The Russian missiles might have been tracking properly, since they don't have to actually hit you to make a kill. But when you put the ground inside their kill radius they just might hit that first. A workable defense, but clearly something better is needed.
Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 is not something better for you with the Meteor missile? It can easily kill that MiG31 even before the MiG31 can pick up the Typhoon with the radar. How I know? Well, there is an other RUclipsr who put the 2 planes vs each other in a BVR fight. Multiple times the Eurofighter won that, even with an AWACS.
@@DIREWOLFx75 Iam speaking about the upgraded model of the Eurofighter which is the FGR4. Upgraded radar, sensors and the pilot computer etc etc etc. Maybe not that easily thats true but Iam pretty sure still, that it can handle the MiG31 even the newer version one. Not just because of these upgrades but the Pilots experience also matters a lot. UK Fighter pilots got 2 times more flight hours than the Russians got.

The Royal New Zealand airforce (when we used to have Skyhawks) were excellent at doing exercises at 50 feet off the deck. They would surprise and enfuriate both the US and Australian airforce as they could not see them.
This is how the Swedes trained. The standard procedure was 4 meters above sea level over open waters, and 10 meters above forests. The Viggen and Draken didn't have the radars to beat MiG-25's, MiG-29's or Su-27's, but with the help of flying so damn low with GCI, they could get close enough without getting shot down, to launch on the enemy (especially the Viggen with it's Skyflash RB. 71). Hundreds of pilots died in the Swedish air force from 1950 to this day due to this method of flying, however we know it would've been effective, because peacetime they flew just like they would in wartime.
How does this tactic work do they go in an approx direction and hope to see an enemy or do they use their radars and fly low ? I think Russians would switch to irst n radar which might spot them
@@hemendraravi4787 he mentions the GCI that stands for Ground Controlled Interceptor. Basically it's an AWACs that works from a ground based radar to point the aircraft in the direction of the enemy.
These Mig-31 videos have me wondering how differently these BVR engagements might play out with significant ECM assets in play. How much difference would having Growlers, Prowlers, Ravens, etc make? Would they increase the likelihood of a merge? Does it become of contest to see who loses their ECM and EW first? Idle curiosity.
Problem is that the EWAR and ECM stuff is probably very classified, so no way to accurately model it in DCS. I mean, they can guess, but how accurate it would be is anyone's guess.
@@Raptor747 some ECM stuff isn’t classified anymore but it’s all old stuff. Like on the CH-46 their ECM could take our heat seekers by shooting a laser beam into the optic of the missile and frying the sensor so it was blind
That was incredible, well done! Sometimes DCS has this uncanny-valley kind of realism effect, which I don't even completely realize in the moment, but man you really have an amazing talent for creating, capturing and presenting the best DCS has to offer. The scene with the missile seemingly leading you perfectly, not even making large corrections near the end, then suddenly hitting the ground... It looks exactly like failure simulations of rocket guidance control systems, where the system (for whatever reason) couldn't get reliable sensor data of its altitude AGL or simply wasn't designed to even consider avoiding the ground in the first place! (e.g. a rocket that is designed to only go up in altitude, has an error which would only show up in an upset attitude. Say, someone took the unsigned value of the vehicle's altitude and mistakenly returned it as the signed value, somewhere in the altitude control law of the guidance control computer.)
I mean, that was a decent drift to park job on the ground. Reminded me of one of those "big wheel" videos where people put coffee cans on the rear wheels and drift around on the asphalt. Only with an F-15.

Growling Sidewinder, this is one of the best and most Satisfying Videos you have made! Laughed so hard on the lead-up to the downing of that Mig-31. (Mark you, the Mig-31 is my favorite Russian Fighter Jet). Make more videos with it please.
Thank you for the best laugh I have had all morning, GS! Anyone who has spent any time flying an aircraft at very low altitude, knows very well the extreme pucker factor you can have about the hazards of terrain. The joys of granite clouds, of trees trying to swat you, and how the wind moving around hills and mountains can either push you up, push you down, or throw your plane around like a leaf. Adding speed to which only serves to magnify the danger, by reducing your reaction time!
I doubt it would help, euro fighter works best high up but the Russian missile has a longer range and the mig-31 has a better radar, so unless you do this start (which every fighter can do more or less) your just going to be pasted like every other plane.
Dude. When I saw that Foxhound bearing down on your clearly out-of-the-fight bird with guns, I did that thing where you cover your mouth with both hands in shock, awe, and disbelief. "MY GOD... THE DISRESPECT"
Excellent tactics with flying F-15 at low tree top against the Mig-31. See if you can do same tactics flying F-14 in your next video. Also be interesting to see if F-22 can kill mig-31 flying high or low altitude and avoiding R33 missiles. Nice job 👍
I was rooting for the Foxhound at first (obviously!), but with your sexy flying, positive attitude and underdog credentials you had me rooting for you and that yankee bird by the end of the video xD Well done, dude! :P
Given this, I reckon the Tornado ADV would be very strong against the MiG-31 given that it has a powerful radar and more importantly s terrain following radar.
Ok, that was one of your most interesting and entertaining videos. I can’t believe that you flew so low that you actually skidded to a stop in the grass. And then, so much disrespect from the MIG by shooting you when you were not a threat and out of the fight. In the real world, it would have radioed your position back to command, which would have sent out a recovery team to grab your plane and take it back to study it. I mean the engines were still running! So it certainly would have had value to the enemy. I know, I know. This is just a game. Anyway, thanks again, this was such a fun one to enjoy. The only one that I like more was when you were searching for the F22 and discovered that it had been flying in formation with you, slightly to your port side and behind. The sound that your voice made was classic surprise / panic, which lasted about a quarter of a second before the F22 sent a missile up your stern! LOL. There's a problem with that tactics though. If bandit had R-77-1 then being mach 2 and high he still would've had a noticeable range advantage over you being subsonic and low.

3:19 I was so excited when that worked and then I immediately saw you hit a tree and die and I started laughing hysterically that was awesome bro!!!!!!!
@@DIREWOLFx75 Yes and the F-35 absolutely outperforms in that metric. If the F-35 was modeled correctly in any capacity in DCS along with it's missiles it would be the most powerful BVR platform in the sim, almost nothing would stand up to it, not even the venerable F-22.
That was REALLY fun! The belly "landing" and the shot on the ground scene. I almost pissed my pants laughing. Your videos are so entertaining. Thank you GS!
Im curious what generation they are using in DCS, yes our radars are the best in the AF, they pick up f22s and F35s really easily and have a large stand off distance. DCS is using C models and they have had 2 different generations of radars installed. The newest AESA radar is insane, cant talk much about it though
@@AngryStaffSgt that's what I'm thinking too. Particularly cause they're using the gray radome color. Which is kinda a bummer because I know some c-models got the current emodel generation radars which are damn good. It's hard for me to believe on modern standards a foxhound would be out targeting modern F15s. Hell at red flag this year my squadron wrecked house on basically everything but F22s and 35s. Even the F15QA and SA models came back beat down.
@@verdebusterAP MIG-31 Zaslon was such achievement for URSS but was no "better" than F-14A AWG-9 (MSA) with a even better fire solution (AIM-54). If a early AESA could hold his own against that I see no motive why a third generation AESA wouldn't jam a PESA radar.
This is one of the very few channels where I watch it from start to finish. Amazing work, so f**king entertaining! The skills you have are also mind-blowing. Keep up the good work!!
Trees...still undefeated by August 2022. Like the ground. Until now, no fighter pilot ever succeeded against these two. Yeah GS, I know that feeling flying on your Caucasus Server. Nice job, dude! ;-D
From a long time Falcon 4 driver, hats off, yes sir. I did watched your previous fails, against the MIG-31, and am impressed you did not give up, and that DCS is modeled so well that I'm going to see if I can build a Thrustmaster HOTAS keyfile, and try out DCS especially with the F15 and F16 planes. NICE!
I grew up reading GI Joe comics (Marvel) in the 80's and one of the editors who created the series was an Army veteran, so he infused a lot of accurate military detail into the series, it was actually a really well made comic book! There was one issue where the GI Joe "Skystriker" (F-14) faced off against the Cobra Rattler (A-10, okay well he didn't get to choose what vehicles Hasbro released! haha) and I think it was the Rattler pilot who employed "nap of the earth" flying, which is one of the military terms for this radar avoidance tactic. Seeing it played out in a good sim like DCS with the missiles hitting nearby is something I never imagined! Very cool to see it played out!
3:19 Top gun 2 director's cut - the missile misses, but rooster gets taken out by trees and maverick turns around and covers him as rooster goes for a new plane on the ground.
I laughed so loud at ~ 3:25 If GS ever includes this clip in a death montage, I hope he includes the preceding 10 seconds, so that we understand why he's flying so low...
I think the way to optimise this this is to fly a tad higher and do a short, sharp dive when the missile gets close so it will overcompensate into the dirt at a safe distance
@Mike Kabakov if I had even a slight notion that I was the first to think about it, I would be sitting at an R&D military unit right about now. I was of course speaking purely in terms of DCS and it's missile programming.
All I can picture watching this is GS spending the past week constantly staring off into space thinking about how to kill a Foxhound during meals, while taking a bath, while waiting for the bus, before falling asleep, etc.
_"That's a large warhead it kicks up alot of dirt"_ *_gets killed by the large warhead splash_* _"Back into low altitude"_ *_rapid unschedueled landing commences_* You're your own commentators curse

Phew. The world feels right again. Thank you.
(That guns kill after you crash landed was dirty!)
you should try it in the tomcat too, see if the phoenixes with their extra high speed and jester's missile spotting can help you out, plus you'd get that extra top gun vibe
It would probably be spoiled by Jester ejecting
@@Ankhobo lol guess he'll need r2d2 to take jesters place again then
GS' content keeps getting better and better. Hands down one of the most watchable content creator here.
GS came and saved the day faster than a Foxhound.
hmm....
3:19
I was so excited when that worked and then I immediately saw you hit a tree and die and I started laughing hysterically that was awesome bro!!!!!!!
Well done! Would the F=35 survive long enough to get into AMRAAM range before detection and hypersonic launch from the MiG 31?
One on one, probably.
With it's interconnected warfare and ECW, capabilities being properly modeled?
Absolutely.
Probably just walk around mig31's detection edge, find an angle outside it's search cone and shot. Job done.
yes
@@DIREWOLFx75 Yes and the F-35 absolutely outperforms in that metric.
If the F-35 was modeled correctly in any capacity in DCS along with it's missiles it would be the most powerful BVR platform in the sim, almost nothing would stand up to it, not even the venerable F-22.
That was REALLY fun! The belly "landing" and the shot on the ground scene. I almost pissed my pants laughing. Your videos are so entertaining. Thank you GS!
Doesn't the F-15 have a rather excellent radar? Why is it so difficult to obtain lock an aircraft the size of a MiG-31?
Because it's an FC3 module. A real F-15C radar from that era might have a radar with a peak power comparable to the F-14s radar.
Im curious what generation they are using in DCS, yes our radars are the best in the AF, they pick up f22s and F35s really easily and have a large stand off distance. DCS is using C models and they have had 2 different generations of radars installed. The newest AESA radar is insane, cant talk much about it though
@@philparnell757 Might be a late 90s to early 2000s version. But I'm not sure.
Oh so that's why the Russians added a cannon to the MiG-31...
I was dying when he gunned you on the ground.
you need to try this with the F22
The f22 wouldn't be much of a battle tho, it'd be like every thing else, the 31 won't see it until the F22 is in kill range
Just the complete disrespect of the Mig-31 when you beach yourself and he just comes up and smokes you with the gun...That had me in tears XD
It’s kind of crazy just how dominant the foxhound is in bvr
Hypersonic missile truck with a huge radar and huge engines lol 😂
“In a moment of brilliance in the shower”
Ah yes, where all great ideas come about
Oh, the old Viggen tactics of flying below the treetops 💪🏻
Heck ya!!! Finally got that mig 31! Great series man. I would continue with this theme in the future at points. Yet another masterpiece from GS.
I can't be the only one wondering how the F-22 does in this scenario.
The raptors stealth is too good. It would see (and thus kill) the MiG 31 before the MiG 31 saw it
@@cockatoo010 Would be my guess as well.
Trees...still undefeated by August 2022. Like the ground. Until now, no fighter pilot ever succeeded against these two. Yeah GS, I know that feeling flying on your Caucasus Server. Nice job, dude! ;-D
0:46 the post nut clarity, gave him ideas.
GS: Finaly i survive a supersonic misille! 3:30
Tree: Not in my watch!
Larry Hama. He really made those books into something special.
3:19 Top gun 2 director's cut - the missile misses, but rooster gets taken out by trees and maverick turns around and covers him as rooster goes for a new plane on the ground.
I laughed so loud at ~ 3:25
If GS ever includes this clip in a death montage, I hope he includes the preceding 10 seconds, so that we understand why he's flying so low...
I was so happy for you on the first dodge, then I spit my coffee out when you hit the trees.
Man that was epic. Those missiles smacking the ground all around you was such a ride. Glad you have a tactic now :)
Lol at the monster truck coming in with the cannon to finish you off when you beached it!
This is EXACTLY the 1v1 I was looking for, good shit!!!
31BM carries R-77-1 also, so he'd have other options besides AWACS murder machine too.
"OH, TREES!"
The best laugh I've had in a long, long time. Thank you.
Dude you have skills with this game.
But man, you have a sense of Humor that makes me watch every single video of yours
Oh man this Mig-31 vs series are for a show on its own HAHAHA always cracking my ars off with these.. Keep it coming GS! take care
Love watching your videos Man! I work the Ramp full time and on my weekends, I like to get home, open a beer, sit back relax and enjoy!
Phahahahhaah. He was so happy dodging the missle, he forgot to dodge the trees 🤣🤣🤣
The will Farrell looking to the left made me bust a gut. Thanks
All I can picture watching this is GS spending the past week constantly staring off into space thinking about how to kill a Foxhound during meals, while taking a bath, while waiting for the bus, before falling asleep, etc.
_"That's a large warhead it kicks up alot of dirt"_ *_gets killed by the large warhead splash_*
_"Back into low altitude"_ *_rapid unschedueled landing commences_*
You're your own commentators curse
I had no idea fox 3s could mov like that!!! those turns, to stay on target, were insane
Thick air helps those little control surfaces, I'd imagine
"That actually worked. OH TREES!"
I think you woke my neighbor up via my laughter xD
3:22 "That actually worked... Oh! Trees!" 🤣
"That actually worked! Oh trees!!!....." LOL. Great vid! ty GS.
That guns kill was soooo disrespectful, DCS teabag. and lol, i could hear the Tokyo drift music when you hit the ground and started sliding ahaha
@ 7:06 complete stop and was waiting for the ejection... shredded
Now is the Turn of F22 Vs Mig31.
F22 heads on fight like a LION....roar....
oh no...cringe
....that low flying....I am IMPRESSED!!
@Growling Sidewinder
This is a Basic Greek Airforce Pilot Training with F-16 Viper and Rafale F3.
"That actually worked. Oh - trees!" Definitely laughed out loud on that one.
