  • June 9th 1985, and Coe is representing his club, Haringey, as they compete in the European Clubs Trophy at Haringey's home track.
The day before he won the 1500m in 3:47.27, beating Jose Abascal, the Olympic bronze medallist from LA the year before, by almost a second.
The following day he won the 800m in 1:48.37, without pushing too hard. He would return an hour or so later to anchor his team with a 47.2 split in the 4 x 400m relay.
He was in good, if not vintage, form early in 1985, but a week after this run he was to get an injury which stopped him training for 5 weeks. This loss of training, together with a back injury that was niggling him throughout the rest of the season, resulted in a somewhat truncated season and an anti climax after the magnificent form showed at the end of the 84 season.

Coe had some bad luck with illness and injury like some other all-time greats. Even so, he had one helluva career to say the least.

Coes positional sense has always left a lot to be desired

I have this on VHS too, Deano....i was working the controls on my first VCR! I think he ran a 400m anchor-leg, second to Amadou Dia-Ba about an hour later. Thanks heaps for this - and Metcalfe - my fave commentator.

Deano! Where on earth did you find this?! I didn't know there were cameras at this event. I'm sure I was at this event - I think I was at the 200m mark. I saw Seb run three times during his career - twice here at the Haringey track - this race, and one in 1984, and once at Crystal Palace in 1982 at the event when Dave Moorcroft ran the 3000m ER. Thanks for posting it. Never thought I'd see this race again.

I'm pretty sure it was broadcast live on ITV at the time. He also ran the 1500 and anchored the 4 x 400 team, but I don't think I have those.
You were lucky to see him run and win. I saw him twice and both times he lost, when he was ill!

You have to think if it wasn't for illness at crucial times in his career he would have gone close to 1min 40 for the 800.

totally agree. He told me a few years ago at a book signing, that if he'd had a few efforts at his own WR in 81, he could have run 1:41.2/1:41.3. When I then added, "What would that be on a new track like the London 2012 one?" He replied, "Oh, a few tenths faster".

@@rogerfederer8117 OMG, you have some issues.
Some athletes get every last bit of performance out of themselves and know they couldn't have run any faster on a given day. Others for whatever reason be it injury, illness or simple bad tactics when they are in their career best shape don't.
Coe fits in the 2nd category.
      It's not rocket science.

He was not even flat out over last 200m either!

    25.1 last 200m, 12.2 last 100m.

@@VictorOctavian yes, I'm sure he could have run sub 11 for 100m from blocks. There was an interview in AW at end of 85 where he said he'd been loosely timed for 100m at end of a 150 in 10.5 or 10.6 (probably the same thing which you are referring to). His ability to inject a short 'burst' of speed was (and never has been) bettered. Look at the turn of speed he displays on the crown of the last bend in the link below.
