- I was caught off guard by this one, but Happy 25th Anniversary to the "Roll The Bones" album which came out on this date in 1991.
When I recorded this video a few months ago, this was the closest I ever thought I'd get to a "Wal" tone, which I think this bass does pretty well. Who to knew? I did a few "Wal-era" covers with this bass (which I'll probably re-do) but I think this one will work on such short notice.
This was the first Rush show Lynn and I saw as a married couple (we saw Presto when we were dating). We were married a month after the album was released. It was one of the best sounding Rush shows I've ever heard. When they played this song, they tacked a little extended intro on to it - an instrumental introduction to an instrumental song. I remember, leaning forward in my seat trying to figure out what song it was they were about to play. Lynn saw the gears turning, gave me a tap on the shoulder and said, "It's the 'Thing' song...the instrumental." Mind blown.
Technically, the song is titled, "Where's My Thing (Pt 4 "Gangster of Boats" Trilogy)"
The bass is a Kramer-era, Korean-made Spector NS2A.

Shaun Barry BLAH BLAH BLAH ;)
You nailed it. Perhaps one of your best covers. OUTSTANDING.
Thanks a lot Constantine.
That says a lot coming from Constantine, my 2nd favorite bass cover dude on youtube! Yes you nailed it.
Literally my two favorite bassists on you tube in the same comment section! I wish I could have a collection as big as either of you guys. I have a Spector Euro 4 LX with a Ultra Amber Burst finish, a Black Kramer Era NS2A Spector (ok so this ones my dads not mine but I still play it more than he does these days), and a Fiesta Red Peavey Fury with a gold anodized aluminum pick guard (which is my profile picture)
Thank you both for your hard effort ✌👊😎RUSH ON
4 LIFE..
Yup, what Constantine said
AMAZING ! Love that riff. I called to one of my sons (who is a pretty decent bass player), and asked him if he could play this. As he was coming to the computer (while I switched from headphones to speakers and cranked the volume up), he said " given enough time, I could play any bass line". He almost certainly could too - I've seen and heard him so many times. Anyway, the moment the riff got going (around 00:19), his face lit up, and he said "wow, that's a riff ain't it? Who's it by?" I told him Rush and straight away he told me the bass players name haha. He knows his stuff eh? I can already tell that I'm going to be humming that bass line in my head for at least the next few days now. Regards Mark in the UK
Thanks and thanks for the great story.
Wow, 25 years ago already. This music is so timeless.
What a display of instrument control.
Yup, time flies, doesn't it? Thanks.
Well played, the Spector sound is instantly identifiable
Thanks. I agree.
What a bassist man, even the songs in Rush's repertoire that aren't very well known have great bass lines. And of course your cover is incredible as always :)
Absolutely.
Thanks.
Great Tune.. Awesome job. Spot on!
Cheers.
Thanks.
YEEEEEES!!!Nice one. I love that you do a lot of Rush covers most people don't touch.
Thank you.
Superb song and you just got this superbly done!!!
The Roll The Bones album confused a lot of Rush fans with the "rapping" from the title track. This was the point where many fans took a break from Rush, because of their new musical direction. Many of the songs on RTB can be considered "lost" tracks... Always thought the WMT track was one of the better songs on the album. Thanks for playing this one!
I think many of the fans took a break at grace under pressure actually.
As always, great performer!!!
Thank you.
Loads of fantastic little fills in there and played to perfection as usual 👍
Thanks.
Awesome! One of my favs because my Mom also likes this tune too.
Thanks.
I can’t stop rewinding that one huge bass fill... you know the one. I’ve loved that descending line forever, and it’s cool to see it done. Thanks.
Haha...yeah, you've got to start i just right, or else. Thanks a lot.
I just recently learned this song on guitar & it just so fun to play. Nice cover as always sir!
Very cool. Thanks a lot Richard!
Would love to do a cover project! Even if it was just a one time adventure! Great stuff!
Maybe at some point.
Wonderful bro!......there's that
Troy tone once again.....killer!
Cheers,
Kev
Thanks a lot.
Top notch cover as always.
Thanks!
Roll the bones was my first Rush show in san antonio...paid a scalper 85 bucks for fifth row in front of geddy...and les claypool..primus opened...pretty sure my buddies and i were the only people there who actually were primus fans...so much fun and i still have the tour shirt...though its not really a shirt anymore...oh and Troy im patiently waiting to see more of that hotrod red Wal...you teased us...we want more...as with every cover you do, amazing job...thanks
I was at that show... wow, has it been that long ago?
wow
amazing as usual
25 years since Roll the Bones !1.. Suddenly I feel old
Thanks old man.
Where did the time go !! great stuff.
Thanks.
Beautiful cover!!
Thanks.
Love this song. Going to spin Roll The Bones on vinyl tonight for its anniversary. Hail Rush!
Amazing!
Thanks David!
Very best!
Thanks.
Another awesome cover.. Keep them coming.. I too want to see that Wal make another appearance...Thanks Troy!
Thanks.
Fantastic!!!! Great cover and great lesson for me!!!! Thank you!!!!
Thanks.
You are great! Amazing! Fantastic!... I love Rush... I've been watching your videos and I have to say, this one is awesome!
Nailed it ! Great job. Great album too. It was great to see Rush drop the synths for a more rock oriented record at the time.
Thanks.
Awesome job!
I wonder if they ever wrote lyrics to this. I can almost hear where there could be especially the section starting at 0:37.
Nope. They were asked about it on rockline when the album came out. Before this they had written instrumentals for albums like presto but neil sent lyrics that fit that particular song. On presto it was hand over fist that was supposed to be an instrumental. But wheres my thing was always going go be one. I still have recordings of every rockline interview they did going back to 84. Learned so much about them.
You are soooo lucky to have a wife that's into Rush!
No doubt about that.
epic! great sound and groove fella.
My 5 year old is watching this with me and asked for some Rush to play in the car! keep up the amazing work! Al
Thanks a lot.
Respect
Fantastic pal. It does sound like a Wal!!
Great Job as always! Keep rockin' that Spector! Yes, the tone is close to the Wal
Thanks.
Tnx!
You're welcome.
great tone
Thanks.
10 +. Super!
Thanks.
I just bought this album for the first time a few weeks ago from the local record store (that is having a going out of business sale). Anyway, always love their instrumentals, and Bravado is probably in my top 5 favorite Rush songs (not that it's an instrumental, it's just on the album). This was a great cover - slowed it down to 1/2 speed to watch you hit that monster riff at 1:48. :-) Love your videos! Keep up the great work!
Cool. And thanks a lot.
Awesome playing. Help I cant keep up!
Thanks.
Aaaamigo... que pedazo de cover!!!
Geniales mascaras
You have great taste in basses. Want a Spector now👍
My favorite Rush era. You blew my mind. I really admire your dedication to learning with such accuracy. Do you learn by ear or do you work from charts? (Or both?!)
Cool and thank you. I learn by ear and play by memory. It's how I started and, most likely, how I'll finish.
I hear you on that!
The tone on that bass sounds exactly like the album almost. I had preferred the Fender sound, but that bass has such growl...
I think it's in the ball park.
Awesome. Gosh I’m trying to get that bass run after the second ‘verse’ but it’s so hard to play at speed!
Thanks. You'll get it. Just take it slow, build up your speed, and try not to dig in too hard.
Jesus man. You nailed it yet once again. How long have you playing? And killer background dude.
Thanks.
A very long time.
Most of the background is courtesy of DeathStudios.com
Nice, It shows. Very cool background. Enjoy the weekend dude.
Great Cover! You produce some really fantastic content, but I have a question. What's your favorite Rush song or song to play?
Thanks. To play?....off the top of my head......Prime Mover and Cinderella Man
There's some magic in Prime Mover... One of my favorites too...
Hi Mr. Hughes. Great cover as always. This is a very different question than what you are asked most of the time, but I understand that you have sung a few Rush songs before, and that you do pay a lot of attention to detail. Have you ever figured out what exactly Mr. Lee is doing with his voice when he sings as high as he does on 70s Rush albums? Does he mix with a reinforced falsetto or something? Thank you.
Thanks. I'm not really qualified to offer an opinion on vocals, but my impression is that Geddy just had a uniquely high and powerful voice as can be heard in earlier live bootlegs. Though, even live, on some of the super-high, screaming stuff, the engineer would beef things up with some well timed reverb and heavy delay. Unfortunately, you can only rev an engine for so long like that before parts start to break down.
Great cova.
Any chance of doing Kiss - Sure know something in the future?
Thanks. I've got some Kiss set aside.
R u using using the sansamp BDDI on this? It sounds as if you may be but it's not as pronounced as it is when you're using the Geddy Jazz basses. Thank you! Great playing as usual!
I'm using the SansAmp Para-Driver on this. It seems to work better on my "active" basses for some reason. Thanks.
very nicely done!!!!!!!!!!! great bass tone!!!!! do you own a double neck rickenbaker???
Thank you. No, I do not. If I did, I'd saw off the guitar neck... haha.
hi, how many bass guitars do you own?
Too many.
Was there a Spector/Warwick connection of any sort? They were both popular around the same time and sure did share a lot of design similarities.
There are interviews with Spector on the subject, but, essentially, Warwick outright stole the design of their Streamer bass from Spector. When confronted by Spector, Warwick simply agreed to pay him some sort of royalty. I don't believe they even went to court over it. Not too long after that, Kramer bought Spector and simply failed to collect on those royalties, thus giving Warwick the gift of a lifetime. Very strange story. I wonder if Kramer mis calculated how big both companies would become? In any case, it seems like a really bad business move.
Nice! ;)
Thanks.
To my ears, the Spector has a bit more highs, but also less mids than the Wal. I guess it's similar to Geddy on the Steinberger.
Great job..what series of Spector there?
Thanks... this is a Kramer-Era NS2A.
nice one. bring out some Karn Evil 9 first impression!
What strings you use to Spector?
What kind of strings do you use on your basses?
D'Addario EXL220's on all.
TJH3113 Thanks, I was considering them for my 5-string. You seemed to get the perfect tone, although I know the sound mostly comes from the fingers.
A lot of things factor in when talking about tone. The way you strike the stings (how hard or soft). Where you strike them (a half inch in either direction makes a big difference). A good muting technique can really make notes stand out and punch through. I think a big factor in some player's sounds is the way their instruments are set up. It took me a while to figure that out but, what some of my heroes sounds had in common (Geddy, Squire, Dave Hope...) was, they all had a bit of buzz and rattle in their sounds along with the fundamental note. It doesn't work for every style of music but it's the way I like to hear myself.
Perfect sr¡ tab please 🙏🏻
Thank you but, I'm sorry, I don't have any tabs for this. I play by ear and memory. If I had them, you would be welcome to them.
how many basses do you own?
Too many.
seriously man do you know the exact count?i really envy you, maybe one day i too can live in a first world country and afford my hobbies.need to get out of this shit hole of a country first though
as far as i remember, he has two-three Jazzes (can't recall off the top of my head), a PJ, two Peavey T-40s, three Guilds (B-202, B-301, B-302), the Spector in this video (NS2A), an 80s Ibanez bass of some sort (Roadstar series if I recall correctly), a Gibson Grabber, a Wal, an Ovation Magnum iii, and a 5-string Musicman of some sort. He also had a Hofner for a tiny bit and a Ricky for a while. i think that's the whole stable eh? correct me if i'm wrong, but looking through the thumbnails, those are all the ones I saw
