Most memorable part of this was realizing that you could tell what the soldiers were up to by listening to what they say. Pretty normal nowadays, but back in Half-Life's day enemies would normally just make noise or chatter. So the one time I heard "LET'S GO!" and all of a sudden had soldiers charging in my face, I realized I had to stop and listen!
Stored as individual words? Well, that explains why they had so much static added, to hide part where they were stitching that many audio files together.
It allows more things to be said but also to be space efficient based on how many single words you'd be repeating in each sentence if you had recorded every line separately.
ThatGenericPyro [A RUclips Channel] Half life is ahead of its time as you can see from every video he made about it. If Half life was the last game ever made, it would have been the greatest and last video game ever
oh yeah. my friends and i would make shit with these voice files back in the day, i even wrote an admin mod plugin similar to vox but for the grunt voice that would play it for the whole server, and also accepted other sound names syntax worked something like: "checking my ass hole.... oh! god!, alien! in! my! ass! 'hc_attack1' 'bodysplat'" it's been like 15 years but i remember those days well
Human Grunts have to be my favorite NPCs ever, they always gave me some kind of goosebumps whenever I found one while playing HL1, just by the fact if there's one, there's a squad. Getting close to a corner and start hearing the heavy static sound in the distance was nerveracking. Also the fact of each one of them being able to survive three point-blank shots of a shotgun, and their accuracy was so cheap. Combines in HL2 are just so... weak, easy to kill, calm, that it took out all the fear factor that Human Grunts had in HL1 that induce into a player of "oh shit, here they come." How the hell did they loss the war against the Combines?
MysticRixel Human grunts are tough but fun. Combine feel weak, don't know how they won when they can't even use a shotgun well. BMS human grunts are fucking stupid, they are way too hard purely because of their aimbot like accuracy. Don't know how Combine won when they have terrible aim even on Hard, the Grunts look more trained for the situation in universe wise.
MysticRixel They lost because the Combine Soldiers in Half-Life 2 we’re not present yet, they probably fought Combine Hunters or something similar during the Seven Hour War.
No tey dont, sometimes they use this system but there are different voice lines. This is justa good system to be abl to make different sentences, Just like hte announcnment system. The grunts sound so badass. No other shooter enemy comes close. I changed up CS with Hgrunt speech in the radio and for hitting players ive added them saying like "Oh medic" etc. Ofc used the death sounds as well and changed the MP5 in CS to sound like the HL one. It got sucha great sound.
It's kind of an unfair comparison, since their voices are distorted, and they're designed for that stiff, clear military walkie talkie type speech, but this sounds more convincing than text to speech today.
Amazing how it doesn't sound too unnatural despite stringing together individual words. I mean, I know it helps that it's military radio chatter, but it's still impressive.

Someone should make a website that's functions like how he's using it - Enter text formatted like he's shown, and get the dialogue in your browser. It'd be really fun.
Maxwell Edison you can do it with the pa system in any goldsrc game (hl1 and it's expansions work) open the console and type "say (words here)" without quotes and it should try to say it if it has the words
yeah there is one but using the word “dictionary” kinda makes it backwards so if you wanting to put in “alpha ass!” you would put in ass! alpha and when writing the words remember to write in lower case
Those aren't using the sentence system, they are single wav files, and that's because they are part of the hgrunt dialogue from before the sentence system was implemented, you can find those same voice lines in the 0.52 alpha
It's honestly really impressive just how well the lines flow together. It's still a little janky and weird, but it honestly sounds more convincing than the assistant on my phone sometimes.
Simple but effective plot twist...Man i still remember the first time i encountered these soldiers. I was relieved that help had arrived and it was time to take out the aliens. Then they killed a scientist and it was instantly clear...All out war.
It must have been absolutely *terrifying* to hear the staticky robotic voices of the soldiers through the crappy PC speakers everyone had in the late ‘90s and early 2000s.
It's really interesting to compare this to the very similar system used in hl2, you can tell how it evolved from this more primitive one into hl2's system where the soldiers call out grid locations and bearings of the player, have names and will refer to each other by name when they're killed or injured etc. It's cool how the tech has evolved.
HL2 uses a very similar system. Not only is there a sentence for every other occasion, but you can actually find elements of cut story content in some of the sentences.
Holy crap, I had literally no idea they had anything like this in the game. I was sure it was just a few prerecorded phrases. And if I understand correctly they modified the pitch per word to make the different combinations of the same samples sound remotely coherent. That's utterly amazing.
I loved these speech sequences so much. They were so engaging and terrifying. Black Mesa is amazing but the grunt speech in that game was too vanilla. I really wish they would have kept this version of it or something very similar. (maybe someone could make a mod for it).
YEY Grunts! EDIT: There are also some quotes activated by scripts, also, after the player is killed the Hgrunt Commander (If there was any or if survived) Will come up to your body and dance... (Yes that spastic move is called victorydance) If there was no commander in the squad, a random grunt will do the same thing. Commanders also have an unique animation used only by the leader, it looks like hand signals. EDIT 2: After quite a while of wondering, I've just now realized that the "victorydance" is also used to shoot anything on upper levels which explains why they always play the shooting animation while celebrating.
Also other monsters like Alien Grunts have "victory dance" too, they go to enemy corpse and eat it, anims also called victory dance and have "fail" animation, when they can't reach body, also I agree what soldiers anim of victory dance looks like he shooting the body, probably valve planned do like they check body and finish off the wounded but they probably forget add firing effects, also they do that for killed monsters too, for example if grunts fight aliens and didn't see the player. Another interesting thing with Opposing Force allied human grunts, they hostile to the security guards ans scientists, despite they all are allies to the player. And they made as another type of NPC, because game still have grunts from Half-Life which you can spawn with impulse 76 console command or if you launch Half-Life map in OpFor, and they still hostile to the player, some mods what made using OpFor .dll utilize that, they retexture them to make them distinct from ally soldiers and add them into maps as another type of enemy soldiers.
The Allied grunts are a completly new NPC they're enemies to the BM personnel since their orders haven't changed, it's like the sciencetists and security are allies to Freeman but enemies to Hgrunts and Agrunts. in multiple community made maps they both fight even to they're technically from the same unit, the black ops also are hostile with ally grunts but not with the original hgrunts. (You can also change the Agrunt model into the original Hgrunt model, it's somewhere on Gamebanana in skins section if you're intrested.)
By request, here is my MyAnimeList profile: myanimelist.net/profile/Slappy_Cromwell I said I would do this in the comments section of my previous video, but seeing as that was three months ago now, I am making this the pinned comment on a completely unrelated video as penance for procrastinating for so long. I hope this act will atone for those I have wronged.
Just a note - The "charhing at enemy" speech requirement actualy requires the "monster" to move more than 40 meters. Which means that a unit may use it when they have "moving to cover" schedule over the "moving the cover" one.
3 Reasons i don't hear this in my game: 1: Is they're throwing to much nades and they're exploding 2: Is that i keep shooting at them 3: Is that i Don't have the Game
I recently played Half-Life: Source for the first time. Buzzed through it in about 6 hours. I think I know this game pretty well. And yet you keep finding new, bizarre stuff in there. Nice video, by the way.
I used to agree with people that the HECU felt stronger than the Combine Soldiers, but I recently did a HL2 playthrough and that was definitely not the case. The coast levels are pretty easy, sure, but that's just the tutorial for fighting Combine soldiers - open spaces with lots of places to maneuver. The coast immediately transitions into Nova Prospekt, which is just hell for fighting Combine Soldiers. Corridors, catwalks, linear ways to approach positions - a ton of good places for Combine soldiers to attack. The biggest thing is the shotgunners. You will shit your pants when you see these guys, they eat your health for breakfast. Not even just close-range, I've had these dicks kill me at medium range because they had some supporting fire which easily took a dump on my HP. The main reason the HECU were difficult was because they were bullet sponges. They eat up your bullets like candy, then gun you down without mercy. Sure, there are definitely other reasons, but I think that's the biggest. Overall, Combine soldiers benefit a lot from their positioning, while the HECU's difficulty mostly stems from their ability to take a fat dump on your arsenal. Obviously, HECU soldiers in good positioning will still benefit greatly, but they don't need to rely on it. Now, I still do think that the Combine soldiers could use more health just like the HECU, but there's still a lot of difficulty in facing them. To be honest, I don't even wanna imagine what a Combine Elite would be like if the regular soldiers got a health buff similar to the HECU, considering the Elites have 20 more health than the regs.
HL2's human goons suffer from three things: they lack speed, they lack damage output, and they lack the sponginess of the HECU. It's been proven that the Combine AI in HL2 is quite complicated and rather good, but they lack the bite of the HECU.
@@g--stef4756 I agree with you. Combine soldiers are pretty slow compared to the HECU and they do little damage to the player, they literally do 3 damage damage to the player on normal. If the soldier speed was increased to closely match the HECU and the base damage for npc weapons was increased to 4-5 damage on normal, I believe they’d be more of a threat.
So that's how the black hgrunts get their voices heavy, interesting! I still love the "That is... Uhh... Affirmative.", Sven Co-op continued this sentence by adding "sir, over" in the end, and the "Squad, neutralize Freeman!" (Bogies, in Sven Co-op's case.), can't forget "We've got hostiles!" and "Squad, neutralize hostiles!". Additional edit: Wow, I didn't know that they used "bogies" for alien lifeforms, and hostiles for human targets, in SC it seems like they say both, or I'm wrong. And tha ending was quite funny.
"My! Ass! Is! Heavy!" ~ Human Grunt, 2017 I actually modded the sentences.txt file to replace every HG line in the game with that. I hate to be THAT GUY, but if you want to check it out, I uploaded a video of it on my channel.
*Hey Marphy, you could make a video about the Grunts A.I, aswell as the Alien Grunts A.I, the Marines have a rank system, if i remember correctly, The Beret, Balaclava, and Heavy are Squad Leaders, always in groups of 2-4 grunts each, if one of the squad leaders die, grunts sepparate, either panic, or rush you in a "suicide manner" (because you are going to kill them anyway, depending on difficulty) and more!*
Really interesting video! You should try and do the same video for the Civil Protection and Combine Soldiers in HL2 because a lot (if not all) of their lines are also stored as individual words/small sentences. Combine Overwatch and radio codes etc. have always interested me, I'd love to learn more 😊
You know, the second game has the Source engine, making it near impossible to play on low PCs. Now, the first one, has the Goldsource engine, which makes it WAY easier to play on low end PCs. and tbh the shotgun needed a buff in dm :c
Awesome, great job as always Marphi. It's really cool from Valve that they added so many different words to the game. It would be nice if you did the same with combine, I think their communication is really interesting. Many people can't understand what they say including me so it would be nice if we had a good quality video for that, you're the guy to do that tbh.
These are some of the best and most recognizable enemies in gaming. So purposeful and properly fleshed out. They could have just given them the the squad lead, gunner and shotgun types and left them to relentlessly go after the player with no thought or regard for self preservation and it would have worked... but they do so much more then that.

my favourites are: "fire team objective foxtrot niner.", "echo mission is go." and "uhh.. go tango sweep formation."
Foxtrot niner? F-9? Is it somehow related to Freeman?
And "Echo" mission i think means "Eliminate" mission
By request, here is my MyAnimeList profile:
myanimelist.net/profile/Slappy_Cromwell
I said I would do this in the comments section of my previous video, but seeing as that was three months ago now, I am making this the pinned comment on a completely unrelated video as penance for procrastinating for so long. I hope this act will atone for those I have wronged.
Just a note - The "charhing at enemy" speech requirement actualy requires the "monster" to move more than 40 meters.
Which means that a unit may use it when they have "moving to cover" schedule over the "moving the cover" one.
Hold on a second. Slappy Cromwell? As in Slappy Cromwell from Curse of the Monkey Island?
"WE!-WILL!-KICK!-YOUR!-ASS!"
Oh cool, didn't know you were into anime.
from where the hell your profile pic is?
The most manliest voice in the history of games
Kudos to the guy who put captions. The distortion effects make it really hard to understand the voicelines.
3 Reasons i don't hear this in my game:
1: Is they're throwing to much nades and they're exploding
2: Is that i keep shooting at them
3: Is that i Don't have the Game
If you're looking where to find this stuff in the game files, it's "Half-Life > valve > sound > hgrunt"
I have to admit seeing all the speeches made from only one word at time is pretty cool and leads to some pretty nice combo of words
"This makes boot camp look like Disneyland!"
*UHHHHH ROGER THAT*
5:27 W E W I L L T A K E Y O U R A $ $! XD
Amazing how elaborated the AI systems were in this game. The alien behaviour patterns are another example.
loved the way they talked, made the game more creepy
I'm gonna have so much fun sentence mixing them...
Legit fascinating, and it's amazing how well this held up.
I can see why they'd use both for players in Sven Co-Op as you can have alien looking player models in that. :P
Heh kind of
The fuck is a bogie?

This is the perfect video at the most perfect time possible.
5:34
you got nothing
that i need
in my life
so
Give it to me cause you got that
5:32 That Headcrab over there just watching: holy fucking shit 0_0
Honestly given the flat and monotone nature of radio transmissions, the voice synthesis kinda blends in well.
>squad quiet down
>is the only one talking in comms
"Fire in the hole!" That line has given me PTSD.
"My! Ass! Is! Heavy!" ~ Human Grunt, 2017
I actually modded the sentences.txt file to replace every HG line in the game with that. I hate to be THAT GUY, but if you want to check it out, I uploaded a video of it on my channel.
Now that I've seen that video, I now know that making the only human grunt line 'my ass is heavy' is the only way to play Half-Life.
4:35 we got two boogies
I think it's really cool how a whole lot of their lines were reused and re-recorded for Opposing Force.
Overwatch Throring grenades:,

Extractor away! Sharp-zone.
Razor 6, Flush! Sharp-zone.

*Sees Grenade* Oh! Shit!
this seems like an interesting concept on paper, but in action, they honestly sound like they were voiced by a text-to-speech
Nah they were voiced by a dude
check the ****meters.wav files, he says it every time different.
4:02 Squad, we got Freeman!
Really interesting video! You should try and do the same video for the Civil Protection and Combine Soldiers in HL2 because a lot (if not all) of their lines are also stored as individual words/small sentences. Combine Overwatch and radio codes etc. have always interested me, I'd love to learn more 😊
I prefer half-life 1 over HL2
same
I agree.
Says you! I think it was awesome as all hell! 3 is the real dissapointment ;3
Misan tropo WHAT??

Me:
"My as is heavy!"
Pure art.
"They must be listening to the radio. I'm gonna change the channel."
really brings back memories. cool to see how it works.
legit one of the most memorable aspect of half life
Always kinda wondered why their speech was so stiff sounding. Now I get why, since their dialogue is just individual words stapled together.
Ngl I had no Idea that the “My Ass is heavy!” Line was actually a real line in the game until now.
