Great to see Coe's Oslo 800 win in 83 for the first time since it was run 28 years ago. Thanks! Looking at it now, despite the win, he still doesn't look quite right. His last 200m here was 26.1 and last 100m was 13.1. A vintage Coe would have run the last 100m well under 13.0. A year later at the same meet when only "80% fit" according to himself, he ran almost exactly the same time (1:43.84) in the lead up to LA. In 84 however, his last 200 was 25.3.
People often talk about the Ovett v Coe rivalry and “why didn’t they run against each other more often” for me there are a few credible reasons 1) they tried to build the anticipation for the clash from a box office point of view 2) they set their own schedules in order to peak at the most important time and this includes building confidence as well as fitness so an early season defeat could become a massive setback 3) they put their bodies through so much punishment so that they were always susceptible to injury or illness and this was a big factor post Moscow 81-84. They raced each other seven times and only two of those races were a level playing field where both athletes were at their world class peak at the same time...The Moscow Olympics 800 and 1500 finals....we never did find out for certain.
Yes, lots of reasons but looking back of course they should have raced each other more often...... they both say it themselves....... 1981 was the year where they were both on fire..... that’s when they should have run.... the golden mile would have been good..
Coe and Ovett are genius. ( About the videó: without minutes of jogging this would be even more classic however I liked that too..)

It was a pleasure to be in these races with my friends Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe!
youve got to laugh at the way ovett springs from the pack knocking half of them over.legend

@tommytempo1 Cheers. That would be great if you have either of those. Many thanks.

I will check. I also have an 800m that Coe won at Loughborough in 1:44.99 to upload and LA 800m and 1500m qualifying rounds and Finals.
I don't suppose you've got Coe's 2 indoor world records from earlier in 1983? I haven't got them or seen them since they were run! Cheers. :0)
Of course Ovett was at fault
Just getting his elbows out - Flynn was flagging and getting too close!
