I sort of laughed when the screen said the bear was getting too close to the carrier. In 1980, when Iran had the American hostages, my Marine amphibious unit
was on the USS New Orleans, a helicopter carrier, floating in the Persian Gulf. The Soviet Bear aircraft flew so close to the carrier that you could see facial details on the Soviet airmen.
We would wave at those guys and they waved back. They would circle around the ship several times, disappear, and then return again and again. We were floating around out there for about 60 days.

This video reminds me of the decades I spent living in Alaska where fighters scrambling from Elmendorf AFB to intercept incoming Bear bombers testing our response time is a regular occurrence. Instead of doing a doc on a particular aircraft, that ten hundred other guys have already done, how about doing some research and educating us on the history of Bear intercepts over the bearing sea?
Is could easily be a series of episodes showcasing the various aircraft that have served in this capacity over the last 70ish years, F86, F4, F15, F22, maybe more.

Would be cool to get a more in depth analysis of the content here over on mini-docs (for example elaborating on what the Iraq-Iran war was...Why Iran was sold F-14's at the time, clearly we are not so friendly now...etc). Sort of like using this as a trailer for mini-docs sometimes, while giving the BVR and dogfight crowd on this channel what they want at the end of the explanation...every now and then. It also doesn’t seem to loft when it feels like maybe it should. I know heatblur claims it’s based on data they have so I don’t want to dispute that without having anything to really put up as evidence, all I can say tho is the aim54 currently feels weak.

@@GrowlingSidewinder "It also doesn’t seem to loft when it feels like maybe it should."
That's already interesting! Because the people I follow do complain about the exact opposite! Apparently, the AIM-54 goes up as if it's trying to target something in low earth orbit...!
In some instances, the pilot was joking he would overtake the missile if he just keep flying in a straight line and get shot down himself!
And after finishing it's trip up to the moon, the missile is left with little to no energy and struggles to hit and can easily be avoided with minimal maneuvering... óÒ

Great Video @GrowlingSidewinder! So this scenario exemplifies the purpose of the fleet interceptor and what the F14 Tomcat was built for, but it would be interesting to put one F18E/F in this same scenario to see if it can fill the shoes the Tomcat left behind. Moving the US and Russian (since the USSR has fallen) technological clock forward 10 to 20 years in technology just to be fair. Obviously carrier fleet defense is still a valid scenario, or has this threat diminished?

"Jalil Zandi " was a fighter pilot in the Iran Air Force who served during all of the Iran-Iraq War. His combat record qualifies him as one of the most successful pilots of that conflict in air-to-air combat as well as one of the best Iranian aces ever. It also made him the highest-scoring pilot in the history of the F-14 Tomcat.
He earned his fame as an F-14 Tomcat pilot during the Iran-Iraq War. He has been reliably credited with shooting down 11 Iraqi aircraft (eight confirmed victories through examination with US intelligence documents released according to FOIA inquiry and three probable victories). The victories include four MiG-23s, two Su-22s, two MiG-21s, and three Mirage F1s.This makes him one of the most successful Iranian fighter aces and the most successful F-14 Tomcat pilot worldwide.
