the 2 hour and 15 min run time is shown 4 times in the trailer and that reflects in the reviews, IMDB user ratings littered with people giving out that its too slow, and not enough happens, its a slow, methodical character piece set in a world of norse mythology where the values and the religion if the time are shown to be true, the trailer makes it out to be a non stop swords and saddles battle sequence which it isnt.

I watched this recently, and I wasn't disappointed. Actually this trailer didn't quite convince me, but the movie did! An impressive experience. Robert Eggers tried to recreate the mental world of the Vikings with their belief in the reality of their gods and the power of fate. And besides, this story is based on the original Danish legend of prince Hamlet, but naturally very different from Shakespeare's version.
First will be last. Last will be first. Amleth Hamlet. It's a bible film with Christian swines.
It begins AD895. First last/last first. 2291-1229=167+895. 1229-895=2x167. Twin 167. Amleth gets twins. Devil's bible year 1229. It's a devil's bible film.
It's just another 9/11 film. Same stuff all over again.
A hamlet doesn't have a church. After that crashed 9/11 flying horse made of human body parts with twin heads is nailed to that building the hooknose prince goes funny. Then they stand there in front of twin 'church' windows'; the haystacks with the Jesus fish shape tops. Gothic arches. They are in Satan's open air church.
Amleth can be king when he kills the others and when he humps his mother. He doesn't want to. That is dumb.
YES! Finally a Viking helmet. As a Swede, who have travelled all around the country this summer, visiting old Norse burial mounds and museums, inspecting objects who have been found - I gotta say that this looks absolutely spectacular. The costumes, the music, the mystical vibe. The Vikings and their Norse ancestors (from the Bronze Age and Vendel period) were professional craftsmen who created astonishing swords, armor and clothes. I got a feeling that they will do a great job with this movie.

Oddly, the villain guy Claes Bang is danish, so he's also a true viking
Their Dad Stellan is pretty good too.
@@falledreng is he? Thats cool. His name sounds pretty Dutch to me.
@@yoloswaggins9989 he is. Well, both language share some common Germanic ancestry, so I could see why. You do realize Dutch and Danish aren't the same though, right?
Awesome movie. No nonsense, no jokes straight Viking.
Seen this movie 5 times but I still come back to this epic trailer from time to time before the gym to get pumped
Comic stories are great "when they're done well". . This is the Prefect Director, cast, cinematography, storyline, ect.. for a truly epic "CONAN" 9 to 10 "season" series!!
From the earlier E. Howard's; "The Savage sword of Conan the Barberian" I have about 57 of them, and every one is just like this movie! There's is so much great material to make 20 movies like this one. "If they only stick to the entire story"
I loved the frazetta looking like picture in this movie. Great freaking job!!!
“Remember for whom you shed your last teardrop...”
I got SHIVERS. Love to see Björk again in the big screen!
And the Award for “Let me Stun the World with this kick ass trailer” goes to The Northman 🏆

I can't believe this movie underperformed at the box office! This was an absolute cinematic masterpiece! The story. The cast. The sceneries! Gosh it was breathtaking! The entire run time felt so raw and authentic! I don't know much about viking history but this felt that it was depicted accurately as possible. Alexander Skarsgard is a phenomenal actor. He ate Amleth's character. I just couldn't take my eyes off of him.
If anyone who still haven't seen this work of art, just do it. This is the kind of cinema that should be appreciated more. The hard work is evident, it deserves more recognition!!! Bravo 👏❤️
TRUTH
This is an extremely good and underrated movie. It's somewhat abstract and theater-like which is unconventional but an interesting and unique take. Highly recommended
I like how whenever fire or candles are used in scenes Robert Eggers chooses to rely on that light emitting from that source instead of using extra lighting. Gives a more authentic feel for the time period of the movie.
Kubrick
@@TheWayofGrace89 Milsome
@@TheWayofGrace89 wasn’t Barry Lyndon shot with all natural light?
in the lighthouse they used heaps of extra lights though
@beep boop Kubrick used Zeiss f/0.7 lenses developed by NASA to shoot Barry Lyndon in all natural light, candles indoors. And The Revenant was shot all in natural light, in Alaska or somewhere up north, they often only had 4 hours of usable daylight a day.
Believe me guys. This did NOT let down. I ADORED this film, i feel Eggers makes films a lot of people wouldn't dare in terms of authenticity. Go and see it.
I agree, just saw it last night and wow the cinema was silent in amazement during the credits, alexander skarsgard was amazing in this role
I was so disappointed, in this MOVIE ❗FINALLY A CHANCE TO REPRESENT THIS CULTURE IN SOME WAY on the screen, and they absolutely BLEW IT ❗We Never get to see viking movie's, and this was horrible ❗🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪

Wow!! A historically accurate film, without a modern political agenda. That is something we don't see anymore these days. This is a breath of fresh air!
That spear catch is maybe the coolest shit I’ve ever seen.
This film was like breathe of fresh air. Finally something serious, made as possible historically accurate, something which actually touches you, something real. Thanks to everyone who did work on this movie, you did great
UPD. Historically accurate not in terms of storyline) I mean historical authenticity and whole respect to the fact how people did actually look and behave in that times. Ofc it's a little bit exaggerated, it's not historical movie, but still it's made with maximum respect
Did you just call this movie... historically accurate?
@@lucasrob98 it’s accurate in the sense that back then, there were little to no morals, no real ‘good’ guys. It was a time of war, pillaging, and hardship.
@@lucasrob98 what isn't historically accurate?
@@Jigsaw2533 You're kidding right? Even Vikings had more historical accuracy than the Norseman and that's saying something lol
@@lucasrob98 - could you give some examples? :)
We’re blessed to see BJÖRK in a credits sequence once more.
True!!!
Yeah she deserves better than Lars Von Trier
So glad they made a live action of Vinland Saga.
*Embrace masculinity.* This movie is so legendary and epic I cannot even put it into words.
It's a merciless brutal fairy tale about honour, dignity and life choices in the times of kings, vikings, ravens and dark magic. Visuals were beyong dreamy and incredible. Alexander Skarsgard is a total beast. Will be rewatching for sure. *Instantly one of my favourites.*
this movie was real cinema. No franchise attached to it, no over-saturated sequels, nothing. It was fantastic all around. Give it a chance over those comic book movies, please
The ceremony with Ethan Hawke and Willem Defoe barking at each other threw me a bit 😅
A bleak, but well-told story
Haven't watched any marvel made movies in ages, all that superhero crap.
Highly insensitive to POC and many other communities. It has been proven that children’s self esteem gets influenced by role models in movies. Children need inclusion, and that applies POC and LGBTQ+ youth.
@@chamade166 insensitive how?
@@chamade166 okay. I’m bisexual and I get it. I want inclusion in my media too. I’m not bashing MCU or superhero movies, I love them. I do. But I don’t get the correlation between me explaining how the Northman is a good movie to me being insensitive to POC and LGBTQ+ people. I love those movies, I’m just suggesting checking out this one as well

Movie is so good. Deserves even more attention than it did get. WE NEED MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS.
This movie was so fucking epic. It was creepy weird and just a fucking mind blowing movie. Great story Great acting. Had a supernatural element to it. 10/10 movie.
This looks stunning. I love the main cast but choosing veteran actors for support "Hawke, Defoe & Kidman" is genius with the bonus of Bjork adding some otherwordly chemistry to the ensemble :O

Skarsgard went from playing Eric Northman to being The Northman. Full circle moment 🏆
Right!?? I was wondering if this was the Eric Northman origin story.

Some of the shots in this movie look so fuckin’ bad ass. I don’t know what it is about no shaky-cam or no fast-editing with action scenes but they look so much more real when the camera is just there.
I completely agree
You can thank the bourne movies for that shit

I've been waiting to see Alex Skarsgard in a Viking role on the silver screen .. what a cast ! and Robert Eggers will deliver !
His Tru Blood character was named Eric Northman, now he is The Northman. Looks interesting.
Don't forget about "Techno Viking"
I like how the movie is called Northman, and the actor used to play a character named Eric Northman lmao
high iq comment ngl
This movie is 99% Viking sagas, mythology and 1% movie. I just fkn love it!
I’ve absolutely loved Eggers’ last two films, the Lighthouse was even my top film of 2019. I’m so excited to see what he brings with what appears to be a bigger budget and even more experience.
And that's what I liked about Eggers, try something small scale first for an independent movie, once he has a good experience in that, he can go move on to other big studios like Focus Features for this one. Such a talented director, he has potential to be one of the best directors working today but we'll soon find out with more to come from him
I saw The Lighthouse last year after "The Batman" trailer (cos Pattinson is in it and people said you need to watch it to see Pattinons acting skills). Fantastic movie, glad I saw it
The Witch was phenomenal too!!
I honestly see nothing positive in this. This is so beneath him. Surprised this wasnt followed by the Netflix symbol.
Objectively, especially to those who watched past Bong films, The lighthouse was the actual best film of 2019.
I'm frankly most excited to see Bjork back on screen after 21 years! She is as good as an actress as she is as a musician. Her performance in Dancer in the Dark gutted me.

Not only that, I am living with the pain that I now have to wait months to see it.

I went to the cinema with really low expectations. Never in a million years would I expect something like this. The movie was really good. Big respect to the creators
