If the Kinzhal is not Hypersonic because it can't maneuver at hypersonic, then the F-35 is not 5th gen because it can't supercruise.
There are over 100 MiG-31in storage, Russia operated 100ish upgraded (BM model) interceptors, the K modification is executed on stored cells, not withdrawn from active duty interceptor fleet.
The Hypersonic speeds achieve 2 goals:
    - Indetectable to current Radar tech.
    - Reduces reaction time: let's say it has a range of 1000km in quasi ballistic trajectory so most of the flight the missile is guided by Inertial guidance (which we know can already be very accurate, for most area targets). in terminal phase (50km) it slows down to high supersonic speeds on a high altitude flight (25-30km) to get optical terrain matching and Sat guidance (at mach 4 that's 20-30 seconds for trajectory correction), and then still dive down on the target at a Mach 5+ speed. it greatly reduces Air Defence reaction time, Radar lock will be lost once again and the maneuvers will be able to avoid any missile launched in the 20-30 seconds "slow" flight phase.

@@JayzsMr a normal ballistic missile does not maneuver. a normal ballistic missile accelerates, goes up. when it's speed reaches 0 (gravity and air resistance) it goes down in a predictable trajectory.
neither Iskander nor Kinzhal are ballistic. he said it clearly, quasi-ballistic. which means it can fly a flatter trajectory with capability of mid course steering.
that's why Russian S-300 been taking down Tochkas but no Ukie S-300 took down an Iskander.

I suspect that these missile attacks will have to be coordinated with other types of missiles and dummy missiles in order to overwhelm an air defense system. Given how high value these AD systems are, the cost of launching 30 missiles to destroy the system is still probably worth it. ( especially if the AD area remains unprotected for several days )

The evidence that it hit and destroyed the patriot system in Kiev suggests that so far there is no defense against it. The Mig31 is the aircraft being used in pairs to destroy Ukraine aircraft without even entering Ukraine airspace with the first firing the missiles from high altitude and the second guiding it to the target since Mig-31s can share targeting data and control of missiles though they can also be controlled by the Dome radar system.

It was fired at a Patriot battery but no Patriot systems were lost and sattellite images show that it simply missed by several hundred meters. Kinzhal simply isn't an effective long range weapon in the Russian arsenal because of the lack of intelligence as well as its poor accuracy and the need to launch it at extreme ranges to preserve the precious few launch platforms Russia has, which negates the advantage of speed by giving an enemy plenty of warning time. The fact that it can only be launched by Mig-31s basically means that whenever a Mig-31 is spotted you can just safely assume it's about to launch one since the plane is essentially obsolete in all other roles. This is why Russia has mainly been relying on Shahed-131 drones in order to try to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses, though the issue of intelligence still persists.

@@hedgehog3180 I got the impression that there is no more point in talking about the Ukrainian air defense system at all. Strikes by Russian long- and short-range drones, cruise and ballistic missiles of the Kinzhal type, MLRS and glide bombs have long become part of the life of Ukrainians from Kharkov to Lvov. Moreover, the citizens of Ukraine themselves are not to blame for this; - Soviet systems were sold out before the war or lost during the last 2 years of open conflict with Russia, and foreign supplies are completely insufficient and do not include truly modern types of weapons. Patriot, by the way, is not one of them. This system discredited itself in 2019 and then in 2022 during missile attacks on Saudi Aramco. Yet, recently it showed himself well when a transport plane carrying Ukrainian soldiers returning from captivity was shot down in the sky over Belgorod. Here, the Patriot worked flawlessly. ((

I feel it a bit biased (in a pejorative way) to consider the kinzal as well as the iskander not hypersonic. There seems no objective reason for it, if "above mach 5" and "maneuverability" are the criteria. Then anything that matches those conditions, should be considered hypersonic. That "it can't maintain it's highest speed for long" has little relevance; nowhere is it' stated that it needs to have mach 5+ the whole way of it's trajectory. In fact, the author himself acknowledges that *every* hypersonic missile - from any country - needs to slow down to zoom in on the target and hit it. So by that standard, when applied consistently, no hypersonic missile exists in the world, and what's more: it *can never* exist, because ALL those hypersonic missiles slow down below mach 5 at some point in their trajectory. I'm only applying logic here. That's the consequence of arguing that a missile that doesn't keep it's mach 5+ speed up shouldn't be considered a hypersonic missile.
It seems to me that the author wants his cake and eat it as well. He acknowledges no missile can maintain 5+ speeds, yet says those that fall below that speed on any given time on any part on it's trajectory, can't be considered hypersonic. Shouldn't that rather be reversed? Isn't it that any maneuverable missile that CAN reach above mach 5+ speeds, shpould be considered hypersonic? Being able to reach that speed is on of the main charateristics of hypersonic flight, after all, not that it needs to be hypersonic from begin to end. Because taken that to an extreme, than no airplane would ever become hypersonic neither, since they would fly a large part of their flightpatch below mach 5+ as well. Thsi makes no sense. IT's the ability to reach that speed that counts, not how long to maintain it.
So... He arbitrarily decides they're not hypersonic because they don't maintain a mach 5+ speed long enough, but fails to give any indication what is "long enough" and what objective criteria he uses to determine a time that is long enough. Let alone he gives any arguments why maintaining that speed should be considered necessary to be considered hypersonic in the first place. Is 30% of its flight-path at mach 5+ "long enough"? 40% ? 51%? 66%? He does not say, nor gives arguments why one given percentage should count as enough, and another not. He doesn't even explicitly say how long of the time it flies does an iskander or kinzal is actually above mach 5+, and how much longer it would need in hios book to be considered hypersonic. Since the start and the end of ANY hypersonic missile won't be hypersonic, using the same train of thought and reasoning as the author, one could, thus, argue no missile can ever be called hypersonic.
Using such convoluted criteria is not only highly arbitrary, but also quite nonsensical.

I don’t know what to think about this rocket, because I don’t know anything about it. I can only judge by the video from Ukraine. The Ukrainians filmed the flight of the Kinzhal. I had a question, how do they know that this missile is a Kinzhal? Watching the video removed all the questions. The rocket flew at a foreseeable height, appeared from behind the right horizon and disappeared behind the left horizon in a matter of seconds. It was impressive speed. The rocket itself looked like an oblong ball of light. It became curious what speed it is, at least approximately. I watched various videos with other Russian missiles flying over Ukraine. The speed of the Kinzhal surpassed dozens of times. After the video of the Kinzhal flying, other missiles seemed to fly at the speed of a moving car.
They also say that the Patriot in Kyiv was destroyed by the Kinzhal. I don’t know if it was Kinzhal, but I think that any other Patriot missile would have been shot down. Here, the Patriot fired 32 missiles towards the Kinzhal flying towards them, and as a result, Kyiv lost one Patriot system. Be that as it may, the Kinzhal is an effective weapon and, as far as I understand, it is very variable.

Sinking a carrier would require first finding it and that is difficult when Russia lacks any real reconnisance and intelligence assets. The most up to date information Russia would have is by spy satellite but they only have enough spy satellites to get images of an area every two days on average and carriers can obviously move very far in two days and are some of the fastest ships out there. This is further complicated by the fact that the US has several options for shooting down LEO satellites, so in all likelyhood in a war scenario the US would just shoot down any satellite before it passed over a carrier group. Then there's also the issue of launching the missile, the downside of it being air launched is that the platform can easily be shot down and these Mig-31s would effectively be blind sitting ducks since they have no radar, of course they'd have escorts but there are no Russian aircraft that stand a chance in an engagement with F-35s.

Such a theory exists. But, I think they would not do such a scheme. It is very difficult to implement and reduces the parameters of the warhead. In addition, there is evidence that the missile falls on the target entirely

The entire world watched the video of the Patriot's destruction near Kiev despite the fact that the Patriot fired no less than 32 of its missiles in vain in less than 3 minutes of video. A few days later, another patriot system protecting an air base in the Ukraine was destroyed. According to Putin, 5 patriot systems were destroyed. So it must be recognized that such hypersonic weapons are extremely fearsome and effective weapons.
I still remember the first use of Khinzale in Ukraine, it was on March 13, 2022 against the Nato base in Yavoriv in Ukraine which is about 30 km from the Polish borders. 8 to 10 missiles had destroyed the base and eliminated about 400 NATO mercenaries. NATO's scare was so enormous that both Biden and Stoltenberg immediately came out to say that NATO does not intend to directly involve itself in the conflict. Those missiles no one saw coming, nothing even though they had traveled a long distance from the black sea.
These hypersonic weapons are terrifying, the fact that the patriot can't do anything is a more than valid reason to fear them. Experts have commented that indeed the patriot is not suitable against hypersonic weapons but is designed against ballistic missiles at most supersonic. No one can defend himself with just a sword against bullets.

ic, skyships took a look at the rocket, recognized the iskanker shape, and lazily concluded it must be same old plus mig31-launching, i.e., an iskanker with correspondingly altered+extended trajectory. Lazy as skyships is, he did not even do the little google research needed to find the published research on how to i/o to the interior of plasma-shrouded hypersonic bodies and arrogantly concluded that such i/o is not possible, missing out on the most likely scenario which sees kinzhal being blind but with trajectory randomly altered and then brought back on target by external guidance that geolocates the rocket in real time based on its radio and IR emissions, a scenario which would allow kinzhal to hit with full 12-mach kinetic energy and only requires a materials-science breakthrough to give it protracted resistance to friction heat.
