I picked one up used because I needed a versatile zoom lens for occasional wide shots at 24mm and if my 70-200/2.8 isn't quite wide enough. This thing is great. You can get it pretty cheap on the used market and for a "kit lens" the quality is pretty astounding. I've seen other reviews and some even chose to keep the f/4 over the f/2.8 because it gives them pretty much the same image quality while being way smaller and lighter. Many photographers prefer getting f/4 lenses over the f/2.8s specifically because they want to save space and weight. And with the collapsable design they really doubled down on that. To be honest, I'm not a fan of that but I get why they did it. The mechanism doesn't feel cheap either and they didn't make a compromise when it comes to image quality. I paid 350€ for it, for the image quality I get from this lens I'm willing to make some ergonomical sacrifices.
Hi Matt, It is a year plus since you posted this review of the Nikkor 24-70 F4 S lens for the Z mount cameras. I did get 2 of these lenses with both kits, my new Z6II and Z7II. Not sure I will need them both, but I have them now for the time being. Your review was very helpful to me on many levels. I am glad to see how sharp it is in your opinion. I agree with you. The little bit I have shot the lens with both cameras, the results and photos where 1st class, A1 sharp. I didn't use them in a stadium, but rather in close range in my home and in my son's home taking pictures of my baby granddaughter. I do agree with you that the size of the lens is really nice, and light as well. Comparing the lens to my old F mount 24 - 70 F 2.8, and the 24 - 70 F2.8 with the VR, they are night and day. Handling those lenses with the FTZ adapter, is really very awkward, but they do work. I think the F 2.8 with the VR, is heavier than either camera. I cannot see myself carrying either of those large lenses when I want a 2.8, 24 - 70 with me on a shoot or while traveling. So far, I have resisted purchasing that Z mount lens. That "proposed", 24 - 105mm will be very nice, when it is available. I watched your review a few weeks ago of the Z mount 70 - 200, F 2.8 with the 2X extender, which was very, very interesting. It's on my lens list for the Z mount cameras. Thank you again for all you very well done professional reviews. Your information is very much appreciated and respected. Good job! 👍 📸 🗺 🏟 👏
Yes it is the "kit" lens that came with my Z6. It is a heck of a lens. I have other Z lenses including the Z 20mm 1.8 /S, the Z 50mm, Z 85mm and the Z 70-200 2.8, yet this is my every day lens. It is compact, not heavy, it is crisp, very sharp and the price was right. My preferred lens for shooting outdoors in daylight.
Great lens! One of my favourites. With IBIS, f4 is not that limiting. I've collected a lot of glass over the years (F mount Nikkor and Zeiss, M mount Leica) that I can use but this is what is usually on my Z7.
I've had the Z7 and the 24-70 f4 S since March 2019 and truly love this combo. Perfect for travel. I went to Morocco in June and captured some amazing detail in shots of doorways in Chefchouen with this set-up. I'll be in Australia in Feb 2020, starting in Sydney, then the Red Centre, Cairns and Brisbane where I pick up a rental car and finish my trip in Melbourne. Hope the bushfires have died down by then. Cheers Matt.
The Z7 is the best camera i ever owned and i have had a few good ones. I have both 24-70 f4 and 2.8 and both are amazing. Got the 50 1.8 the other day, and it is amazing.
Yes Jan, I totally agree with you it is an outstanding camera. I am using it as most of the time these days. I really I find nothing to complain about. As for the lenses I find them stunning. How are you finding the 24-70 2.8? Is there much difference between the F4?
Matt Irwin Photography I haven`t done any tests to compare the two lenses, i do prefer the 2.8, i guess because it does let in more light and no lock. For low light situations the more the better:-).. regarding sharpness, both deliver.
I too bought both 24-70 s lenses for my Z7 and am thinking of selling one of them. The f/4 is handy when attempting NYC street photography but i have not decided yet. What I have in my mind is the coming 70-200 f/2.8 which will be the last lens I will buy probably.
All I have is S lenses. I used my 28-300 as my go to lens. I need a good travel lens so I was looking at the 24-70mm because it is so compact. Your video really was helping me decide, along with a friend who has the 24-70mm f4 Z lens, until you mentioned the 24-105mm. I can wait a few months. I will be talking with a Nikon Representative this Saturday. I will see what he knows. Nikon has been running sales on lenses but not the one I want.
Thanks Steve, yes go for it, I simply love that lens. So so much. It is amazing value, wait for a sale, and truly a revelation. :) What sort of subject matter do you mostly cover? CHeers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography it seems odd to me that you would walk away from a conversation specially from the host of a channel like this and a question that has been so nicely asked...People can be very strange Matt...but we are not all like that thank Goodness. ..Twice in the last few months I have had people trying to trick me into believing that they are the famous actor who I have commented on (ie Russell Crowe )..Their name is the name of the actor!!?..Its really a weird place sometimes!!...Keep doing what youre doing in the way you are doing it. Its good ...and thanks.
I shot a wedding the other day, I was switching between my D810 and a Tamron 24-70 g2 and a Z6 with the 24-70 f4 and got to say, the Z6 images look better to me. Even when the iso was bumped up on the z6 to make up for only being f4, they still look better than the D810 at 2.8. The Z6 with that lens is such a good combo, I’m beginning to wonder if I need a f2.8. I’ve got 3 of the 1.8s lenses so covered for low light and not sure spending £2k on the f2.8s is worth it!
Yeah Dave, the 24-70 F4 is an amazing little thing, and add in the IBIS as well as the ISO and it can work in low light places. All for a great price, size and weight. What will be your next Z lens, I am waiting on the 20mm 1.8. Cheers Matt
Matt Irwin Photography I’m after the 14-30 next, I’ve got the 35, 50 and 85mm which are all incredible but need something wider. The 70-200s would be great but for the amount I use it, I’ll stick with the Tamron G2 version I’ve got, it’s actually very good on the FTZ anyway. Another reason for liking the f4 is that I only really use 2.8 for ceremony shots in badly lit church’s and to be honest, I’m not a big fan of the way 2.8 looks. At 2.8 shooting 2 people they have to be pretty level to get them both in focus and during the ceremony that rarely happens. You get one in focus and the other is just a bit out, so it looks like a you missed. I’d rather use either f4 and get both in or use one of the 1.8s and get a proper shallow depth of field.
Dave, I wonder, what do you think about the distortion of the 24-70s on both ends compared to the Tamron 24-70 G2? Do you believe that this Nikon Z mount lens has so great distortion and pincushion that it would be better to use the Tammy with the FTZ adapter on the Z6?
I bought the Z6 with the kit 24-70 F4 , and can tell you that its a great little lens . Thanks for the reminder on being able to switch crop modes , I set my video record button to cycle through the different modes .
I am planning on picking up a Z6 soon and will definitely get the 24-70 f4, will also get the 105 2.8 f-mount macro...would love to hear your thoughts on that lens (if you have it!) with the z6/z7. I loved how much you enjoyed the crop mode, it's something I've started to use more since I got a Ricoh GR3, will definitely be making use of it on the Z6!
I'm really interested to get the Z6 next to my D810 to use it with old manual lenses. I think this 24-70 would be a really great option, too. It's so versatile. Great review.
Thanks Geek, great combo, hold onto the D810, I think it is an outstanding camera. Alongside the Z6, you will have the best of both worlds. What F glass do you have for the D810? Cheers Matt
I'm with you on the locking mechanism, my Canon M5 kit lens had same feature and it drove me CRAZY! It's history now as I have reconfigured my outfit around Fuji gear. Gone is all my FX 'L' glass, 5Dii and M5. The weight differential between the two outfits is amazing, and the quality of Fuji lenses is terrific. Apart from that lock, the kit lenses are much maligned and I'm glad you gave the Nikon one some coverage Matt.
I have one and yes it is very usefull, but mostly for landscapes and group shots. it is very ordinary if your shooting portraits, however, the great value 50mm S covers that very affordably. so those two together are a great combo.
Yep the killer combo, and I have been working with the 35mm 1.8 S this week, and I am really enjoying what it has to offer too, I have another vid coming out about that soon :) Cheers Matt
The 24-70 is anything but ordinary in portraits. Sue it does not have buttery out of focus rendering but most portraits in controlled conditions are stopped down also so it is better than the much more expensive 24-70 G or 2.8 in terms of sharpness across the frame, absence of CA/fringing and excellent color. I have the 2.8 S version also, surely the best mid zoom on the planet but it is heavier and larger and only differs when opened up fully. 2,8 is 2.5 stops shallower DOF than the F/4 version but that can be simulated by changing the ratio if camera to subject being closer than subject to background. My everyday walking around sling bag has only two lenses normally, the 24-70 f/4 and 85 1.8 S which IS a stellar portrait lens. My commercial work more and more is done with a very limited kit of 35, 85 and 24-70 f/4 or 2,8. The only thing missing having all the 1.8 prime S lenses, is the newly delayed 70-200 2.8 S but its size and weight seem like a step back with convenience. and here where I live close to $3000. For "only" $5000 more I could get the rendering king 58 0.95. I seldom use my F lenses of D850 or D800 now.
Hi Matt, I see how you have been presenting photos on the wall behind you - but, with such talent, you must have thousands of prints worth printing. I would be interested in a video on how you store the hundreds of other prints that you have and display them. Kind Regards,
I call it a bundled lens, it is nothing like any kit lens before. Corner to corner is it sharper than either my G or E f mount 24-70 2.8 which cost and weigh far more. It is my most used lens, despite having a good collection of F mount and EXCELLENT prime Z-mount. The only lens that is better in that FL is the 24-70 S 2,8. I am sure if there is a flawless zoom this 2.8 is it. But is larger, heavier and a lot more expensive. IF someone really needs a pro-level mid zoom(we all do) the 2.8 needs to be looked at. he small light F/4 version is the perfect travel and walking around the lens and unobtrusive for candid street shooting. Getting the f/4 with the body is a no brainer, even if one has a 2.8 already because the f/4 is better optically and small and light enough just to keep on the camera when out and about. All the Z mount lenses released so far are sharper and have less color fringing than their F mount cousins of the same speed and FL. The weakest one I have is the 35 1.8 S.....and it is still better at 35 than any Nikkor lens before it. The 50 1.8 is the best Norm lens I have ever used and I have 6 lenses in the 50-58 range, from f/1.2 to f/1.8 and that little 50 S lens clearly out resolves them all out of the very center. The Sigma ART is a sharp dead center but nowhere else and has more fringing. When Nikon announced the Z cameras it promoted its mount as being a real advantage but the RUclips gurus panned it badly and said it was just marketing hype. Then we got the cameras and found it was not hype. Almost all the gurus lost more credibility with their rapid dismissal of the system. They are doing the same with the Z50 that is 80% of the feature set of the Z6. Based on the track record of S lenses the much anticipated 70-200 2.8 will be the first lens I ever ordered before release. It should be stellar. Contrary to the YT gurus and their panning of the Z50 will further ruin their credibility. They all panned the 50 f/0.95 also without ever using one.
Ah yes bundled, great turn of phrase. Thanks Stan, for next time. And it is true it is not at all like kit lenses of old, the Z50 kit lenses are more like that. Yet Nikon did make a kit / bundle out of it. :) . Yes I agree Stan, the 50mm 1.8 S is something to behold, yet it is just at a very normal price. Nikon made near on perfection there, and it is time the rest of the world understood their achievement. Yes Stan as for the YT gurus I wonder what has driven the Nikon hate of the Z mount. It feels like it is outperforming optically all around it at a fraction of the price. Yet it is simply not being recognised. If you saw my Z50 video you will know that i completely agree with you about the Z50 and the Noct, and I think the Z50 is a bargain for what you will be able to achieve optically. Z50 vid. ruclips.net/video/oyf3oTgF0Oo/видео.html If I had unlimited budget I would ad the Noct to my kit, I would love to use it for street photography at night. And other places, I suspect it will create some out of this world images. I suppose it is up to people like us to keep telling the world how good the Z mount and the glass is. And the word will get out there one way or another ... I wonder when the 70-200 2.8 S will ship, supposed to be this year. Can't wait to hear what you think of it. For me the 70-200 FL (f Mount) is the best F mount lens I own. Cheers Matt
I really like this lens. I'm using it on my Z6. I got a strange question for you though or the group I like to take night photos and I'm wondering what people set their max ISO for handheld night photography. I've heard most people said it at 6400 but I wanted to find out what you recommend for the Z6. Thank you
Looks like a great lens. I'm looking at one for $600 AUD second hand with minimal use. I didn't get it bundled with my Z6 because already had the 24-70mm 2.8 F-mount lens. Haha, I was at that tennis match too. I remember how amazing the sky was that evening. Doesn't look like the Australian Open will go ahead this year. :-(
Hey Matt, how does the F4 24-70 compare to the 2.8 equivalent on a Z6? F2.8 is around 3x more, but is it 3x better than the F4? 🤔 Most of my shots are in low light on moving targets. Subject rather
Hi Mark, I far prefer the Z. Ergonomics, F glass, viewfinder, XQD, GUI and more, are all better. Yes the Sony has slightly better focus, but for my type of photography it never comes up for me. Perhaps if I photographed sports at night I might notice, but nothing these days focus wise is a problem, and the Z lenses I have to date are all outstanding. Are you thinking about one of them?
@@MattIrwinPhotography yes Matt - I shoot hybrid with 2 D750 at the moment. I'm thinking of the Z6 with the 35 or 24mm S lens to use on a Weebill S. I have a 24mm F1.4 sigma - so might go for the 35S. QUESTION // are there square markers for filming Instagram and square social media content on the Z cameras.
@@markshirley01 Yeah for sure, that camera allows you to shoot square. So you don't have to crop in post, and as you can be sending jpegs to your camera as you shoot it would be ready to post in just a few seconds ... It is not how I shoot, as I prefer to have the full image and crop at a later data, if you shoot square that is the image for good. And of course you can crop to square in the instagram app :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography primarily landscape and some portrait ish photos. Also like to get more reach for wildlife in our area. The latter might be better suited to something dedicated though. In contrast to my question I am thinking perhaps the z 35 mm or z 50 mm would be a better fit for my use. Have you done a 35 vs 50? I’m leaning towards 35
While i still haven't got my Z7 yet, i will be getting the full kit with the 24-70 although i may upgrade to the 24-105 when that arrives. The 24-70 reminds me of the old 18-70 that was classed as a kit lens also, better than the money for it would suggest. :)
It is truly great value to get the Z7 the FTZ and this lens all in one kit. If you have some F lenses. It great value and then you can transition slowly into the future adding Z lenses as you can. That is my plan :) What are you currently capturing with? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Yeah for the price difference between the kit with and without the FTZ adapter it doesn't make sense not to buy it with it. I currently use a D700 with the 28/50/85 f1.8 AFs primes. So not really much to transition from F mount to Z mount. TBH as i only do landscapes the 24-70 f4 along with a 70-200 f4 would sort me out. I just hope at some point Nikon bring out a native 70-200mm f4 lens for the Z system. My back and wallet can't cope with the 70-200mm f28 versions. Carl.
@@ajar1000 - I'm not sure what you mean here... Sony APSC has a Full Frame Mount.. the E mount? It's the same mount for APSC and FF isn't it? So if this is your concern then why are Sony better than Nikon on this point which you raise?? I'm confused?
@@madphotographer762 my bad, I didn't realise they used the same mounts for APS-C and FF. What sony have going for them though is their mount is way smaller than the Z mount, which allows Sony cameras to get much smaller. APS-C with the Z mount is dumb lol
I'm torn between the Z 24-70 f4 vs the 2.8, I like the idea of a lighter weight more compact lens but I'm afraid to lose the availability of f2.8 aperture for low light (indoor not well lit) capabilities. Thoughts?
@@MattIrwinPhotography both, I would like to take advantage of the low light capabilities for indoors but also the shallow depth of field for portraits. There's only a 7oz. weight difference
What does annoy me is that once you have shot in one of the crop modes that you do not get the full sensor read out in post processing. ( Stills) Shoot 16x9 then you are stuck with it.
Hey Lucas, lovely to hear from you. I would suggest get this lens as part of a bundle, and buy the 50mm separately if you can afford it, and you will be very pleased with the combo. What are you currently shooting on? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hello Matt, thank you for reply :) Thank you for a great advice, i currently work on my D800E, im product photographer so my main tool is Tokina 100mm 2.8 D wich is not expensive but i love quality of this lens (still it's hard to compare to my legendary 100m L canon lens) , for events i use combo of Nikkor 70-200mm F4 (i prefer it before 2.8 because of weight) and Tamron 17-35 mm (and i'm surprised by Tamron's qualitative leap since my Canon days). Probably next year i'm going to move to Z system, but i still wait for nikon to confirm that 12 bit raw recording on Atomos external recorder (to be fair it's confirmed, but they said that some changes has to be made in their service centers ruclips.net/video/M3m7AmrcVU8/видео.html) . Hello Matt, i am very much interested in a combo of Nikon Z6 + Nikkor S 24 70 F4. Can you please tell me whether that would be a good combo for photography? NO worries Ray, it is a great camera, the Mark II will be a thing to behold I am sure. The primes are outstanding I still cannot believe the 50mm. It is the cheapest lens yet it is the best. And it is world glass for 50mm. You really cannot go wrong with any of the Z mount cameras at this stage. And of course they will only iterate better from here. What is your favourite lens on your current camera?
These lenses look so tiny compared to their f mount brethren. I'd suggest they are not much larger than my Micro Four Thirds lenses for my Lumix system.
Yeah Monster, there really is a strong argument to remain with full frame, as the Z system and certain lenses are pretty light and small. Interesting and exciting times :)
Yep you sure could, obviously it is cropped so more like a 35 - 105mm, and it is not stabilised. :) Otherwise would work the dream. Do you want to shoot video? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, very much so. It is sharper than Nikon's older F mount lens in the same range. Personally I'm not big into blowing out the background, I used smaller f-stops to begin with for getting more of the subject in focus so 2.8 means very little to me. As a base line, I'm 70 and got into taking 35mm when I was stationed in Thailand for the Vietnam War loading B52s with bombs. I took lots of slides of loading the planes and the Bob Hope Christmas show in 1970. They transferred well to digital. I think the issue with the 24-105mm S will be the price, and it will likely be a constant f4. I wont necessarily have a problem with that, but f4's should be affordable. A 24-105mm f4 S lens wont be. You can expect that lens will be $1200 at the minimum. Wont be worth it for a mediocre aperture and really not a lot of reach. The 24-200mm might be the one to wait for, even if its variable aperture and not an S lens. It will probably be cheaper than the 24-105mm f4 S, and will have considerably more reach. If they can keep that under $1000, I would rather get it than the 24-105mm f4 S.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I currently have the Nikon 24-120mm f4 F-mount, which I use adapted with the FTZ. Got it used for $399 in excellent condition with a 6 months warranty, and have been using it for over a year now with zero issues and great results given its basic premise. However, its difficult to pay $1200+ for something with the same aperture and less reach, even if the IQ is marginally better. If I can get similar IQ to the 24-120 f4 F-mount in a Z-mount 24-200 for $1000 or less, that would be the way to go for me. IQ is not the main concern for a lens like this. Its the lens you bring when you can only bring one and you make the best with what you got. If you want quality zooms, look at 24-70 and 70-200 f4. Go f2.8 if you got the budget and dont mind the much extra weight and size. The Z-mount will not change the status quo in this respect. The 24-105 f4 S lens will not be the silver bullet, unless its somehow an f2.8 constant and priced like an f4. That aint happening.
It is a good kit lens, but affordable it is not. In Europe, even as a kit with a z6/7, you still pay something like 500-600 Euro for it, and alone it costs almost as much as the 24-70/2.8 non-VR f-mount version.
@@MattIrwinPhotography No, not at all, not anymore than the worry with any other lens. The lens I may worry about the most is the Nikon 200-500 5.6 only because of its size and weight when walking any distance, like at the Zoo here in Denver Co.
@@MattIrwinPhotography The 200-500 a LOT. Now I put it at 200 when walking. A great lens for the price, sharp and works great, for me, with the Z7 and D7200.
Excellent video 😮!
I've had a bunch of Nikons over the years, but my Z50 with the 24-70 f4 lens is my favorite travel camera!
It’s a great lens . Glad I bought it together with my Z6 .
Yeah me too. Great way to start with the Z system. Do you have any other lenses at this point J?
Good job! 👍 📸 🗺 🏟 👏
My Z6 Kit just received! This is one SHARP lens! I can't believe the 24-70 F/2.8 is even sharper!
@@janpetterkristiansen5725 Great to hear optically they are much the same. I need to start saving for it :) Cheers Matt
I too bought both 24-70 s lenses for my Z7 and am thinking of selling one of them. The f/4 is handy when attempting NYC street photography but i have not decided yet.
What I have in my mind is the coming 70-200 f/2.8 which will be the last lens I will buy probably.
Kafala sorry, i dont do any kind of testing or comparison, so i have no idea:-)
Bought the lens together with the Z6 and the 35mm/1.8.
I am very happy with the combination :)
Always enjoy your stuff, it’s the only lens I have for Z6 right now. Thinking my next will be 50 1.8s

@@Yosser70 Great points Dave. Cheers Matt

Stock on the z 24-105 f/4 makes it hard to get hold of. You’ve used both lenses Matt. Would you wait for a 24-105 or buy this lens in early 2022?
I am planning on picking up a Z6 soon and will definitely get the 24-70 f4, will also get the 105 2.8 f-mount macro...would love to hear your thoughts on that lens (if you have it!) with the z6/z7. I loved how much you enjoyed the crop mode, it's something I've started to use more since I got a Ricoh GR3, will definitely be making use of it on the Z6!
I'm really interested to get the Z6 next to my D810 to use it with old manual lenses. I think this 24-70 would be a really great option, too. It's so versatile. Great review.

Thanks Alan, yeah I cannot fault it for size, weight and price, it is a highly competent lens. Cheers Matt
This lens is so light and compact. You notice this when you use 24-70 2.8 z lens. Quality is hard to differentiate between the two lenses.
Hey Zaf, I am glad to hear the F4 is that good. Which Body do you have them on?
Matt Irwin Photography its nikon z7. I also have a d850 i like a lot also.
Cheers Matt

I got a strange question for you though or the group I like to take night photos and I'm wondering what people set their max ISO for handheld night photography. Could this thing shoot close up food photography as well? :)
Can the 24-70 f/4 really be compared to Sony G/ Canon L lenses in optics?
Matt I see you have a Sony A7R which do you prefer your Z or your Sony.

@@MattIrwinPhotography Yeah for the price difference between the kit with and without the FTZ adapter it doesn't make sense not to buy it with it. Sorry about that. Still might be a year away. Not clear on the current road map. What other Z glass do you have? Cheers Matt
@@KungPowEnterFist Lets see, I own the Sony 24-105 F4 and it is a good lens and is $1200 too when I got it a year ago ...
Putting the camera in DX mode is not the same as putting on a TC lol

Matt, how exactly would this lens be affected by being on the z50? i know it would make its 36 -105 , is anything else affected?
Not sure regarding ibis. Might not be quite as fantastic. I’ll test it soon for the full review.
@@MattIrwinPhotography , great, thanks. is aperture affected by same factor, ie , does it make it f6? no ibis with z50 so vr in lens might be helpful?
OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally got there Paul, let me know if you think there is anything else I need to talk about?
@@MattIrwinPhotography At the moment, I'm just waiting for you next reviews on Nikon Lenses.
It is a good kit lens, but affordable it is not. In Europe, even as a kit with a z6/7, you still pay something like 500-600 Euro for it, and alone it costs almost as much as the 24-70/2.8 non-VR f-mount version.
I almost never lock it. I see no need to almost all the time.
Yeah when I leave it out I am always worried I am going to impact it, does that bother you? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography No, not at all, not anymore than the worry with any other lens. The lens I may worry about the most is the Nikon 200-500 5.6 only because of its size and weight when walking any distance, like at the Zoo here in Denver Co.
@@Paul-D-Hoff Yeah cool how much does that extend??
@@MattIrwinPhotography The 200-500 a LOT. Now I put it at 200 when walking. A great lens for the price, sharp and works great, for me, with the Z7 and D7200.
i dont know mr bean is a photographer
👍📷
Very affordable? at 1k? With this money i bougth all my primes and zoom lenses.
