Imagine being brought to tears because all of your friends are dying around you and you're trapped in the middle of a failed defense against an alien invasion... only for the one particular guy who you've been hunting to then show up and start flailing your comrade's corpse around like an idiot
And then a bhopping scientist in an orange suit comes towards you at the speed of light, fires in your general direction, and then disappears into the horizon as quickly as he came
Black Mesa definitely made the HECU more human as you hear them panicking over the radios, then you see this guy and there's another marine later on who just stares blankly at you. They were sent in not knowing what the hell for and are now face to face with alien invaders, it's enough to drive anybody mad
I'm so glad they went for this voice instead. The voices of HECU in early version of BM sounded really close to the original hl1 which is fine imo but they didn't sound like a human, more like a combine.
Look at his helmet. He's a medic. He's the least combative Marine out of his whole unit, here, and he just saw his entire squad of friends get wiped out by the Xen creatures. He's realizing there's no hope left.

This just reminds me of how heartless gamers actually are in games. If you think about it from the AI's perspective, if they had conscious thoughts or you were in their shoes, being traumatized at seeing your fellow soldiers getting mauled or ripped apart by a headcrab or zombie or get their head blown off with a rocket launcher just to be scarred by the protagonist (or antagonist) throwing a corpse around making it bleed just to slowly kill you, giving you every chance to pick up your gun and try to shoot him.
