  • Guitar of the Day! Adam Jones' 1979 Les Paul Custom is the second "Inspired by Gibson Custom" signature after Kirk Hammett's "Greeny" 1959 Les Paul Standard. $1499 is expensive for Epiphone, but these are supposed to be higher-tier than the "Inspired by Gibson" line with proper Custom Shop specs.

Forgot to mention the IGC versions also come with Switchcraft for the toggle and output jack!
$1499 definitely isn't cheap for an Epi, but it's pretty spec accurate to the underrepresented Norlin-era with that 3-piece maple neck and actual mother of pearl inlays for way less than a Gibson Custom. What do we think? 🤔

I bought 2 sort of by accident.
I did a “Pre order” with guitar center and then immediately after I saw Epiphone had them in stock and were doing free 1 day shipping. So I placed another order with Epiphone directly.
I had to wait a bit to call guitar center to cancel the order and by the time I got through to calling…they had shipped it! 😂
Unfortunately the one from guitar center has a VERY off center neck pickup, so it’ll have to be a return. But the Epiphone direct one is BEAUTIFUL. Very very high quality and worth the price in my opinion.

    Been playing 14 years now
I bought an epiphone "norm burst" Joe bonnamasa Les Paul on accident thinking i placed the order for the 1959 Epiphone les paul reissue. I used to have a $500 sunburst standard les paul from around 2010 but i sold it cause i was getting more into strats at the time. It was a great guitar and it made me appreciate the Les Paul shape but the fretboard wood or inlays on mine had a weird plasticky friction feel that made me feel like i was playing a "cheaper" version as compared to a cheap Gibson. It may have just been my copy. So in 2020 when i saw the 1959's epi's coming out, i said, i have to get that!
I get the Joe bonamassa one realizing i ordered the wrong thing but i gave it a shot and for $800 with a hard case included i completely forgot about the 1959 reissue. It was like a day and night difference from my 2010 $500 epiphone from 10 years ago. Not only was i mind blown, but with my interest peaked, i had to check out the rest of the lineup to compare with my JB. I managed to try out the 50's and 60's Epiphone les pauls from 2020 and the whole lineup has dramatically increased in quality/playability. Whoever made my JB les paul took some serious pride in their work. I wasn't exactly into the color at first but it's grown on me. These new modern day epiphone les pauls are really giving Gibson a run for their money!

Going by recent Gibson and Epiphone trends I have a theory.
Gibson have been focusing hard on producing these crazy investment level collectors guitars while not overly pushing their standard lines.
Epiphone however have massively stepped up quality of production and also their marketing and price point.
I have a feeling that Gibson may want Epiphone with their build quality improving so drastically and giving a lot of players what they want to take the place of perhaps the Gibson standard line of old while Gibson will continue to focus on these special edition collaborations etc etc.
Just a theory I’ve had and to be honest I wouldn’t be mad about it because I think the new generation epiphone stuff is outstanding.

Honestly, for all the people talking crap about Epiphone prices (to which I agree with to some extent), I think depending on how this feels in the hand, this isn't a bad deal. They even replaced that Epi Probucker with a Gibson custombucker in the neck while retaining the bridge Seymour Duncan, its the 70's spec LPC in that aged silverburst with the Gibson headstock shape.
If you want a silverburst LPC from Gibson, be prepared to cough up 5k+ so, and even for the standard version, you're going to pay double of what this costs. Adam Jones and Tool aside, if you're a fan of LPC's and just want the proper look, I don't think this is a bad option tbh.

way i look at it is they put in the hardware most people planned on changing to that anyways so they just did a big favor to modders that are weary or new to it and dont wanna do that or pay a guitar shop to do it for them as well now they can get the great wiring and pickups straight from factory. is it expensive sure its a bit high but long neck tenons an open book headstock gibson pickups cts pots 50s wiring and mallory caps what is there to complain about at getting a gibson les paul custom that would be like 6k plus tax for like what 1300 plus tax? provided the QC is rock steady

@@deadshot4245 These guitars need to be on point and the fact that opinions now seem very divisive one way or the other, it's even harder to tell if these are good value for money. I've tried one since and while I like the guitar, it just didn't do anything for me. The #1 workhorse in my collection atm is a Greco EG800 (Japanese made lawsuit era Les Paul Custom) from the 80's and to me, that guitar feels way better in the hand to play, sounds better, and I think is the better guitar and I paid significantly less than for one of these new Epi's. That being said, I can appreciate someone just wanting the proper looks and specs, and I'll admit it's an extremely good looking guitar.
I actually have a Maybach Lester (German brand making classic American style guitars) being made from their Czech custom shop at the moment. Once it comes in, I'll try and remember to update this comment with a review as I own Gibson's as well and I'm very curious to see how the Maybach stacks up against a Les Paul Standard given that Maybach is targeting custom shop level appointments for prices slightly cheaper than Gibson USA.

If it has the epiphone neck angle it will hold tune better than a Gibson. I’ve had a Gibson sg and it would never hold tune, even after a set up and new nut. Just got an Epiphone 61 sg with the vibrola and it holds tune great with no set up. The neck angle plays a part on how well the string slips through the nut and Gibsons have a harsher angle
