The descriptive words and adjectives we use to describe cymbal sounds is amazing… a buttery warm crash with pingy response and defined bow and rich bell from the vibe of…
Great content, tremendous information for those who aren’t in the know. Many drummers only know what they are playing based on the ink that is stamped on their cymbals, but don’t know why a cymbal sounds as it does…this and several of your other vids share a much needed light to the uneducated, and I certainly don’t mean that to come across as crass. Years ago, pre internet days (yes I’m old 😅) we didn’t have access to the information you are providing. We only knew from what our instructors and contemporaries shared with us, whether factual or not. You are doing a great service to the drumming community….kudos sir !
Thank you for following along! I really love doing this, and a big reason I started doing these videos is that I couldn't ever find this info when I started. I always wished there was info that would've helped me know how to look for "my sound". Would've saved me alot of money! haha
All amazing Tim! Great playing as well! Super melodic!
Thanks Brent!
Love the one closest to the camera! I learned a lot in this, thank you for this video!
You bet! Thanks for watching!
For me, the one on the right would suit me best, clear, bright stick with less wash, still plenty of wash near the edge. All of them sound nice, and thank you so much for talking more about the cymbal profile, it really helps me understand better.
Thanks for watching!
The one furthest to the right would be my choice , to my ears and preference it had the nicest combination of dark and clean, with a full crash.
What a great video - thanks so much!! I know that profile makes a difference, but I never saw it played out so clearly. I liked the one the right for my own tastes, but they were all great. Thanks again!!
Thanks for watching!
The pitch goes clearly up from left to right. The one on the left has a wonderful low pitch, my personal preference for the main ride, but I agree it would be more specialized for jazz context, and not so versatile. Then on the left, I'd put a cymbal with a bit of a higher pitch, but smaller. What does it depend on? The cymbal profile, that is, how flat it is? Why does a ride cymbal of say 22 inches may have a really nice combination of stick definition and wash and pitch. And then the same brand and model but at 20 inches will be too washy, going toward a crash.
Yeah, the profile height plays a huge roll in how a cymbal sounds. Many larger manufacturers crank out hundreds of a particular model and they simply don't have the time to properly tune the instrument so it sounds it's best.
I love the one on your left, could I buy it?
It's already sold, but I can make another that would be similar!
Is the middle one available for sale?
They're all sold, but I can another that would be similar!
It is amazing how much the profile and bell affect the sound of a cymbal. I have a matched pair of Avedis Zildjian (before there was an "A-series) that I bought in 1966. This was before the trend of the bottom being much heavier than the top, as introduced by Louis Bellson when Zildjian started the New Beat series. The weights are almost identical with the top being slightly heavier. The profile of the bow and the bell of the top are more pronounced than the bottom. The lathing of the bottom one is also slightly wider. Amazingly, when you rest the hole on your finger and tap each one, they sound very different. The top one is brighter and louder. If you reverse them with the bottom on top, the pair sound completely different. I still use these on a regular basis in small venues with acoustic instruments.
Great demonstration!
Yeah, isn't that wild!? There's so many invisible things going on in a cymbal that even 2 that have a similar profile and weight will still be very different. It's so fascinating. I bet those hats sound killer!
The left is what I prefer.
The one on the right seems to me the most versatile to my liking, the middle one nicely dry and the left one with the clearest definition of the three. They all crash real nice. The most amazing part is the theory behind all that. You should write a book on that. It’s great you share your knowledge and experience!
It's so fascinating! I'd love to one day write a book.
Great comparison Tim, how does this translate to hi hats? Would you say it’s similar on a smaller scale? I’ve had some vintage HH cymbals that were pretty damn flat and still had a pretty clean chic. Thoughts?
Concept definitely still applies to smaller cymbals. Really flat hats usually don't have a great chick sound, but there are exceptions to that rule!
Funny how the lowest has the highest bell sound pitch and vice-versa. Is this normal ?
Not necessarily. It could be the perceived pitch or a certain overtone that sounds higher than the others.
i would buy the middle one
I can make another that's very similar! This one is sold.
Beautiful sounds are these for sale?
Thanks! These are all sold but I'm making new ones all the time. I also offer commissions if you would be interested.
This is why I have so darn many rides. :-).
Yep! Ditto!
Don't care for the sound of the left one by itself but but the stick sound is everything I want in a ride. My pick.
I like the sound of the one by the hats ❤
Want. All. the.Tim. Cymbals. (lottery? crime? tax return?) - I could use each of them in my different bands...at this point, I have no cymbal smaller than 20" (except hi-hats, Lol). Once again, OUTSTANDING!!!
haha thanks Eric!
Left one suits my ears the best. All are beautiful and have such a rich tone.
Thanks!
There is nothing identical about the three cymbals that are being played. Therefore what is being said by the maker doesn’t make any sense.
You gotta watch the video to understand the title...
