ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

The ordinary people who lived through the pains and partings, the sufferings and horrors of WW1 and WW2 knew what really mattered in life... and still does.
I'm 75 now and first saw this movie at age 10 or 11. So powerful. I am in awe at how clean the movies were back then. No nudity, no rolling around in bed. No "F" word. Yet this movie / story is enduring.
They just don’t make movies like they used to.
@@markdagostino9666 Amen on that.
Absolutely, could not agree more, I am five years younget than you and I exepct like me, you have seen this film many times, especially on TV and thouight it corny, not realistic, dubbed etc but now with the years now gone by, especiall;y watching it on my 66" Smart TV and stereophonic speakers how truly good it was. Simply, this film has magic, grandeur and romance which trumps all the rubbish films that come out now.
Me too!
@@markdagostino9666They do but theres a lot more movies and types of movies so these kinds are less popular
A hundred and seven dislikes of this clip, and here I am at 65, blubbering like a baby at the sheer beauty of this music and how well it fits the message. That should tell you something about where we are now as a society. Good thing I can blubber in the privacy of my own home; I'd hate to shame myself in public.
Don`t be ashamed to "Blubber" Benjamin, I am an 87-year-old, and I saw this movie at the Majestic Cinema in Leeds around 1958/9. I cannot tell you how many times I have played this number on my PC (and before that on my stereo set) and I shed a tear or two every time I see or hear this fantastic number. I simply cannot understand why Mitzi Gaynor was not a "Number One", she has everything, she sings, dances, (I have been to one of her cabaret performances), and she can act most of the other stars of her era out of sight, plus she is probably one of the most beautiful ladies ever to grace Hollywood.
I don’t know you .but you are amazing and not alone 🥂🙏
Same here..and im 76!! IN A MILLION ..THERES ALWAYS ..ONE!! ENJOY
Im 49. Those who dislike, do not understand. Those who don't understand are missing out.
58 and saw this as a boy in the early 70's for the first time. Still enchanted and mesmerized by this musical. ❤
I was a 23-year old Englishman, recently arrived in Port of Spain Trinidad. An old school friend took me to a party where he said you will meet the most beautiful woman in the West Indies. We saw each other through the crowd. Our hearts skipped a beat. This became our song..
they don't make beauty like this anymore
NO THEY DON'T
@@Getrealpeeps No they don't. South Pacific is the pinnacle.
My Dad loved to play and sing this song… he passed over 30 years ago, but I can still hear him sing this, memories can be wonderful.
💯% My mum used to sing this around the house while watering plants, folding clothes etc. l still remember all the words... She passed 22 years ago, and l still remember every musical song that she used to sing. I'm now 67, and recently retired, but l used many of these songs as props in my English classes - the kids would love them, especially 'Happy Talk' from this same movie..😂👍
So beautiful and deeply touching and a reminder of how things used to be and should be still. I used to hear these songs on my aunt’s radio when I was a small boy and they have never left me. I was blessed to have experienced all this and at that age when you absorb so much and your imagination is at its most vivid.
A reminder of music my parents brought me up to listen to mostly at Christmas...1950's...
What a sound system my devined for the love of his listen...my mother...even in marriage secrets unspoken(yet known) keeps love alive...so never did They allow Broken Hearts to exist..
.
A great Movie and score! But we should not forget that the underlying message of the film was the deep rascism in the US at the time. I am sure we don’t want to return to that kind of society 😢
I,Sir, thoroughly agree. We are blessed to have lived in these times.
So gorgeous, both music and setting. Filmed at 'Hanalei Bay' on Kauai, Hawaii. 💙
Was a caretaker for my mom who died at 100. In her last year her mind started to drift but an old musical like this would come on TCM she would perk up and remember all the lyrics. Arthritis meant she could no longer play them on the piano like when we were kids but she loved to sing along. We lived in Chicago but every year in October for their anniversary dad arranged to be in NYC on business and they would take in a show or two so she remembered seeing them on stage as well as in the movies and would come to life
How wonderful wonderful...................................
God bless you for everything you did for your mother. You were a blessing in her life.
That's for sharing that beautiful memory.
What a nice tribute to your mom. She must have loved you very much.
Thank you for sharing, always keep your memories close
Lovely .beautiful song and beautiful memories .
How lucky I was that my parents instilled a love of these musicals in me. 😍😍...(and my father added Westerns to the mix 😊)
I had a near-death experience recently, and during the ordeal, when "Time stood still" (has anybody out there ever experience something similar ?)....the theme song of this movie 'jumped' into head 'from nowhere". I could clearly remember my mother miming this song numerous times....she just l-o-v-e-d it. PRICELESS memories. RIP Mother...Thank you for the good upbringing you and dad gave us 🙏.
Yes, I had an experience, from, or of, a passed friend. Your mother wanted to give you an "ooomph", just at that moment in time. That was a gift.
it's all about love isn't it?
I met my wife across a table at a presentation . She smiled and we chatted then I asked her out. We were both shy but we knew we were right together 47 years this year
She sings this to me as she loves musicals
Some Enchanted Evening is one of the most romantic songs ever sung. I watched this with my grandmother and mother several times as a young boy. We all loved the film and especially this song. Years ago, my wife didn't believe me when I told her realistic the lyrics seem to me. It can happen. Strangers meet and fall in love in a variety of ways; some at first sight.
In 1958, my entire 6th grade class walked to the movies after having a box lunch at a public park in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This was our ‘graduation’ gift from our teacher, Mr. Donald Williams. What a wonderful memory. Thank you Mr. Williams.
The Sound of his laughter will sing in your dreams.Oscar Hammerstein was a romantic idealist and poet.My favorite lyricist.
I missed so many shows; but I get to see them now.
Andrew Loyd Webber reckons this is possibly the best song ever written. I think he might be right.
I agree.
PARENTS TOOK ME TO ALL THE MUSICAL MOVIES IN THE 60'S AND I REMEMBER THIS ONE VIVIDLY. THEY HAD THE BROADWAY VERSIONS ALBUMS AND I CAN SING TO ALL OF THEM. THIS TOUCHING SONG IS BEYOND ROMANTIC AND LEAVES ME CRYING EVERY TIME. WHAT A MOVIE! DID IT WIN ANY AWARDS?
The movie received 10 Acadeny Award nominations. It won one Oscar - for Best Sound. As you may know, James Michener's first novel, "Tales of the South Pacific," was a fictionalized account of his experiences in the Pacific during WW II. The success of his book gave rise to his great career, to the play, and then to this movie. My father was based on the real island during the war - it was a staging base for troops who would move on to fight on other islands. He knew of the Frenchman, and saw the real island fictionally named Bali Hai in this story.
I can BARELY hear this, & I already have the volume turned all the way up
You have to have at least the choice of good volume or the quality of the music cannot be fully appreciated.
Same here!

Some Enchanted Evening you may see a stranger and fall in love!!!
they were gorgeous, and sounded gorgeous....when music sounded magical
What a great movie! Beautiful music.
My mum told me the song Some enchanted evening was her and my dad's song. Their eyes had met across a dance floor in Dover (England) in 1944. He was in the army, she the women's air force.
Probably the greatest show tune ever written by the genius of Richard Rodgers and fine lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein.
I first saw this film as a teenager. I’m now nearly 80. I loved it then and I love it now. I have the video of it as well as all of the other Rodgers and Hammerstein films. I’ve also seen it on stage several times, the last time in London, at the Barbican. It was a great production, that one.I believe that you never get tired of listening to the music of R and H.
L Torres j saw it in 1954 in the first " cinémascope " of this erea , j have always the vinyl of South Pacific " j did't forget this movie j'm very old
How very true these movies and songs are never got sick of them I was teanager them.
Absolutely. They talk of Sondheim today.... phooey
RH are the kings of the beautiful music. Andrew Lloyd Weber said this is the one song he wishes he had written.

Rodgers and Hammerstein introduced something that had never been done before: 'the conditional love song..'..this sequence begins with Nellie musing to herself, "Wonder how it feels..." so utterly lovely...
This is back when movies were real, just solid acting, singing etc. They were great. That's why they still are great.
Who in God's name thumbs this down? Maybe the greatest musical of all time!
Yes. The greatest.
Sad and unknowable people 🙈 this is so lovely

Just watched this video of this masterpiece. Once I have found this music, will never let it go...🙏👏👏
Lindo filme. Lindos actores (Rossano Brazzi e Mitzy Gaynor ) . Lindo tema musical. Quanto Rossano Brazzi nao teria pago para, elem dos seus belos atributos pessoais, ter uma voz assim. The sung was sung by the operatic singer Giorgio Tozzi.💖💖
For me this song was part of an invaluable life lesson! I found my true love one enchanted evening forty years ago and I never let her go ! I am so thankful I was never into playing games , and never afraid to commit because through life’s ups and downs I never dream alone ❤️
That's so lovely. Beautifully said.

Wonderful song wonderful guy ! Of course you would think about it !! He is just gorgeous!
He's so gorgeous I wouldn't even have to think about it.
I was 8 years old when my father took me and two of my younter siblings to see this movie. My mother was in the hospital having the 4th of what would eventually be 10 children. My father made us put our hands over our eyes when the "sexy" parts came on lol. He was about 32-33 at the time. I absolutely love eveything about this movie, the sadness, the love, the music, the memories. I have watched it many, many times over and over. My wonderful father is long gone but I will always have the memory of his sharing this movie with me and my siblings so many years ago.
I came from a big family with lots of wonderful family memories. Can so identify with your special memory. So lovely reading this 💜.
wonderful story, God bless you and your Dad
The whole scene, not just the music, is so touching and genuine...and so missed in today's "entertainment."
I remember seeing this when I was in my early teens. I and many others thought Rossano Brazzi was the epitome of gorgeous and sexy rolled into one and Mitzi Gaynor sparkled in her role. So lovely to remember when there was no swearing; no blatant sex, and a pleasure to go to the cinema. Such a wonderful movie.
the world needs more romance in these troubled times.
My dad used to sing this on Sundays before dinner….was late 1960,s:::: My dad sounded just like him❤❤❤❤
Mine too Susie! When I hear this song I always think of my dad. R.I.P.
Hermosa película y la música increíble. Gracias
great song
South Pacific was the first movie my parents brought me with them to a movie theater ❤ I still know all the songs and I’m now 79 years old
So wonderful
South Pacific is the best war movie of all time
I was not even born when this film was made. I grew up listening to the songs from South Pacific when my dad put his records on. His name was Theo Breen and I have lovely memories of him when I hear “Some enchanted evening”.
Our church put on South Pacific, and my Mom was in it. She sang in the choir as far back as I can remember.
Too bad they don’t make movies like this anymore. Everything that is produced now days, is sick, twisted, dark & depressing or It’s so unbelievably stupid it isn’t even worth watching.
Haha we had the whole soundtrack on an 8-track tape!
@@rconger384 well bully for you
Brazzi may be lip synched BUT the voice fit him beautifully. He was perfect.
He wasn't lip synching, he was singing, another singers voice was dubbed later much to his annoyance as he hadn't been informed that R&H were going to dub him or anyone else for that matter. Mitzy Gaynor and Ray Walston (Luther Billis) were the only original singing voices used in the entire movie.
@@shoutinghorse His voice was definitely dubbed. The vocals were supplied by Giorgio Tozzi, an opera singer.
@@smudger671
Rossano Brazzi thought he had an operatic voice and was terribly hurt when he found out that R&H didn't agree and dubbed him. John Kerr and Juanita Hall were also put out at finding they had been dubbed, esp Hall who had played the roll of bloody Mary on Broadway.
@@shoutinghorse Yes I realise that. Many actors don't have the vocal powers that are needed, or are maybe a bit past their best. Another good example is Christopher Plummer in the Sound Of Music. He has a very weak voice (there's a clip of him actually singing) and it's easy to see why he was dubbed in the film.
@@smudger671 Christopher Plummer was dubbed by Bill Lee in the Sound of Music. Bill Lee dubbed John Kerr in South Pacific.
It has been 51 years since I played the part of Emile. These lines come back so easy. It is a love affair I still hold dear.
And you were a very handsome man.
Belated 51 year Bravo!
Thank you for your performance!
When I first saw "South Pacific," I was a teenager and "Bali Hai" bowled me over even more intensely than this powerful scene. But I later realized R&H accomplished a magic in this scene unequalled in any other musical. The music is indescribable, but visually, there is truly a "wide screen " effect that frames the scene perfectly. That and the newly launched stereophonic sound were used here far more effectively than in just about any other movie I have seen in the theater. The images of Brazzi and Gaynor together are truly iconic, to use a term that has lost its meaning, but in this case, warranted. The jacket for the LP (vinyl) with Brazzi and Gaynor on the beach was everywhere after its release, and is still so evocative of the era when this classic was so fresh and full of hope and "romance.' It is far and away my favorite record cover.
Saw this movie when i was 6...believe it or not, after being widowed for 4+ years, I have found a wonderful woman (also a widow) with whom I am totally smitten. This tune reinforces that I have witnessed "that enchanted evening". The universe is a random place, and that a person could have such an impact on me exists. By the way, she's nuts about me too!! (No bull cookies, she told me so...) Go Emile and Nellie...I am living your dream!!
Good luck to you. Magnetic atraction like this is rare. You need to savour and value it. Romance isn't dead!
I was ten when my mother took me to see this wonderful film,l am now in my fifties and still love this film ,it make me cry every time l see it.
@@terryhaydon6785 But, did you see it in Todd-A-O in Asbury Park, N.J. with Bridge o the River Kwai playing across the street, and a replica of the bridge built that crossed the avenue? Now that's unforgettable.

I was a member of the cast of South Pacific at the Shaw theatre in London in the early 90s the Stock Exchange amateur dramatics society the late June King was director. If anyone has any photos of the show please let me know.A beautiful song some enchanted evening it reminds me of someone advanced in years who true love has evaded suddenly finding it in a unexpected place and time.
My dad always sang this song and I watched the film a lot of times, enjoyed it because of him. Though I was just a child. Feel so teary now 😭😭

From the Golden Era of Hollywood musicals! Sadly, this shall never come our way again!
South Pacific remains an important part of my life’s tapestry. Beautifully so.
Same as you. The Odean Brighton 1956?
Shown with a new concept of filming in Cinemascope 55?. The visuals were spectacular on a huge curved screen...
Mine too. Always remember my Mum singing these songs, filling our hearts with happiness..❤️
Mario Fabritzi and Mitzi Gaynor. Thank you for posting.
One of my favorite movies--so romantic, and wonderful music. But sad too. I wish Lt. Cable had married the native girl.
Too sad that the character died and never was able to come back to his island girl
Amazing, this was made in 1958 & the beautiful, gifted Mitzi Gaynor is 89 years old. Memories must make her happy (especially with Rossano Brazzi). Darlings, 2 Darlings. LUV Dorothy
Brings tears to my eyes even now... first heard this lovely ballad when I was 7 years old, a family theatre production in a Lincoln, Ne basement, 1960. I was enchanted, and still moves my soul at 65. I am transported to a time when I first new love and later, romantic love. Perfecto, Perfecto.
I was 8 when this came out and since my dad wouldn't visit the cinema my mother dragged me along 3 times......this song takes me back to 1958 .
Yes, not ashamed to say brings a tear to my eye and a lump in the throat. The beauty of an autumn love.
It always moves me this way - when your true love, the TRUE one comes along, don’t let them go - I speak from experience.
Yes, and somehow, Bali Hai, seeing it, and hearing the song, triggered past life memories of living in Tahiti with my true love.
I'm a sap. I just teared up reading how you teared up as a child!
What a sensational performance of this song! Impeccable!❤️
I grew up with this on parents record player and movie-day dreamed about it. “Younger the Springtime too”.
Its so sad that the volume on this video is bad and so much too low! 😢

The most beautiful song filmed in the most beautiful way - art at it's most moving
I saw South Pacific at the Jones Beach Theater and Guy Lombardo's orchestra played the music and Guy Lombardo's boat brought him to the stage which was surrounded by water,
What a magnificent setting. The songs in this R&H musical are sublime.
I always thought that the casting of Mitzi Gaynor as Nellie Forbush was a stroke of genius. I saw Gemme Craven play the same part on stage and that worked wonderfully as well.
The three levels of persona are: high class, middle class, low class. Mitzi Gaynor has a high class persona which makes her unattainable for most men. This acts as a counterpoint to the background of being a farm girl from Arkansas and elevates the character.
@@artrogish Thus making it believable that the high class, suave, gorgeous Frenchman would fall in love with her. To me, Rossano Brazzi & Mitzi Gaynor are on par with Clark Gable & Vivien Leigh as the perfect pairing in a movie.

Lovely memories my wonderful dad took me to see this as a child I’ve always held these songs very special , he always sang them to me when I was young xx
Giorgio Tozzi dubbed Rozzano Brazzi's singing. But no matter. The song is beautiful, and performed perfectly. Such magic and splendor from a glorious age of movie making that is sadly Gone With The Wind.
@It’s CalledCapitalism: What do you mean “But no matter”? Rossini Brazzi, Juanita Hall and John Kerr were ALL dubbed. Evidently they were hired for acting not singing skill. Juanita Hall created the role on Broadway and was singing in FLOWER DRUM SONG on Broadway at the time this was being made. But Richard Rodgers, ass that he was, insisted she be dubbed.
Rozzano Brazzi could sing, but not at the level required for this musical. Richard Rodgers was right to dub the black girl.
Wonderful memories of this musical, i would be 18 then now 84 but this period of films is still full of songs dances etc that i can still dance and sing to. So sad that movies are down the drain re violence, bad language, sexually explicit scenes ugh. We they to find films on TV that are entertaining and leave a smile at the end. Alas not very many, but the hey day of musicals are long gone. Ah well my memory is still good so that's a blessing. Thank you South Pacific for a few moments of happy smiles to me.
I am an 88 year old, and I agree with you completely.
When I was in high school our brother school , Cardinal Hayes in the Bronx, put on this play. I saw it with all the St. Pius girls. I fell in love with the play and all the songs. The students did an incredible job-
Ah the days of Brother and Sister schools. The jocks could snicker all they wanted at theater nerds (before that word meant something cool) but no better way to get to really know girls than rehearsal for our joint projects. Couldn't sing or, well, act but Father Del showed me how to convincingly roll dice so I could have a minor role in Guys and Dolls. Finally worked up the nerve to ask how he got so good at it and he laughed - "Let's just say I wasn't born in the seminary."
@@mikegalvin9801 I love that story, thanks
First saw SP in the theater with my mom, I was 6. I thought Brazzi was an ‘Old Grampa Man’, he was all of 42 😂. Now I’m 71, still one of my favorite soundtracks. Of course Rossano couldn’t sing, this is Metropolitan Opera singer Giorgio Tozzi.
It`s amazing how tastes change. When I was an 18 year old I thought that my father was a bit of an idiot. Then when I hit 22 years of age, I was truly amazed at how clever he had become in four years.

Ditto with my parents and older sister. I was 7 in 1958. My mom had the soundtrack on 45s, which I enjoyed listening to frequently in elementary school.
We had this LP when I was growing up, I think with Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza. I must heard it many times, and the songs left a strong impression, especially "You've Got to Be Taught", which I understood very well was about prejudice, even when I was about eight. I suppose that years later, in the 1960s and 1970s, I thought of this kind of music as a bit square or old-fashioned. But now that I have lived a bit and understand how precious and rare true love is, "Some Enchanted Evening" never fails to reduce me to tears.
My mom had had many albums from the movies and stage shows. The album cover showed Mary Martin.
@@nedraleggett6837 Yes, that must be the same album we had at home - the photo rings a bell. Perhaps my older sister still has it - I'll have to ask. It must be a bit worn in the grooves, but that doesn't matter for music this good!
Aside from Tozzi's rendition for the film, there are two other fine recordings of this song--one by Ezio Pinza(the original Emile), the other by the great Jackie Evancho!!!
@@AllenJones-w3p Thanks, Allen, you clearly know your stuff, much better than I do. I'm fairly sure it was Martin and Pinza whose rendition I heard, because the names (especially the exotic Ezio Pinza) made an impression on me. Tozzi and Gaynor are great, too, although I never saw the film other than this sequence here. Either way, it shivers my timbers.
I just fall in love with love whenever I hear and see this. Oh How I want to be her!
One of the all-time greatest ballads, a fine example of the craft of R's & H. Beautifully lip-synch'ed by heart-throb Rossano Brazzi from Giorgio Tozzi's wonderful flexible baritone voice on the playback sound on the film set. Those were the days when pure talent and the unquestioned authority pf the director - in this case rejecting Brazzi's voice for the singing because he couldn't sing - ruled over fashionable in-vogue 'style'. Tell that to young people today and they don't know what the feck you're talking abut.
Enzio Pinza's version is excellent. I have the original cast CD.
What can you say to that other than "yes".
Timeless and beautifully written!
These movies were my whole world growing up, literally. I keep hoping to find a girl like the women in these old musical pictures that I can sing to and dance with just like the men do. Who will fall in love with me too.
Andreas Centimental ♥️
might be that you've looking for the wrong gender this whole time :P
Lovely...

Just saw the 60th anniversary showing of the movies in the theater. While I have seen this movie several times, this was the first time on the big screen. There is something special about seeing it in in the theater!
Indeed, like 2001, it must be experienced in the theaterr. You can breathe the salt air.
How did we go from transcendental romance to superheroes?
Excellent transfer. Thank you!
I notice that back in movies of the 40s and 50s, male leads were often middle aged. They would be like 40, talking about settling down and finding a wife, having some kids. Like in White Christmas, Bing Crosby was 51. What's up with that? In reality, most people were married by 25 and started a family in their 20s, didn't they? In this film, Mitzi is only 27 but Rossano Brazzi was 42.
There's a lot of guys in their 60's and 70's who get tired of a wife and family who forgets them after they spent their lives working to support them, who then come here to the islands and start a new family here. This is the new home of happy recycled men! 😊
Once you have found her, never let her go 🥰
My favorite part
My parents took me to the Albee theater in Cincinnati ( a converte Vaudeville house) for my seventh birthday to see this. Now what parent takes a seven year old little boy to see a movie musical right? Well I pulled a little trick on them. They had bought me a nice toy and a cake to compensate me for taking me to a move that they wanted to see. I LIKED THE MOVIE! I could not tell you what the toy was but I still remember the Albee and the lyrics to many of the songs.
