  • Episode 249 features a tribute to the astrologer Robert Zoller, who passed away in January, and was a pioneer in the revival of the study and practice of medieval astrology.
Zoller's book The Arabic Parts in Astrology: A Lost Key to Prediction (1980) was one of the first books which helped to contribute to the revival of traditional astrology in the 1980s and 90s.
Later he was one of the principal founders of Project Hindsight in 1992, alongside Robert Schmidt and Robert Zoller, and he produced several translations from Latin under the auspices of that project, including parts of Guido Bonatti, Al Kindi’s On Stellar Rays, and the Liber Hermetis.
He left Hindsight due to creative differences relatively early in the project, but continued teaching and promoting medieval astrology.
He began offering a written certification course in medieval astrology, which a number of high profile astrologers graduated from, including Benjamin Dykes and Christopher Warnock.
He later received some recognition for his predictions about the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, and was featured in a 2005 History Channel episode on the topic.
He struggled with Parkinson's Disease, which developed in the 1990s and left him debilitated much of the time by the 2000s, thus slowing his creative output in later years. He passed away on January 24, 2020.
The first part of this podcast episode features a discussion with Benjamin Dykes about Zoller's life and work. Ben studied and attained certification with Zoller, and since then has gone on to continue much of what Zoller started in terms of recovering the medieval tradition.
The second half of the episode features an hour long interview that I conducted with Zoller on my old podcast called Traditional Astrology Radio on January 9, 2011. The audio quality is not very good, but the content of the interview does a pretty good job of covering the full range of Zoller's life and work.

He was a fantastic, smart man. I was one of his aides that took care of him through his parkinson's disease. He in return was teaching me about astrology. RIP Robert, I miss you.

This was fantastic. I think for a lot of us who are relatively new, it can be easy to take for granted how much work has been done to pave the way, but hearing interviews like this really puts it into perspective just how good we have it now. Thanks for sharing this, and also for having Ben back on! I always get a ton out of y’alls discussions

This is a treasure - thanks, Chris. I caught how Zoller said to you "The difference between America and England is that... we have big mouths... we talk about everything and they don't," how prophetic (so to speak) with all that is going on at the moment :)

I am about to hear the interview with Zoller, but already wanted to comment. This was so great, so so great, as if Benjamin would be reading my mind along with the whole process of transitioning from modern to traditional. These feelings and thinking were/are exactly what i have been/i am through since 2017. I remember back in 2010 when I first bought a modern astrology book, i read only the few paragraphs of the traditional planets, and jumped right away to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto where I read with passion. Nowadays, I see a chart and my eyes go straight to traditional concepts, then I push the modern button moderately when needed. Mindblowing like a hibrid being would think.

The last bit about fate vs free will and the person with special abilities changing the fate of someone or kinda "removing" the fate or the limitations from them was very interesting.
Sadly, the audio is messy and I couldn't understand a good 30% of what Robert said.
I would be VERY interested in knowing more about how would one go to remove the influences of the planets/destiny/fate from oneself.
What is he talking about? Theurgy? Alchemy? Energy cultivation in taoist terms (building up light/rainbow/whatever bodies capable of escaping physical reality and limitations imposed on the physical body by the planets)?
    Anybody knows more?

I may add up the listening hours to figure out how long it took to find this specific episode. 😜 kidding. It was actually an episode I had zero interest in and just picked it where it was exactly what I was looking for.
I still don’t get the fear about charts. Just don’t give anyone any reason to want to kill you. If I look at my lots and some other things I have zero concerns. Definitely reading Zoller’s book on the lots even though it looks like it goes into more than I’m concerned about. So far I’m a few books into hermetic philosophy where I’m not fond of parts while also already knowing most of it through other methods. Not saying specifically how, but I’ll admit I have a strong dislike of modern Christianity and organized religion as a whole. I’m not quite grasping why there’s so much emphasis on being free of astrology not at all getting the point while assuming it has more to do with mortality. If you hate your natal chart that much.. I mean, there’s some major issues going on. If I had to do a reading where someone was that upset over a placement where they wanting to “re-roll their playable character” I’d be freaked out they were of the dominant religion. Just saying..
I’m fine with psychological astrology since it’s so dependent on Jung since it’s very similar while only being a slight left turn at the next yield sign. And I also agree natal charts are dull to a point feeling something is missing where the lots are MUCH more interesting.
So far hermeticism is intuitive. Testing different texts with different translations just making sure… seems too simple. If you just focus in on what you define as “you” as in that sense of consciousness you’ll know most of what’s in there. You probably wouldn’t relate to anyone else anymore so it may not be worth it if you’re really invested in whatever you’re invested in.
I’m glad I stumbled on this episode. Wish the call quality was slightly better. 😭

There's been construction going on on the outside of my apartment building for months now. It's terrible. We tried to squeeze this interview in during their hour long lunch break, but then it ran out and the hammering started up again on the walls, so we had to wrap it up.
