  • Day 2 of planting with the new John Deere 1775NT Exact Emerge planter with the Exact Shot fertilizer system on it. Dad ran into something with the tractor steps and bent the living heck out of them. No big deal, but hey, it made a fun video title!? Anyone else agree?! Is anybody listening to me in the description?! Anyway, the fields were still a bit damp, so we went with a slow start. Did some tillage, some rock picking, etc. All in good fun! So far, the planter has been working GREAT!

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

What struck me was the conversation you and your dad were having as you were working on the planter adjustments. He mentioned that he hoped Onyx was doing okay with tillage and you commented that if anything happened he would handle it better than most adults to which your dad immediately agreed. Seems like Onyx has really earned the respect of you and your dad when it comes to taking responsibility for the operation of some very expensive equipment.

When you talked about fuel coming i had a wry smile, i recall the time when our farm ran out of diesel. Four tractors were waiting to fill up before we could go muck spreading miles away. The fuel came, we filled up and went. We got to the field and shortly after every tractor came to a stop with fuel issues, one after another over about twenty minutes.yes you are right, all the muck and sediment in the tank on the farm went into suspension and then went into the tractor fuel tank. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. This was about thirty years ago, we had steel holding tanks on the farm then.

Contrast that approach with using a two row planter with only a drop feature common in the 1950s. I watch your farming practices to learn the new tools and processes. Farming today is intriguing to me. Thanks for the video and the narrative.

50 acres an hour planting. Our great grandfather's would have loved that. 50 acres would be a couple days work

It’s very interesting to hear about the new ways fertilizer is being applied and only needing 1/3rd needed to grow the same crops, but my biggest fear to that is once farmers start using 1/3rd needed the fert. Company’s are going to triple their prices if not quadruple the price, making all farmers upgrade to all new equipment or they are going to pack it in and either rent their land out or sell it all together

The ugly issue with fertilizer is the runoff entering streams and causing algae and plant blooms choking those bodies off.
Reducing your fertilizer usage by 66% will help control that issue

I love the duality of talking about fully automated planting, then next sence the markers on the planter come out. All you need now is a peace sign button and born to farm on your hat.
