I use my a7iv strictly for photography. I purchased the fx30 for video.

Yeah I get it, it’s just the video quality of the a7IV is better than the fx30. If it didn’t have the issues I mention, I probably would have not sold it. I thought I was going to do more photography but I have used it only a few times for that

I actually sold my A7iv for the FX30. In September, the FX30 will get shutter angle. Why we have to wait until September is annoying. But, at least it's coming. I don't shoot a lot of slow motion, but having shutter angle makes switching to slo mo a lot easier.

Yup I really wanted to have a full frame Sony camera on deck but too many compromises and I’m happy with my Komodo for high dynamic range stuff

Okay Geoff, always enjoy listening to your thoughts as they get me thinking! You always have good logic which can help me from making a mistake when I work through it. I do this for a hobby, not a pro. I currently own the Sony A74 with Sony 20mm F1.8 G and Sony 50mm F1.4 GM as my main lenses (also have the Sony 200-600 G OSS for some wildlife that I like to do sometimes). I shoot probably 90% photos, and have been doing some video lately, and want to learn more about that and do more of it. I just retired January 31st, so no have the time. I have been wanting to get another camera (lightweight travel, etc.), but at the same time something that could help me improve my video skills. I was considering the Sony A7Cii as it would be very similar with the Sony A74 (missing some things, but gaining some things, but same 33mp sensor, etc.). The other thing I was considering is the Sony FX30, as being a dedicated video camera could help me learn about things more directly. One option gives me two of the same camera, one "full size", one "compact" that both would be hybrids. The other option gives me one full size hybrid and one APS-C video centric camera. Are my thoughts on the right track? Anything I am missing in my analysis? If I do decide to go A7Cii what should my next lens be? If I go FX30 what should my next lens be? Thanks!

Thanks! I would only go for the A7cii if you need a more compact camera. The image quality for video and photos is identical and the view finder is much better quality on the a7iv vs the a7cii. Also video features will be the same on both those cameras so if you are trying to get a camera with better video features definitely go for the fx30 if the a7iv isn’t cutting it for you

Still a great photo camera though...thats what I primarily use it for tbh. Its not the most useful video camera in my opinion. My ZV-E1 stomps on it.
