The most interesting story that happened to the Su-25 during the Chechen war: one Su-25 flew to the airfield with ... a telegraph pole in one engine! 😮It turned out that this Su-25 was performing a combat mission at an ultra-low altitude and accidentally touched the wires between the poles, one pole was pulled out of the ground and stuck into the engine. The plane still managed to return and land on the airfield ... 😎

he knew what he was doing 🧠
Actually it's just small plate covering right oil tank. Left one simply have no space for armor.
Calling Ilyushin "Ishulin" is the only problem with this video. 😂 Great work!
On a side note Brrrrt fans often criticise the Su-25 for its much less focus on anti-tank warfare. To be fair the Soviets didn't need to deal with overwhelming number of NATO tanks (it was the other way around), so tank hunt was not a priority.
Except Brrrt proved to be borderline useless against tanks and most kills were made with missiles or bombs. It's somewhat useful for repelling enemy infantry in close air support, but mostly due to psychological effect of a dense heavy fire. No one seems to wonder why no other plane today is built around the heavy cannon if it's so good.

No doubt the Soviets were also keeping a close eye on US operations in Vietnam, where we were dealing with the same issues in a shooting war.

The Frogfoot is legendary. Knowing how the Russians stretch their equipment I'd bet it will be in service for another 50 years.
Definitely it’ll just keep getting more and more modern upgrades
It's younger than its american counterpart - A-10 that made first flight in 1972 which is still the only one type of American ground attack planes. Russian plane made first flight in 1975. And americans has more A-10s than Russians Su-25. So, Americans like to stretch their equipment, not Russians. Russians just reponse.
If.....they weren't losing so many.
Well , b52 stratofortress is commissioned since 1955 and us airforce announced an upgrade program till 2035. So and others make the same us Russians
Legendary? Legendary for what? Getting shot down? They have not held up well in the Ukraine. Both sides have used them and lost quite a few.
Here is the same situation as with F-22 and YF-23 where the rejected prototype is much more interesting: there was also rejected prototype IL-102, shortly mentioned in the video and it would be great to see it in one of the next series. It is worth it!

It’s crazy that with all our tech, this war is still being fought mainly with weapon systems that are either 70 plus years old or based on those designs.
It’s even more crazy also when you realize that some of the most expensive and advanced tech is virtually negated by relatively cheap UAVs or Manpads.
expensive versus dirt cheap. That's literally all war in a nutshell. Turn out if one side didnt rush the other in just 10 days, it's about draining eachother's economy. A new paradigm is coming, at least from the USA, when the next gen jets are powered by ... batteries. Or so says the US Defense Department.
The SU 25 has seen a ton of combat, possibly more than any other modern jet aircraft. These things have been able to shrug off AAA and SAM hits many times from Afghanistan right up to the present Ukraine/Russian war.

Amazing content...but that title though, think theres quite some footage of it getting shot down by dudes hiding in bushes these days with a missile like 0.25% the cost of the jet.
The MANPADS are quite effective at getting a hit and causing damage. I'm not sure what the hit rate is for various models of MANPADS nor what the kill ratio is. A hit would certainly be a mission kill. Either way these aircraft are reduced to low flying to avoid SHORAD and SAMS whereby they become vulnerable to MANPADS. Therefore the munitions have to be released at a stand of distance. They seem to be just used as mobile artillery firing at targets from low altitude and at a distance. A modern drone with precision munitions or precision artillery can do a better safer job. The western philosophy was just to go in low and fast and fire something like autonomous homing Brimstone at a stand of distance.
Su-25 are made for CAS, not any other missions that the Soviet-wannabes are having them do right now.
It's no surprise they got shot down. Same as sending only A-10s to a heavy SAM warzone and expect them to clean ground opposition alive. No way either A-10 nor Su-25 can survive that unsupported.

@@JohnMaxGriffin go ahead
@@PyroFTB higher SA in the A-10 due to the better cockpit visibility, vastly better RWR and datalink, TGP that doesn’t require the aircraft to be flying towards the target.
Engine position is better for maintenance, FOD, and obscuration from ground fire.
A-10 is much more maneuverable with the straight wing and lower wing loading, which benefits it more while evading SAMs and AAA than the Su-25’s top speed benefits the Su-25.
And the armor around the cockpit on the A-10 is actually thicker than the Su-25’s at 40mm of titanium rather than 25mm
They are built using quite different concepts: A-10 were expected to evade heavy damage by applying design choices like high-placed hidden behind tail engines with 'colder'(because of high bypass ratio) exhaust so manpads will have hard time to get proper target lock, while SU-25 were built to handle as much damage as possible(in comparison to A-10 it is actually capable to fly with single engine left).
What is so difficult about Ilyushin? It is Il-YU-shin, not Ishelin...I was listening only and wondered "Who is he talking about"?
Ignorance it is. 😓😓😓
Weak with the spelling force is he. Not English does he well.
I love this plane with it's wings full of rocket pods. 😁
The Northrop A-9 is like Su-25 cousin. ^_^ This aircraft have the same disadvantage as the YA-9, the air intake are close to the ground and have high risk of ingesting foreign objects when the aircraft must use normal highway as runway.
30 documented losses of the SU25 over Ukraine. How many more have gone down in Russian occupied territory is anyone's guess.
I love the SU-25... much like I love other Russian planes. They look cool. Its no A-10 not even close.
Russia now has the Su-34 Fullback, supersonic Bomber; which is good at going both fast OR slow with even more advanced weapon systems. While the Froggy may remain an icon, it's time has probably passed. Do you guys have a video on the Su-34 perhaps?
Hmmm.. seen any Fullbacks over the frontline lately? There's a reason, it's called failure.
So, basically, none of your shit can operate in the environment it was designed for. And next time reply in English, Orc.
There are videos of this taking three MANPADS hits and landing safely. Almost invincible.
Very impressive but you have to also realize that most MANPADS have very light warheads. They were designed as light, portable weapons with well understood limitations. Conventional aircraft and helicopters would be more vulnerable. Still a very survivable aircraft…..
Took me some time to figure out what "Ishyulin" was .... 😂
One of the better planes around the world that has entered service.
Easily fits in one of the top 10 military planes.
in addition :
SU-25 price : 11 million USD
A-10 price : 18,8 million USD
Two things: T and TM version were not adopted because it would be necessary to built them as new. What Russia needed was instead an upgrade of already in service (and in reserve) ones hence SM and SM3 (SM1 doesn't just exists in their own nomenclature and SM2 was not adopted).
Second: Soviet and then Russia/Ukraine weapon of choice for it and generally ALL attack aircraft was and are still rockets.
And they are still the most used plane on the frontline thank to that weapons , allowing a degree of both precision (coupled with SVP-24-27 FCS) and stand off distance, although now UMPK kits allowed other planes to made a comeback (but for attacking fixed targets).
Love frogfoot, can't wait.
super cool videos you make.
could it be that you could do one on the Northrop XP-79: The Flying Chainsaw ?
From a fan from Denmark
SU- 25 is undoubtedly the Land Rover of attack aircraft...strong, robust and built like a tank!,
IMHO, the Su-25 was inspired by the Northrop YA-9, the attack aircraft that lost out to the A-10 Warthog.
Could we get a video on the VX-23 testing of the X-35 and the F-35B??
Ummm, let me guess... Sponsored by War Thunder?
Russia's invincible jet: Exists
Meanwhile Piorun MANPADS in Ukraine: WELL HELLO THERE
It is an impressive machine, for sure.
They dropping like flies😂
I read the title and a compilation of all the destroyed Ukrainian and Russian Su-25s played in my head lol
What we have to understand, is that the ground attack aircraft as a concept is done. The strike fighters are doing the same job but with less drawbacks, the F-15E and Su-34 are prime examples.
@ThyPeasantSlayer That's not important though, neither with the A-10, nor with the Su-25.
It's much better to not get hit at all. Higher altitude, higher speed and more sophisticated countermeasures make that easier.
The su 34 is garbage.. all Russian craft are garbage
I agree
The concept of strike aircraft is going to end up being scrapped like the concept of tank destroyers
The concept will not die but rather evolve.
@@perfectcell1157 That means you disagree
great production value.
Loved the video interesting facts about its development and design thinking, love some of their design philosophy it makes some refreshing thinking behind what we see on the ground and in the air,, i would like to hear front line combat sortie encounters from Syria and any other conflict zones where it has in the thick of the action, and comparing its performance and or combat damage outcomes some of which may be real experiences and others theoretical.
Mate, can you discuss the Saab Gripen in one of your future videos? Thanks a lot in advance.
The budget friendliest of the three Eurocanards
I wonder how much influence the YA-9 had on this plane, they look very similar.
It was a massive inspiration to the frogger
9:45 - it's a mistake, missile isn't fire and forget type. It's 9К121 'Vikhr' missile system, the same is used on Ka-52 and Mi-28 helicopters. The missile itself is a beam-rider. It has a sensor on its tail (not the head) which detects a beam projected from the aircraft at the target. It can detect how far from the center of the beam it has deviated and correct itself. The beam has to be projected at the target until impact, making the missile not fire and forget type. The beam is quite narrow, which significantly limits aircraft maneurability. In addition, Su-25 flies much faster than a helicopter, meaning it would be pretty close to the target at the moment of missile impact, making it vulnerable to anti-air missiles. This could be the reason why Su-25T has not been mass-produced.
Su 25 ist by far the best ground attack aircraft!
Probably my second favorite plane after GOAT. Would love to own one as a civ. As always, excellent video.
GOAT?
@@DefinitelyNotEmma GOAT goes BBRRRRRRTTTT
@@aaatechrescue Oh, the friendly fire machine
@@DefinitelyNotEmma yeah lmao
@@aaatechrescue the A-10?
It's hadd to pick between A-10 and Su-25. But if I have a fighter jet chasing me... I probably would prerfer in a Su-25
what a useless scenario. you have to dump all your ordnance to run, making the jet pointless to even be flying.
I was not aware of this impressive little wasp. Thanks ! :)
It's so powerful that it gave us the first POV video of a plane getting shot down
10:42 But this was not as a result of military defeat. It was about a power lines in Russia during a training. And the pilot landed on the field of alfalfa, it is obvious that this is not a place of military operations)

As a French
I salute and respect Soviet and Russian engineering. With far less budget than the US, they always fight their way through and manage to deliver amazing products that can stand up to their rival.
I can’t imagine what they would have build with the US military budget.
Greetings from France
🇫🇷 🇷🇺
hey. it's not "ischulin" but "ilyuschin" . or how to write it to be understood...😢. the first word is so so close to really dirty russian word "schulin"... may be taken bad over there - especially now. airplanes are IL not IS' .
ill you seen
@@royssche isn't it rather "ill you sheen"...?
btw schulin does mean the same in czech - šulin - a dick 😁
Байт на коменты, иначе было достаточно загнать Фамилию в транслейтор что бы услышать хотя бы там оригинал.
Love it. My favourite. I built a model of it, and had the flight sim of it.
According to Oryx SU-25 are 40% of all Aircraft casualties which were caught on camera during Ukraine-Russia war of 2022-2024 years. (Second place - Su-34)
yep, legendary loses for legendary aircraft
I was scratching my head trying to remember what the heck "Ichelin" was, even tried to google it.
Took me until the name was on the screen that I realised you were talking about Ilyushin (il-you-shin, for future reference). I don't brain so good...
He doesn't either, obviously. So, don't worry! 🤷🏼😬🤫
This plane is only viable in fully uncontested airspace (like the A10). If the enemy has air defenses, the slow speed makes it a prime target for any AA installations.
Saw a Video of a SU 25 doing an attack run in Ukraine. The moment it rose above treetop level, its RWR lit up like a christmas tree, the pilot shoutet something and dove down immediatly again...
But overall CAS with any kind of plane is hard in such an enviroment. Even for SU 34s or F15Es. Maybe F35s could have a chance, but with externally mounted bombs, they become easy radar targets as well.
Do u have link to vid?
Ukraine and Russia have bother used them in contested airspace, as the US has used the A-10 in contested airspace (Iraq and Syria).
Of course, but that's why SEAD is important, which requires specialized variants and something the F-15E and Su-34 were partially designed for. The F-35 being the Joint *Strike* Fighter was also designed with that in mind, the F-35 has been designed to conduct SEAD against systems like the S-300 and S-400 so that aircraft like the F-15E and UAVs can conduct effective CAS.
Another way to achieve this is by using EW (we call it EloKa in Germany) variants, like the E/A-18G Growler or the J-16D to suppress enemy air defense systems. Such aircraft can also conduct both SEAD and CAS, as they can carry external loads without compromising their effectiveness. Another example for such a dual-role aircraft would actually be our Tornado. The IDS variant is a traditional strike fighter, while the EDS variant is designed for electronic warfare, reconnaissance and SEAD.
@@SoloRenegade a10 weren't used in syria
Does that make them "unviable" however? They are of course vulnerable in contested airspace, but no weapon can be dismissed purely on the chance of failure. You would have to account for the repair and write-off costs + pilot casualty figures per sortie versus the damage inflicted on the enemy. It seems the trade-off is worth it, as both sides continue to use the plane. You also have to consider whether its role is replaceable. On the one hand we've seen cruise missiles gradually replaced by glide bombs, because the fulfill a similar role with better economics, but on the other hand you have tanks. This time last year, you'd have people calling this era the end of tanks, but now they're seen as more indispensable than ever. Despite hundreds of lost chasses on both sides, it turns out there is nothing else on the battlefield that can deliver that much firepower right up to entrenched positions while providing relative safety for the crews.
There is also a great song about these planes in Chechen Wars called "The rooks have arrived" ("Грачи Прилетели")
Wow, I find this military airplane to be very cool!
Great video as always
But its is pronounced IL- LYOO- SHIN not Ishulyin
Also SU- KHOI not Sahoy
Keep up the great work!
