What should I put under the report number for a DOT inspection report? I have the stickers as well and just confused about that

Hey Jeremy. If the motor carrier is "too busy" or "the mechanic is on vacation" or the boss says, "don't worry, that truck should be just fine. He'll look at it when he gets time" am I going to be out of compliance if I drive it? Is this a refusal to work that gets a driver in trouble?

On a paper DVIR does the odometer reading be at PreTrip reading or PostTrip reading?

At 4:10 "don't complete a DVIR for a truck defect that doesn't effect safety or potential breakdown."
Question: What if the driver heard an abnormally loud or strange sound coming from the engine, but didn't know specifically what it was or the risk of operation. Is this a defect you suggest we use a DVIR for? If so, must a mechanic sign off before the vehicle is placed in service again? You suggested not using dvir for things we know don't effect safety or breakdown. But what if we don't know? My question really is, does the fact that the driver feels uncomfortable enough to note a defect on a DVIR require a mechanics opinion and signature?

Best to fill out a DVIR and have it checked out by a mechanic.

@@Trucksafe thank you. If the driver completes the DVIR is the carrier obligated to sign the form either with or without repair before using the truck again?

Yes, the carrier would have to sign off that either the issue was corrected or there was no problem

If a required repair is made, is a paper DVIR required since ELDs have no way for mechanics to certify repairs have been made?

    • @Trucksafe

There needs to be some certification from whoever made the repairs but it doesn’t necessarily have to be on a paper DVIR since FMCSA guidance says all required records can be generated and retained electronically.

I'm wondering what to do when a vehicle, say, doesn't have a DEF tank - do I put an NA in the box or leave it blank?

    • @biancawall8474

Always put N/A - better to do this than leave something blank or it seems as if you didn’t inspect the tank

I have a doubt...is it true that the report should always be hand filled?
