    Coe lived just around the corner from me in Fulham I used to run beside him when I was, around 13 years old when he ran past my house regularly. What an amazing athlete he was.

      He always had that other gear,, that extra kick at high speed, I think only Steve ovett and him had .it was unbelievable that period there both had ,and the excitement and craziness , was fantastic with so many great athlete's I remember watching on BBC the run in Zurich 1979 and the atmosphere was coming through the TV . What an incredible athlete Seb Coe was, and he's a serious contender for the greatest middle-distance runner in history. What Coe achieved on the track, and what he achieved off it by playing such a big part in getting London the 2012 Olympics, he deserves the utmost respect and admiration. How lucky we were in Britain to have both Seb and Steve Ovett as the greatest middle-distance runners of the era, and shortly to be joined by Steve Cram - yet another multiple world record breaker.

    • @david2804me
      @david2804me 9 месяцев назад +1

      Coe's case to be considered as the greatest middle distance runner of all time is very easy to make. Back to back 1500m Olympic golds and back to back 800m Olympic silvers. World records in the 800m, 1500m and the mile. He was the first to break 1:43 in the 800m and also the first to break 1:42. He is still today 3rd on the all-time 800m list with only Kipketer and Rudisha ever having run faster. No one has a better record than that in middle distance running.

      @@david2804me Unfortunately he was severley outkicked in the 800m at the 1980 Olympics by Ovett & by Cruz in the 800m at the 1984 Olympic Games.
      Cruz was unbeatable in the 800m between 1984-1985. He was a very powerful runner who would've beaten Olympic choke artist Kipketer but he would've met his match against Rudisha.

    • @david2804me

      @@richardmilliken8705 Your characterisation of the 1980 800m final is not right. Coe found himself right at the back of the field, 10 metres behind the lead, with only 300m to go...there was a lot of bumping and barging on the first lap and Coe drifted backwards in the field to that point and then spent the rest of the race trying to make up the gap. He did not quite get there because Ovett, who had managed to remain close to the front throughout, was no slouch and sprinted early for the win. With a lot of work to catch up, Coe got to within 3 metres of Ovett by the start of the home straight and that gap remained the same to the line so neither one finished faster than the other. The race is on youtube so remind yourself.
      In 1983, Coe spend prolonged periods ill with toxoplasmosis and this damaged his fitness and Olympic plans for the following year. It was actually touch and go whether he would even make the team in 1984 so his results in those Olympics, one gold and one silver once again, are astounding. Cruz in 1984 was in the form of his life and was, indeed, a great runner and took full advantage of his opportunity.

      @@david2804me I'm talking about the final 100 meters at the end of the curve/bend on the second lap . And Coe & Ovett were roughly 4 yards apart and Steve was able to extend that lead by another 2 yards. The first lap was in 54 seconds and Ovett & Coe were at the back of the pack. I'd say that Ovett ran his last lap in 50 seconds.
      As far as running wide and not running a smart race that's all on Seb. Even Peter Coe was angry with Seb's racing strategy.

    Without super spikes and super nutrition too - that would be at least a 1:42 nowadays. IMO Coe and Wilson Kipketer were the greatest ever.

    I’d argue that Coe and Daley Thompson are the only British athletes who belong not just in the great but in the very rarefied All Time Great category. Broke records and in case of Daley was unbeaten for many years in Decathlon. Ah what times….

    Pretty relaxed officiating as several of those athletes should've been disqualified during the course of that race for unnecessary pushing, running on the inside and running out of their lane on the first lap before the breaking point.
