Great looking axe. Glad Epiphone finally got the head stock correct. Also, if haven’t done so already, check out the early eighties made in Japan GRECO Les Pauls customs. My ‘84 Greco Les Paul Custom plays just good as any Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Get both. I bought this Epiphone when it first dropped. It’s a fantastic guitar. I now have a Gibson Custom silverburst on the way. I’m proud to own both. Both serve different purposes. Both are great guitars.
It’s cool if you don’t want a Chinese made Les Paul. The fact that these are constantly out of stock shows that many people are willing to pay this much for a fantastic guitar, with great specs, at a decent price.

Coming from a non-Gibson/Epiphone fan (don’t hate them, don’t love them). This is huge. If I still had a desire to own a Les Paul this would IMMEDIATELY make it to my list; I’m not even an Adam Jones or Tool fan either. I’m a fellow Silverburst fanboy. I know not all from the same era, but I was exposed to them within a short period of time from each other - Matt Heafy 2009/2010-ish era with his silverburst LP custom, Brendon Small/Dethklok Thunderhorse; and Josh Middleton silverburst SG/Eclipse - are all the reasons why I got into silverburst and it becoming my favorite finish. At the time I wanted the LP custom but knew I wouldn’t be able to afford it. I didn’t like the Epiphones at the time cause of the rosewood fretboard and the older headstock (I prefer the new ones). Let’s face it, Epiphone prices creeping up or not, those who can get the Gibsons now are going to continue to get the Gibsons. Epiphone coming close to Gibson specs I don’t think is enough to pull existing Gibson customers - they’ll just buy both. Those who can’t get the Gibson have the alternative of getting this, something which is almost all Gibson in appearance with the exception of name and country of origin. Epiphone is getting more expensive, but it’s still cheaper than getting Gibson. You can compare this Epi LP Custom to some of the more affordable Gibson LP Studio’s, Classics, and even some Standards. But none of them have the same appeal as a Custom. And comparing Custom to Custom, this is still way less expensive. This Adam Jones release is easily my favorite Epiphone release, and I’m with you on preferring it over the Standard. I’m a V guy through and through, but I would take this new Epi LP over his reverse-silverburst V.

I think it’s a great move some players prefer the maple necks but also let’s be honest the Gibson standard is twice the amount but to get a Custom Gibson is at least 5,000 . 1500 , 3000, and 5000 plus are three distinctly different customers the people who buy this epiphone were never going to buy a new Gibson they were more than likely looking towards LTD EC 1000 and Tokais and other import single cuts so in my opinion this will only sell more epiphone and not less Gibsons it’s the best move I’ve seen Gibson make in my lifetime.

  • @NoeAnton
    @NoeAnton 8 месяцев назад +1

I think it DOES make sense, given that even pro level artists nowadays are getting super high specs with guitars in the 1,500 dollar price range. Maybe 20 or 30 years ago it did make a difference construction wise and tone wise and what not, but Gibson has to compete with all the other brands offering amazing guitars at much lower prices than a Gibson just "because the name".

HBD my dude. In the Andertons videos from their visits to Nashville it was openly discussed how the Gibson / Epiphone brand overlap will change. The new strategy appears to be that Epiphone will now expand to include more $1-2000 guitars by leveraging the 'inspired by custom shop' branding and higher spec guitars (USA pickups, Gibson headstock, etc). To make way for this, we can expect that Gibson will move away from producing their lower price-point guitars such as the stripped back satin finish 'specials' etc so there is less competition in this price bracket. Right now, we're in the transition period it seems.

The way I see it, the people that can afford a custom shop signature guitar are not going to be interested in an Epiphone. If they can afford the 'real thing', that's what they'll get. And if they can't get the Gibson version, Epiphone isn't cutting into Gibson sales because there was no sale in the first place. Gibson are so expensive that you can either afford it or you can't. It's not like PRS SE vs S2 or Yamaha Revstar Indonesia vs Japan. Those are not far off in price, and the SE stuff hurt S2 sales I'd say. I think PRS are fine with that as it's all bank, but still.

Great video, Happy Birthday! This is fascinating... one way or another, these high price Epiphones must be selling for them to keep being produced... and the QC standards of the Epiphone factory are just getting higher and higher. It's awesome for all of us guitarists. Obviously, we need a new Adam Jones sig too lol. Chinese manufacture often gets a lot of hate, but these guys at the Epi factory are clearly masters in their craft and produce some amazing gear. Not all factories operate to the same standards - and it seems some other bad factories taint the reputation of all the rest. I just got myself a new Epi Studio Smokehouse Burst and that's so close to the Gibson for quite a lot less money and it feels/sounds amazing. It just means we can all access great guitars, no matter the budget. As far as cannibalizing the lines goes, Gibson seem to be pretty smart about it - there's still enough value in the Gibson brand for it to be highly desirable and there's a high price on that name. My latest purchase is a prime example - I love my Epi, but I'm still going to very likely go and get the Gibson version at some point, or at least some form of Gibson (custom etc). I'm loving this Epiphone/Gibson era right now, let alone discussion around the Norlin years (yes the volute is great). Keep rockin' 🤘

Happy Birthday Ray. Being a former Gibson employee of the Henry Juszkiewicz Era the USA factory then put more of a emphasis on how many they had going out the door than on quality. Not sure what it is like now under KKR ownership but I am willing to bet it's still the same. Epiphone on the other hand they can not afford to make those mistakes as more Epiphone's are sold than Gibson's. Cause if Epiphone did what Gibson does it would not be good for their business for the factory in China cause Gibson/Epiphone would just find another factory if it came to that. So yeah the factory in China puts more attention to quality.

I think you’re right about the LP Standard if you want a LP Custom like Adam Jones. But if you take away the Adam Jones influence… mahogany neck, no weight relief, ebony board, nitro finish, and real MOP makes it a worth buy (especially the used ones are going under $2K).
The Epiphone is a better buy again if you’re going for a LP Custom. Some details I love is the pozi strap buttons, Schiller style tuners, and Gibson/SD pick. It also sounds like the neck profile may match the Norlin era shape vs the Standard having a 70s shape.
I think both are good options but depends what you’re looking for. I know lots of people who don’t like LP customs in general and prefer Standards.

I like that Gibson and Epiphone are doing this. We have more variety now and that's a good thing. Gibson was never about making an inexpensive guitar. Hell, even an original 1959 Gibson Les Paul would run you $450 with its case. That was a lot of money back in 1959. Epiphone can make the signatures anywhere from $1299 and up having the Gibson headstock at $1499 or maybe you're just fine with the Kalamazoo headstock. You can also buy an even cheaper one and put in your own electronics. I think Epiphone will eventually have a full USA line making their own classics. People don't know or have forgotten that
Epiphone also have their history, older than Gibson, and used to be even more expensive until Gibson bought them out. Les Paul himself went to Epiphone before Gibson to have his signature made, they turned him down and Gibson worked with him, the rest is history.

I would say that the Gibson will be superior quality because they put more tine into it. The wood is aged longer, more time spent sanding, etc. I believe China has come a long way, but at that price I’m going to go with a Japanese made LP copy

Man , hello, I used to work for gibson, ( not the custom shop branch, but the USA Montana acoustic ), sorry to break to you but Gibson USA doesn’t put more time into it, the wood also isn’t aged longer either, as a matter of fact, they don’t allow the wood to dry as much as they should like the folks at PRS for example.
Gibson can do great things, but specially during Henry era, they didn’t give a shit.
If you guitar was made on a Friday, good luck, majority of workers are alcoholics or drinkers, and Friday people don’t give a shit, they want the 5pm to come to start the weekend. Gibson is a great manufacturer, but they rely on reputation from the past rather the really having the customer in mind.
Little info that might even get me in trouble.
There was an order once, made by the Japanese sellers that comes to the factory, a full bus of sellers that are allowed to visit , take photos, ask questions about the building process, Gibson takes them for lavish dinners, lunches etc
So one seller, had ordered 50 guitars, with some old specs they had from Gibson, a particular 70s model they want to reissue for the Japanese market.
So , one of the important specs were the they were glued with hide glue (animal source) which added a hefty price tag to each guitar ordered, Gibson argues that it cost more ( 2 k more actually)because this process takes longer to cure.
      So we started building them.
The first ones, in order to dry the glue properly, it had to be left for the next day, ( I used to build the guitar tops, and I had only 3 vacuum presses, which meant I had to do all the tops of all the regular models ( j45, hummingbird, loo, keb mo, j35, j200,etc) alongside with that Japanese special order but Gibson had a deadline and following correct protocol meant reaching out to the Japanese and say, hey we apologize but to dry these properly we gonna need more time.
Instead, what happen was, because the hide glue ones were made at the same time with the other models and with only 3 presses (each top stays on the press for about 10 min), I did what they instructed me, do it as the others just use hide glue for the Japanese ones.
The problem was that because they didn’t allow enough time to dry properly, when the guitars were in the process of painting or buffing, the bracing on the tops start to come unglued. They were upset , they quickly brain stormed and said “ glue all the tops the same, as in use wood glue for it, then once they dry, use a syringe to put ride glue around the top bracing to give the impression that the hide glue was being squeezed out when it happens when you put in the vacuum press.
So don’t have the illusion that Gibson select, treats, dries, or anything for that matter. Guitars that had visual flaws becomes black or dark solid guitars, some guitars that even should be not accept for sale are dispatched, and they joke, heard many time things like, well if they had a problem, they can call, they have a lifetime warranty, just good luck having someone picking up the phone.
If you want a brand that still cares for the customer go with heritage, PRS or musicman in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I love Gibson guitars, have a few, what I’m saying is the integrity of the people behind that name is not there, hope this share some light, rock on
