  • This was Seb Coe competing for the first time internationally in 1979, after finishing his University "Finals" exams. Here he represents Britain to gain selection for the European Cup final competition, which was in Turin in August, and represented the pinnacle of the season for British and European athletes.
His 1:46.63 represented an easy victory, and showed, perhaps for the first time, a vastly improved kick in the last 100m, which was to become his trade mark. He only starts his kick at about 60m from home, yet he still managed to cover the last 100m in 12.2.
It was also his last race before his first world record (also over 800m) in Oslo (1:42.33) just 4 days later. This would be the start of a 41 day record spree ( World Records at 800m, 1 Mile & 1500m) in which Coe's name would become a household one across Europe. He remained undefeated over 800 upwards all season and was voted world athlete of the year.
    He remained undefeated

    Coe's splits here:- 26.3, 54.9 (28.6), 1:21.5 (26.6), 1:46.6 (25.1)
    Last 200m in 25.1, last 100m in 12.2!

Nice one! Haven't seen this since it was broadcast.I remember thinking how much better he looked than the previous season and then,a few days later knocked a second off of the WR....no wonder he was cruising here! Heady days....thanks for the upload.

Impressive how he just pulls away like that at the end. Interesting that when Aman ran 1:42.38 in Brussels for a world lead, Coe's time from 79, running the second lap solo, was still faster. Wonder what people must have thought when he took the record down by over a second to 1:42.3.

Cheers, glad you liked it. I have the race from the same competition (Europa Cup semi) in 1981 also, which is even more impressive. A last 100m in 11.4!
But having problems getting it from my dvd to my mac. This race above is the last one I transfered using software (Aiseesoft) I had on my old hard drive. Since then I have had a new hard drive and purchased what I thought was the same software, but it doesn't seem to be! Very frustrating. Any advice appreciated.

Coe's run in Turin that year was a bit more flashy, but more of the same. He was simply unmatchable over the final straight when he was fit. Rudisha at his best could not do something like this. He's not that kind of runner.

Sorry its taken so long, and I'm not sure it'll be of any use,but my mate sent this : "The apple film editing software I use is called Final Cut Pro. Possibly harder than the usual to rip off and £750 to buy new. iMovie is very good and comes with any new mac." Sorry if it's not much use...all these different formats area pain in the arse and I'm forever having problems with it,but good luck!

Great upload, thanks. Do you know Ovett's 100m splits for the last 200m in both the 1977 World Cup and 1978 European 1500ms?

I have a friend up in Scotland with a very posh mac....won't be for a week or two,but I will ask him what he does...assume it's just a case of someone knowing the process.I had a video program on my laptop for about four years before someone showed me which button to push!

Yes, sure! In the 77 World Cup Ovett ran the last 200m in 25.1, last 100m in 13.1, so his penultimate 100m round the bend was 12.0! At the time his coach hand timed him at 11.9 but closer inspection of the race & markers put it at 12.0. He eased up a bit in the last 50m in that race & if he'd gone all out to the tape then he'd probably have run 24.6/24.7
The European in 78 wasn't quite so impressive - 25.7 for last 200m & 13.4 for last 100m. Again, the damage was done in penultimate 100, 12.3!

Look how Coe seems to deliberately slow so that the others can catch him with 100 to go - he's looking around probably thinks he's racing 15 year olds - then he just takes off. Coleman mentions Coe running for England. surely he means GB.
