    After shooting many 22lr matches, pistol and rifle, I found out it is very important to keep your 22lr ammo warm on a cold day. 22lr ammo can be very finicky in cold weather. I always keep my ammo inside my coat. Great videos.

    • @seanoneil277
      @seanoneil277 Год назад +1

      I know folks who wipe the wax/grease off the rounds, get them dry, then lightly oil them when they're going to be shooting below 40deg F or so. Helps with the wax/sludge that slows things up.

    • @nilsforseth404
      @nilsforseth404 Год назад +1

      What I meant by keeping 22lr ammo warm on cold days is due to the fact 22lr ammo can be very finicky. Especially during cold temperatures. Usually caused by the small amount of powder in each bullet and being rimfire. I certainly would not use oil on the bullets. Cold 22lr ammo can cause inconsistent accuracy. Good luck my friend.

    I finally got my order of SK Std Plus from Optics Planet that I ordered in the spring as part of a larger order. I knew I would have to wait this long when I order and most places have been OOS anyway. Two out of 2 groups at 1 yards were 1 inch apart. The SK Semi Auto Rifle was sub-MOA with two groups at 50 yard but went well over at 100 yards with my Tikka. The new SK Std Plus I just received was 1 inch at 100 yards in the two groups I recently shot. I will try more of both. My T1X was well over 1 MOA on Eley Target but was sub-MOA on many Eley Force groups. Some groups with Tac-22 are sub MOA and some are well over so too inconsistent to be good but much better than what you experienced. The best ammo was Federal Champion I bought in Jan 2022 at Walmart when most stores had little ammo. It was 40 grain in 50-round boxes and they only had three. It was a good lot as recent Champion I bought was 1.5 or worse MOA. I think there has been too much variation in lots in the last few years when the ammo has even been available. I'd suggest you get a newer lot of SK Std Plus and retest.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Год назад +1

      I have a case of it now and it shoots good. All this ammo have been inconsistent at best as of late. Makes it hard.

    • @raykettel1837
      @raykettel1837 Год назад +1

      @@RimfireSS I agree about inconsistency. One box of Federal Auto Match was giving me 0.9 MOA to 1.2 MOA group, much better than I expected, and better than Eley Target. The next box was worse as one would expect for bulk Federal. Some Federal Champion in 50-round boxes bought in Jan 2022 gave mostly sub-MOA. All I could find was 3 boxes. Recent Champion ammo I bought is not good. I assumed I got lucky with the 3 boxes. The two boxes of Eley Force that I got are good but probably not as good as the SK Std Plus.

    So I haven't researched it as deeply as I probably should, but what's your opinion on "a bore has to have X number of rounds of the same ammo to season it before you will know how it groups with that ammo" old fudds tale or proven fact or...?

    • @danulman8837
      @danulman8837 Год назад +1

      I have demonstrably proved this to be a fact, many times over. The primary cause of this is due to the different bullet lubes used by the manufacturers.
      When I am verifying lot numbers, I will segregate the ammo by manufacturer so I only have to “season” the bore when I change manufacturer and don’t waste a bunch of expensive ammo. Typically I will see a significant increase in accuracy after ten rounds and the final tightening of the group after the second ten rounds.
      I have won numerous bets at the range over this matter-a lot of folks don’t believe it until they see it themselves. The other thing that has a significant impact on accuracy is temperature, specifically cold temperatures. I make an effort to keep the ammo warmer when the O.A.T. is below 50 degrees. The coldest I’ve shot 22 rf is the low 40’s and the degradation in accuracy was noticeable until the ammunition, which had been sitting on the bench for a good while was warmed up.

      @@danulman8837 so for example, if I have 9 types of 22lr from 3 manufacturers( 3 types from each manufacturer) and I want to see which one does best in my gun, I should 1st segregate by manufacturer, then shoot 5, 5-shot groups of each type, and clean between manufacturers? Or what would be a good "protocol" for testing 22LR such that I'm not wasting a ton of unnecessary shots(I have more than a couple of 22's to test), but still getting an accurate sample of how a specific ammo will likely perform in a specific gun? Bringing up the temperature issue, I'd be very interested to test which 22lr is the most temp stable, that would be fun, I've done a little temp stability testing in hand loads(and a lot of other people have too). I really appreciate your help.

      @@joearledge1 to be clear, I don’t clean the rifle between ammo switches. Also I don’t shoot 25rounds out of each box. Example-I’m going to test three different kinds of SK ammo, Standard Plus, Long Range and Long Range Match. I’ve been shooting Eley Match so I will run twenty rounds of Standard Plus (the cheapest of the three) through the gun to season the bore and then shoot two five shot groups which is enough to tell if the gun likes it. Then I jump right into the next two boxes, shooting two five shot groups each. They all use the same bullet and lube so obviously no seasoning required for the second and third box.

    Great test! But, how do you account for groups within the same ammo going from horrible to the best in 5 strings? Any thoughts as to why? And when you have 2 great groups and 3 horrible groups with the same ammo, are the 3 bad groups the norm, or the 2 good groups? This has always plagued me when testing ammo. Whether I was shooting game or targets, I would hope that the first shot was where I was aiming, not the 20th. From what I see here, your setup doesn't like any of this stuff, because it just cannot be counted upon to put shots where you want them, WHEN you want them there.

      Welcome to rimfire, ammo consistency woes.
      Generally the higher priced line of ammo within a brand is "suppose" to be the best most consistent they make with the tightest qc standards and as the price decreases the inconsistencies or "fliers" generally will be more often or pronounced.
      Also when choosing a hunting ammo in most cases what you need to be testing is the first or cold bore shot accuracy in general as in hunting that initial shot is important.
      As a barrel warms up of course many times its point of aim will change so foe hunting purpose when testing what the 10th or 15th consecutive shot does out of your rifle means little as compared to that first shot.
      With rimfire ammo one production lot number of a certain brand may shoot sub moa and a different lot number produced on a different day on the same machinery may not shoot anywhere near as well as a different lot number did.
      Rimfire shooting the ammo is one of the weak links out of your control to a degree.
      You buy it and hope what you bought shoots well out of your rifle but you do not know until after you start shooting it!

      I know the ammo your talking about and unfortunately we were going from SK to Eley ammo and it took about 15 rounds for the barrel to “season” for that ammunition. So the new ammunition gets rid of the old lubricant and fouls it’s own in its place. When that happens it starts to group. This is why when I finally find a ammunition that shoots well in my rifle I usually stick to that ammunition.

    I see so many of these "ammo tests". What a waste of time. Every rifle is different, even the range model from the same manufacturer. They will all have a particular ammo that it likes. What shots MOA in my rifle, probably won't in another. Even the match ammo. My old Rem 580 loves SK Rifle Match. I can almost squeeze MOA out of it at 100 yrds south that ammo. A friend of mine has a custom Danish Bench rifle that will spray SKRM all over the place.

      You are somewhat right, but there are ammunitions that shoot well in just about everything, and I’ve had some rifles that shot just about everything well. These videos give people a idea on what might shoot decent in there rifle and maybe a idea on some ammunition they never even thought of trying. I’ve had the same lot of ammunition shoot differently box to box. .22 is inconsistent at best and most shooters realize that. Buying any .22 ammunition is like rolling the dice, even the expensive stuff shoots like crap in some rifles. That’s the frustration of shooting this cartridge. But when you do find “the” ammunition that works best it sure is a ton of fun. Half the fun is all the shooting you get to do in the process. But waist of time? Not for me.
