    When your sons says "I'm an idiot" and your immediate response is "You're not an idiot" and then go on to explain how to proceed properly was a wonderful part of the video.

    Whilst the wrecking ball use as a sledge hammer was more than impressive I am stunned by the power of the electric grease gun to compress that whopping big coil spring and tighten the track! I cannot begin to think about just how much stored energy is in one of those track units - no wonder it shot the idler wheel assembly at least half way across the workshop floor.

    • @manuelve1998
      @manuelve1998 Год назад +2

      I think that gun can pump up to 12000 psi. Multiply that by the area of the cylinder ram that loads the spring; your somewhere in the vicinity of 150000 pounds applied force. Correct if I’m wrong!

    • @silvergreylion
      @silvergreylion 8 месяцев назад +1

      That made me recall an old story from a factory which made buffers for railcars (in Europe):
      One of the cylinders cracked and shot the buffer about 200 m across an empty field. From where it ended, it was about 50 m to the nearest freeway.
      As I recall, those springs were compressed with about 150 tons of force.

    I'm so glad that when Mike(Dirt Perfect) got that first 850, that he unfortunately had some issues with it. Had those issue never surfaced, he would of probably never had the video with you explaining the issues and you striving to resolve them. Had that not happened, I would of not known about your channel. So glad I did find your channel through Mike and have really been enjoying your content. Keep up the good work.

    I had an emergency bay door repair to attend to a few years back. It was the middle of winter so the door was closed, they were doing the same undercarriage replacement as you guys and the idler went through the bottom of the door and 20 feet out into the yard ! It bounced off the bumper of a service truck and scared the hell out of the the guy in the cab. Caused about 15 grand in damage. SO much energy in those systems !! Stay safe guys.

    This is one of the most interesting video series...and a major testament to the kinds of not-so-obvious hazards you can run into in a heavy equipment shop. Kevin getting worried when unbolting the track...the idler shooting half way across the shop once the rust yielded...and then there's the grease fitting not holding. I know fluids under extremely high pressure can be injected through skin, the idea of it happening in that situation is very cringe-worthy. I hope that bruise heals well. Using the wrecking ball like that is pure Camarata...brilliant!

    For years we used the exothermic rods to cut 6" diameter pinion gear shafts off locked up Locomotive Traction motors. We lit them off with an Acetylene Torch as the battery method is a PITA. Can whack thru a shaft in about 20 minutes, compared to an hour or more with a cutting torch. Can fab up a catch pan for your molten metal out of stainless steel to save your concrete. Love the Wrecking Ball knock her loose method!

    Great video story.
    In a branch office of the Company I worked for back in the 1970's one of our Mechanics lost his life when a track idler tensioner let go. It was 'sprung' with nitrogen behind the grease.
    Apparently it went off like a rocket and our man was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so I was told. So, when you folks were swinging that ball at the idler, I was sucking air through
    clenched teeth. I was wondering if in that other 'dozer's short life, did somebody run that in salt water? That's about what we could expect too, considering
    the rust that held the idlers in place. Regardless though, you got the jobs done and done well.

    Fantastic job, loved the old wreckin' ball action. Sometimes the old ways are the best.
