Seb Coe 1981 Europa Cup 800m semi, 1:47.57
This race was for GB when running in the old format of the European Cup, which was held every 2 years in those days, and considered one of the highlights of the season. The final was usually held at the end of August, and those nations participating had to first qualify in the semi final meets.
This race occurred during the semi final of 1981 competition, and was Coe's first race since breaking the 800m WR in Firenze on 10.6.81. Immediately after that race he went down with a cold and missed a few planned races. He returned here, in Helsinki on July 5th, just 2 days before his planned attack on the 1500m WR in Stockholm, where he was looking to break 3:30.
In this tactical 800m, we see Co...

London Street Mile 1985 - Steve Ovett v Steve Cram
Просмотров 68 тыс.Год назад
This race took place on the streets of London at the end of the 1985 season. Steve Cram was at the peak of his powers, having broken 3 world records that summer, while Steve Ovett, probably past his peak over that distance, had been having a quiet year, adjusting to the problems he had faced at the LA OLympics of 1984.

In an early season outing for Steve Ovett on 7th July 1982, just 7 months after a near career ending injury, he runs and wins a 2000m in Oslo in 4:57.71. I think it was the UK record at the time, and was about a second faster than Coe's time over the same distance a few weeks earlier in Bordeaux. Strangely enough they both beat Wessinghage in their respective races, and he was to later in the y...

Byers ran in 3:39.01, with Ovett 2nd in 3:39.53. At the time, Ovett and others claimed that the splits of Byers were being shouted out to them instead of t...

    Coe was a smarmy, selfish (man?) who became a bastard tory MP. Coe was and is, a charmless, rude individual. A greedy bastard. I see his face and all I read is his dead eyes and charmless expression. Sincerity isn't a quality he possesses. Not born with it, doesn't recognise it, knows no better. SHAME ON HIM Steve Ovett? A gentleman who has the respect of millions. Loved by the British people. A HERO.

    he was injured for most of the summer of 82, made a return mid August, win 3 800 races in a row, broke the 4x800m WR (was forced to run by BAAB, when he wanted to rest before Europeans) the week before the European Champs, where, he ran a brilliant tactical race but lost to Hans Peter Ferner. He was then diagnosed with glandular fever and scratched from the 1500m. The following year, he had 4 defeats in quick succession and was finally (after undergoing lots of tests in hospital) diagnosed with toxoplasmosis. He stopped running (under doctor’s orders) at beginning of August 83, and not allowed to run until Jan 84. So, he missed 2 or 3 months winter training. The fact he was able to come back and return to his best (well, over 1500m at least) at the LA Olympics in 84, was one of the greatest comebacks in sport.

    That amazing double kick of Coe's forged doing the long miles in the hills of Sheffield. He lost it after getting that virus in 1982. With all the modern techniques I reckon he could knock a couple of seconds off the 800m WR. Just like he did lowering Juantorena's WR.

    • @deano27671
      @deano27671 10 дней назад

      Yes, I agree with you re how amazing his kick was. I don’t think he lost it after 82, it just wasn’t quite so obvious or used to such effect as his zenith in 79-81. He still had it in the LA 1500 in 84 and watch the Zurich race from that year! Also had it in 86 Europeans. He was definitely prone to more viral infections after that illness in 83. With the right pacing and some competition Coe was capable of 1:41.2 and 3:28.0 in 81. If that form were transported to todays’s tracks and in today’s super shoes, then he’d have broken. 1:40 and be running 3:25.
