So.. Pearls or Flake?
I'm in Flake it's so nice
Gotta say both are great, but I’m with the Pearl for this one!
Yess
I want to do a white pearl with flakes
both good best mix pearl and flake to make the base
Pearls are much more subtle, just gives an iridescent quality to the color. Personally, I prefer the sparkle of the flakes. But I think it would depend on the color and car.
I think it's not enough coats of blue with clear to really notice
Did the candy sort of kill the pearlesant effect? Did you guys cut and polish the finish ? Maybe it's just me but the flake side sorta looks like pebble dash finish. Of the two l would lean towards the pearl.
For me the flake just POPS while the pearls are far more subtle. I agree with Wally, the FLAKE is da shizat fo sho nuff.
@@kennycosgrove91 Ya don't cut and polish a peelable finish. That's is for harder materials that can take the effects of the process.
The traditional pearl has a smoother look. The other has a texture look to it. I think it’s depends on the car and color. Great video.
It's orange peel it needs cut n buffed ,but I agree
I was thinking that
Your supposed to wet sand the flake down before you candy it. It helps give it a glass look when you build the clear on it. But also probably only put a couple coats of clear down. I recommend at minimum 5 coats of clear for custom paint jobs to have a deep clear. This car was a test example so take it into account.
Thats because it needs at least 5 coats of clear and then the full cut and then buff. LOTS more work But WAY better finish. THIS JOB is only half done NO WAY to compare.. YES i do spray metal flake jobs
@@eddiebrown9590 you can cut and buff plastidip?
Got to say that I like the fact you did the glass beaker for the mixing. Looks so much better than the bucket.
Totally agree, the switch was worth it. Source: 3:09
FLAKES
I love how the glass container has a pour spout and they never use it when pouring into the spray gun hopper.
😂😂
It’s on purpose - pouring out the side flattens the liquid and shows more of the color effect 👍
@@dipyourcar that's what I've thought the first time i noticed this. Thank you for confirming my thoughts :)
@@dipyourcar I've seen several of these vids and always wondered lol
I never use the spout on anything as it usually doesn't work as intended or splatters everywhere, like the age old saying, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it! "
I think they both look great but I am partial to the silver micro flake on the driver's side better it just pops.
Deffo the pearl side for me, it's cleaner.
IMO the pearls give the finished coat a much smoother look and doesn’t look Orange peeled and rough textured. The subtleness of the pearls are a cleaner look for me. But as always, love the vids and content y’all are putting out! Keep em coming, bro!
YA GOT THAT RIGHT !! Its PEARL for the WIN . Any candy color with PEARL is just SO CLASSY and SMOOTH . It reminds me of Cashmere , smooth baby .
I have a couple things to say…
I love the amount of detail you put into prepping a car for what is essentially just an experiment. You really care and love for your work and it shows.
I’ve been watching for years and years but I just now saw the first sign of aging and it made me wonder. How long have you guys been doing this? And how did you start?
I absolutely love the content of this channel, I love that you guys listen and interact with your viewers even after you blew up.
Keep up the great work guys!
At this point its muscle memory
When you do any type of painting/spraying/wrap etc. especially for automotive prepping is one if not the main thing in achieving the best results, yeah it’s just an experiment but in order to prove the point he’s trying to make the prepping has to be top notch. I said the same exact thing regarding the aging idk how or why but it shows in this video more than it ever did before. He just celebrated the decade mark last month. I don’t know how he got started though, if I was to guess it would be that he came across plasti-dip which is a rubberized coating made for tools handle and what not and he probably had an idea to try and use it on vehicles, wheels, emblems, etc. and with trials and tribulations came to master it
Fonzie did a podcast with Totally Tubular about 3 months ago. There he talked about how it started.
I liked how you showed something as simple as a dividing line takes a fair amount of time. I've learned a few things and the painting part of the " paint job " is the easy part. Prep, sanding, repair, more prep, more sanding, more sanding and tape are the hard parts.
As for pear vs flake....I feel you get a better effect on body line changes. The flake is cool but it's like looking at a bass boat. Putting one down then doing a graphic with the other might be cool.
Hard to answer the question , cause it all depends on where you wanna go with your color effect!...i can see people liking the micro-flake more, and see others liking the pearl base more!...i just love these experiments!...keep it up DYC team and thank you for all the work that goes into these vids!
Would love to see a video where both pearls and micro flakes are used together with candy and see how it comes out, maybe flake then pearl or pearl then flake, candy on top of it
U r right it is a tough decision but I think I like the metallic better it just looks a little bit shinier.
The pear side looks smoother and looks more uniform. I agree that it’s just personal preference on if you like flake or not but the flake did nothing to enhance the candy finish. Now I think if you did this same test in Autoflex you’d get a more comparable result and it obviously would look better from further away. But I do think a silver metallic base or any lighter metallic base in general is going to give you a better representation the candy color of choice every time.
Love the smoother look of the pearl.
Definitely depends on the look you're going for, I like the smoother look of pearls, personally, which is why I keep asking and hoping for a matte pluto midnight flip sometime
Fun fact, my Dad is the one that created Candy colors for How Wheels at Mattel in the 1960’s. He went to the hot-roders in Chicago and got their formula of chrome base with colors and a clear top coat and found a way to replicate it for HotWheels.
And My Grandma was the Queen of england
My dad ate the first candy apple and exploded!!..twice!!...And I took his bloody entrails and made it the color dad's bloody entrails!!..Everyone knows this!!
..
Can't say which i'd be happy with either, thank you for the video, jolted some design choices for me.👍
Flake side looks rough, may be we need 2 coats of glossy clear top coat to look smooth like pearl side.
If we can get smooth finish on flake I will go with it.
Thanks for videos, I love your content and efforts you take to make it.
Cheers..
Flakes just make it look like a metal flake paint job. It loses the candy look. I agree that it might help with a clear coat.
This blue should be called ice breaker blue instead of oriental blue!! Looks great👍
Both look amazing!!!! For me I would say Pearl. But would love to see this in person. Thank you for using Blue
In this case the pearl makes me think more of an exotic car and the micro flake makes me think more of a top quality original paint.
I've seen a combination of pearls, micro flakes and bigger flakes that takes it from a nice paintjob to top custom paints for exotics on a showroom quality.
Ofcourse, the application has to be top notch quality
It honestly depends on the look you want. The micro-flake gives that old school Candy Bling color pop. The Pearl base gives a nice subtle metallic effect that accentuates the candy color. Both look great.
This is like the mullet of DYC. Lol Not in a bad way, though! I like both equally. The pearl is more daily driver and the flake is more night on the town. It's totally a personal preference thing but I'd have either based on what I was feeling at the time.
They're both amazing! What would it look like if you mixed the silver metal flake in with the candy color?...and same for the pearl? It's a tough decision - I'm more of a glitter girl, but pearl gives off such a glimmer, too....I can't decide. Fun project though!
As it happens I found out I really don't prefer the standard rough/matte texture the product gives. I understand a clear gloss finish is much more expensive and is not as user friendly but in cases like these, I think it's almost necessary. Clear also gives way more depth to both flakes and pearls anyway. Just look at that surface, it's so rough... Almost looks unfinished or done by someone who has no clue how to paint (no offense meant) just that's the product result, especially with flakes. I would though try flakes and a ton of clear over it then sand and buff the living heck out of it to achieve a smooth final layer.
the flakes look really cool, but the texture scares me away. I'm planning to do HOK red with pearls in the next couple weeks. Do I need a layer of topcoat (without HOK concentrate) on top of the candy layer?
I like the look of a top coat. It’s more glossy and deep. Without is ok too, though.
@@Beth_Amphetamine cool, I'm actually going for matte look. I'll probably add some matte layers on top. Thank you!
@@shin10912 I can picture that! It’s going to be awesome!
@@shin10912 regular Candy paint jobs always needs a glossy topcoat because the topcoat is so freaking important for the candy look. A good candy paint job is when you really can see the depth and gloss in the color, so that's why topcoat is the final stage of a candy paint job. Because this is now done with regular Plasti dip and not in Autoflex with 2k clear coat you are already losing a big deal for the real candy experience. You want a matte look so you will never get the depth what makes a candy look. Believe me when I say don't use HOK Candy Concentrate for your dip job. You will pay a lot of money, HOK KK isn't cheap, for an outcome which you can get with the regular pearls. If you want to create a "custom" color for your matte dip you would be way better of with adding a juice. This will save you a lot of money which you can use for something else.
Candy paint job + glossy clear coat ✅
Candy paint job + matte clear coat ❌
I'm sorry for busting your bubble but I really wish you good luck and fun dipping you car/bike etc.
@shin10912 what are you trying to achieve? You intend on mixing the pearl with the hok? Or lay down the pearl as base and hok on top?
I like the pearl more. It shows off the lines of the car more cleanly and looks smoother and neater. Micro flake has a place somewhere but pearl is more my speed.
The pearls gives a much cleaner/classier/subtle look. The flake paint jobs really only work on a lowrider with Daytons.
Thanks Fonzie, both sides looked great in different ways. I am kind of wanting to see a holographic one now. 😆
The flake looks rough so it’s a no for that I like the smooth glass like pearls
Pearl takes the easy w for me, the flake is just a little too.. sparkly
Wow, both look amazing. I think it comes down to the look you are after. Personally I prefer the Pearl side for that foe color shift effect but if you are after a 'metalic' look I think the flake side would be the way to go. Thanks for the video!
The flake looks like old school TV static when being mixed!!!! 🤣🤣
Like others have said..the flake looks rough, orange peel like. Maybe another coat or two would make it look better. I love them both. That color rocks!! Since doing these House of Kolors, what is the longevity and peeling action of the candies??
Fantastic comparison! they both have a very awesome style to both where i would go with either one. The color might influence me a bit to one or the other but blue is OBVIOUSLY the best color so they look go in micro and pearl forms. Also still waiting for your arm gains routine, looking stacked my guy
I feel like the flakes make it seem more Matt and textured and the pearl gives it a less textured smooth glossy finish. Both are a beautiful in its own right.
Pearls drivers side is my personal favorite
The pearls for the "wet" look is gives the paint. Although the flake is absolutely awesome as well!
I thought the pearl gives a wet look myself. Something like for 99 eclipse or the 2nd gen supra.
@@kid_rajah it isn't a supra, but I have a 2003 gmc sierra thats a super similar glossy blue and it looks dripping wet still! If I could post a pic I would! Youd see why I love it for sure!
Silver micro flake .love that side more.
they both look good, but I'd rather have the flake finish. it's got more sparkle and pop
Pearl in this type of setup but growing up candy painting we used micro flakes
IMO, the Pearl is a "cleaner" finish compared to MicroFlake. Yes, MicroFlake creates a great effect, but Pearl looks smooth as silk.
oh ! great video, solved my curosity
The Pearl Base for me is a better choice, the other side displays more flakes which for kills the candy look.
Personally I think it all depends on the car. The Pearl would suit something like a big Audi or SUV. Where the Flake would suit say Lambos or higher end cars. Yet something like a new Supra or tuner cars would work with both. It's all down to personal preference. Each to their own.
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there
I like the pearl better, much smoother richer finish
Should have done a blue to gray and white fading stripe just to Contour the whole getup. still nice though.
Definitely pearl. Smoother, shinier and altogether lovely.
I prefer the pearl with the blue, I think it's about the color.
Peals definitely. The Flake made the final job look like it had a texture to it. Not orange peal - but something just as undesirable - IMHO........
I like the Pearl best.
I like the pearl so much more.
It's smoother and the candy seems more impressive.
The flake simply looks like a blue flake and nothing special.
I think we're going with a flake or hyper shift for the Honda build we're doing, we'll be sure to mention we're we got it from and leave a link for others to find you .
😊
I like the smooth look of the pearls. The micro flake is a bit much for me, almost too much sparkle.
The flake side looks like it needs a few wet sands and clear.
I'm likin the pearl better.
Pearl for sure.
Would really like to see this with the flake with half the car in gloss and half the car in matte?
Omfg I spit my coffee 😂😂 watching the outtakes. Blue pearl is my favorite of the two. 👍 Great video Fonzie
Pearl, the transfer of color shift looks cleaner. But it depends on the person as always
It's bulking season, hell yeah! You are looking healthy! :)
I think both are great, but personally I would choose the pearl. The flake I think is more lowrider-esque...if that makes sense. Also, now we need a silver holographic 😆
طيب بصير اعملو من قصب التجميل تبع النساء ولا لا ارجو الرد انا عربي من سوريا
I’m definitely a fan of the pearl side. Looks classy where the flake is a little more aggressive looking!
So much combos now I personally think that they both would look good on my personal vehicles now it’s a decision if the flake matches the vehicle. On that car I would go with the Pearl combo. Try an old school low rider or a donk with the flake?? Such an awesome product!! Infinite amount of combos
First of all great video, enjoyed it like so many. I'm going to go with Pearl based. So much cleaner & in my opinion makes the candy colours pop more.
Love the bloopers
I personally prefer the pearl. But I think it’s because I don’t care for flake too much. The color effect is great but it’s too “crunchy” for me. It makes me want to take a sander to it and smooth it.
I like the silver holographic one!!!!!🤪🤪🤪
I feel like the pearl especially on the audi looks best. I also think that the flake needs a heavier/deeper clear coat to really make it shine. Jmo.
Amazing. Loved car's texture variation and bloopers bloopers bloopers wow😀. Imagine a car that uses this combination of texture but in a design form like racing stripes or ivy pattern or some kind of graffitti art.
Is nobody going to mention that the giant beaker has a spout for pouring yet you don’t use it? 😂
Top video as always 🤘🏼🇬🇧
Yaaaasss!!
What about candy iCandy hypershift
Pearl
For us, much better with microflakes, we love the shine of the flakes !! we develope in Spain, a special aluminium in spray can, and particles seems bigger than thos of the microflakes. Aluminium Spark we call it, is amazing as bsae for the candy paints.
You always make very good works !!
I guess it is down to personal preference as you said. A trade off between sparkling and low gloss finish and smooth, flat, high gloss finish. In the end the user decides: get sparkling or show the curves. 😁 But, you can now use that candy tint to change the crazy reflective glass beads into any color you'd want.
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there
Pearl is way cleaner. Flake looks like a bass boat or something you see in Oakland 🤣🤣
Pearl side looks nicer.
can we get both?
I think that's the longest blooper reel since you've started doing them. Lmao 🤣
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there
that is Flake for me i like how it just sparkles.
Pearls with candy is always a sure thing. You know exactly what you’re going to get. I’ve always been a micro flake girl. The flake side is absolutely gorgeous! The pearl is a beautiful silk like finish. The best part of the video? The outtakes…..too funny!!!
Just say NO to the Stripper Glitter ! ( lol ) - Killer Blue
They’re both beautiful in their own way. Personally I like the flake cause I like the textured look. That’s why my jeep is done in bed liner.
Wow! MUCH prefer the Pearls side, it looks "wet" and has much more depth. PLEASE consider making a video on a metallic copper-maroon colour, similar to Chevrolet Aztec Bronze. Would love to see it on the SPLBRG S4 or another Audi as another pearls/candy experiment!
Thank You! You just showed me the paint job I'm gonna have done to my bike this winter. While the flake base is sharp I believe the pearl base will look a helluva lot better on a custom chopper with the chrome and polished aluminum on it. Again, THANKS!
Very nice video. Love both sides but I guess I’m more traditional in the look of the pearl being more elegant at with the straight gloss sheen.
By any chance would love to see this but on a deep rich darker red tone color perhaps almost like the red crystal metallic color Mazda has.
pearls are smooth and soft 👍👍
I never did like flakes in auto paint; never been interested in having a sparkly car. It was big when metallic finishes emerged, but I've always liked pearl better. It's subtle and clean. All of that said... I still prefer the old fashioned, thicc glossy enamel solid look on a car to both pearl and flake!
What about if you try both together?
A project idea. I recently came across your video with the the reflective pigments on the evo.
Mixing that into one of the darker hypershifts (dark green, blue, purple or black) should create a cool stary night look
For that semi-gloss finish the pearls are a better look. For Autoflex the metallic would be my favorite. I've been around heavy metallic silver base with HOK Kandy Apple Red and it's gorgeous! I think for both Autoflex would give that final result that would really pop too.
Just the video I was looking for. Trying to decide what to do with my 67 F100. I definitely want blue candy but after watching this might use the flake on the grill and accents. Then use the pearl on the rest.
Love em' both but I gotta go with the flakes. What an absolutely beautiful blue... wow!
As all candies or flake paint jobs the most impact always relies on the glass finish I believe if you had a highly wet sanded and polished finish the results would have been completely different
I think it all depends on the how dark your color is. I think the pearl looks much more level and smooth, but I like the look of the flake most times. I'd actually prefer the pearl with this color. Thanks for showing the prep also, shows your actually listen to us viewers. Keep up the awesome videos!!
They both have very different effects. I think the pearls would look best on a modern car, but those flakes would look amazing on a vintage car
I'm just curious, do you guys sand or polish after any of the base or metallic coats? I see a lot of debris and surface irregularities, wondering if that's maybe just for these demo videos in the interest of time? Or is it generally not done since the product is more or less short-term
Flakes are for fishing lures and boats. Pearls for cars!
I know right
Hope you are having a blessed day there
