In this post let's briefly touch on automotive pearl painting, pearl paint, flakes and micro sequence flake.
The most popular automotive pearls come in 2 forms. The first is your powder pearls then your liquid pearls. The difference is nothing much. One is just mixed in a sappy liquid which you scoop out and add to your clear coat.
Pro's and Cons of liquid pearls: As time goes on, you'll have a problem opening your jar because of the pearl mixture getting in between the can cap and jar.
But with dry pearls, you won't have this problem and there still very easy to open and mix into your paints.

Would like to see examples of the different basecoats with same pearl.
My dude, this is hands down the best instructional video on YT!!! Take your talents and open a school instead of giving this away (I can't believe I just said that!). Folks will be able to benefit from a formal education from you. I learned more here than I said in my auto-body classes. GREAT JOB!!
I think you should do a few test panels to see if you like the color. I know those pearls alone will look good but pink and gold mixed may look strange.
Thats cool man~ I think you'll LOVE what we have for you within VIP. No rush, we will be here :) but don't wait too long and kick yourself like some of our other vip members have lol... cheers man :)
You can put any kind of pearl over any color base coat. It's all what you want to do. I would test panels and colors. Think and do what you think may look good and test it! learn more at the site :)
Excellent content and presentation. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the information! Your always right on the money with your info!
You are an amazing instructor! Thank you!

This is a great vid!
Yes you can use any color flake or pearl over any color base. Just imagine what you would like and think what would look good, and test it. You can spray any color pearl over white base coat and it will look cool...
Thanks!!
Awesome thanks tony. I've done a couple of cars and just wanted to double check. Gonna look at getting the VIP package too. I've been on your website a bunch of times just havnt made the jump to VIP yet haha.
Great video thank you!
Great video!
very useful informations.great.
Gear video.... Thanks for the tips... Keep up the good work.
i don't know how old you are but you seem very educated and informative about body work. thanks, great job ///john b. pittsburgh,pa.
More power sir 🤘
You can get either. I like powder, then just measure and add to your mixed clear coat. Plus powder stays good for a long time. The liquid will dry the cap and you'll have problems opening and closing the bottle after a while...
Thank you :)
The one thing I like when doin big flake or medium size flake is use DBC and I lay 2-3 coat of that with flaking. I prefer to use DBC for the fact the flake don't stand up as much it lays flatter. When you put the bigger flake into your clear it tends to stand up so you have to do several coats to Barry it so when your wet sanding and buffing it you don't nip off the tops of the flake and you want it to be flat and smooth as a sheet of glass. DBC is what I suggest when doin big flake before you clear.
+nick Dead Metal Kustumz jones I totally agree and I have these videos in the VIP area of www.learnautobodyandpaint.com thanks for writing in :)
finally!!!!!! i been askin everyone how much pearl dust do i add to a gallon or a quart!im wanting to put 2 coats of clear mixed with the pearl dust, then 2 coats of straight clear for color sand and buff, thanx tony for the info i been lookin for about the pearldust and how much to add, i enjoy all ur videos, and i hate to admit it, im twice as old as you, but u know twice as much as i do! thanx tony, and look for my video im puttin on you-tube after christmas, its a 65 chevy custom truck
Great video
Hey mate. Great video.. what size fluid tip are u using for the big flake?
I would so some test panels. I've done both and they look nice. It all depends on what YOU like. You may not like what I like...
Just test some colors and see what you think looks good. Good luck!
Why not! As long as you have a steady hand when painting, go for it.
I would like to know how to make the zarape effect .....any tips
Hey sir...what color pearl would you use with say a burgundy base coat ?
GREAT Videos!! quick question, Im planning on using the exact white with red pearl you showed, when spraying the clear with pearl powder, do you spray like candy where you walk the entire length, or panel by panel? I want to avoid pearl build up on panel edges
Great informational vids! Best and easiest to understand on the web! Question: If you want to put two different colors of pearl, should you mix them together or apply them in separate coats? I'm doing dark blue basecoat with purple and copper pearl.
Hi, i really like your uploads,,and learn from them. I got a problem, i repainted my car for.first time, and did use blue flakes big ones.on a metallic blue base, but when i put the clear with the flakes down and wanted to wetsand it down like u said. With a p1000 i can see that the flakes that are on top are now a silver like flake. I guess i sand off color of them. But now i got large area with this silver spots all over .. what can i do best to restore it so silver flakes are masked or something. I try to take dremel and little buff disc and compound to buff them out ,,but it takes ages.. plz help thnx Alex
quick question, im going to spray metal flake on my 59, using the standard .015 size flake. I understand taking the filter off, but what size gun tip do I use? I have the 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.2 tip. I heard use the 2.2 tip but wont that gob up the paint job and just make more work for me when I wet sand?
Good video yea an example would be awesome
Hey Tony, what compressor do you use and is there any cheaper way of spray painting with a proper spray gun or do you really have to invest the money?
i'm looking to do a re-paint on my car with the same color. It's a carbon blue, and i just wanted to add something into the clear coat to make the paint really shine and look glossy. What would you recommend?
Hey Pedro
What got you into spraying?
Not sure about pearl but I do know Res or Silver flake looks awesome!
nice video ... keep up the good work. i have one question, can i use flakes in a white base coat paint? and what would the effects be?
Parabéns você é nota 1000 com as dicas e os vídeos
hi buddy what do u suggest mix pearls or flakes with a red solid color ?
Im painting my car, and have selected the color ( Which is a flat white ).
Is it possible to add pearl without it changing the color tone? Thanks
What size tip would I need for the jumbo flake? What size for the micro? And what size for pearls? Just need to know so I can get started and join the VIP! Thanks dude!!!
Can you spray the micro flakes over acrylic enamel paint?
No, but you need a steady hand and proper gun flow. Be sure to keep your 50% overlay. If you want step-by-step guidance and full tech support visit: learnautobodyandpaint(.com) and look at the VIP course.
I'm trying to get a Candy Apple Red finish on an electric guitar, my base coat is yellow, the pearls are fine gold pearl, and my final coats will be clear then red and clear. Will gold pearl create Candy Apple Red or does it give a different colour depending on your perspective to the painted object? last question, can I spray gold Flake over the pearl if I feel like the proper colour won't come out with the pearl, what kind of effect will flake over pearl give if any?
What's the best pearl to use to get a red effect on Maroon?

just want to ask you some questions.i have a black honda civic es7.i want to put pearl micro flakes.can i just spray it over the existing clear coat or should i remove the clear coat first?

Whats up man. quick question a buddy of mine wants me to paint his bike. Its all plastic fairings. I have all the fairings perfect. He bought a single stage paint because it was cheap and the color is yellow. I have some yellow candy and gold candy pearls. Wondering if I could mix the candy pearls into the paint with some good results? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@ingesumadre All in the coming videos... the VIP course, does cover all of this in great detail.
Color variations will be your choice and through your own experiments. To get a good start try painting pearls over white or black base coats. Then move to other colors as you gain courage. We cover a lot of tips and tricks for pearls within VIP. Good luck and look forward to working with you if you decide to join. Stay cool buddy!
hey bro, i am thinking about painting my caddy a cany blue color but i want it to pop. do you tink it would be better to go with a white, or a silver or a gold
Would a micro met powder in silver work or maybe the flakes?
Sounds good man. I would have been nice to see some results (images) as you mentioned each product though just to get an idea of how they'd look. Keep it up!
Are there any pearls you could put over a Tangerine base coat ? ( non metallic , solid orange ) ?
@HowToPaintYourCar what color pearl do you think would look good on apple red candy metallic?
DBC 500 is only a "clear" basecoat so you are going to get the normal "tape edge" after spraying it with the pearl in it. It will protect the base color from "tape tracks" if you apply it over the the panel after your base color is applied.
If you are using PPG's powdered pearls be careful to mix them up really well and strain the crap out of your mix before you put it in your gun. Learn more from our training course over at: learnautobodyandpaint(.)com :)
Can you mix different pearls??
No problem man. Glad you liked it!
Blk base and red pearl works well. Looks like a plumb.
Hey tony my paint I'm gonna use is a dark cherry pearl. When painting to I have to run along the whole car like candy?

Awesome video! :) I would love if you paint my Mustang black as the base color and purple as the second color.... When I get a mustang. Haha great video though. :)
im a spraypainter on cars etc. i was told years ago that most paint tinters cannot be used as a top coat / finish coat BUT pearl can be used as a top coat so im assuming the pearl referred to was the liquid type. I want to do a white pearl over white base on my sons upcoming custom car.
what pearl do i use? powder or liquid. my stockist handles house of kolor etc. Can you buy a straight premixed tin of white pearl ? over a white base ..
I think liquid would be a better option as it would mix be
@iSOBigD Thanks man!
Whats a good economicle base coat clear coat?
Hi Tony I glanced through your web site .The dvd you sell does it explain all about how to deal with metal flakes particularly. What color I should use as a base sequence of applying it over different colors, possible methods, equipment are needed to be purchase to add this a paint body shop. Also some paints have different base such acetone etc,how do I know compatibility among these bases?Thank you in advance, before I buy it I must to know lay outs of product I buy.
I was wondering if you ever heard of the site.. Paint with pearls. I been looking at the "sky blue shimmer candy pearl" they say you can use it as powder coat as well as paint a car. I was wondering if that will work for a project im doing
hi thanx for the info,,, i was wondering how a white base coat with flakes will look like ?? i think their 3 types of flakes. 1. fine like dust,2 medium size, and 3. large flakes..
lol.. yes test it! Some colors will look strange together. Black base with gold pearl can look green in some angles. I say try a orange pearl... or a red. again, TEST it and measure the amount that you test.
You can add it to an intercoat (a clear base) or in the clear like I do. Learn more about all of this at: learnautobodyandpaint(.com)
I bought some "bling" metal flake , orange and red , I tested some over each color , suspended in the clear , and it looked like someone tossed pepper in the paint , unless the light caught it just right , so i`m glad I did a test and not the real deal....i was just wondering if you had ever put pearl down over an orange paint and what color would look best , like I wouldnt put purple over it....yick
@HowToPaintYourCar Thanks man. I was looking online at the spray gun and paint and was thinking, "hey, that's not too bad, maybe I should step it up a notch"...then I saw the prices for compressors. lol

If I paint base coat clear coat and add pearl powder. Do I need to apply a regular clear coat again?
You can use an intercoat . Check out some of videos about it:
www.learnautobodyandpaint.com/how-to-paint-pearl-or-flake-mix-in-clear-coat-or-intercoat/

Where are u located I would like 4 u to do a paint job on my bike silver with red pearl scent
You would do a base clear on it. Go to a paint dealer, then give them that code and they'll make you that paint for your doors. You should check the colors for match before you paint it...learn more on the site: learnautobodyandpaint(.com)
@fifo32 I have, but never bought from them.
