Russia’s MiG-31 Foxhounds Proving To Be A Threat To Ukrainian Aircraft

  • The original MiG-31, known to NATO as Foxhound-A, was developed during the Cold War and was intended to protect objects of strategic importance in the Soviet Union against cruise missile attacks launched by bombers and submarines. Since the shortest route from (and to) the probable adversary - the United States - runs through vast expanses in the north of Russia, where the airfield network is very sparse, the MiG-31 needed to have a long range. This, in turn, meant it was a large aircraft - its maximum weight is 46 tons. The need for a quick response to the missile threat resulted in a requirement for a maximum speed of Mach 2.8 (or Mach 2.35 for cruise flight).

China only operates 110 gen 5 planes that aren't really a tenth of the stealth our F-22 are. Their radar section that is. Our F-22 is a golfball
In numeric terms, it corresponds to around 0.0001 m2 of radar cross section (RCS). This is around 100,000 times smaller than the radar cross section of a typical fighter, which results in the F-22 getting detected at 1/17.5 of the detection range of a typical fighter
      the J-Dawgs stealth
Taiwan, measuring the J-20's RCS from the side, concluded it's as big as 20 square meters (even larger than the famously detectable F-15) from that angle.

The MIG - 31 is a unique combat interceptor fighter that has no analogues in the world . The MiG-31 (according to the NATO classification - English Foxhound) is a Soviet two-seat supersonic high-altitude all-weather long-range interceptor fighter. Developed in OKB-155 (now JSC RSC MiG) on the basis of the MiG-25 in the 1970s. The first Soviet combat aircraft of the fourth generation.
The MiG-31 is designed to intercept and destroy air targets at extremely low, medium and high altitudes, day and night, in simple and difficult weather conditions, when the enemy uses active and passive radar interference, as well as false thermal targets. A group of four MiG-31 aircraft is capable of controlling the airspace along the front up to 1100 km.
Initially, the fighter was designed to intercept aircraft cruise missiles.
This aircraft is also used as a reconnaissance and bomber armed with nuclear missiles and bombs, now it is a carrier of hypersonic missiles "Dagger" (Кинжал , Kinzhal) .

  • @kolbola
    @kolbola 3 месяца назад +1

At the armament section we have some inaccuracy. First, the R-60 and R-40T are in past tense, they were removed from the MiG-31 inventory, as the last of them shot by training excersise, plus the BM/BSM conversion/upgrade removed their launcher pylons physically. The GSh-6-23M - as its codename shows - not 30, but 23mm. This cannon has no 800 rounds, the drum magazine has 250 pcs 23x115mm cartridges. The RPM is correct. Nowadays, almost all MiG-31 in active service are a modernized BM or BSM version with R-33, R-37M long range, R-77-1 medium range and R-73 short range missiles. However, a certain amount of airframes were converted to MiG-31K, where the internal cannon was removed, so as the wing pylons and the one and only weapon is the Kinzhal hypersonic ALBM. The anti-radar Kh-31P was the part of the BM upgrade proposal in the early 2000's, so as the KAB-1500 PGM, but from financial standpoint, these capabilities were removed from the project. Now, a new, secondary modification is going on, where the upgraded BM and BSM airframes got some further improvements, such as the long avaited FbW control system from the abandoned, former MiG-31M project, from the late 80's, early 90's. The first modified plane had the test flight in last December.

Supersonic and the possibility of achieving it is a banal measure of the speed capabilities of an aircraft. To solve combat missions, a very important parameter is the time after which the target will be hit. It doesn't matter for what purpose. Sea, land or air.
And, of course, it's very cool when the blow is delivered as quickly as possible.
Reducing the time to strike can be achieved in different ways: for example, either a means of destruction flies very quickly at the target, or a carrier of this means flies there very quickly.
Well, it is clear that it is absolutely fine if both the means of destruction and the carrier have this feature together.
And it's great if the weapon carrier, after striking, dumps into a safe zone - home just as quickly. Better, of course, at supersonic or hypersonic, and even better at superluminal speed.

I like to say the MiG-31 was the gamechanger, the one fighter that created the need for very low observable airfcraft. USA had to develop stealth technology as they couldnt win on speed alone anymore, also the reason why the XB-70 Valkyrie was canceled... .as it made no sense to keep on building supersonic strategic bombers as well... they would be taken down by supersonic interceptors..
Thus the 5th gen was created, only stealth can counter such a menace... unfortunately the ukranians are seeing this first hand as no MiG31 was ever taken down, and yet have scored dozens of kills... that thing plus the R37m is really scary if you're not stealthy.

The advantage of launching Kinzall from the Mig-31 at high altitude is that the kinetic energy it receives allows it to become truly hypersonic at Mach 5 to 8 depending on the altitude it is released from. The F-16s have no chance against this aircraft that with its radar having a range of 200 m can detect them and destroy them without even leaving Russian territory as it has been doing with the Mig-29 and other Ukraine jets. Hopefully, this will deter any NATO military adventure since it can also take out armor and Russia has hundreds of them in service.
